Checking in with all the february peeps

I am coming up on 4 months Post op and I am so happy. The Scale this morning said 200.5 I am so excited to think I will be under 200 pounds again. It has been 16 years since I was under 200 pounds. I am not there yet but so confident in the sleeve surgery, after a failed lap band. I had a rough day the other day, was picking at food all day long and made a spaghetti bolognese for dinner. My baby 4 ounce stomach had just about enough of my bad behavior and let me know. for all you lap band to sleeve revisions who had no problem vomiting daily like I did. This was so different. It was torture. and I am so Happy it was. With the lap band if something got stuck, just vomit. I feel like I will never do that again after what it was like to puke up spaghetti bolognese. lesson learned. Would love to hear from the February peeps the good bad and ugly. 53.2 pounds down. Not even 4 months out.

    June RNY buddies?

Hey we had surgery same day! I was a sleeve revision to bypass. Hope you are feeling well!
  3. I had an MGB in Tijuana with low BMI and am now below goal weight. Yeah! But I recently developed bile reflux, which is quite serious, so I will be revising to an RNY next month. If I had to do it all over again, I would go to Dr. Esquerra at Mexicali Bariatric Center for an RNY. I encourage you to contact him for a consult to hear what he recommends for you post-ESG. Even if you chose another MX surgeon, it is helpful to talk to 2-3 to ensure you make the right choice of procedure for you and your situation. Please remember that WLS is just a tool. It is a great way to reset your metabolic rate but all of the surgeries can be eaten around, leading to regain. You need to get your head on straight for long term success; you may find therapy a useful tool to help you address your emotional eating tendencies. Good luck.

    Another surgery?

I'm going for a revision @polican. I had my VSG October of 2012. Surgery morning weigh in was 253. I lost 98 lbs. I kept it off for the latter part of 4 years. I had my son July of 2016 and only gained about 20 lbs during the pregnancy. But then I was switched on 3 different medications for anxiety and depression. Effexor ER before pregnancy, Wellbutrin during pregnancy and then Prozac and finally Lexapro after. Sadly, the Prozac made me gain almost 70 lbs. within 10 months time. I decided it was time to get a revision with the consent of my surgeon and my primary care physician. July 25th is my surgery date. I'm currently enrolled in my 3 month program with the weight management center and my hospital. Sometimes life challenges us and we fail but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. If you think having a revision is right for you, do it! Make sure you have the support and reach out to them when you are having a tough time. It's something I didn't do the first time around. Talk to the patients and doctors. I'm the type of person that thinks I can handle my problems on my own but that's exactly what got me to where I am today! Whatever decision you make, know that you are not alone! Good luck!

    Another surgery?

Everyone will about regain about 20% of their weight back after 2 years regardless gastric sleeve or RNY... However RNY has better weight loss results and longer lasting results as the food travels shorter and doesnt stays within your body long enough. RNY is considered the mecca of weight loss procedures. It also says in your link "Most patients report 50 to 60 percent EWL within two years and then subsequent weight regain. These are the patients who seem to benefit most from a revision procedure to eliminate the weight regain" Now for the poster, her potential end result is 189 lb per gastric sleeve calculator and this is with a 20% chance, a 50% chance is 210 after 18 months. If she has another procedure, her starting point will be at her present weight and she will be able to break into the 150's, and hopefully maintain it with some work and dedication. I hands down agree with you that forever dieting is something we will need. Its a must. It's unavoidable for us. I also know from sitting in nutrition class with people over 325 + that weight loss surgery sometimes requires 2 surgeries.

    Another surgery?

RNY is no guarantee. Plenty of people will gain weight back after RNY. 20-35% of people who get RNY fail and regain. This number is much higher for the super obese. No surgery is guaranteed to fix your weight long term. Changing your forever diet and forever eating habits...can. http://bariatrictimes.com/revision-procedures-for-failed-gastric-bypass/

    Dumping is REAL

We gotta make sure to stick to our doctor’s plan so we don’t get ill like that. I accidentally took a bite of my fish tonight and there was sweet potato mash on it (came with meal) & I spat it out cause it was overly sweet tasting. I am afraid of dumping and am trying to limit my sugar as much as I can and am choosing not to consume sugar at all if I can help it. I too am a sleeve to bypass revision & was informed of dumping. I am one of those whom hope I get it as a reminder to not make bad choices. i took off only 3 weeks after my rny

    Dumping is REAL

Sorry you’ve experienced dumping, especially right after surgery. Were you educated (pre-op) on dumping, which impacts 30% of RNY patients? You may need to stay away from sugar for a longtime, more than 1-2 years, if not forever. Does your surgeon’s post-op plan allow milkshakes 2 weeks after gastric bypass or did you just give into temptation? If the latter, you need to set yourself up for success by staying away from fast food places and removing trigger foods from your pantry and fridge. And if you didn’t receive clear nutritional guidance then you should contact your bariatric center for specifics on what you can eat when, post-RNY. Good luck! I was off work (desk job) for 2 weeks after Mini Gastric Bypass. I will be having revision surgery soon (RNY) and my surgeon said I should expect to be off work for 2-3 weeks. How long were you told?
  9. Oh my word!! I had the revision from sleeve to RNY on 6/6. I had some peanut butter chocolate milkshake today. Just a 1/4 of a small sonic cup. I have been so ill!! Do not eat sugar! I don’t know if I ever will again after today. Headache and nausea is horrible. Also, how long were you off work after RNY. My revision was because of a bad stricture/stenosis. I lost 90lbs with the sleeve. I am 180 now but my doctor said I did not have a choice but to get a revision because my stomach was so bad. RNY is not what I wanted but the GERD and nausea were awful. Will I lose much more? Sitting here feeling like I’m going to barf.

    July Sleeve

Sleeve revision for July 25th in Pennsylvania
  11. I had a revision from lap-band to ds in 2014. Prior to the ds I loved dairy...now I can't tolerate dairy all. However I have gone from 420 pounds to196 pounds so for me it was worth giving up dairy. I struggle with anemia and vitamin deficiency though.

    July surgery

53??? I'm 68 and for some reason not worried about age. Having a band revision but this time doing surgery for health and not vanity. We older peeps will do fine👍

    July Sleeve

I'm a band revision to bypass on August 6th. I too am scared I will fail at this too BUT am determined to make a life change!!!
  14. Recovery time should be pretty much the same as it was when you had the band installed. You are going in for a full laparoscopic surgery, so you'll have all the ports/incisions that come with it. You'll be unfilled, have your band adjusted and more than likely some more sutures put in to hold it in place, and this is all barring any complications. I had my band installed in 2011 and I had ZERO physical issues, no slippage, no erosion, nothing. But when I had my revision from Band to Bypass, it took my surgeon over 3 times longer to get the band out, because it has been 100% encapsulated in scar tissue. So, you *might* not have any issues once they get inside you again... but you could have some major complications ahead like I did, even though nothing pointed to there being any real problem. To be honest, my "suggestion" would be to talk to your surgeon about revision to another WLS. The Band has just so much working against it at this point, 2 major manufactures have stopped making them, most surgeons won't even do them any longer.

    Sleeve revision

Thanks Rick! My surgeon has been doing this for 13 years and has a great track record. About 3 mos after my VSG surgery he attempted to “burn” the Barrett’s but couldn’t because of the amount of bile reflux I have. He says the only was to correct the GERD is by doing a revision and then can take care of the Barrett’s. I’m trying to talk myself into it but am unsuccessful at this point.

    Sleeve revision

On the pre-op diet front, that depends upon the surgeon - many of us do no diet at all other than the day before to empty the GI tract. If you are talking to the same surgeon who did your original surgery, and he normally imposes such diets then you will likely be told to do it again, though one can make a good case that since you are at a reasonable goal weight you don't need to "shrink the liver", assuming that is the rationale that they use for the diet. All you can do is ask. When contemplating a revision, it is always a good idea to get a second (or even third) opinion, as these surgeries are often more complex and their causes more variable. If the cause is a shaping or other structural issue with your sleeve (which can have a big influence on GERD problems) then it may be better to correct the problem with the sleeve rather than replace it. As the sleeve is still relatively new to most bariatric surgeons, they may not really know how to correct a problem with a sleeve and prefer to stick within their comfort zone by converting it to a bypass, which they tend to know very well. A good starting place to look for second opinions on something like this is in the DS community - look for a surgeon who is experienced with the DS, since as that uses the sleeve as its basis, they tend to be more experienced with them than most, and tend to be more comfortable in correcting them when needed. The practice that did my sleeve had been doing them for around twenty years, and that was seven years ago - most bariatric practices at that time had only been doing them for a year or two at best.

    Sleeve revision

Thanks, Matt. My surgeon has already broached the subject of a revision due to reflux. He'll decide in a couple months, after I hit the 6 month mark on my sleeve. I had been wondering about all the pre-op stuff.

    June RNY buddies?

Hi I’m new to this thread. I had a sleeve revision to bypass on 6/18 and hate clears. I feel I want substance like stage 2. I’m hungry perhaps because I haven’t been cleared to start protein shakes yet. Anyone else feeling hungry ?

    Sleeve revision

This is going to depend on your surgeon (and maybe insurance) but, my revision from Band to Bypass required a minimum 2 week pre-op diet.
  20. Matt Z

    Question.

EKG/ECG is a standard test pre-op. Had to have one back in 2011 for my band and had to have another one for my revision this past March.
  21. I had VSG in Aug 2017. Dr says I’ll need to have revision due to acid reflux/Barrett’s, etc......Does anyone know what the preop for revision surgery is? Do you still have to do 2 week liquid, etc.....? Just gathering info to make an informed decision. Thx!
  22. Hi July people! Are you ready for this? Happy, excited, nervous? Any revision patents out there? Have you tried out your protein shakes yet? My hospital and surgeon is requiring me to have a 2 week pre-op diet to shrink my liver prior to VSG surgery. I purchased the Syntrax Nectar sample packets. With 17 flavors, I can weed out the ones I like and don't like. Otherwise, I'm ready to do this! What about you guys?! Are you ready?

    rny vs mini

Hopefully in July. The final hurdle is getting approval on the hospital stay from my insurance as this will be done out-of-state (by a revision WLS expert).
  24. I have had a RNY as an original not a revision. Not all patients having RNY have the same outcomes. I can tolerate some sugars without having the immediate dumping, but another issue that can frequently become a problem for some is the post gastric bypass hypoglycemia effect. This is when for instance you have had a small amount of food and in the next 1 1/2 - 2 hours your blood sugar drops. I have this problem and it is not fun at all. It is very frustrating because many times you loose complete functioning ability until you can stabilize your sugars. I have found that in learning to manage this that when this happens it is more often after ingesting a food with some sugar or carbohydrate content. For instance even sugarfree jelly on a slice of low carb bread with peanut butter will cause the sugar to drop, because there is still a small amount of sugar in the sugarfree substitute. Anyways, you may want to consider this as a challenge should you get the RNY revision. If you are one of the lucky candidates to get this problem it is a life long problem that is hard to deal with but can be managed.
