    Awful complications

So sorry you have not been feeling well. Everyone's body responds differently to this procedure. I was the exception to the rule in many regards. No ansaid usage, chewed until I was tired of chewing, drank constantly, either appropriate shakes for the benefit of the protein as well as getting the liqueds in. Side note: Premier shakes are not the type of shake that by-pass patients should be using. They are not the right kind of protein, as they are slow digesting shakes not Whey protein isolate. In other words when you drink them you are not getting the benefit of the 30 gram of protein. As far as ulcer at the staple site this is a very common result of the surgery and mine were quite severe where I was also throwing up blood. 3 EGD's later and months of protonix and Carafate with no benefit to the ulcers as well as non stop weight loss led to Gastric Bypass reversal.

    Please Help Me Decide ...

I would listen to your surgeon. I never even considered the band because I known a few people in the family one had a few slips and they both gained some of the weight back. Then I come on here and see so many revisions .

    Help!

Regarding exercise...whether you have the band or bypass, exercise should be incorporated into your lifestyle. You can do other things besides walk...swim, bike (recumbant) yoga, etc. Personally, I thought the slower weightloss was better for me. I'm almost a year into this and down 53 pounds. It came off fast at first and then slowed. I need another fill but am waiting until after the holidays just so I won't have problems like getting stuck, etc. My weightloss has slowed mostly due to lack of exercise and not always eating properly. Good luck with whichever you decide.
  4. Hi all, tomorrow I will be one week out from my bypass. My recovery has been a bit bumpy, I spent about 24 hours over the weekend puking (I don't know where it all came from!) and in pretty severe gas type pain. That calmed down, and know I'm just trying to increase clear fluids, and not worry about protein. It was scary and painful and I don't want to overdo it again! It's kinda weird thinking I've had virtual no calories for a week, but since I'm able to use the bathroom and everything seems normal there, I'm just going to press on and hope for more each day. Anyhow, my surgeon closes incisions with staples, and I'm scheduled to have them removed this week. While I'm looking forward to having them out because I think they are gross, I'm honestly super nervous! I've never had staples out. Could anyone share their experience or insight on what to expect?

    Any April surgeries.

Kim- My surgeon does not require a prep diet but I am copying what some are doing. Two Protein shakes and dinner of a protein and veggies. It makes sense to me to start prior to the surgery so the transition after surgery is not so abrupt. How is is going for you? My surgery is on Thursday and I am very anxious because it will not know until after I wake from it if they were able to do the bypass. I will have the band out for sure but if the tissue does not look good the bypass will not be done. My insurance has very limited life time coverage for bariatric surgery so if the bypass is not able to be done, I will not have it done for a very long time as I will have to self pay. This is adding another layer of anxiety for me. Jennie

    Upper GI tomorrow

I had a barium swallow every year after my sleeve to check if it was stretched. I guess I was paranoid lol. Now after the revision, I haven't done that. But it is fast, you drink chalky stuff, they watch it go down. I always asked for a picture to compare year to year. No sedation, can Uber that no problem but ... For the surgery, not allowed to do Uber, at least here I couldn't.
  7. Brenda, how are you feeling now? Are you starting to get your strength back a little bit? Hope the pain and sinus drainage is letting up. Did you stay overnight at the hospital w/this revision surgery? Take care.
  8. I am having mine on the 26th as well and I am having the bypass surgery. I am on the 4th day of the liquid fast. I am doing well I think.

    Fears

I have that fear, it's my second biggest fear (first being surgical complications). Also, of everyone I've known to have bypass personally, none have lost significant weight. I understand ita how you work it that determines success. And I don't know these people so intimately that I could say if it's their fault or the surgery.... How I cope... I go in my hole and do me. I focus on what the doc/nut set for me and forget everyone else's progress, comments and suggestions. I work based on the truths I know about what's good for me and my body.
  10. Hello. My first doctor visit and education class is next week. I expect my gastric bypass surgery to be six months from now. I did a good amount of research before making my decision, and I am eager to start my journey. I know I will have questions answered next week, but am eager for answers now. My biggest fear is my BMI is close to being too low, however, I have many weight related health issue (D2, HBP, and High cholesterol). I am hoping to be able to diet a bit before surgery. Anyone in a similar situation?

    having second thought....

Well, I made my decision after a lot of reading and soul searching. I decided to do the bypass. I didn't make this decision because of my online friends. I know it's more drastic than the band, but I really think that I'll be more successful with it. I did research on the sleeve, but my insurance doesn't cover it, so that's a closed door. Thanks for all of your oppinions and advice, I do appreciate it very much! Sincerely, Susi

    having second thought....

I have only been banded 11 weeks. I have already lost 41 pounds and am thrilled with the results. I have had no negative side effects and do not feel any restriction yet. I have had to work very hard to get these results and basically am doing it on my own at this point but I have the psychological benefit of knowing that if I just stick with it, I will get restriction in the future and will have the assistance I need to maintain the weight loss. The decision on what type of surgery to get is a very personal one and I believe there are advantages and disadvantages to both. What it came down to for me was the risks. I had a surgeon tell me that the gastric bypass surgery was no more dangerous than an appendectomy. My response to him was that I did not know anyone who had died from an appendectomy, but I personally know or know of five different people who have died post gastric bypass. I thought about the gastric bypass for five years before I finally told my surgeon, I could not get past the fear. I wish I would have known about lapband five years ago and would not have wasted those five years. Good luck to you with your decision. Whichever you choose, give it your all.

Slippage from auto accident...I need to vent!

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry for what happened to you. Car accidents are horrible without complications like this, but this just makes it really terrible :-( It definitely would depend on your circumstance but I would revise to the sleeve. For me, dumping syndrome is just so unappealing that I wouldn't consider RNY. I really like my sweets and I want to be able to enjoy them (but normally, in normal portions as opposed to an ENTIRE cake or the WHOLE container of Ben and Jerry's) without having to run to the restroom every time. If I ever revise, I think I will revise to the sleeve (or plication, depending on how that procedure fairs). Sorry for your situation and good luck with your decision!
  14. I would say I am new here but I am actually not, when I had my band placed 2.5 years ago I was a member but I could not remember my username so this is my new profile. Something horrible happened, I was in an auto accident on Nov 01 and I suffered blunt trauma to my chest and abdomin. Immediately after the accident I was vomiting and had pain. Long story short after 6 weeks of dealing with Workmans Comp (I was driving on the job, running an errand) I finally got to see the right doctor and all the correct tests were done and not only did my band slip but I also have a hiatial hernia! I am just waiting on approval for surgery to fix this and I was left with several options with Dr. Joseph Naim... 1. Remove the band (NOT!) 2. Replace the band 3. Gastric Sleeve 4. Gastric Bypass Although the band has been good to me I am afraid of this happening again as this is a very miserable experience. I am leaning toward the sleeve...any thoughts? Dawn

    Please Help Me Decide ...

You are right that sleeve is considered major surgery and brings with it some additional risks, however, there are plenty or "horror stories" w lap-band as well. My surgeon, who admittedly was slow to adopt the sleeve, now says that he can only recommend the lap-band with serious reservations...he says what he likes about the sleeve is that his patients have great outcomes while saying it is easy to live with (the latter not being something that either bypass or lap-band patients tend to say)

    Please Help Me Decide ...

I'm waiting to be sleeved, but a good friend of mine was revised from the band to RNY because of complications. My surgeon does a lot of revisions and said he doesn't think the band will be around in 5 years. Who knows if that's true or not but on these boards, it seems like a lit of people are considering revision. Good luck to you in whatever you choose:)

    having second thought....

Thanks for all of your advice and encouragement. I do appreciate it very much, but (I'm not trying to be rude, really!) the last thing I need now is to hear/read about horror stories. I have read/heard many; and it's not a help to me at all. Please don't take me wrong if you told me about something that happened to someone else. I know that you are just trying to help. I am still wavering, one day going for the band, the next for the bypass. I am trying to be calm about this, and be reasonable about it, instead of stressing myself about it. I made an appointment with my surgeon to dicuss it with him, we'll see what he suggests. He himself has the band, so I know that he'll be more in support for it, than the bypass. But hopefully he'll also listen to my concerns, and respect my decision either way I go. I am doing a lot of researching and reading about both proceduree, and I feel that I have a good handle on the pros and cons. Now it just comes down to me. I know that my online WLS friends will also support me in whatever decision I make. I will post my decision when i am feeling confident about it. As for now, I thank you all for letting me vent here. It's good to have a place where I feel I can do it, without being judged. Sincerely, Susi

    A Little Discouraged....

Very good advice and wise words here. I started with over 200 pounds to lose. I originally was going to Gastric Bypass and at the last minute canceled. Logically I just couldn't rationalize cutting up and permanently changing a perfectly healthy organ without at least trying something less drastic first. So, I got the band. So far I've lost 92 pounds in just under 5 months. It's work, I've had to change my eating habits completely as well as learn how to eat with the band. But I have zero regrets and would recommend it to anyone willing to do the work necessary for success with the band.

    Star Jones....leaving "the view"

Star Jones was on Larry King for the whole hour tonight. He had talked to Barbara Walters and had statements from ABC. Star said that in her book she says that she had a medical intervention by her doctors, because of several conditions that were getting life-threatening. Though she never used the term "gastric bypass" or another form of WLS, she says that "surgery" is understood. She just wanted her privacy in the matter. AND she thinks it was a mistake not being more open about the weight loss surgery. ABC said they told Bill (show producer) and Barbara Walters in November 2005, that they wanted Star to go ASAP. Barbara got them to hold off, because it was the holiday season, and Star had a book coming out. Finally, in April, Barbara and Bill agreed that it was time. But Star learned the news that she was being dropped from her agent...not Bill or Barbara. The wedding situation was a little unclear. She had sponsors, but she said the View had her doing wedding segments. ABC was upset that she gave exclusive rights to the wedding photos to People and did not allow the View to show wedding photos. Star said that People didn't pay for the pictures.(..that doesn't ring true.) She did not explain why the photos were not shown on the View. She says she loves the ladies and feels that they are still her friends. However, Barbara told Larry that her own relationship with Star is torn beyond repair. (Honey, that bridge is burned). Star says she has a TV project in the works, but didn't describe it. I do believe that ended her 15 minutes this week.
  20. Trying to better understand the risks and complications associated with band/sleeve conversions. I understand from one doctor I spoke to that there's a greater risk with revisions. If you've had any complications, no matter how minor - or no complications, I'm looking to learn: how long did you have your band? did you have a lot of complications with your band previously - e.g. that's what would have led to lots of scaring, etc If you didn't have any excessive band complications, did your sleeve surgeon say you had a lot of scaring from the band? I think I"m just trying to get to whether or not there's a great chance of scaring if you've had your band longer (I've had mine for just over 5 years.
  21. My revision was 12/29/12. I was banded in march 2007, lost 70 lbs. had a baby in late 2010, and the band never worked after delivery. Imaging was "normal". I tried to get it working again but when it became obvious that it just wasn't, I pursued revision. After surgery, my surgeon told my the band had somehow become unclasped and was just loose. I believe this happened when I was in labor. I asked him about scarring, and he said all band revisions have scarring, some more than others. Mine wasn't terrible because the original surgeon didn't sew my stomach over my band. Anyway, my sleeve is working, and other than post op nausea I have had no troubles so far. Very minimal post op pain, never even filled my rx for oxycodone. I spent 1 night in the hospital. My revision was all in one surgery. Hope this helps, good luck!

Was your band placed too high?

agbardoe: When I had an upper GI after the endoscopy, my surgeon called me in that day for a slight unfill. I have felt much better. but as of today, I am changing doctors to a more experienced surgeon from a hospital of excellence.I went to see him for a second opinion first - before I decided to change. I don't believe my old doctor had the experience to deal with problems and complications. When you say the band hasn't been working for you - in what way? What kind of pain? From eating? Do you have reflux or heartburn? What does your doctor say about this? Have you had a recent upper GI? What caused you to gain 20 lbs? Anyway, before you make any changes - get answers to all your questions and concerns. If your insurance paid for the band you might need to be persistent to get a bypass if it is found that you have a severe complication from the band. Good luck.

    New!

Here I am, celebrated 45 years of marriage to my high school sweetheart on Saturday. Plan to retire December 31. Have fought weight all my life. Lowest weight 106 and highest 254. I am only 5 ft 2 in. Well, I am going to take the leap with Bariatric bypass as I have tried all other plans. I am 67 and looking to start my life over again with a new outlook on life. If I can, we all can. In God all things are possible[emoji33][emoji120]
  24. Welcome! My revision surgery is scheduled for 5/23 (my surgeon is doing both the removal and the sleeve the same day). So we will both be May Sleevers!! I can absolutely relate to what you said. I lost a total of 40 pounds with my lap band (but that is TOTAL, including the 17 I lost during the 2-week pre-op diet). For so long I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I had a lap-band, and I also avoided going back to my surgeon for an adjustment because I was ashamed that "I had failed". It wasn't until recently that I learned how many people experienced the very same results and then I began to realize that it was the band that failed - not me. You will do great! Keep us posted on how you're doing after your band is removed Monday. Wishing you a speedy recovery and look forward to moving onto the losers bench with you.
  25. My lap-band will be removed on 4/14 and my sleeve will be done on 5/19. The past couple of months have been quite the whirlwind for me!! My story: I had my band placed in Oct 2008 and lost 45 pounds during the first year . I have been able to maintain the weight loss mainly because the band made me bulimic - unless I ate slider foods. I did not go for a follow-up for almost 2 years because I knew I was not on track or following the program. I also had multiple ankle surgeries over 2011 & 2012 which put my band on the back burner) So in Jan 2014 I decided to go for a follow up just to make sure the band was not slipped etc.I had no issues other than the ability to eat anything of substance. That was on 1/30 and two months later here I am scheduled for band /sleeve revision. I had no intention of doing the sleeve when I went to see my dr ..I really did not even know what it was. But after a lot of research I have decided this is the path for me. I have been lurking on this forum for months, but decided to come forward because I wanted to thank everyone for posting their stories and taking the time to answer everyone's questions. This forum was an incredible resource for me !!
