PRE-OP LIQUID DIET CHEATER
Jangy03253 replied to Miss_Sleeve_Bound's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Debac, really?? Did you have to go on any kind of diet to lose a few lbs pre op? Miss sleeve the more i read i think its doctors choice? My ins called for 6 month supervised diet no requirement on weight loss. My doctor requires the 2 week liquid pre op for less complications in surgery. My husbands cousin did not have any diet what so ever. Her surgery is the rny on the 11 th. Totally didf then what my doctor andbinsurance requires. By the way my surgerybis DS. So may be a bit diff req than sleeve?? -
Hello everyone, my current employer's health insurance does not have any bariatric benefits, neither will the new health insurance for 2016. Any suggestions as to where I could get health care insurance? Other than Obamacare? I have a complication on my sleeve and I need revision. Thank you.

Is the sleeve safe long term?
swimbikerun replied to Cutechiq10's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Think about it: if the biggest things you have to worry about is Iron, Vit D, issues, those can be solved by taking some sort of supplement or watching the diet. Iron pills and infusions are here. Think about obesity: cancer rates higher, hypertension, diabetes (and all of its deals). Which one do you want to either live with or die by? Check out those of us with complications. I'm not the only one who would say get the surgery. I do want to make a plug that a recent study (and I need to find it) is that by year 2 people stop taking Vitamins but another study also said you get enough food in at year 2. Wouldn't it be better just to have your testing done by a PCP and adjust your food/supplements accordingly? Face it: with every surgery there can be issues. These are now safer than hip replacement, but you need to do your own homework. Research. Ask some major tough questions of the doctors. Most of all, I had an eye doc who gave us his worst case: lawsuit, only one he had. I read it and researched it at the court house. Wasn't docs fault. I had some issues and the care was EXEMPLARY. Any problems, they fix them. I dont ask for free care either. -
Emotional ups and downs after surgery?
jdmama911 replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's interesting seeing all the individual answers here. Im personally waiting for the emotional part. Im 3.5 weeks post op and haven't felt any different emotionally yet. Even during the gritty first week of feeling miserable and slight complication from my allergies, I still haven't experienced the emotional ups or downs. I expect Im going to get hit in the face with the crying stick one day soon. ::hugs:: to those of you could use it. -
How long did you take off work for your VSG?
ProudGrammy replied to pattyor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@pattyor "tried and true" statement...... "the one thing we all have in common is that we're all different"!!!! as you've read above, people have taken anywhere from a few days to a few weeks etc the doc that told you that people might have surgery on a friday, and work on monday is/can be true in many cases - people stayed home for awhile, (a week, whatever) not necessarily due to any "serious" complications many people are extremelllly tired, weak et al if they have the sick time - they will/can use it many people can afford financially/or sick leave to take off from work longer for me - i immediately continued my "job" i'm retired its good to rest, relax - take care of you!!!! then of course, their are some slackers/ goofballs that just don't want to work!!! you probably need/should tell your office (for their planning) about how long you will need to take off maybe say 2-3 weeks, and go back sooner/earlier if you are able to listen to your body don't overdue i've heard from informed sources that April 14th is the best day to have surgery good luck speedy recovery kathy -
I'm 57 and had sleeve 6/11. Wanted to cry first three days but feeling pretty good last couple days. No complications. No nausea. 13 year diabetic journey "resolved" according to my doctors. I am home with wife and family and living on protein shakes and Popsicles ain't great, but that will pass. Romance with wife continues. All appears to be well. Just waiting for my first bit of food and a golf course. I took two weeks off work but might go in after seeing doctor Friday. Too old? You are a couple decades under that. Consider everything, but age is not an issue for you. I needed a pause in major life upheavals (new marriage, lost my mom, sister was sick, job displacement, college placement for kids, etc., etc.). When I saw a break in the action and still had insurance, I did the research, set up the appointments, and went in before I could back out. Good luck.

Surgery last Dec at 62. I'm 5+ months out and down 72 lbs. No complications, very smooth recovery. I feel better than I have in decades and my doctors are thrilled! My surgeon has said that she finds her older patients actually do better than many of the younger ones. They follow directives and don't feel the need to "challenge" what she and the nutritionist say. I think this is because for us older folks we realize what is at stake. It's not primarily about appearance... it's about health. And at my age this is my shot to get it right. I picked my surgeon for her experience and the confidence I have in her. Best decision I could possibly have made!

Don't want to discourage you but I've been unable to work for 18 months and am still struggling to get disability. I too, am diabetic and have dealt with multiple complications. Good luck. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Anyone else experience a long wait time before surgery?
luv2bme replied to phthaloblue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Overall, the process may seem extensive, but I have came to the point where I remind myself it is for my own good. I started the process with my informational meeting in May, have completed all of the steps and recieved approval for isnruance coverage this week. And my insurance did not require a 6 month dietary consultings. Unfortunately, my surgeon has a 2 month waiting period for surgery dates, so I am hoping to have my surgery performed at some point in April. GOod luck on your endeavors, it seems lengthy but it's all for your own benefit. Better to have the proper work-up prior than to have complications. It will come fast, as my process, all 11 months seemed like it was just months. -
You might want to give your surgeon a call. An upper GI study could verify that everything's OK in there. Be careful of "super restriction". It can lead to complications like a band slip, band erosion, esophageal or pouch dilation.

I had a tummy tuck in 2008 and had lots of problems with adhesions and nerves trapped in them causing lots of nerve pain. For years I couldn't move around very much without severe pain. Gradually I tried various therapies and drugs and found one that masks the pain and I function reasonably normally now as long as I don't try to do too much. I cannot exercise, mainly because my abdominal problems have caused other problems and weakness - I have chronic lumbar back pain (caused by weak core muscles, caused by poor mobility). I am 54, 2 years into menopause and have steadily put on weight - firstly after my tummy tuck and even worse since starting my menopause. I think I want a gastric sleeve - a band seems to end up with complications too often. But no-one on any of these forums ever mentions adhesions. Some questions - I hope you all can help Don't they (adhesions) happen with VSG surgery? Will the adhesions I already have mean that I am not a candidate for surgery anyway? Will regret my surgery again? Any advice welcome. I am worried that I will just continue to get bigger and bigger, will get diabetes, have a heart attack and always be miserable and in pain. Will a VSG solve my problems - make me thinner, happier, healthier, fitter? (I had a breast lift a year before the tummy tuck and that was fine so surgery doesn't always go wrong for me)

VSG after long term band removal?
samanthaftw replied to samanthaftw's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'd just like to add I'm not shopping doctors because I was told something I didn't like. I just was treated very poorly by staff and was made to feel belittled and like I was at fault for my lapband complications though I had no control over a port flip. -
Anyone else's post op like this?
anaxila replied to Big Opie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did bypass at a center of excellence. My surgeon was the founder of the center and has been in the business for decades. His program's guidelines are unique, from what I've read here. No shakes, no liquid pre-op phase, straight to purees/soft foods. I had scrambled eggs in the hospital the morning after surgery and was working out at the gym after a week. My recovery was a breeze with no complications. Now I am 6 months out and have lost 105 pounds. Every surgeon is different and so is every patient. I think this is particularly true of the surgeons who have been at it for a long time and have learned what works best with their particular surgical / cutting style and habits. Follow your program and no one else's. -
6 Days Post Op - Hungry....
Cervidae replied to Birdy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not going to tell you what to do but the rules are there for a reason. This isn't like dieting we previously tried, where if we messed up and cheated, we could just say "whoops" and start again. Eating things that your stomach is not healed for can cause HUGE complications, pain, ripping stitches, even death if your stomach leaks and you go into sepsis and can't get treatment in time. My advice is... toughen up, stick to the plan, and soon this frustration with Protein shakes will be over. It's not worth the danger and the pain, and you've come too far to make a rookie mistake now! -
You seriously need to talk with your doctor and surgeon about this, and do it NOW. You don't want a whole lot of complications that put you in dire straits. All of this NEEDS to be figured out BEFORE you go into surgery, And if your doctors don't know what to do, GET NEW ONES! All the best to you...

Lapband revised to bypass but scared!
band2bypass15 replied to Coco6983's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've had many surgeries...c-section, nephrectomy, gallbladder removal, lapband. When my band slipped I lost all hope and gained all my weight back. I had RNY less than two months ago and I'm already down 50 lbs!!! The doctor took out the lapband at the same time. I only stayed in the hospital 2 days and have had no complications. I was scared to death, but this has been the best weight loss decision i've ever made. In my opinion RNY is the way to go. -
I saw a friend for the first time since my surgery (I've lost 40 lbs since she saw me last) and btw she's well over 200 lbs herself. She complimented me nicely and was very sweet and then she launched into a rant about how wrong these people are who lose weight from having surgery! I was stunned. If I told her I had surgery what was she going to do, take back all the compliments? I'm a chicken because I just listened and didn't straighten her out. I should have at least said something like... I'm impressed when anybody can get the extra weight off no matter how they do it. She obviously doesn't understand that weight loss surgery is NOT the easy way out to the very complicated and dangerous health problem of obesity. *end of rant*

Im hoping we can work together on this ebcause i just read your story and let me tell you a little about my story -- LAP-BAND® 9/2005 02/06 - slip 03/06 - re band throught the past 5 years I have STRUGGLED and the ONLY time i lost weight was when the bad was so tight I barely could drink water. One day I would be able to eat yogurt, the next day it would get stuck -- it was this way constantly and Id never know what i coul or couldnt eat unless i tried - so in teh end I have a band with 1/2 fill so i can eat normally but it defeats the purpose of even having TWO surgeries because here I am weighig in 10lbs les then my 1st surgery and 10 more then my second.... Just went to the Dr. yesterday and he suggested I look into the bypass revision. He made it sound really good but he also didnt leave out the fact that because it is a revision - the risks are automatically higher for compications. I sit here wondering if my body had this many compications with a simple band who will ti react to a bypass? Maybe I will do great with bypass and i will finally see results Ive been striving to see forever what is I am the 15% that thigs go drastically wrong My job now covers this revision - if I waitr health care might change ................................... I too dont know what to do! Complications? What kind of complications? Like is its "dumbing" more often.. k I can handle that.. If its leakge... that can cause death.. IDK I wish I could survey 100 ppl who had this themself! Help for us both What ever we decide , we r not alone!

I suffer from depression so I was a bit sensitive after the surgery. It took about a month and even though right now I'm struggling to find my sweet spot I'm really happy I did it. Part of me thinks maybe I should have even gone further and gotten the sleeve but then I think of the complications that could of happend and I think the band was the safest option for me.

Harmanm, do you mind sharing why you had yours removed? Did you have complications?

Has anyone experienced a leak due to drinking protein prior to 5 weeks?
sleeverv replied to sleeverv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No complications at all. I am 99.9% sure that she meant all proteins including shakes because I specifically asked her. But just to be 100% sure I just emailed her again. When she answered I will respond to this email. I thought it was strange too. I asked her where will I get my energy from and she said you'll be surprised the body is amazing -
Complications?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to tiff062712's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
None. I couldn't be happier with my surgery experience, recovery, and progress so far. It was my first surgery ever so I had no idea what to expect. The worst part of the whole experience was the pre-op uncertainty. My advice? Do everything you are asked to do by your team (pre- and post-op) even if you think you can't or think it is silly. Everything you are asked to do is for your benefit and to minimize risks and complications. -
I'm admitting to the internet world.....
Watermelon commented on Watermelon's blog entry in The Confused Lap Bander
Well, I'm admitting to the internet world that I was banded on 7/10/6 by Dr. Jay Nirmal S. Jayaseelan, who I will refer to as Dr. Jay from now on. This took place in Dallas, TX. Only 3 family members and 2 friends know that I have had the surgery. Took off a week from work and didn't tell anyone. Just didn't want to invite any criticisms. I been at my job for almost 3 years and my coworkers have seen my struggles with my weight. I've lost up to 70 lbs since I've been at my job and have gained back 80-85 lbs. I've been overweight and struggling with my weight since the 2nd grade and I'm now 33 years old. My starting weight pre surgery is 252. The first time I applied for the surgery with my insurance over 7 months ago, I was declined and gave up. A couple of months ago, I contacted Dr. Jay's staff to see what we could do because I was considering just doing the self pay. The staff suggested that we try to resubmit the paper work and I just agreed to it. I had totally forgotten about it and one day when I was coming home, there in the mail was my approval letter. I was happy but was sure it was later going to come back that I was not really approved. Scheduled the surgery, had the surgery without any complications and now I'm 2 weeks post op wondering where I'm headed. I'm still in shock I guess, it doesn't seem like anything was done. Sure, I have the few scares and slight discomfort, but I'm still eating what I want. I'm positive that my decision was the right decision, but there still is that uncertainty.
