Protein shake interchangeable with water?

Sorry it's been so rough! I had 24 hours of puking around 4 post-op and it was terrible, so my heart goes out to you. I hope your recovery starts snowballing now and a week from today you feel *normal*🤗 My plan counts protein drinks and soups towards liquids 100%. ( And for the record my "output" has been regular and the right color and whatnot, so I've not had reason to second guess it). I didn't love premeir protein's clear, but I could keep down propel (the individual sticks) either in hot water or well-watered down. I also love Lonolife powdered bone broth, it has 10 grams of protein and just settled really well. Lastly, a protein drink (fairlife or premeir), 8 oz of skim Fairlife milk, and then 8 oz of decaf coffee has really been helping me get down protein (43 grams) and fluid (~32 oz). It just seems to settle better than a straight up protein drink. It just takes a couple hours to drink, but I don't mind sipping on it that long 😅 Lastly, I did try mixing some powdered pb or regular pb into a blended shake because my plan okayed that. That can bump up calories 👍 I just need to taste something different/different consistency, so I haven't done it again. There were a few days there everything tastes weird and nasty, but thankfully that has gone for the most part! -

Solid solid point. I think I just expected to still lose weight while gaining muscle, I have been pretty rotund so I wanted to be able to see muscle as opposed to just my own roundness. I have decided I'm not going to weigh myself till next month and maybe check every two weeks after that. Yeah, Im thinking I'll leave the groups. Seeing other peoples posts and the responses in them is really disheartening. I will say that I took a picture at the gym and compared it to my 1 week pre-op picture and I can definitely see a difference (I'll attach it cause Im so pleased)! I'm still going to talk to my doctor next Monday and get his opinion to make sure I'm going about things the correct way. -

Congrats, I’m so excited for you! I’ve been on the forums here with you for a bit and remember your surgery getting postponed 😭 but now it’s finally happening! Yay! I had my surgery on 3/13, so one week out. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be: have a heating pad nearby!! It helps with pain and gas and is my “bff” these days lol Good luck!! Let us know how it went. We are rooting for you. -

Hi all, new here. Well, of course I've lurked here at times over the years but ran away every time.. A little bit about me, been heavy most of my adult life, managed to live fine keeping most side effects at bay. Sleep apnea, use a machine, HBP under control with meds. No diabetes or other issues. Three years ago I hit my highest at 450 and as covid got rolling I started to exercise a bit more and watch diet a bit better. Then all the wheels started to fall off lol. Knees giving me some problems which then led me to find out I was bone on bone for both knees. So I continued to get better on the diet and switched to biking and rowing. Phentermine/Topiromate helped along the way and ultimately lost about a hundred pounds. Had to stop those though when I had an Afib incident. Kept myself in the 350 range but man has this plateau been tough. Doc has me on ozempic, A1C was also starting to creep up, to see if that will help but it really hasn't done much. I'm ok with diet but still not where i need to be to lose another 75 pounds, which is my target to get knee surgery. I truly believe that once I get my knees fixed I can be active enough to aid the weight loss. It's tough now with the knee. So why am I here.... well my Primary and my cardiologist have both said it's time to really think about surgery. They both feel there are too many metabolic/hormonal challenges to continue my same approach. I met with the surgeon yesterday and he's recommended a sleeve. I'm at my whits end and feel like I have no other choice, but at the same time I read these stories about GERD, constipation and all these other side effects I turn around and say eff it, it's just not worth it. At least I'll die happy... I know, not exactly healthy, but I'm being honest... I've started the process, have a meeting with Nutritionist next week and psych and Endoscopy are after that. Likely can't get this done until August so I have some time to reconcile in my head the future, but right now I'm a bit overwhelmed and a little defeated. I'm going to poke around here some more, thanks for reading. Mark -

I went off caffeine the second week of my 14-day pre-op diet. I also have one cup a day (and have for many years). If you’re going to quit, just do it the day before surgery and let the anesthesia and pain meds take care of that headache for you lol seriously, though, your body probably doesn’t need the physical withdrawals in addition to the surgery. That’s why I quit beforehand. I started back on decaf (one cup a day as usual) as soon as I was confident I could get all 64oz of water in to help with the diuretic effect of coffee. the diuretic was my doctor’s biggest concern since dehydration is a nightmare for gastric patients after surgery. Use care. Good luck!

I would suggest something about the infamous three-week stall. It seems like there's a post almost every day from someone who's about three weeks out, frantic because they haven't lost any weight in several days. I really wish more clinics would tell patients about this early stall, because it happens to the majority of us, and most people don't know about it ahead of time so they freak out when it happens. also, something about how the rate of weight loss is dependent on many factors, some of which you have little to no control over, like genetics, how muscular you are, starting BMI, age, gender. And also not to expect to lose 30+ lbs the first month, because that's not common with people unless they're the size of the people on "My 600 lb Life". Just let them know that if they stick to their clinic's plan, the weight WILL come off. Their ultimate success is dependent on how compliant they are, not their rate of weight loss. -

it's good to have it checked out, although this far out from surgery, the usual culprit is low blood sugar. I started having issues with that at about two years out. I went in for a workup and they tested everything - glucose, blood pressure, ears (it can also be due to an imbalance in your inner ear), even urine (not sure what that test would have been looking for with that, but whatever..). Everything came back normal, but I noticed it again about two weeks later. It was a couple of hours after I'd eaten a piece of cake at a retirement party. I usually just eat a couple of forkfuls, but that time I'd eaten the whole piece. So i let my PCP know. She said the problem was probably low blood sugar, then - it's just that my glucose level happened to be normal when I had the workup. She suggested I just eat something about every three hours - either a protein or, if a carb, then pair it with a protein. Seems to have resolved the issue for me. -

So sorry you are experiencing this. I think you need to find another bariatric surgeon & discuss your options. A revision to bypass will help you lose more weight (maybe not a lot but some) so yiu can look into knee replacement surgery in the future & it certainly will help with your gerd. You can not survive on shakes & protein bars. Besides not getting the nutrients your body needs to function effectively, the low calorie diet will be slowing your metabolism down more. You did lose 100lbs. That’s almost a third of yourself. That’s something to celebrate. Remember the average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. So, not knowing your height or what would be your healthier weight, I’d expect you may have been pretty close to that statistic. So your stall, which are very common & can occur many times, may have been you reaching your new weight set point & stabilising. I find it ironic that your surgeon complained your sleeve was too big. I mean they did the surgery so if the sleeve is too big that’s on them not you.

Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain

Sometimes your tummy is just not ready (not healed enough) to progress through to the next stage of your restricted diet. You may need to go to a purée stage & not straight to soft. Sometimes soft is just not soft enough yet. It’s not uncommon for people to need a few more days on a stage or to go back a stage. Coarse or dry foods can cause that stuck feeling & can result in the foamies (sticky thick salvia you spit up & then you may regurgitate the food that is stuck). Keep your food moist/sloppy so it goes down more easily & smoothly. Use gravies, sauces, stock, milk, water, mayo, or whatever complements what you’re eating. Plus your tummy can be like a petulant temper throwing two year old tolerating a food one day but not the next. It may be the taste or the texture that sets it off. Avoid that food for a week & try again. Make sure you’re eating small bites (part or level teaspoons) slowly. Leave a couple of minutes between bites. If it persists & these hints don’t help contact your surgeon. -
Hi fed- up. So sorry to hear about your situation. To answer your questions- I had one and then the 2nd infusion about a week later. No not painful at all- just an IV poke. The first infusion took an hour and a half- just to watch for side effects. The second infusion was about 20 minutes. No major Side effects. Kinda tired the day after. The infusion felt a little cold going in. Perhaps a little achy in the bones the night after the infusion- but all mild and transient. However there are major adverse effects risks like low phosphorus in the blood that could lead to increase in fractures and other yucky stuff. By the way - The name of the medication was Injectafer. Hi all, hoping someone can help shed a little more light as I’m at a loss here. Up until the last three months, I have had no issues - but since, any time in a public setting, I will get sick to my stomach, dizzy, hot, and light headed. Yes, I take my vitamins and follow a good diet my surgeon recommends being a year out. I have an appointment set up with my surgeon however they are leaning towards an anxiety issue. My thing is, I don’t feel anxious? And these episodes have happened in familiar places around familiar people. I’m just at a loss and it’s becoming almost crippling. Any thoughts? 😭 -
I've tried apps in the past, but figuring out the calories, carbs & protein and all for things I made at home I found very frustrating. During my pre-op clearance process (surgery is scheduled for 3 weeks away) I was placed in a weekly group session with psych. One of the things we discussed was keeping a food diary. We were told in the class that food diaries are the #1 best predictor of weight loss. What helped me was when I was advised not to focus on the macros, or calorie counts but to focus on what I ate, when I ate it and how I felt. I whipped up a spreadsheet on Google Sheets and just go to it on my phone and list it down, it was frustrating at first but I found it has really helped me these last two months that I have been doing it. I'm hopeful that it has helped me be on the right footing in my post-op "new life." I hope that helps.

I was sleeved 08/2017. It's been a constant struggle. I was told by the surgeon that I wasn't progressing as well compared to others. That my sleeve is bigger than he wanted & my metabolism is slow & I needed to work harder. I do have severe GERD but I have learned to work around that. I found out I have tachycardia. Also then & even worse now mobility issues. I couldn't vigorously exercise due to having grade 4 Osteoarthritis in my left knee. I stuck to the program & went from 323 to 223. I stalled & went into a deep depression. I wasn't losing unless I ate 800 calories or less. I gained all of my weight back due to decreased mobility & depression. I fell off the wagon per say. I now need a hip & knee replacement plus my right knee is almost just as bad as my left. I'm in chronic pain. For me to have surgery I need to lose weight. Nobody would do the surgery a few years ago when I was thinner stating I'm too young blah, blah. My quality of life has dwindled the last 2 years and I gained it all back plus 20lbs. For the last 8 weeks I have been using my fitness Pal to login my food diary. I'm eating every 3-4 hrs mini meals. Substituting 2-3 meals with protein shakes/bars to obtain my protein goal. I would lose weight 1 week than the next gain back & forth. I don't understand. In 8 weeks I've lost 12lbs. I went from 343 to 328 to yo-yo 331. I have experimented & it doesn't seem to matter if I eat 800 calories or 1000 or under 1200. I gain/lose weight. I always eat no more than 1200 and no less than 800. Does anyone have any tips. Hi All, I have low Iron. I just received my 2nd infusion 2 days ago. I am happy to answer any questions From my understanding, the low iron is a complication of the gastric sleeve, as it causes me to not be able to absorb enough iron. I tried everything I could think of, but it didn't help. I felt terrible for a longtime with significant fatigue. After the infusions I feel rather weak and tired for a day, but overall feeling mucho better with increase physical energy and mental clarity-- but I also started keto a week ago, and that feels good ,too. It sounds like my hematologist will redraw my iron levels in a about 2-3 months to see if I need more infusions. Yes it was very expensive-- about $1700 per infusion (my insurance is covering it).

Hi there! I had my VSG + hiatal hernia repair surgery on March 7th, 2023. I am 13 days post-op today, and at my one week-check up, I was approved to eat soft foods, take medication whole, and start gentle resistance exercises. I am having moments of pain when eating certain foods. It hasn't been often. The first time was when I tried soft scrambled eggs, and I've since paused eating eggs because they just don't feel good going down. I've since eaten various types of soft foods - refried beans, pudding, soups, and tuna fish. The latter is one that I really enjoy and it goes down well. It's also how I try to get a lot of my protein in for the day. Today, though, I was eating some tuna and a little mayo, and it hurt. It felt like someone was poking me in upper center of my chest and it went through to my back. It's the first time I've had the sensation of feeling like food was "stuck" and that it might come back up. Luckily it didn't, but it was super painful for about five minutes of deep breathing. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and what might help? I can accept some foods not going down well for now, but I haven't had a problem with tuna until now! Any advice?

Surgon told us (my daughter & I) that if that happens go back to a full liquid diet for 2 weeks & then start eating the way he told us at the beginning. No more then 3.5 oz at a time, 3 meals a day with small healthy snacks in between. Or check out the Fast metabolism diet by Haylie Pomroy. Even though there is no way I can eat as much food as she wants a person to eat. Following each of her phases in ordered helped me get down to my goal weight! -

Thank you for your responses. Maybe this does apply to some but it sounds like it is more of a hit and miss and should be taken with extreme skepticism. I'm just over two weeks out from surgery and lost 9 lbs the first week and nothing since. I realize I am in the dreaded stall but it certainly doesn't bode well for my progress if using a 3 month formula to calculate my total loss! -
What does 'feeling full' mean to you?

At 5 days post-op, your feeling of fullness is going to be hampered by the fact you just had a lot of the nerves in your stomach cut 5 days ago and they're going to take a lot longer than that to grow back. You need to be measuring what you eat for the first week or two because you may eat more than you can handle otherwise. The feeling of being full can take a lot of different forms and some people report things like their nose running or their saliva production increasing (I'm one of those runny nose people; I swear I'm spending everything I used to on food on boxes of tissues now). -
I think a lot of people that have never been under feel that way before hand. I had had two c-sections prior, this was nothing compared to that...lol But seriously, it's not as bad as you are probably expecting. I think the worst part was the gas pain right after, but that is usually gone by the next day. after that, you are more sore than in pain. Getting out of bed can feel crappy, but you get past that by weeks end. Just keep thinking about the result and how worth it its going to be! a week or so of discomfort for a new life. Not so bad.

The guidelines vary so much between doctors. I’m in NYC and went thru NYU and their program requires 3 weeks of full liquid.
