2. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I was in the Weight Loss phase for around 7 months and then I transitioned into the Maintenance phase. Prior to surgery, hunger was constantly continuously gnawing at my bones. But after surgery, I completely lost my hunger. About a year later after surgery, my hunger returned. But it was not as strong as prior to surgery. The strategy during the Weight Loss phase is different than the strategy during the Maintenance stage. I am not suggesting you are in the Maintenance phase yet. It is a tad bit early. But someday you will transition into this phase and I put the strategy I use in the Maintenance phase in the following article. So this is for future reference. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf I believe some individuals are experiencing hunger during the Weight Loss phase because they are consuming too many carbohydrates. Meals should always begin with Protein first.
  3. Woohoo.. Also, does anyone get there Protein powder at GNC? I dont order much online and its the only major chain like that around here.. Im having trouble finding the right Protein Powder. Obviously something high in protein for not much liquid, and no added sugar.

    Prayers needed!

I would wait for open enrollement and change insurance carriers. Do some research to see what options you have and what their requirements are. This is just a delay! Best Wishes

  7. I was always cold too. until I started the vitamin B-12 shots. I take them once a week , and you should take your vitamins and protein. I know it's hard sometimes, but try and eat beans, cheese, fish, and cottage cheese if you will not take protein shakes.
  8. Hi all, Been looking to get banded in July this year. I am self funded as I don't want to have to wait a year or two on the NHS, I have saved £2000 so far, but it's killing me to do so. I dont think im going to be able to get the 7k they're asking for in most UK places, but i'd rather have it here for the aftercare. I also dont know if the NHS have to give you aftercare or not?I am looking at finance options and Belgium, can anyone offer advice????? Thanks P.:rolleyes2:

Hi. You are so right about all the food commercials. Did your surgeon give you a post-op diet?? Like the pre-op diets, there seem to be many different post-op diets, and I think the important thing is to follow what your doctor wants you to do. Mine was a week of clear liquids (broth, sf jello, sf popsicles, tea, Propel water, juices), a week of liquids (protein shakes, strained creamy soups, thinned cream of wheat, sf pudding), 1 week of soft foods/mushies (well cooked mushy veggies - no stalks, soft canned fruit, scrambled eggs, baby food - yuck, thinned mashed potatoes, ff refried beans, lf cottage cheese, soft ripe bananas), and then on to regular foods. Eight 8 oz. glasses of water the whole time of course. I know what you mean about wanting to chew on something solid. My pre-op diet was 4 weeks and then I had to follow that post-op diet. I was dreaming about "real" food. Good luck to you - it gets better!!! Take care!! Becky
  12. I have been banded over a year and I fight head hunger constantly. I call it emotional eating. I find that once I eat soemthing not "legal" it sets me on a binge. I have found that if I go back to 1 or 2 days of full liquids with my protein drinks as my staple and clean out the bad carbs, I can get myself back under control. Hope this helps.

Please share your tips for battling head hunger.

You can chew gum. You're just not supposed to swallow it. I chew gum sometimes when I am trying not to eat. Head hunger really is hard. Sometimes I really crave sweets. If I don't eat them, I don't crave them as much. I try to eat mainly Protein and veggies and the head hunger isn't as bad. I don't keep junk food in the house. I eat sugar free popcicles in the evening which are like 10 calories.
  14. Thank you for the compliment, Mishay. #1. Preparedness #2. I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. After years of dieting, losing and gaining more back than I lost, I KNEW I would have a tool to help me keep it off. #3. Determination #4. Following EVERY rule my doctor set for me. #5. Journaling my food intake which included calories, fiber, protein grams, etc. Hope this helps!:frown:

    The truth

Hey Cloe....good question. Yup, you'll have to find whatever works for you. Some want/need to count the calories, fat, Protein etc...others don't and still others are somewhere inbetween. I don't (& refuse to) treat having the band like a diet. I will never "count" anything (other than my Water or I lose track). During the week, at work, it is relatively easy for me to get all my water in...on the wknds, it is a lot harder (ie. not sitting at my desk drinking water all day). I eat 3 meals a day and snack when I want to (try for no more than 2 Snacks a day). I just make wiser/healthier choices and eat less. The eating less is by willpower right now since I have no restriction. The eating healthier means to me trying to get more protein in (but no counting) and choosing the "healthier" carbs. Have I had some chips? yes. Have I had chocolate? Yes. But I will have a handful of chips as opposed to the whole bag or one aero bar square as opposed to the entire bar...etc etc. I do not intend on depriving myself of anything or this won't work for me in the long run and I feel angry and resentful. Oh, and of course I do exercise. A LOT. Then again, I always have exercised a lot...but it didnt do much (mostly because of the PCOS). So far, everything is working for me and I'm getting the average 1-2 lbs weight loss a week. I hope that it will be "easier" (?) or a higher average of loss once I have restriction (going for the 3rd fill next week...so hopefully the 3rd time is the charm). Yes, it is hard to juggle....but you just have to make the time...for YOU...ya know? Generally speaking, women make the time for "others" (ie. spouses, children, relatives, work etc) but not themselves...time to change that habit!
  16. It varies day to day.... but i usually try to keep myself busy so i dont hink about food at all...

But being a female and having that lovely little friend visit every month dont help either.. thats when its the worst for me. I usually can shut them up by saying i want to look good by...... (my Vegas trip in aug of 08) But it is so much harder when you crave chocolate & potato chips...

Just take it on day at a time... Remember baby steps

(but it has gotten a lot better since march)
Or you can try to have a little snack that has Protein and gets you full so you no longer have that desire...

Almonds work very well for me i can only have 4-6 of them and im done

    Need Protein drink ideas

Check out Isopure. It tastes like Gatorade, comes in a bunch of flavors, and has 40grams of whey Protein in a 20oz bottle. I buy mine from GNC. I also started drinking Protein shakes from Jay Robb. (his name and picture are on the package) (GNC) It tastes so smooth you forget you are drinking a Protein shake.

    How many grams of PROTEIN?

My doctor says to try for 70 grams of protein and 30 grams of carbs but ismuch more concerned about just getting in at least 48 oz of fluids for the first few weeks.
  20. At walmart I found this stuff in the frozen fish section called U-Stuff-It. It's made with real crabmeat, shrimp and Lobster ( some imitations stuff too) and it tastes great. It goes down really well and has 11 grams of Protein in a 3 oz serving. The calories are 160 for a 3 oz serving but I am always full after that much so 160 is great for me. Super easy to prepare and the best part is the price is only $3.89 for five 3 oz servings. I've been worried about getting my protein and I don't like fishy fish but this stuff is really good. Just had to share!

    New to you

@@itstimealready - thinking you meant 196 - and great job! I was 227 on the day of my surgery - am 212 today - 5 1/2 weeks later. I lost 7 lbs in the first week in addition to the Water weight from the surgery. I stalled after the 1st week for 4 weeks and have been averaging about 3/4 lb a day since the stall broke. The stalls can get discouraging - but I just stick with the process. I had fluids the first 2 weeks - the Protein shake I could drink before the surgery my stomach didn't like afterwards so really had to work hard to get the protein in. After 2 weeks I could eat pureed foods which made it a bit easier. At four weeks I was allowed to move to soft foods and that is where I am at now for a few more days. With soft foods I am able to get most of my protein in with food and only sometimes need to drink some shake - or a drink a shake on days I just don't feel like eating anything. I know what you mean by people telling you that you can lose the weight on your own 'ugh' - I had that, too. But from all my dieting through the years my metabolism had slowed down and I ended up with a lot of co-morbidities which are slowing resolving themselves. As long as I get in all my protein and fluids I feel great - and sometimes that is the hardest work I do all day!! But it is all worth it. Good luck on your surgery! This is a great website and the folks on here have great experience and wisdom.
  22. I don't do protein drinks, but when I was on my post-op liquid diet, I had 3 CIB drinks a day. Each is 20 grams of protein and 230 calories. What I did was: 1 packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (get the blue box -- no-sugar added) 1 cup skim milk 1/3 cup powdered milk. Mix it all up and drink! I would have 1/2 of one every 2-3 hours during the day, for a total of 60 grams of protein, 690 calories. Since we can have more calories than that, I also had soups, koolaid (sugar free), whatever.

Thank you all for all the concern...I've been good I went home and told my sister I was going to eat, but she gave me this look...and reminded me, it was only an hour or so until bed...So I made a Protein shake ...then took a shower. The next day was so much better! ONLY 6 MORE DAYS TO GO

Need some help with this liquid diet

I like the pro perfomance 95 from gnc. 25 g soy protein + the amount from the skim milk. Icould eat three a day and not want to kill every human. The taste was good for me- I liked the vanilla, choclate - but there are other flavors cookies and cream and bannana and strawberry. I have mixed in berries or cinamon or 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee or a bannana to vary the flavor and get me some more carbs (I was nursing at the time) or a punch! I occasionally still use one when I am to tight (for what ever reason about 1/3 the time in the morning) or when I am making shakes for dh and the kids with ice cream. I am a big believer in soy protein! And occasionally I need it to keep my protein above 75 g (again - I am nursing still)
