    May 2023 surgeries

I’m in the same boat with eating, had one day where I ate too much too fast, but eggs, and everything else I have no issues with as long as I eat it somewhat slow. My doc said to stay away from oatmeal for the first 3-4 months, her words were “oatmeal is the biggest thorn in my side with blockages” although I see all over it is ok, I guess it makes sense it could be an issue with how sticky it can become

    Bariatric Myths??

i opted for sleeve cuz: (1) i wanted to continue taking a prescribed NSAIDs with no interruption (2) i was wary of dumping syndrome and (3) the thought of "re-routing my plumbing" gave me pause well. 1- Turns out i no longer needed my NDAIDs soon after surgery, so that was moot. 2 - I got dumping syndrome anyway, yay. 3 - the fear of re-routing my plumbing was probably just silly cuz i couldn't feel anything anyway. Further i developed an issue with reflux (nothing unmanageable, but still). But in the end, im still ridiculously pleased with my decision, and i lost 120 lbs in 7.5 months (i know/read lots of accounts with the same-ish loss numbers, and am actually surprised that a 30-40 lbs loss on sleeve is common!) would i make a different choice knowing what i know now? who knows. i have no idea what it would have been like if i had by-pass since i didn't do it. and the results of my sleeve went a-ok for me, so i figure i won't sweat it.
  3. BP medicine down from 10mg preop to 2.5mg, PCP admitted she will keep me on it because when I'm at the office it spikes but my records are all below 110/70, hoping to have it removed at my 3 month follow up.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi everyone. Happy to hear that those of you who have had their surgeries so far are doing well. I had my RNY on Friday (June 2). Overall, I guess I am doing well. However I am having a very bad allergic reaction to what I assume is the mastisol they used to adhere the steri-strips over the incisions. I am feeling so angry about this because I had this same reaction in April when I had my LapBand removed. In April, however, the rashes (red, raised, scaly, with tiny pustules) were contained to little ovals around the 4 incisions. At that follow up appointment - which was also the pre-op appointment for this RNY surgery - the surgeon said “it’s a mastisol allergy, we won’t use it for the RNY.” I was satisfied with this and was looking forward to surgery. When surgery day came, I told every nurse that worked with me about the mastisol allergy. Several nurses worked together to try to figure out how to document the allergy in my medical record. When I met with the surgeon just prior to surgery, I again brought up the mastisol allergy. He said he would use a different surgical adhesive. I felt confident that this was handled. The day after surgery, I began feeling an itchiness across my belly where most of the incisions are. They had the abdominal binder on me most of the time so I really couldn’t see my belly until I came home. But by that evening (Saturday) I noticed the same red, raised rash around all of the incisions. On Monday, the rash was now widespread over my belly, extending several inches beyond the incisions. It is extremely itchy and has progressed with some tiny pustules already (back in April, the tiny pustules didn’t happen until over a week after surgery). I read the operative report in my online patient portal and sure enough, the last line states “mastisol and steri-strips applied.” I can not believe this. I called the clinic yesterday and the nurse said “it’s going to get worse.” She said to take Benadryl and use anti-itch cream but to avoid the incisions. This has been taking the edge off a bit but not nearly enough for me to be comfortable. I think reactions like this are pretty rare, so I’m not trying to scare anyone. I’m just feeling so very, very frustrated right now to have to deal with this on top of the usual post-op stuff of trying to stay hydrated, etc.

I would say if it's soft, easy to chew, and moist the turkey sausage is totally fine. However, each program may have different criteria of what is considered "soft food". Congrats on your loss so far, that's great! I'm by no means an expert on stalls. I just keep reading, stick to the program. It'll break soon enough.

Turkey sausage is a great idea I just wasn’t sure that would be consider soft foods and nowhere on my list of foods say oatmeal but I would love some oatmeal. I’ve finally reach a weight loss stall I’ve been between 168 and 170 for the pass week and a half so I thought it was because I was able to eat more
  7. Hello everyone! I'm just over 3 months out of my gastric bypass surgery and I'm struggling A LOT with belching and it's constant all day every day, if its an especially bad day it makes me end up heaving and trying to be sick (cant vomit since surgery, just plenty of dry heaving) I'm also still having bad diarrhea every day and have basically every day since the surgery, dieticians say dumping but even when I was just on liquids or hardly eating its the same result! I've done a stool sample and no bugs to be found. I have been meaning to increase my fibre but I haven't actually done it yet because I've been fairly poorly either liver problems at the same time and I'm trying to get back on track Any advice would be really appreciated Sam

    Multivitamin

    @arabeseque I am completing my 3rd week.

I can put away a whole egg too. Depending on what it is I can eat about 2-4oz. I'm about 5 weeks as well.. As far as breakfast. What about turkey sausage, oatmeal with protein powder, or yogurt. I'm still mostly drinking my breakfast.
  10. I was able to sleep on my side the second night (didn't start that way but woke up in that position with no discomfort). Then a couple of days later, I woke up on my belly, again with no discomfort. So, I was able to sleep pretty much normally after the first week. 🤷‍♀️

Agree... I will be getting tested at my 3-month follow-up for vitamin levels. Fingers crossed.

I feel like a pig because I have no trouble getting down an entire boiled egg heck most foods I eat I’m eating the whole 2 to 2.5oz of it with no problem. I’m never hungry but I do have my watch set to alert me at 8am, 12noon and 5pm to eat. Yesterday was the first time I actually felt full but I’m never hungry. I’m 5 weeks post op from RXNY. Only eating soft foods only protein no veggies until week 6 post op. If you know of anything other than eggs I can eat for breakfast please post I’m so sick of eggs

I tried to make a hard boiled egg yesterday. I ate 1/4 of it. I couldn’t eat all of that in one day. The struggle is real. I’m almost 4weeks post op. It’s like my appetite left me after 3 weeks.

La.nena, I just started soft foods today and don't think I could do it with just 1 protein drink either. Saw my doctor today and he said to try and replace the drinks, but make sure to keep supplementing with them to hit my goals. For reference, today I had 1/2 egg 1/3 of a greek yogurt mixed with vanilla protein powder 1 cheese stick 75% of a turkey stick 25% of a ricotta bake (which was yummy) I honestly could have done without the cheese stick as I am not sure that I was really that hungry, and it was decently close to dinner time (like 90m before). I ended up hitting the same protein level I had yesterday, but got 10g more of fat and 2g more of carbs. Overall, very happy with the day.

So the last 3 days I can’t meet my protein goal. I’m on soft foods. Only 1 protein drink a day. I’m never really hungry. I try and eat and take 3 bites and I’m done. I meet my liquid goal but that’s it. My dr wants me to eat 3 to 4 small meals a day and try not to do more then 1 protein drink. I’m never hungry 😑

    Advice!!

sounds like acid reflux to me, too. Did they put you on a PPI, like omeprazole or pantoprazale? Some surgeons do that automatically for the first 3-6 months to control acid (since it's not good for healing). If yours didn't, and the burning continues, you might want to ask your clinic about it, or at minimum, let them know what's going on.

    Lost all motivation

I'm so sorry that happened. And I know how much hurtful words from your spouse can really shake one at their core. Could you find a marriage counselor who does online video calls? I think therapy is the only viable option to get to the root of what's going on. Or maybe a bariatric surgery support group for partners. Someone had mentioned that he may feel threatened by your weight loss. That is not an uncommon problem; especially if the partner is insecure. Maybe try to build up his security. Men normally respond to verbal praise. For example, in the first few weeks after my surgery, my husband was a very grumpy person to be around. When I commented on it, he blew up and said how overwhelmed he felt with work, taking care of a large portion of the home responsibilities, that it's been all about me and my recovery, and a few other things. I took some time to process, and in the right timing, I thanked him for all he's doing and told him that it did not go unnoticed. I reassured him and built him back up. Since then, things have been going really well. Your therapist may have some other ideas.
  18. I was able to sleep on my side. Doc said do what feels right for me. I had a pillow under my side belly but it was so nice to just lay vs sit. Other tidbits: 1) your digestion is gonna change. Constipation or diarrhea, bad smelling gas, etc. be prepared and ready to address the biome that is your gut, 2) “hunger” feelings might actually be gas. You just have to feel it out. 3) some people know when they’ve eaten enough, others find out the hard way (vomiting, foamies). I get the hiccups. It’s so strange, 4) you may be SO wiped out with such a low calorie diet. I felt drained for the first 8 weeks, which is not unusual, and 5) the mental/emotional struggle is REAL. Get a therapist if you don’t have one! 😂
  19. I got the gastric sleeve on May 10th and just recently about 3 or 4 days ago I have started feeling a burning feeling on my throat after I eat anything. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know why I am getting this?& is there anything to relieve this pain? Ty
  20. Prepped a batch of Bulgogi (korean marinated beef strips) and froze batches of it a month ago...finally got around to defrosting one of the ziplocks and cooking it. OMG so yum, if i say so myself! Portioned our about a cup of the cooked bulgogi and a 1/4 cup of cooked white rice (cuz u can't have bulgogi without rice!). 378 calories for the bowl, ate about 2/3 (maybe 3/4?) of it all. not sharing my leftovers with mr. as im keeping it for later cuz its so yum. p.s. the onions were not part of the frozen ziplock contents...i sliced and sautéed them separately 😉
  21. I was worried I would have to sip liquids the rest of my life but finding out at 8 weeks I can guzzle water with the best of them . xD

    Best broth?

I know this thread is a couple of years old, but I wanted to offer some suggestions for your pre-op diet. When it comes to tasty broths, Healo Broth is a solid choice. They offer a range of flavors that can make those liquid days more enjoyable. Check out their website for more info. This Broth is packed with goodness, perfect for your full liquid diet. Whether you're craving savory chicken or flavorful beef, they've got options to satisfy your taste buds during this phase. Staying hydrated and getting that protein kick from their broths will help you sail through those two weeks before your surgery. Hang in there, and I hope your surgery went well and you had a smooth recovery.

    Lost all motivation

I see a bairatric psychologist. I see her again in a few weeks but have missed my last few appointments because of my new job. She has already recommended marriage counseling but that's easier said than done. Cost and finding one close to my small town that accepts my insurance is very difficult. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of my marriage. We have 4 kids so that makes things tougher. Sent from my SM-S115DL using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Mine's been about 6 months from initial appt in Dec 2022 to surgery (this Wed) but other factors happened, such as emergency gallbladder surgery 2 days after my first appt, grad school started in Jan, my mom passed in Jan. as well, so I was not in any mindset until late March or so. I had to have 2 nutrition classes, psych eval, PCP clearance, labs, and my diet is 1 week liquid before sugery and all clear the day before.
  25. 2 weeks & 5 days post op and I'm doing great

Gatorade w/protein makes me gag now. I think from having so much of it.

I had the ricotta bake for a few days. I'm in the puree stage but rotisserie chicken, chicken meatballs, cold cuts, & plain tuna don't bother me.

I had a plain old fashioned peppermint and it made me nauseous...
