mine lasted 3-4 months (started in month 5 - stopped around month 8 or 9). Although I really didn't lose that much - it wasn't noticeable to anyone but me.

What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???
BabySpoons replied to Jjohnson1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've heard amazing things of people reversing diabetes, sometimes days after surgery. Even before losing the weight. I am prediabetic and hoping for similar results. Doc said he'll run some lab work at my 3 month visit. It's my goal too, to eventually be off all my meds. People can't seem to see past the weight loss aspect of the surgery and how much more it helps in resolving the comorbidities that are slowly killing us. I wish you the best and keep us posted on your progress. Oh and fun thread. Smoked brisket sounds amazing!!!! -
I had diarrhea my first week also, by week two it had calmed down. Now I'm just constipated unless I take miralax everyday. This surgery really does a number on your gut.

I am one week post op. I am totally struggling. I have diarrhea every time I eat. I talked to my dr. They called in a prescription that cost 7,000, called dificid. I have no energy at all. My regular dr won’t do anything be because he doesn’t want to go against the surgeon. Waiting to hear from my surgeon… -
What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???
BabySpoons replied to Jjohnson1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Spaghetti with tomato-based meat sauce topped with grated parmesan cheese. No bread. I pretty much stuck to my dietician's recommendations for the 3 months before surgery. Even skipping a family Easter dinner. I kept remembering, reading the warning that if I regained weight my surgery would be cancelled. That pretty much kept me on the straight and narrow. -
Okay so weird I walk every single day and I just feel like I'm not even losing one little pound but I just I just started my liquid diet just been two days but I still have this week and next week but it's not all liquids I'm still able to include a protein as well
-
For example, I'm the morning I'll take the omeprazole (acid reducer), Multivitamin, B12, D3, and a stool softener. That seems like a lot on my stomach in one go. Should I wait 30 minutes to eat or can I just eat right away. I am 4 weeks out tomorrow.

A week or so before I went to Fuddruckers. I love their ribeye steak sandwich. I would still love to eat one now once and awhile but they have closed down in our area [emoji24]. -

I did the rounds of my favourite restaurants that week. Thai, Indian etc. On my last day I did my favourite Chinese take away, Ribs, a spring roll and beef steak in a black bean and chilli sauce with rice. Ate the entire thing and rolled away from the table. -
It took me all day to take my tablets in the beginning because I could feel them as I swallowed. I had a massive restriction. Some people on here had zero problems. Just do your best. Some go down best with a drink others are best with a small spoon of yogurt. I still take gummy vitamins because I like them. I still have suckable calcium but it takes some getting used to. Out of habit I still break my pain medication in half. I get B12 by 3 monthly injections

I'm allowed to start incorporating soft foods now, a week early, yay! I've gotten the bit too full feeling twice now, it's uncomfortable until it moves down. I seem to hiccup when full sometimes so use that as a stop signal. @Synlee how are you? -
Post Surgery - Ability to Exercise for long periods ?
catwoman7 replied to LandofHopeandDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm eight years out and do 2-3 hour bike rides a few times a week when the weather cooperates. However, I started out really heavy so no way I could have ridden a bike....or exercised that long. The longest I probably exercised for the first year or so was in hour-long water fitness classes. the hydration thing isn't an issue. Water goes right through you surgery or not, so I don't think it makes any difference. I just take a water bottle with me when I'm going biking (or taking some cardio class). -
Hunger also came back gradually for me, along with my sweet-tooth - so gradually that I can't even pinpoint the time when I really noticed. I was just very slowly and steadily able to eat a little more. My weightloss was also a steady, slow thing, so I didn't have the big-loss numbers in the first five months others can have, I had constant stalls and a rate of loss no different to pre-surgery diet efforts. My loss did slow down closer I got to goal, but reaching goal also snuck up on me because the slow weightloss had me take my focus off the scale for a month or so because I just assumed it was going to take ages. That whole a-watched-pot-doesn't-boil thing. These days I try to keep my calories around 1500, which I'll always have to be super mindful of because it takes so little to go over. Grazing is the enemy. Protein keeps me satisfied the longest, so that's always got to be the priority. The plan is for life.

Gastric Sleeve Patients in Their 20s
vsg2410 replied to hannah grace's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery 6 months ago at 25 years old! I think this thread could be very helpful as every age range has different struggles! I thought because I was young and active I’d be up and exercising within days after surgery. Unfortunately, I was wrong and the anesthesia hit me hard!! I was nauseous and exhausted for 2-3 days post op and only tolerating 2 20 minute walks by one week. I used my nausea and pain meds around the clock for at least the first week and as needed there after. It was definitely a bigger adjustment than I had thought, so I was happy to have my family to support me through it. I also connected with a therapist pre op to have them as a support throughout the process. It’s hard to find people to relate to in their 20s who’ve had the surgery so therapy has definitely been helpful for me. I’m happy to elaborate on anything or answer any questions! -
COLLEGE students - please help!
vsg2410 replied to goatsarecool's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I commend you for making this decision! One of my doctors first brought up surgery when I was in college. At that point, I knew I wasn’t ready to take my health that seriously. I wanted to have a “normal” college experience. I 100% do not regret waiting until after college to have the surgery since I knew I wasn’t ready. I’m still in my early 20s and it’s a tough life adjustment. My social life lessened a lot early on due to not being able to eat out or drink alcohol. I’d say in terms of college life that would be one of the bigger struggles post op. Also, depending on your dining options at school it can be difficult to track and have good options. At the beginning about the first 2 months it may be difficult to hide from your roommate that you’ve had surgery. The food options are pretty limited and the quantity is very small. But, a lot of college aged students have not struggled with weight yet and have no idea about bariatric surgery so they may never catch on! Also something to keep in mind, most people at my surgery center are out of work for 2 weeks. I know a lot of people say they feel fine after surgery, but it hit me hard and I needed the full 2 weeks off of work. I’ve heard that younger patients can have more side effects from anesthesia and that was definitely the case for me. So I’d definitely recommend at least 2 weeks before move in day. In terms of approaching the conversation with my parents, I told my mom that I had something important to talk to her about and I wanted her to support me in my decision. Later after I had gone through the pre surgical processes and had a date, I told my dad I decided to have surgery to improve my health and gave him the opportunity to ask any questions. Best of luck to you! -
I had my band removed in April 2023 and began to gain weight immediately. I was suddenly able to eat breakfast again, so I did! I am having RNY in June (6 weeks after the band removal), and my surgeon was upfront that the vast majority of patients who have their bands removed will unfortunately regain at least some weight since the stomach is almost back to its pre-band state without restriction.

Two-year hiatus from this site
BigSue replied to Born in Missouri's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Welcome back! It seems like most people drift away after a while, once they get used to their "new normal" post-surgery life and no longer want or need everything to revolve around their surgery. I'm almost 3 years post-op and sometimes get tired of seeing the same posts over and over again from the next crop of newbies. There are a few WLS veterans like catwoman7, Arabesque, and The Greater Fool who have stuck around and answer these questions with the patience of saints, but they are few and far between. -
What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???
BigSue replied to Jjohnson1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My last meal was Marco's pepperoni pizza and cheesy bread. That was actually my last two meals -- I got a whole pizza and order of cheesy bread and ate half of each on each of my last two days before surgery. I planned out a whole week of food funerals, but the catch was that I had to stay under 2,000 calories per day (I lost 70 pounds in the 5 months before surgery by limiting calories). The half pizza and half cheesy bread was my entire 2000 calories for each of the last two days. The rest of the week (which I know because I recorded it all in MyFitnessPal) included: Ribs and sidewinder fries from my favorite local restaurant Steak and onion rings (the steak was a ribeye from Walmart and really disappointing -- I wish I had splurged on a better steak) and half a piece of cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory (660 calories for half the slice!) Red Baron pizza and the other half of the slice of cheesecake Bacon cheeseburger that was voted the best burger in the city and a Klondike bar Pizza and wings from Pizza Hut I... really liked pizza. Before surgery, if I so much as saw an extra eating pizza in the background of a TV show, I would get an insatiable craving for pizza. Once a week, I would fast all day so I could have a whole Red Baron pizza as my one meal for the day (their brick oven pizza is underrated in the frozen pizza world). After surgery, I made some attempts at healthy pizza (e.g., chicken crust, low-carb tortilla crust) but eventually came to realize there were much tastier and healthier things that I would rather eat. I haven't had real pizza since my surgery (almost 3 years ago) or anything even resembling pizza in the last couple of years and, oddly enough, I don't miss it. -
I’m on soft foods to and I get full fast. I barely eat an ounce or two each meal. One shake takes me almost an hour to drink. Sometimes I drink half and then drink the other half later. I meet my goals each day but it takes me 3 to 4 tiny meals and a snack through out the day.

Hi there! Just wanted to gain some perspective. Out of anyone here who had the gastric bypass, can you give me info on your journey? How much weight did you lose in the first month, 3 months, 6 months after surgery? I'm working on getting my clearances so that I can have surgery in late summer. My friend, who just had GB, told me "your new life doesn't start the day of your surgery, but right now, so take care of yourself!" So, I'm trying. But hearing what others have experienced will give me some perspective and I'm big on that kind of thing.

I lost 25 pounds in 3 months before surgery and your friend is right. Putting off losing weight till surgery date just reminded me of all the excuses I made before. I'll wait till Monday to start or after the holidays.
I'm 8 weeks out from Gastric Bypass and lost another 25. So I'm averaging about 3 pounds a week post-surgery. That's the most I've ever lost consistently over time without regain so I'm happy. Good luck on your journey!

May 2023 surgeries
Miss Sunshine P replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been saying the same thing to my friends I don’t feel hungry or full. If they hadn’t put me on a time to eat I probably wouldn’t because I don’t know I’m hungry and I stop eating in 30 mins because they told me I don’t feel full. I don’t want to stretch my pouch either but it feels strange not having those feelings. I’m 4 weeks post-op from gastric bypass surgery -
You're absolutely right - it seems to be very different for different people. I had a gradual return of hunger at around 9 or 10 months. Probably over the course of a couple of weeks. If I ate my protein first I still felt full with around the same size of meal, I just wanted to eat again sooner afterwards. Then on top of that as the months progressed I could eat greater volumes - that continued AND I was hungry too. I learned here that head hunger is often craving a specific food or taste or texture, but real hunger can be addressed by eating most anything. So I started to have fruit and veg for snacks and that seems to have worked for me. My 3 main meals are protein first always. I could have just added another meal, but I had been concerned all along that I wasn't getting anything like the recommended fruit and veg intake. My weight loss had slowed when my hunger returned and I stopped losing more or less completely around 15 months post op. I'm 18 months out now and so far maintaining. Everything crossed.

These are great questions, and ones I'd love to know answers to, as well. I'm a week away from being 3 months post-op, and just recently (within the last week or so), I've been having a bare minimum of an appetite. It's kind of nice to not be hungry, but I'm not looking forward to this part of the journey, either. 😅

Post Surgery - Ability to Exercise for long periods ?
Nepenthe44 replied to LandofHopeandDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been going on 3 hour hikes since 10 days post-op. That said, I've had very little trouble with fluid intake. (I can't chug a liter of water in one go like before, but that's more of a weird party trick than a positive lifestyle choice.) I also live in a cold temperate climate and wasn't out in the summer sun. I had thought of using a CamelBak type thing to be constantly drinking fluids, but it turned out not to be necessary. -
I have one week pre-op clear liquid diet. Otherwise they just have me practicing the bariatric plate method and taking my vitamins.
