    Decision Time

Hi, I was kind of in the same situation. I have 100 lbs to lose and I am only 26. My doctor said the Vertical Sleeve would be better but Tricare doesn't cover it. He said that There's a point when the lapbanders get "stuck" and stop losing weight as they used to lose in the beginning. I don't know if that's true or not. He also said Gastric bypass could be a better option than the band but I have met a few people that after losing ALL the extra weight, they gained it back, and that scares me! So I politely said no and that my only interest was the band. Because, worse case scenario, if something goes wrong at least they can remove the band and that's it. Taking a portion of your stomach or "re-tubing" it it's more invasive and there's more room for a mistake and if in the future you want it reverse, you can't. It's a personal choice, do your research and do whatever you think will be better for yourself. Doctors are wrong sometimes, your inner voice is never wrong
  2. Hi there new to here. I am 2 weeks post sleeve op. I had a few problems but they seem to be getting better. I have read numerous conversations on here that say basically the sleeve is a waste of tim and bypass is the way to go. Has anyone had success with sleeve and found it a good choice? Hope I didnt make the wrong choice.
  3. Sorry for all you're going through. Just wanted to say I am 3 months post gastric bypass and at 3 weeks out we discovered I have an anastomatic stricture and marginal ulcers. I understand how it feels to not be able to tolerate even liquids. I have had 4 endoscopies with dilation, with a 5th one next week. I'm still on liquids but feel better. Take care, and I hope you get better soon. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. I finally received a surgery date. The doctor here is so busy he is already booking into July. So my pre-op is July 10 and my surgery is July 24. They say I'll go home that day. I also have to do a 2 week liquid diet prior, with clear liquids the day before. Oh well, going to have to buckle down and do it. I think I can do this. I've never been on an all liquid diet before or any type of fast. In a book that I read on bariatric surgery(mainly gastric-bypass) the womans motto was "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels." That may be mine too. Just one day at a time. I can't wait to know that every summer, I can wear the shorts that I wore last year, that is unless there too big. I have never been able to wear the same summer or fall shorts/pants from season to season. :cursing:I have 5 sizes of shorts (all denim) that I have saved for the last 15 years. Just hoping that someday, I could wear them again. And now that time is finally arriving. Yaay me!!!:smile2:My surgery is scheduled exactly 1 year and 1 day after my first consultation. July seems like a long way away, but it'll probably fly by. Just thought I would share. Susan
  5. Hi, I'm new here. I joined this forum with the expectation that my surgery was going to be about 10 months from now. I went to the surgeon today and I'm looking at two to three months from now. Which yay?!? I don't have to think about the what if's as long, but now I'm overly anxious about "holy crap, it's so soon I don't have time to prepare". I'm having the bypass which is what I went into the appointment expecting him to say I would need. I'm just nervous and jumping in head first reading all the posts. Thanks for sharing your stories, I didn't want to read them while being a creeper and not sharing mine.
  6. I had Gastric Bypass Sept 2016. Started at around 330lb and was able to lose and roughly maintain 100lb weightloss. I also have Hypothyroidism, with new diagnosis of Hashimoto's, and PCOS. My weight has increased MAJORLY since having a Pannilectomy in November 2021. I've tried lowering calories even more, upping protein, engaging in more activity, weightloss medication to suppress appetite. Anything and everything I could think. Ended up consulting with my weight management doctor and we proceeded with a Partial Gastrectomy sinxlce they said there was a TINY sliver of stomach that they could still remove to maintain the pouch integrity. They confirmed my pouch was not stretched. So I had the Partial Gastrectomy on Monday. I didnt have any pain, just mild discomfort due to the laproscopic incisions. My stomach feels absolutely fine. I've not needed any pain medication outside of Tylenol. I've also been put back on the post-op diet. With all that being said... I feel suspicious of my lack of internal discomfort. My ability to handle 2 to 4 oz of fluids with absolute ease. More so that I am STILL getting hunger pains. It truly almost feels like they got in there and decided to not remove anything. My husband said that the status of "Moved to the OR", "Surgery in Progress", and "Moved to Recovery" was 25 to 30 minutes. This is supported by the board they post on and the texts. Just dont know if I am being crazy or not. Is this normal??? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Had my bypass three weeks ago (presume you’re having bypass too) just prepare yourself for the mental roller coaster and remember why you’re doing it. (Most) people don’t feel much or any real pain, just some discomfort. I struggled mentally but am working through the mental aspect of it all. Best of luck, private message if you like anytime.
  8. Hi I am still in the approval process for the surgery. I have so many questions about the bypass surgery. I have read so many horror stories. Like the "dumping", nausea, diarrhea....Can a person even leave the house in case these things might happen? How expensive are the supplements, vitamins, etc? Where is the best place to get your protein shakes, etc.? Can you still take your current medications, even if they are large pills? How many nights were you in the hospital? Can you get dehydrated easily? Can you lose too much weight? Lots of questions, please put up with me. Hope to hear from someone soon. Thank you.
  9. Hey all! I’m 5 weeks post op and have been doing great, but I got my teeth cleaned yesterday and haven’t been feeling well since. Usually the dentist is an easy thing for me but this time my body aches and my digestive system is definitely unhappy. My pre-op info did not say anything about the dentist. Has anyone else had experiences like this? Did your info have a timeline for dental cleanings? Thanks, Breanne
  10. I’m having so many mixed thoughts swirling around my head. I hesitate to post this today. I am grateful for having gastric bypass to have the tool to combat metabolic disorders and inability to exercise due to disability (post exertional malaise) and I was at the point it was all or nothing. All my fight was getting me nowhere fast. I know I’ve come a long way, I’ve also paid a hefty price physically and am still dealing with many health challenges. But I also know my body could not carry the burden of all that weight. And I will do everything in my power to maintain the weight loss. i reached goal Sometime last month. I overshot it a little. Although based on my height of 5’ I’m within my goal range. I haven’t been actively trying to lose for a few weeks. I raised my calories somewhat but not drastically. I started out at 208lbs with a BMI of 40.6 and today am 102.4 and a BMI of 20. its Funny though, I write my weight on a calendar daily, and write Daily log of my weight, meals, calories and protein to Track and plan what I will eat the best I can based on what’s available in the fridge, freezer, pantry. I haven’t given solid thought to my progress, I’ve just taken it one moment at a time. My weight fluctuates slightly and that’s ok. Other things weigh on my mind though. I hesitate to call it a celebration when even my birthday this month went unmentioned and Covid-19 will be around for the foreseeable future. It’s not impacted my odd daily routines of living with lifelong chronic illness and disability. I’m homebound much of the time as is. It’s risky going to get groceries but a necessity. But It’s had more of an impact on healthcare. i Had an early one year follow up with my surgeon February 11 and discussed continuing severe pain and spasms in left side under ribs along with other symptoms along with my history of ulcers in the remnant stomach and small intestine, they said I needed a double balloon enteroscopy. But I had to see a different doctor for the test. I couldn’t get an appointment until March 12 to see that doctor, I asked if they could schedule the test since it takes a while but no I had to wait to see the doctor first, who of course ordered the test. Which was then scheduled for April 27. And what happened, of course no one called until the last minute and it was then canceled indefinitely. And I’m left in pain, I sent them a message and they tell me I could go to the ER to be evaluated. First of all how is that a good idea? And evaluated for what? That’s why I saw the doctor and he ordered the test (actually both doctors did) I’m at a loss as to what to do and meanwhile I’m just trying to move ahead. i don’t even want to discuss this. I’ve other health issues that I’ve been waiting months to deal with. My doctor gives me attitude. Even things are obviously a problem. I saw my general doctor February after waiting a few weeks. I had sudden severe pain just lightly touching the front of my throat. I had a thyroid ultrasound. I also saw an endocrinologist. I was supposed to go to the hospital for further tests. But this was cancelled indefinitely. I’ve also been having nosebleeds and I don’t know why ... but it’s all been put on hold and none of the doctors care to follow up. I have been making plans about having skin removal surgery. Since it’s the only thing I can manage to do right now. The excess sagging skin is very problematic especially my thighs. A thigh lift, and Having a Belt lipectomy/Butterfly lift to remove excess skin might also help benefit strengthening my core which I can’t do with exercise. I’ve been working on this with Hospital BC that is part of BariatricPal and they are so helpful in the process. I’m trying to think of it as a vacation in Mexico with benefits. I’ll need financing of course. I’m far away from rich. It’s a goal to have a body I haven’t as long as I can remember. I haven’t been this weight as long as I can remember either. I could never reach this goal on my own before even as hard as I tried with strict low carb and calorie counting. I only managed 124lbs and it didn’t stay there long. So taking that last step of getting rid of ugly sagging, rashy problematic skin feels like part of the journey to finish. A crazy thing in times like these. I’ll be pinching pennies as hard as I can. But part of me is determined. And also ... trying to ignore the rest. I had wanted to deal with the other health issues first but looks like that won’t happen so I’m going to try to roll with it and see what happens. maybe it’s dumb for me to write this. I don’t know anymore. I’m exhausted. But I think that I want others to know that if I can do this with my chronic illness and disability And despite how hard it has been for me ... that others can succeed and reach their weight loss goal.
  11. I did my Bypass in Montreal on 2015, we had an option to choose between sleeve or bypass! I asked my doctor's opinion on it and the doctor who did the surgery on me said base on my age 40, he said choose bypass! Reasons: he said sleeve is new( 7 years) and still doctors don't know in long term how the maintenance of weight loss is going to last! They are assuming that you may gain back easily with sleeve! On the other hand he said the bypass is done since 50 years ago and the doctors have a good understanding of it and is less risky! He said if I would be in my 60 s he would have suggested the sleeve cause the result is fast enough and in that age you don't really care in how many years there will be a risk to gain it back! I did the surgery for other health issues and was 209 lb before my pre surgery diet and on the surgery day was 199! It was way slower for me to lose and in 20 months I lost 42 lb! Today I weigh 157! They said that I lost over 75% of my extra weight which is really good but I still feel I need to lose another 17 lb! Which at this time after 20 months is really hard and slow! I am very happy with my choice and had no complications! Wish you luck and either way you won't regret your choice! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. Was wondering because I had dr Christou and he said virtually the same thing, verbatim about why he preferred bypass. Sleeve was my backup plan. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. @@BananaSplit Please please please don't gain to have the surgery. Exercise alone will not get you there. With a 30 BMI, you can do this! But 90% of weight loss comes from diet with exercise being a much smaller portion though still really important. If you have that good habit built you can begin to change your diet to get rid of this extra weight. Go speak with a nutritionist, they really really can help you. Moving toward a high Protein, good carb diet is the way to go. Learning about portion management is critical and lastly staying away from sugar, rice, potatoes, Pasta and bread also critical during weight loss. Here is the thing, if you had this surgery, you would have to change your lifestyle to the above in order for it to be successful long term. So, although I am very thankful for having bypass, if I could have done it withou surgery I would have. My BMI was well over 40 and I had almost every comorbitity. Gaining weight to get there will only do more damage to your body. I hope that you find the best solution for you, I am just saying having your insides cut out or rearranged when you are not morbidly obese seems like a risk you don't need to take. This is just my opinion. I wish you all the best!

    6 months post-op...reset to goal

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. It's totally understandable to get off track when you are grieving, but good for you for committing to getting back on track and reaching your goal. You have done great! You look so skinny. From that picture, you don't even look like you have 20 pounds to lose! Have you tried chelated iron? It is supposed to be better absorbed by gastric bypass patients, and also easier on the stomach and not cause constipation. I had iron deficiency before surgery, but I've been taking 36 mg of chelated iron per day (plus a multivitamin with 45 mg of ferrous fumarate) and my latest labs were great. This is the chelated iron I take: https://amazon.com/Nutricost-Chelated-Iron-Ferrochel-Capsules/dp/B0792MCYGW
  15. Hello everyone, I had my surgery 15 days ago and the healing process has been going well until I’ve started having these episodes of heartburn about 4 days ago. On Monday of week 2 (this past Monday), my doctor said I could eat soft proteins. I tried a few times through the week and they upset my stomach each time so I went back to full liquids on Thursday. Since then, I’ve been experiencing heartburn daily which only goes away for a few hours when I take a Pepcid tablet. I was also taking my multivitamin and calcium supplements in solid pill form while I wait for my dissolvable tablets to come in the mail. I asked if it was safe since they are somewhat large pills and my doctor said they were. However, I’m not planning on taking them tomorrow so I can try to figure out what is causing this heartburn. I spoke to a nurse (who I’d never spoken to before) at my doctor’s office who said heartburn is normal because I am still early in the healing process and to just keep taking my Pepcid. I am worried that she may have just wanted to get me off the phone and I’ll be calling again next week to reach someone who actually knows me. Sorry to be so long-winded. Has anyone else experienced heartburn this soon after gastric bypass and did it ever go away? I’m scared I’ll have to take antacids permanently. I haven’t had any nausea or vomiting on full liquids and when I did try the soft proteins, they went down fine, I just didn’t feel too well after which is why I went back to liquids. These bouts of heartburn are my only issue at the moment. ANY and all insight is appreciated!

    Pre-op question

I’m a previous lap-band patient gone haywire, thus causing it to be removed several years ago so I’m larger now than when I had it placed. I’m going to have surgery. Researching options and costs right now. How many of you would recommend the mini bypass? If so, why and is there a difference in percentage of weight lost and cost? I know that it has less chance of surgical complications. Thanks in advance.

    Insurance Request for Surgery...Huh? 4/6/10

So I logged in to see what's going on with my insurance claims & referrals today. I saw that there were four separate requests for surgeries rather than just one. So, do they have to spell out what they're asking for & cast a wide net by specifically requesting "bypass, v-band, rny, & LAP-BAND®"? Is that the way they do it? I really hope that's how it's s'posta go & one of 'em "sticks", although I really do not want one of the procedures that actually rearrange your guts - I just want my guts to be "belted" :scared2: As of a few minutes ago the status of all of 'em was "pending review". Crossing my fingers (and toes) that I'll get the thumbs-up...quickly! I hate the ups & downs of waiting, being hopeful, disappointed, frustrated, excited, etc. Guess I swapped out yo-yo dieting for yo-yo emotions Gotta *try* to stay positive & keep telling myself my new, healthy life *will* begin, and soon!
  19. First banded 2009, slipped, had a revision 3-25. Ever since surgery feeling sluggish tired .....new onset symptons are dizziness, light headed, when I'm standing up feeling like I'm about to pass out......Doc says might be that the band interfere with my vasageal. Has any one have this happen to them. Is it curable....please help

    Surgery 9/15

I just had my pre-op appointment with my Dr....they are moving sleeve patients to outpatient surgery, but there's a chance that my bypass will have to be rescheduled....I'm going to be so devastated!!!! I've even had 3 Covid shots!!!! Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I'm doing all the jumping through hoops for the insurance company before I can get a sleeve to RNY revision. Looks like tomorrow is the big day for you!!! Congratulations!
  22. Hello! I am also scheduled for 9/20. I am still awaiting approval though, which is super frustrating, but I am hoping this all works out. I am not getting bypass, but sleeve. Yes, it's been a long process, but I feel blessed for the opportunity and excited for the changes to come!
  23. Thank you. If I do end up getting a revision, I will tip toe into solid foods. Dumping does not sound like a good time!! I appreciate your response!

LapBand vs. Bypass & weight loss

I'm about 13 months out and I've lost between 50 and 55 lbs. I'm on the "slower" end of what they say should be average (1 to 2 lbs per week), but I'm lighter, and I wouldn't have been without the band, and I wouldn't have had the bypass done, so I'd say things are working, even if I do wish they were faster. Sounds like you are doing fine to me
