Any April Surgery Dates?
Shanna NYC replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh I’m off and on struggling with protein and water goals. I am also not hungry but I know I have to get in the protein. I’m on the entry of stage 3 (can add other things in after a full month from surgery). So without actual meat things, it’s a circle of shakes, eggs, cheeses and yogurt and I’m over it. I mixed up the protein shakes because I was also sick of chocolate. I have the Core Power in Vanilla and Strawberry Banana to add variety. Also just got Protein 2 O protein water to break up the creamy stuff. It’s hard getting in 60grams at this point. -
I travel quite a bit, but most of it is alone, so I only have to be in charge of myself and my own schedule which makes it a bit easier...but I do have some suggestions of things that work for me. I would try to seek out lodging that has a refrigerator and possibly a microwave and consider preparing at least one or two of your meals in your room as opposed to eating in a restaurant--you'll have a much easier time being able to control your portions and what is in your meals that way. I usually hit a grocery store before I head to my hotel and pick up things like string cheese, vegetables that are easy to snack on (grape tomatoes, baby carrots, even things like sugar snap peas are really good raw), individual containers of cottage cheese or yogurt, deli turkey, things like that. When you do eat out in restaurants, think outside the box and consider pairing several sides into a meal you can live with (for instance, my husband and I have a Japanese restaurant we like a lot, his meal comes with a side salad and I usually take that, and then I ask for a side order of shrimp to put on top, and I eat that as my meal). This works out better because by getting only the sides, you're not paying for nor being tempted by the inevitable carb-based side that accompanies most restaurant plates. The tricky thing is that while traveling it's harder to store and/or find time to eat leftovers so I always end up feeling like I'm being wasteful if I order a full "meal" intended for someone with a normal stomach. A lot of this is going to potentially boil down to how flexible and accommodating your travel partners will be in helping you be able to eat places you can find something suitable. If they insist on eating bar food (or something along those lines) all week, it may end up being a little hard, so hang in there, do your best, it's not forever, and if you have a difficult couple days, just get back on track when you get home.

I do really well until nightfall and then struggle
pintsizedmallrat replied to Yahoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Budget for it. If you know you're likely to have a couple snacks after dinner, make room for it earlier in the day with your calories/protein. Learn what your behaviors are and try to "outsmart" yourself. Another thing that has helped me tremendously is to make my healthy snacks more convenient for myself than the unhealthy ones. These suggestions are obviously with the caveat that I don't know what stage of eating you're in, but this has worked for me. Cut up some veggies, make yourself some "snack boxes" for in the evening that are grab-and-go (maybe a Babybel Lite cheese and a handful of berries? Fresh mozzarella and tomato skewers? Olives and some sliced ham or turkey?). If you like sweet stuff, I make "yogurt sundaes" sometimes which is basically what it sounds like: greek yogurt (I like Dannon Light and Fit), with a handful of berries and a small amount of sugar-free chocolate chips or cocoa nibs, maybe some nuts? (Whatever fits with your diet that you like). It makes it feel more fun to call it a sundae. -

I don't know how far along you are. If you are really finding it hard to be without food in the evening then find things that fit your calorie limit. I always have a snack in the early evening. I am helped by having GERD because I can not eat for 2 hours before bed. It depends on my calorie intake for the day - as to what I eat. Sometimes its the remnants of my last meal that I could not manage earlier. If I am low on calories, I will have some blue cheese and fruit. If I am low on protein, then its a protein yogurt or pudding. There are always sugar free ice lollies in the freezer and small single serve packets of popcorn in the cupboard and melon in my fridge. -
How did the transition to maintenance look for you?
maintenanceman replied to Lisa XO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My weight loss progressively slowed down each month post-op. Over time, I needed more calories to be satiated. Finally, at 9 months post-op, the weight loss stopped right at my Ideal Body Weight. I'm currently 14 mo post-op, and I'm still experimenting with how much and what to eat to maintain. I currently eat about 1800-2000 calories a day. I don't follow a specific diet now, but I try to stay focused on protein, eating clean, limited (and healthy) snacking. My biggest challenge is grazing. My restriction makes it hard to eat actual meals, so I find myself eating "pieces" of food throughout the day... some cheese here, an apple there, a piece of ham, some greek yogurt, a protein bar, etc. It's working ok for now, but it's something I'm monitoring. Initially, I was tracking everything I ate, but I don't do that now. I keep a running tab in my head, and I'm trying to get to the point that I can regulate intuitively. I weigh myself every morning. I've regained about a pound from my lowest weight. -
I was the same way. A friend of mine who is nurse helped me but my issue was the sweetness, she added some FF greek yogurt, unflavored, the protein shake a a little coconut milk. It made a huge difference in my being able to tolerate the shakes without getting nauseous.
-
I buy New World unflavored protein Powder on Walmart.com and mix up my shakes in a Vitamix. Alot of the premade drinks are just not palatable to me and expensive. This way I can use any flavors I want and can be added to food if you want to omit the shakes. My nutritionist approved and 26G protein per serving. I'm finding I can't stomach milk now so glad I bought the whey isolate version. I add water, ice cubes, frozen yogurt cup. frozen fruit and stevia or crystal lite type flavors. I made an orange creamsicle recently. Yummm and my fav is strawberry. If I add a lot of frozen it tastes like a milkshake. Sometimes I slice banana into it and eat with a spoon

Yogurt… Oikos Pro

I had sleeve surgery in southern Indiana on 04/18 (7 Days ago.) I started walking as soon as I got to my overnight room because I had terrible gas pain when I came out of anesthesia. That helped a lot! I haven't had any unbearable pain since and I also haven't had to take any of the pain meds that were prescribed!
I guess right now I'm feeling a bit of anxiety about the full liquid diet.... Like, am I doing it right? I'm distributing the Protein Shakes throughout the day to get to 60 grams of Protein, and mid-day I eat an Oikos Triple Zero Greek yogurt with 15 grams of protein - this gets me to the 75 grams of protein mark. I sip one 28 ounce Gatorade Zero throughout the day and I'm trying to get as much Water down as I can. I'm walking about 2 miles a day.....
But..... I STILL FEEL HUNGRY ALL DAY LONG!!!
In my daydreams before the surgery, I thought I wouldn't feel hungry afterwards. Deep down, I know my body is still adjusting, but it's messing with my head a little bit... haha. With the intake above I'm already close to 400 calories a day, and as I understand it, we should try to stick around that marker. I'm not sure what else to add that would help me feel full that wouldn't make my calorie intake go up too high.
They say expectations are just resentments in waiting, so I'm gonna do my best to go with the flow... haha. Overall, I'm still VERY happy that I am able to do this. Just sharing what's on my mind is all.

Pre-op diet and no longer hungry?
kcuster83 replied to LindsayT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if it is common or not but I wasn't hungry on my pre-op either. I was only allowed 4 shakes and up to 6 select items from a list I was given. (fresh veggies, yogurt) I just assumed my mind and body were focused and on the same page for once and working together. haha -
Day 4 of conversion to bypass and MAJOR hernia repair
learn2cook replied to coccomo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m so sorry it’s been so difficult. I started the turn around by day five, like being able to sleep propped up in bed. I’ve never slept so deeply since having a child. I started sleeping like a child myself. You will get this. I stuck to water and Gatorade mostly the first week because everything hurt. Eventually I realized warm drinks felt better like low salt chicken bone broth, and warmed up dark chocolate pea protein drink. The third week was when I could try thicker things like frozen Greek yogurt, and jello. I used Omeprazole 40mg 2x a day and that horrible liquid spit 4x a day to help the inner lining heal. I walked around to distract myself and help with healing. Circulating blood and sunlight help a lot. I live near the ocean so I watched the waves and boats. Do whatever it takes to distract yourself. I took up crochet and guitar to keep my hands and mind busy off of food. These are still good hobbies for me. The double surgery is a doozy and you’re right, you do hurt more than other people are saying on here. You will definitely feel better very soon, about when your voice comes back clearer, it will be easier to swallow. It will all be worth it when you can sleep flat, sing, walk up stairs without feeling winded, talk melodiously, all because your throat isn’t sore and swollen! -
Yes. Preop is rough. Mine is 14 days. So I'm 7 days into it. The headaches are getting better, finally. I'm so over the shakes. I have 2 per day and 3 oz lean protein, a cup of veggies, and small amount of whole grain pasta or brown rice for dinner. I can also have a snack of cottage cheese, fruit, or yogurt. Yes, I miss variety too. But, like you said, this is temporary.

I’m three days out and trying yogurt for the first time today. It took an hour to get a protein shake down yesterday. I’m not looking forward to it! -

I actually love milk, but so many protein shakes taste awful to me. The one I’m tolerating is Fairlife Nutrition Plan in chocolate. But just after surgery even that tasted so gross to me. Took me a few days to finally be able to tolerate it again. Eggs aren’t part of my puréed stage and by most of my paperwork neither is cream of wheat since it’s mostly carbs. I’ve been mixing applesauce w plain Greek yogurt, having cottage cheese, and puréed lentil or black bean soup. Plain water is just fine by me at any temp which I’m so happy for because I can’t stand the Crystal light, Wylers light or any other sugar free mix in. The one thing I’m missing most is coffee because I don’t like black coffee. And skim milk doesn’t help lol. Water still isn’t at the levels it should be, but I’m just trying to get a little better with each day. I might have to wake up earlier to get those goals in because I agree the timing doesn’t allow to get it all in. -
Any April Surgery Dates?
kkomejko replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been feeling fine, just one spot on the right side of my tummy is sore if I lay on it for too long. I have been REALLY struggling with trying to meet my liquid and protein goals though. I am a very picky eater. I tried about a month or so before surgery to find protein drinks that I could stand (I HATE milk!!!). I found a few but now I really don't like them either. I've started my puree part of my diet and found out that I still do not like eggs, cream of wheat, or tofu. I've been trying to disguise my protein powder in my applesauce and yogurt. Did you find a way to sneak in more liquid? Between not having it 30 minutes before you eat and after you eat five times a day really limits the amount of time you have! I don't think I'm awake enough hours in the day -

Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain
BrandiBird replied to BrandiBird's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Update! I am one month and three weeks post-op, and I've had some dramatic improvements. Chewing thoroughly has helped the most with the pain, though some foods still do not go down easy (smoked sausage, heavily fried foods, etc.), but not a whole lot. I got sick once when I ate some asparagus and tomatoes (cooked), but I think I ate them too quickly. It was not very bad, but it was unpleasant, as getting sick always is. I also had blood tests, and all of my numbers went down! I'm most excited for my cholesterol, as it's 185 and was over 200 previously. Most days, I start with a protein shake for breakfast, then a higher protein pasta with lots of fiber (handfuls of spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.), and some pre-cooked meat for lunch. Lean Cuisine protein meals are perfect sizes for me right now, though I don't finish them all. I don't want to overly rely on frozen food, but on the days I don't feel like eating what I cooked, it's a nice option to have. Dinner is usually soup - Proper Good is my favorite, made with lots of bone broth for extra protein, or Amy's soups. Snacks include mini Babybel cheeses, protein puddings, Greek yogurt, and Braniac brain bars. I have PCOS, so I try to eat to balance my hormones with an emphasis on protein and a healthy amount of good fats and fiber. I have lost 35 pounds so far, and I can't tell a difference yet physically, but my energy levels are SO MUCH BETTER. I don't feel like I'm constantly fatigued, and I've been able to do loads of spring cleaning after a full work day. I was cleared to start resistance training, so in addition to walking for 30 minutes 5x a week, I'm incorporating 2-3x a week of resistance workouts. They're small right now, and not very intense (10 minutes tops), but I like to think it'll still benefit me. 😅 Thank you to everyone who's been replying to me. I really appreciate it! -
Hi Michelle, how did you know you had a stricture? Was the "food" just not getting into the stomach so you vomited? Was it painful to eat? I just moved on to pureed foods and am trying some thinned with yogurt Malto-O-Meal and it feels like it's getting to my stomach, but almost a little painful. Figure I'll stop eating it and see how it goes. I'm glad you're doing better!

I had a hard time with this too. What helped was getting it to a texture I could manage like @summerseeker mentioned. I added taco meat made with turkey (very finely minced while cooking) to refried beans with some cheese. If it was too thick or dry, I added a little sour cream. The other winner was pot roast and veggies. I ran it through the food processor with the carrots, onions, celery and broth. The meat was fine enough to add texture but not so fine as to be paste. I made sure there was more meat per serving than veggies, but the veggies and broth helped keep it soft enough to be easy on my tummy. Since each of these made me a few days of meals, I was out of the purée stage before I knew it. I had yogurts and cottage cheese as snacks. Some people like hummus. I just couldn’t eat hummus by the spoonful. I need pretzels or something lol Hang in there! 😊🤞

I had my surgery 4 days ago and have been wanting food too. It seems to me it is just the habit of eating as I am not hungry. So far I have found anything really cold in not sitting well. This morning I had decaf coffee with cremora and was fine until 20 m later when I started sipping on a protein shake. Threw it all up. then later for lunch. threw up more protein shake. The rest of the day I have kept down, chicken broth, water with crystal light, sugar free jello and premier protein clear drink with no problem. I think maybe I need to wait another day before I start the the yogurt and pudding. Although I did drink some ensure at the hospital with no problems. I most certainly have to take small sips and I cannot imagine trying to chug anything, I was afraid to drink the cup of barium for the upper gi they did after the hospital. Dont feel bad for yourself. The first day after I was so sorry I did this but that is changing. Ive been keeping myself busy talking to family, watching TV, taking some walks around the house and yard and playing solitaire. One day at a time.

Okay. Started out with a lot of pain in my chest and my feet were very swollen, thankfully 4th day the swelling went down and now for the most part the only pain I have is when I eat. Been on soft foods for two days and vegetables and fruits do not go down well. Yogurt has been the easiest.

I am on day 4 after bypass and tried my decaf coffee with coffee mate and threw it up. Then for lunch I tried some strawberry protein shake and threw it up. I have kept down chicken broth, clear protein drin, hot tea, water with crystal light and sugar free jello, I am think maybe the coffee mate and the protein shake is too rich yet. Afraid to try the greek yogurt or pudding yet. Did anyone else have this

You can have water in between and have shakes/broths/yogurt for meals. and stick to an eating schedule. I was actually hungry after surgery, but It subsided once my body realized that it was not eating outside of schedule. I started getting head hunger at month 2 and it was easier to identify because it was specific.
