    Need more protein!! Please help

Are you able to eat purees yet? Oikos Pro yogurt is 25g protein per cup...however I would be surprised if you were able to eat much more than 1/4 of the container in one sitting at 2 weeks out. (For some added punch, I like adding PB2 peanut butter powder to the banana flavor!, 6 more grams of fiber in 2 TBSP for 60 calories)

    Need more protein!! Please help

I’ve been trying to layer things to make protein packed foods. Like: Chicken, eggs, nonfat yogurt & Mayo Refried beans, cheese, sour cream & non fat yogurt. I mix it up about a cup at a time and nibble it for a protein boost. I also found things like RealGood brand frozen food (grain free / gluten free) that taste great and have 25-32 of protein in them. I also split my shakes in half (not drinking them all at once. And space them through the day.
  3. Hello everyone :S I am a little more than 2 weeks post op and thankfully as far as healing I have been doing good. My first week was awful as I was barely getting any protein or water intake because it all felt super heavy on my stomach and I began to panic but even being two weeks out I’ve learned more about my body but it’s a working progress. This being said, even though I am getting more protein I am still lacking! Does anyone have any tips on how to get good amount of protein in? I push myself to do 30 gram shake and thankfully my stomach can take tuna but I don’t think I can do 2 shakes at this time and I don’t eat enough meals to get the rest of the protein in. I tired liquacel and it was horrendous! The taste just lingering of fish oil in my mouth has me throwing the bottle out and it was so pricey ugh I really need help

    Stalls and weight gain

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..

    Stalls??

I was in my second week (today is day 1 of week 3) and I’m seemingly in a stall. I had been loosing up to my liquid diet (small amounts). Lost about 10 (despite starting my period the night before surgery) in the pre-op liquid diet. Then I lost 23 pounds my first week. Once I started purées I found it harder to make protein/calorie/water goals and I hit a stall. So I’m hoping that I can get out of that stall soon. I hear the first month is the biggest loss and the first 3 months are when you see your most progress so hopefully I will get back on track soon.

    Jack link's meat sticks

Obviously not until you are approved for solid food but yes. Low calorie, high protein and very portable foods make some of the best choices for snacks and that certainly fits the bill. Just watch the sodium if that’s a concern for you.

Will I ever be hungry again???

As arabesque suggested, the nausea meds your doctor will likely prescribe should help considerably in making eating feel less like torture. It is a bit of a chore for some early out because eating when you don’t feel hungry seems like a waste of time but just try to remind yourself you are eating to fuel and nourish your body. As others have suggested you may miss this period once it’s gone because it will never be this easy to choose the healthier option as it is when your body isn’t screaming out for food.

I have the small packets of his Beef Jerky all the time. Really high protein, low in calories and portable.

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm 5 days through week 1 of pre-op...it was a little rocky day 1 & 2 but not unbearable. I drank a ton of iced tea (I’ve always enjoyed unsweet so that was no big deal) to stave off any nasty caffeine headaches...however, the sugar/carb withdrawal headache blows pretty badly anyway! I even managed to eat out a couple of times with my family...sticking very closely to the amounts/ingredients suggested on my diet plan. As many have suggested for real life after WLS, having a protein bar and tea/water on me at all times was a lifesaver and helped keep me from making bad choices. I worked on not letting myself get hungry and I find that 5 days later, I’m actually hungry less...if that makes any sense?! Good luck all and especially those about to go to liquid pre-op!!

    My potential ulcer

Years ago they thought I had an ulcer. Sharp cutting pains that used to run across my lower abdomen. I did the breath test for the helicopter pylori which is the bacteria behind most ulcers & an endoscopy. What they discovered was I over produced acid which also caused a lot of my reflux symptoms. PPIs do reduce acid production & while pre surgery I took one as necessary (about 5 or so times a year) I now take one every day. As the PPI is helping you I’d think it’s more likely to be excess acid too. It’s not uncommon for our acid production to increase after surgery but also because we’re still producing the same amount into a much smaller tummy. Hence why we’re usually prescribed PPIs for a while after surgery until it settles. Yes, the pain is worse when your tummy is empty because there is no food to absorb the acid. Pre surgery, the quickest & easiest way to stop the pain was to eat some carbs. Of course that’s not an option any more but it’s usually pretty much under control now because I eat quite often through out the day. I had a bad experience a couple of weeks ago though. Due to a number of events out of my control which ended in sitting in Emergency with my mother, I had only eaten breakfast & a mid morning snack. By 7pm I was in quite a bit of pain which wasn’t alleviated until almost 10pm when I got home & could eat. The next day my poop was very loose & acidic (burning & smell). Also I don’t have a gall bladder now which used to regulate the acid entering the digestive system so now it just drips in all day long. When your surgeon finally rings you back, ask for a breath test & an endoscopy (or may be your GP can arrange a breath test in the US 🤷🏻‍♀️) just to be sure you haven’t an ulcer nor any pockets of inflammation from the excess acid. All the best.

    August surgery buddies!

I had my post op visit today to have my staples removed (really glad to see them go!). I’m down 20 pounds since my pre op visit two weeks ago, and 63 pounds overall. No real problems except a persistent pain in my back because I haven’t been able to sleep on my side yet. Getting my water and protein in and feeling great!

Those of you 1+ year post op….

The most interesting revelation in considering these questions is that WLS has not been the overwhelming consideration over the years. what’s been your biggest change? Seating. When travelling, airline seat size is no longer a consideration. When renting a car, seat size is no longer a consideration. Theater seat sizes are no longer a consideration. Restaurant seat or booth sizes are no longer an issue. Folding chairs are no longer fear inducing. what was the biggest surprise? I honestly don't recall any surprises. I had done crazy research before I decided on WLS, so there were no surprises related to surgery, the recovery, the diet, or anything. I wasn't concerned with the post-op diet because proteins were my favorite parts of meals. Can the biggest surprise being that there were no big surprises? biggest challenge? The one challenge I took seriously is that weight and dieting would not be the center of my life once I lost my weight. I was not going to be on a diet for the rest of my life. My surgeon's plan was basically that I started with my lifetime maintenance diet from day one. So, from day one I started building my lifetime habit so that by time I lost my excess weight my lifetime eating habits had been built into me. So my biggest challenge was anti-climatic, it was my new normal. Additionally, a major aspect of this is that I don't weigh at home. I only weigh at my annual physicals biggest personal victory? This is probably the easiest questions of the four. I ran 5 marathons, one of which was the San Francisco marathon where I got to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. I ran two Long Beach Marathons, which started and ended at the Queen Mary. One was the Surf City Marathon. So 4 marathons were on the Pacific Coast. The 5th was the Valley of Fire Marathon which was just outside of Las Vegas.
  13. Hi All, I had surgery 10 months ago and hit my 18 month goal at 6 months. However, since then I fluctuate 2+/- lbs for the last 4 months. I have lost 2 pants sizes, about 6 inches from my waist, and gained about 3 inches on my hips. I can’t get past 140/142 lbs on the scale. I have increased my protein, watched my carb intake, increased my exercise and still haven’t dropped past 140 lbs. has any had this happen? My dietician still hasn’t responded after multiple attempts of outreach.

    September surgery buddies!!

Welcome to all the new people Can't believe its almost sept, yay! How are the people going soon feeling? I still have awhile to go but I see more people for the 19th which is my day too. I don't think I have enough protein shakes so I'm getting some more. Trying to break up my orders so that I can spread out the cost. I'm worried because most people seem to like the premier shakes before surgery but then it seems they are too sweet to people after the surgery. So I don't want to have too many and have it be a waste of money. I've heard fairlife is a good option for after because its less sweet but I haven't tried them yet. Maybe I should get some just in case. I don't like milk, so I'm hoping it isn't too plain. Other than planning, I'm just trying to make time go faster lol.

    August surgery buddies!

Good morning from overcast San Diego. I am officially 1 week post-op today. Things are going well. Tolerating pureed soups, protein shakes well and hitting my water goals. Moving quite a bit, too. Today I'm allowed to drive myself, so I will not wake up my nocturnal almost-18 daughter to drive me to the auto repair shop where I have an early appointment. Speaking of which, I need to get going. No time to enjoy soup, so I'll take a protein shake with me for breakfast, then have soup in a few hours.

    August surgery buddies!

Sounds about right. I've gained and lost 150+ pounds at 3 points in my life, and whenever I dropped like a stone, I'd hit a plateau. I think it especially makes sense in light of not hitting your protein goals... I keep hearing that's hard for people who don't like protein shakes (understandable). I hit my 65 just barely with 2 protein shakes + Greek yogurt, and it feels like I'm setting timers all day to either be eating or hydrating so I don't forget. Anyway, I totally wouldn't stress about the stall. I'm sure it will start coming off again soon.
  17. I read this a couple weeks ago and forgot until now to post about it. It's supposed to mimic gastric bypass without rerouting the digestive tract. I'm not sure how to feel about this minimally invasive implantable device. I previously had a Lap Band and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I guess if it makes it past clinical trials and gets approved, we'll see how patients do and if this is another option to end obesity and diabetes. Just thought I would share this with the community. https://www.jpost.com/business-and-innovation/tech-and-start-ups/article-713944

    August surgery buddies!

On Tuesday I will be 3-weeks Post-Op! I went back to work last week and OMG it was rough. I'm still not eating a lot, so I was EXHAUSTED by mid-day. I've been taking naps when I get home...like "If I don't lay down RIGHT NOW I'd going to fall asleep driving/standing up" kind of naps. Reminds me of the exhaustion during my pregnancy! Something they didn't tell me (but they said they did tell me): about 10-14 days post-op you might feel intense pain on your left side. Like a pulling, twinging, sharp pain that gets worse when you bend over or try to sit or even move the wrong way. Totally different pain that the post-op pain. Apparently this is caused because all the swelling is gone and your stomach/intestines are no longer "cushioned" within that swelling so they move around a bit more and the internal stitches/incisions are moving around. Nothing to be worried about and completely normal (according to my office). But holy cats was it scary!!!! I thought FOR SURE something was wrong. Water goals are FINALLY reached. Protein goals are still not being reached. I can't count protein shakes towards water goals at all, they count as meals. And I cannot drink an entire shake during 1 meal...it's split between 2. Vitamins are going well except the calcium. They have me taking TUMS for the first 3 months and I cannot for the life of me chew them and keep them down. I have to call them tomorrow to see if I can switch to something else because the TUMS make me so ill that I have stopped taking them all together. Had my first little "mini-stall" right on schedule during week 2. Lasted 3 days. I'm moving down again! I'm having a really, really big problem with constipation. I'm taking Miralax in my water every morning & 2 stool softeners daily and I still don't have any poop movement unless I take a mega-dose of additional laxatives. I'll go 3-4 days without pooping, then take the mega-dose of laxatives, have a really bad evening and then start over and do that cycle again. I've talked to my doctor about it and I don't think they are understanding what a big problem this is.

    Atkins Shakes

I’m assuming she means to add protein powder to them.
  20. I second the binder recommendation. Binders help to reduce discomfort when you have to move or walk. Check with your team, oftentimes they put one on in the OR right after surgery. You'll only need it for a couple weeks probably at most, so if they provide one, you won't need to buy one. Also a heating pad is helpful for the surgery gas that is used to insulfflate your abdomen, and when it travels from your abdomen, up to your back and neck. (Walking often helps to move the gas out of your system too.) A tracking app like Baritastic or My Fitness Pal to track your fluids and protein is a big help also. I know some people set alarms on their phones to remind them to drink every 15 minutes. Best wishes!

Stall - revision sleeve to bypass

How much have you lost since your revision? Sometimes during stalls, we don't lose pounds, but we are losing inches. I think it also depends on how much weight you have to lose. The less you have to lose, the slower weight loss can be. And stalls can happen all along the weight loss journey. I think they're a normal part of the process. It's our bodies/metabolisms adapting to the changes our bodies are going through. I'm only 6 weeks post op Band to Bypass revision. But I seem to be a slower loser than those with virgin bypasses. My restriction is there, depending on what I eat. Of course I feel it more with denser proteins. Compared to my Band, the Bypass seems to feel completely natural, unlike my Band. When I was able to start exercising, and increased my calories a bit, I noticed the scale started moving better. I hope to be released tomorrow to be able to lift weights again, I know that will also help me more. Best Wishes!
  22. I hated the taste of the shakes as they tasted too sweet so I did the clear protein drinks. Whatever you buy though don’t buy too much cause you may not like them post surgery. Maybe try convenience stores to buy singles of shakes and drinks to have a variety to try.

    August surgery buddies!

I think I know what’s going on and I just wanted to check in to see if this sounds like others experience. I lost about 10 pounds pre-op liquid (despite getting my period the day before surgery). I had also been loosing weight prior to starting the liquid diet. The first week after surgery I dropped 23 pounds! I started purées This past Wednesday and I’ve been struggling with my protein goals and my calories are a little low - trying to make sure I stay hydrated has been my priority and I’m having trouble getting it all I haven’t really lost any weight since starting purées, but I’m assuming the big drop initially and not hitting protein and calorie goals - my body is in a stall until I can work that out. Does that sound right? I’m hoping as I go through the next week - I can adjust and see some movement. I’m trying not to stress about it because I know this can happen - I just wasn’t expecting it quite yet. Any advice?

    August surgery buddies!

Anyone who has had the surgery gotten a strange stitch in their side? Its not the incision its deeper inside. Painful to yawn or breathe really deeply. Also, anyone else get random hiccups. Like just one when nothing has happened to cause it. Like this morning I woke up, had 1 hiccup and then winced because it hurt my side. I don’t really have gas pain anymore and I’m doing my walking, staying hydrated and taking in my protein regular. Not many issues there. btw its my left side.
  25. Sugar free Popsicles were my go to. Also.gwr some Chicken/ Beef Broth. Once you can do full liquids Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt tastes amazing and is 15g of protein. Best of luck!
