  1. ok...so i've been on here for a few years and have read the statement "i'm gaining weight and i don't know why", and an umpteen different variations of that same statement. the answer to this is to (honestly) track your food intake and weight over a period of time (and tracking your exercise habits, sleep habits, menstrual cycles is an added source of info). you will quickly figure out on the data collected where you can tweak things. and yes, I KNOW this is not for everyone. its not easy and it takes a certain level of crazy to keep this up for forever (*raISES hand* ... yep, im crazy). Now, if you are willing to make changes, then yay! if not, that is ok too! like i said, i've been on here for what seems like an eternity, and another thing that need to be addressed is that not everyone gets to their arbitrary goal weight, let alone stays there. often because this goal weight is not realistic to the efforts they are willing to put forward...wanna be 120lbs with 15% body fat? then be prepared to eat lean and exercise hours every day. forever. for most, this lifestyle is just not sustainable. and that is ok! quality of life is more important than a goal weight. if you lost weight then you won already. if you are off your meds and have energy and can move unhindered, then you won already. if you are angst free and living life, then you won already. BUT, if you WANT to lose more weight, get stronger, look better in that bikini, then go for it. start tracking your intake and be aware of how your inputs and outputs affect you, speak to a medical professional to see if there aren't any other issues that may be at play. adjust your diet and activity accordingly. and again, if that is just not your bag, thats ok...you just need to learn to accept your present and be cool with it. peace, people! p.s. and as GT expressed above, use whatever resources you have available to you (if you so desire), including meds!

    same! first day of puree stage i pureed some beef and barfed a little in my mouth at the result. tossed it and just extended my "full fluids" stage another week then went to afterwards "soft foods"
  3. ALWAYS. i have more of a "food ordering" addiction than an actual food-EATING one. it reached a point long ago that Mr. will UNDER-order cuz he knows he will end up eating mine. WIN-WIN, in my opinion!

    TBH the smell and look of puree made me puke. I skipped it all together. I bought Heinz soups and seived the bits out. I had to go back to the last stage a few times. It gets easier when you can feel your restriction. Before that I had to rely on a runny nose or a sneeze to tell me I was full. This really is the hardest stage to master because its all new and we are so frightened to get it wrong. This forum helped me loads in this stage

    Some other advice I was given was to only try new foods at home and try them one at a time so that if you do have an issue, you know exactly what caused it. Sometimes it’s not about texture at all. Some people just have issues with certain foods that can last a while. I think eggs is a pretty common one. And for future reference (when you back to normal food) lettuce is another one that tends to give people issues. The chopped lettuce is a little better. It actually is the food that gives some people issues who didn’t have surgery. The chopped lettuce is way easier on our digestive systems. I saved steak and lettuce for last.

    I was definitely allowed tuna and egg salad on the purée stage BUT, I did not have those until near the end of the stage. Think about it as a continuum and think of all the stages between liquid and purée that they did not name. You have however, long you’re on purée phase to slowly work your way up to the thicker purées. So if the blended tuna does not go well, then try some thinner. 2 ounces doesn’t go well then try one ounce. I did at the opposite way and tried the 1 ounce really thin to start and then worked my way up instead of trying and going back. Honestly, honestly, after experiencing what you had, I would probably try one bite and wait a while but it’s up to you as long as you’re within your recommendations. Also, there were foods to avoid until way down the road such as fibrous veggies or fruits with seeds or stringy things like oranges. can’t remember all the others maybe other people will chime in if your boo didn’t give you the guidance I mean, they are puréed. They are not advised.

    I've definitely been puréeing the tuna so it's the right texture, but I think you all might be right about the portion size itself. I got handed a leaflet about what to eat post op, but they don't actually suggest any food ideas with measurements until the solid phase. I do ok on 4oz of liquid, but I think I will try half of that for purée and see how I get on. I'm trying not to be in a hurry to move on to the next stage, but I'm really miserable at this stage.

    Pureed /Soft food Ideas

    I went the route of slow cooked soups with meats & vegetables & stews/ casseroles. Slow cooked so the meat was ‘fall off the bone’ tender. Also ate a lot of minced meat dishes especially mince bolognese & rissoles (meat balls). Also I had a separate purée stage then followed by soft food. Go slowly and see how you go. You may find a few days of purée first easy on your tummy then jumping straight into the more solid soft food.

    I think it may be too much volume too. I was advised 1/4 - 1/3 of a cup from purée. Also try thinning the purée more so it’s more liquid like for a coupe of days & see if that helps. But yes, going back to liquids for a couple of days or so won’t hurt either. Maybe try one meal puree, the other two liquids? I found tinned fish pureed disgusting and survived a lot on thicker soups & yoghurt. Luckily I could have thin scrambled eggs and thin instant oatmeal as well.

    I never did puree because the idea of eating blended food was just BLECH. I went from liquids to soft, mushed foods. So I did liquids for 2 weeks, then I did soft, mushy foods for 3 weeks. I ate things like creamy soup, refried beans, mashed potatoes, avocado spread, hummus, yogurt, mashed black beans, and then the 3rd week I ate tuna, cottage cheese, SUPER steamed veggies, etc... But I only ate about 2 to 2 1/2 oz each time because there was NO WAY I could eat more.

    October 2024 Surgery Buddies

    Congrats on the weight loss so far. I'm 4 days post op from roux en y and haven't lost a pound. I'm sticking to the full liquid diet because I want my stomach to heal correctly. Doc put me on full Liquids the day after my surgery. I have little to zero pain. But I feel bloated. My doc told me advance to the next step of pureed food in 3 weeks. I just want to eat a good salad! But I'm waiting.

    When I had Tuna for the first time, it was in my soft food stage and it was heavy to eat. In puree, I stuck with cottage cheese, creamy soups, yogurt, mashed beans, and "ricotta bake". I would say try puree, but nix the tuna for now. I wasn't eating more than a 1/4 cup at a time.

    Yea 4 oz is a bit much to start. I believe my guidance was 2oz to being puree stage. My team allowed me to eat more often but some programs frown upon that. Maybe ask about that at your follow up and just do even smaller portions to start.

    Thanks! I've been blending tuna and yohurt so it's about yoghurt consistency, but I wonder if purees weigh more. 4oz of liquid is fine, 4oz of puree is too much. I might try the guidance of 8 small mouthfuls. I have a small spoon that is smaller than a normal teaspoon so I will try that.
  16. I didn’t have band either, but I had the sleeve and gained it all back. My surgeon explained that obesity is very complex and for many people the sleeve is great and it’s less risk so they go with it when they think it is appropriate but it does not offer the same metabolic changes as the bypass or the SADI (which is what I revised to) that some people need in order to be successful. I believe the Lap band offers even less metabolic changes than the sleeve, if any. Basically with these surgeries mostly everyone will lose weight, it’s the keeping it off part that’s difficult. And that’s when you need a surgery with enough of a metabolic change to help you long term. I am 2.5 months out from my revision and I was so worried about the same thing, losing it only to regain again but I can already tell that there is more or a metabolic change. I mean I am exercising!! Me….everyday!! That never would’ve happened without this surgery. Healthy foods taste better and my mood has improved. I have tons of energy and motivation. I never got that with the sleeve. The bypass has been around for a very long time for good reason. For me the sleeve and SADI difference has been night and day. I think you will find a similar experience with your Bypass.

    I wouldn't worry too much about if you have done any damage - I highly doubt you have! Especially if you have been following the recommendations of your surgical team. It is a little bit of hit and miss learning in the early stages - what feels good, what doesn't etc. If you think a puree is too thick, just thin it out a little bit and then gradually increase! For example, I'd have yogurts but just thin it out with milk. My surgeon literally recommended that I have a week on each stage, so that just goes to show you that the gap can be quite small! So long as you aren't in any severe or prolonged pain, I think you should be okay! Always reach out to your surgical team if you are worried though
  18. I'm just over two weeks post op. I was cleared for the pureed stage of foods, so I've been eating pureed foods since Monday. But no matter what I do, it just sits too heavy in my stomach. I feel too full despite eating the same volume as I did with liquids. There was a meal or two where I felt ok, but mostly too full. So I'm going back to liquids. Have I damaged anything by eating purees too soon? Have I set myself too far back in my recovery?
  19. Most of the people on here have said it. I do cook most of my food now, hence the name. I think I’m weird because I like to food prep. I weigh myself at least once a week or check how my jeans fit. Then jump back on track (if I’ve wandered) by weighing food, measuring, recording and checking in with my son or a friend to hold myself accountable. I stay in touch with my bariatric group of fellow WLS patients because it’s good positive energy from people working hard to maintain weight loss. I pop on here too, again nice positive energy from folks trying to be supportive and helpful staying healthy!

    5 years out not losing weight

    Lots of people have posted about food, so I’ll tell you my behavior changes I make. I measure my protein on a scale. My personal dietitian told me 4oz protein per meal, or diabetic protein count 20grams. I record it either online in a phone app, or write it down. I can eat as much raw veggies or baked, or steamed veggies as I like, but only at meals with protein. No root vegetables due to sugar content. I drink 2litters of water, sometimes more during the day. I take my vitamins daily. Three meals look like that, then I’m back on track. If I’m hungry, one boiled egg before bed. That’s what the dietitian told my 5’10 son too. When we really want results we share and compare information to hold each other accountable, including weighing in on the scale. I watch the glucose goddess online for tips and recipes, and Dr. Weiner. In maintenance the fruit, nuts, seeds, cheese can come in one once quantities- those are “extras.” Alcohol is only for maintenance, just major holidays. Recap; weigh/ measure food, record it, share with a trusted friend or family to keep yourself accountable. Your dietitian should be telling you what a portion of protein is for you specifically.
  21. Just echoing what the two very experienced forum members say above. A regain in 2nd and 3rd year post op is almost the norm. Please try not to worry about it unduly. Your set point is the weight/body composition that your body wants to hover around. The video below is short and might help. Your set point gets lowered drastically by WLS. But - processed food raises it. Eating cleaner keeps it lower. Building muscle mass keeps it lower. Might those be things you can work on a bit? Lots of people focus on cardio and that's brilliant, but lifting weights or using resistance bands (even if you never do cardio!) can add another really significant layer to that. Do you or have you ever tracked your intake? If that has slipped just tracking again might make you aware of what you're taking in and what you're using up. I am saying this as someone just about 3 years post op who regained 16lbs this year. I personally wasn't happy with that because it didn't stop as others' seems to, so I lost 10lbs by strict keto and am now back where I want to be. I had dietary lapses I needed to correct too and am working on that. I had this surgery to stop dieting - I feel like I can tweak things to keep me where I want to be without that and that I've learned a lot by stepping back and really analysing my intake the last few months. Also huge kudos to you for thinking about this with only 9lbs on. Much easier to look at what you can change now, if you even need to do that, rather than further down the line.     stalling just 1 week post op

    I was the same way. I had my surgery at the end of August and even still I am slow to lose weight; I thought it would just "melt" off after surgery because of how few calories I was intaking, so it has been frustrating. I'm trying to trust the process and follow my food plans, but I think the point is that everyone loses differently and we can't help which camp we are in.

  24. I am a baby in my journey 10months today actually, but I reached my goal weight at 6months and I creeped down a touch more for about another month. I have maintained +/- 3lbs for the past 3ish months. I track every single day (eating 1700-2000cal a day), I prioritize protein (hit 150-200g a day) although lately its more like 225g of protein and that is WAY too much my stomach hurts lol so I am adjusting, keeping fat low (under 90) keeping carbs under 200g. I lift heavy (3 days lower and 2 days) along with cardio (running, incline walks, stair master), then 1 day where I do 40min HIIT work out then 30min of cardio. I have 1 rest day. I meal prep every week so all my meals M-F from pre-workout snack down to my last snack before dinner is prepped and tracked. I know what's for dinner every day as I make sure to plan for those. All the food I make is now lower in fat, higher in protein and the family doesn't even notice! Weekends I "indulge" I still track but notice I do not eat as much those days. I eat protein ice cream using my Ninja Creami or sneak in a few bites of my hubby's Ben and Jerrys. I do eat chips, fries, lettuce wrapped burgers, fried chicken **gasp!!** very small amounts but I do not deprive myself. This is a LIFESTYLE change not a diet. So I wanna go buck wild and get back to where I was but I also don't want to be a bird and never enjoy all the yummy treats. MODERATION IS KEY!! Eat healthy 85-90% and stay active, you won't have any issues!

    It sounds like the big takeaway is that you are overall doing really well. I think you can easily make the food switches. Sorry about the counselor, but maybe an external counselor will be better because you can pick some one that you like and fits you.
