    What can I eat

I did it in November I now eat chicken thighs , tuna and fish still meat hard on my stomach I eat half or even quarter tortilla eggs are great too I eat lots of lettuce too and grilled peppers but I avoid all other carbs you don’t need it anyway
  2. Yes, he wanted to switch me to gastric bypass. He made my stomach too small. I also have H pylori, which I don't understand was overlooked. He is a kind man and his aftercare was great, but I still have depression from the whole thing.
  3. I had the gastric bypass in 2004 lost 100 pounds and unfortunately have gained them back. I’m looking into getting a revision surgery. It’s just revising my gastric bypass I’m not switching to any kind of different weight loss surgery. I would like to know of anyone that has had this same thing done and how much weight did you lose
  4. If I am reading this correctly and the first clinic had full authorization for surgery, then I would just talk with your insurance and the new clinic to get it transferred. My wife and I had surgery in November but used our 6 month programs from almost 2 years prior (our insurance allowed that). I wouldn't vastly alter your diet unless they specifically give you a date. You can work on reducing your intake of food below what your body needs to maintain weight and you would still lose weight. So you shouldn't have to make any drastic changes. Increasing your water is definitely a good idea as well as it will help prepare you for after surgery and keeping hydrated.

    February 2021 Sleeve Surgery

Feb. 3 after being postponed from November due to COVID. Liquid diet starts Wednesday and I keep flip-flopping between being emotional/crying to absolutely psyched and ready! (I'm a LOT of fun to live with right now, lol)

Day surgery and February 2 surgery date!

Mine is Feb 3 after being postponed in November due to COVID. Starting the liquid diet Wednesday. I was in a really great headspace in November, but not doing as great after losing momentum. I hope your surgery goes great and that you have support at home!
  7. Hello all, I have been out of surgery for about 6 hours, and I am just trying to navigate everything. Most of what they told me at the hospital was when I was too drugged up to comprehend it all. Firstly, I have been sleeping all day, but getting up to walk every 2 hours. How long do these mini walks to avoid blood clots need to last? Is it okay for me to continue sleeping while doing this until I am not tired anymore? I hardly got any sleep last night, because my brain was all over the place. I have also been almost vomiting, which just ends up being a burp. I can't really control it. Is that okay at this point? I am terrified of damaging anything. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

I had hunger and cravings early on with my bypass, but the restriction and religiously following the protein first mantra prevented me from indulging. The physical hunger is unpleasant now with a shaky, nauseous, generally yucky feeling. Head hunger is real and annoying. I mostly choose to not listen to the head hunger. 🤷‍♀️ If you follow the protein first rule, it is almost impossible not to be in ketosis at first. As soon as I had room I added in some carbs though (mostly fruit), as I did not want to stay in ketosis. I can’t stand the body odor when I am in ketosis 😂 I exercise a lot and lost 100% of my excess body weight in just over 6 months. I am in what I will label as the vanity phase, as I work towards my chosen goal of 150 pounds. Ultimately, I actually want to get to 135-ish so I have a little cushion for bounce back. I chose bypass due to a 15 year history of GERD. My surgeon generally pushes for sleeve, but agreed with my desire for bypass due to GERD. I think either surgery would have been effective, but I did not want to have a revision if my GERD got worse. I hope some of that helps. 😊
  9. Hi 🙋‍♀️ - I have hypothyroidism and had the RNY bypass in October 2020. It definitely contributed to my decision to get the surgery as it made it so much more difficult to lose weight by dieting. How's it going since getting surgery? My weight loss has been steady, but not quick!

    Anyone for September 2020?

Revision from sleeve to bypass due to severe GERD and lack of weight loss was 9/19. I'm down almost 74 from the start of the process and almost 50 from the date of the revision. Still having trouble with a bunch of foods, but I otherwise feel great! No GERD since revision to bypass, which is totally wild to me considering I had horrible GERD from the moment I woke up from sleeve surgery.

Loose Skin? Lap Band Success Stories?

I echo the advice of those above: do your research on a different type of WLS other than the lapband. Even if you find a surgeon to place yours, there are fewer and fewer surgeons and fill/unfill facilities so if you have issues down the line, you may not find someone with the background and experience to help you out. Lapbands were a big trend years ago but are seen as arcane now. Today's trend is the Sleeve...this also may one day go the way of the band. The Gold Standard is the Bypass which has decades of data supporting its efficacy. (It is also reversible if needed.) With that said, I have had a band in place for almost 8 years. I'm one of its rare success stories with no issues. While I never made it to goal (my starting weight was similar to yours), I'm at a weight that is fine for me. No significant regains really, but when I do start climbing back up the scale, I know what to cut out. Not sure if I still have restriction/hunger dimmed by my band....I do a lot of the maintenance work myself. I had loose skin but I'm much older than you. It wasn't due to "quick" weight loss---my weight came off at the same rate as a traditional diet such as WW. It was just from having been obese. So two years ago, at age 60, I had a tummy tuck. It was absolutely life-changing. Best thing I ever did for myself. Not only do I love my tummy for the first time in my life, but having had plastics ensures that I keep my weight off and keep exercising....I would never want to ruin the results of the tummy tuck. Here's a photo of my tummy now---90% of this is the tummy tuck, 10% of it is my core work that I do every day to keep everything strong and toned. Sorry this photo is so large....something happens when I upload photos to this site. Normally it is much smaller! Good luck as you move forward but please: do your research, talk to other WLS patients to see their experience with the different surgeries out there.

    High fats

I do low fat to no fat, because too much fat in my diet upsets my stomach. I had a different surgery though, but it's the malabsorption imo that causes the issue and gastric bypass also has malabsorption so... I'd just be careful.

    Setting Weight Loss Goals

My current goal is to lose 4 pounds a month. I only lost 3 pounds in December though (I did lose 7 in November so I guess it evens out), and so far I've only lost 2 pounds this month (though I did just get over a 19 day stall so... I'll take the 2 pounds lol), but I'm also only 21 pounds to my personal goal weight and I heard that the last 25 pounds is a pain in the ass to get off. I agree about that lol. I'm sooooo close to being in Onederland and it's driving me nuts! Anyway, the weight comes off the easiest the first three months, then the following three month it's still pretty good and then it slows. How much weight you lose each month depends on your body type, age, metabolism, and any number of things. Don't compare yourself to others because everyone loses at a different rate so don't think your surgery is defective if you're a slow loser. I, myself, am a slow loser, but I've still lost 120 pounds since my surgery (on the nose lol. I was 321 on the day of my surgery and I'm 201 right now). You can probably find something somewhere which will give you the average loss for VSG and you can always try and set around that, but personally it's better to come up with a realistic goal on your own that you'd be happy with. I set my goals on what would make me happy. My surgeon's office wants me to try to get to 165, but my PCP thinks that for my body type it wouldn't be a good idea and she's much happier with my own personal goal of 180. She said that she likes my goal far better.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

First of all I just wanna say congratulations on your success! All of the points you gave on why you chose to go with the sleeve sounds a lot like me which is why I know my Dr. Is gonna push for the sleeve lol. And im less afraid to go with that too. I'm afraid of dumping syndrome, of meds and vitamins not being absorbed enough, or having my intestines rerouted. Etc. The only thing that bothers me is why the statistics say the sleevers lose 60-70% excess weight and bypass lose more. I'm asking from a completely objective standpoint - if both surgeries are just as easy to fail as they are to succeed, why do the research charts show this difference? Also, I wanted to ask, did you get to choose the size boujie you wanted for your sleeve or know what size Dr used for you?? Also, did you cravings and hunger completely return after 6 months or it does but slightly? Lastly, can you just do complete keto during the first year after surgery so you stay under 20 net carbs and in ketosis? Or our body doesn't need to be in fat burning mode because of the surgery? 15. Good to know I'm not the only hypothyroid person on here. Was that the major reason for getting sleeved/ bypass surgery?
  16. I'm sorry to hear that. I drank a tall glass of water yesterday and woke up feeling okay. I was terrified I would vomit. I think getting liquids in is more important than even food at this stage. What are you drinking? I need to up my nausea meds because they are useless right now. I really hope this is not the new normal. Did your surgeon tell you that a bypass is better?
  17. I just had my Gastric Bypass on Jan 12th, and my Dr. started me on ready-to-drink protein shakes in the hospital. They had the brand "Oh Yeah" in vanilla. I loved them. I got home spent $65 on the only web-site I could find them in stock, and I received them this morning the 17th. They taste terrible to me!! I had been trying to drink the Fairlife with 24grams of protein, but could barely get them down. Well, now that the "Oh Yeah" are here they taste terrible??? What is wrong with me? I feel like I just don't know what to do. I can't afford to waste money like that and now I feel like I have to drink them, but they aren't setteling on my stomach like they were, and the taste? I just don't know what to think. Any advise please, I would be so greatful. Thanks Rhonda

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Wait, you mean to tell me most people who start at 300 don't reach at BMI under 30??? 10-15% only??? Thats not what I'm seeing across these boards, both surgeries people losing most if not all their weight , including my friend who had bypass 10 years ago she was 450 lbs, still having trouble putting back on weight since hes only 70 lbs now, but on here and on YouTube I see most people reach their goal with the surgeries...to me its a matter of keeping it off , and I wanted the bypass because it's easier to lose 20-30 lbs more than ur goal weight so that when u regain a few, you stop at your goal weight. Due to the malabsoprtion qualities it's easier to lose passed your goal weight in that first year so I wanna take advantage of that first year but I can't get malabsorption due to the meds I'm not willing to stop forever Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

have you considered the Duodenal Switch? It is a sleeve in conjunction with intestinal bypass for malabsorption. not a lot of surgeons do it routinely, but I have been very pleased with my results this far (3 months out) and research shows that weight loss retention is most successful with this surgery.

    Doc gave me 2 options

I have not had a drink yet, but people in my support group say a few things about it: you get drunk really fast and it goes through your system quickly, so it is easy to have a lot of alcohol in one night and not in a good way (when the effects wear off so quickly). They also say it is an easy addiction transfer with bypass. Lastly, some dump with alcohol. Everyone recommends trying it at home at a non-event so that you can see how it hits you. But you might not be able to drink again. I wouldn’t anyway if GERD was an issue.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

The bypass and sleeve are very similar. I’ve seen you comment about people who’ve gotten back their weight, but my girlfriend and her mom did the sleeve 5 years ago and they have kept all their weight off. I have friends who’ve done the sleeve 2-3 years backs and they are still in great shape(no weight gain after 2-3 years). People who gain weight years after are people who start eating unhealthy and don’t follow the plan their Bariatric team has given them. My friend was 298 and in 9 months lost 150 pounds. She exercised and followed her diet. Simple. What is this myth you talk about? 18 month window? You’re always going to keep losing until you start eating to maintain your ideal weight. There is no window that magically stops you from losing. Who is giving you this information?

    Iron deficiency

I was very anemic pre-bypass surgery (low serum Ferratin, iron, hemoglobin and hematocrit). I later found out that anemia is one of the first signs of gastritis, esophagitis and GERD, which is why I had the bypass. My doctor told me to take two 65 mg tables of Iron (Ferrous Sulfate) for 3 months then repeated my labs. After 3 months, my ferratin was normal, but total iron was high, so I went back to just one 65 mg tablet per day. That is what my surgeon recommended post bypass as well. My surgeon does the first set of lab tests 5 months after surgery. I'm scheduled to get labs done in March, so I'm hoping to be in the "normal" range for all the vitamins and minerals that he checks for to rule out malabsorption. From what I've read, very few RNY patients end up with malabsorption, as long as they take the recommended supplements - which for me is one multivitamin, 2 calcium chews and on 65 mg iron pill. I get the B vitamins from the multivitamin, so I'm not taking any B-12 supplements.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

So this pretty much sucks...I was informed that the gastric bypass for me is out of question since I'm on ADHD meds, specifically Vyvanse which is an extended release and there's no alternative that works as good as vyvanse so my only option now is the sleeve. I'm worried I won't drop 100% of my excess weight since you only have a 18 month window to drop it all and I have 150 lbs to lose [emoji45] Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I has HH repair at same time as bypass, No issues and glad it got done all at the same time. I did have an ulcer later on, but that was not related to the HH
  25. I had hiatal hernia repair with my bypass. I would get cramping after eating and sometimes vomit. This happened with decreasing frequency for about the first 2-3 months post-op. My surgeon’s office thought it was related to the hernia repair. I still get nauseous sometimes if I eat too much, too fast, but haven’t had the cramping/vomiting thing in 4-5 months. Congrats on your spectacular weight loss so far! I hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly. 😊
