Wrapping My Brain around this
Dibley Dawn replied to Dibley Dawn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes, we should get a group of us together...of course we'll have to wait a couple of months until we can eat solid food. either that or meet up at a Protein shake bar. -

Whoa! I'm hoping to get it done in 3 month time... Gives my job time to find coverage for my absence and me enough time to prepare for the new eating habits! I've been research hung my protein powders and vitamins... I have an Amazon cart full! Lol -
anxious, scared and doubting myself
general_antiope replied to dirich's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Shel, I had anxiety and anger when I lost 100 lbs. I would get unsolicited attention from men and would be so angry I would cry. I felt invaded and powerless - all cause someone whistled at me. It did go away, but it is a process!! I think you are right on with getting the mental/emotional support. Dirich, your feelings are not only normal but valid. You should be anxious, you should worry you might fail! It helps you set the right habits from day 1. This is not a guaranteed success. This isn't a magic wand, you are responsible for your weight loss. But the fun part is, there is no diet that (for me) was as easy or as successful as my band living. You will start to see food differently as time goes on. This isn't like other diets you've done because the food addiction hasn't ever been addressed. The band helps you become uninterested in food which is a whole world away from "eating less calories." Everyone can eat less calories and lose weight, but for us, we need something to help us stop focusing on food. The band does that through crushing hunger and preventing overeating (or slowing it down with pain and throw up). Like a previous poster said, this is a great solution because of the number of people who keep it off long term. None of the other diet options out there (food only) have this kind of success rate! Good luck and keep the faith. -
How much water should I be drinking?
Wheetsin replied to smita's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The advice about slipping slowly over an hour's period is usually geared more toward RNY patients. When I had my surgery my program was geared toward RNY with lap being a minority, and unfortunately they gave us all the same dietary guidelines. I did the math one day, and with all the Water, time to eat, etc. it would have been phsically impossible to get in everything they were saying to get in, unless I didn't sleep. 64oz is the general guideline. Some people will advocate for an additional 8 oz per 10 # overweight if you're on a high Protein, low carb diet. Some days I hit 64, some days more, usually I'm probably in the 30s. -
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH! I have recently had problems with my hair falling out from the root and I eat all the protein I can, I hardly get to eat anything else as a matter of fact, so Im going out to try to buy this tomorrow!!!! IM SO EXCITED! its not really an issue right now because my hair IS REALLY thick, but Im afraid it could become an issue

I got a fill on Mon. taking me to 6cc and I think I have found it finally. I don't feel tight, but three or four forks of chicken and I am done. Also, I have started the last two days with a protein drink just to test the waters, greek yogurt for lunch and them light dinner. NO HUNGER all day. I have to eat slower (mistake I've made in the past), but it is just great for now.

I have mentioned how hard sipping is, my crazy nausea and the fact that just looking at birth and my protein makes me gag, I think it's all mental being that I did a 3 week liquid diet, towards the end of my diet I was already feeling anxious about these foods. My doctor thinks it's totally normal that I feel this way, well yesterday I fainted and my mom thought it was because I haven't been eating or having much protein. Later on in the day she made me 1 scrambled egg, which I ate (chewed very well) only ate about half or a little more (1.50z) and it did not make me feel bad AT ALL.. I was expecting to feel sick being that I should be starting my puréed today and the scrambled egg is considered a soft food. How many of you have tried soft foods before directed and did not feel sick? I'm not planning on introducing the soft foods for another week as my plan states... merely because I'm scared to eat anything.... gosh, I'm even scared when sipping water [emoji46][emoji19].

I could consume 800-850 calories in shakes total 80gr protein, plus any broth, crystal light, sf jello, sf popsicles. I drank ready-made Premier, ready-made Isopure, Jay Robb packets - dreamsicle is my fav, Syntax nectar. Hospital - phone/charger, biotene spray, lip balm, slippers, robe, my own tea bags, hair brush, headband, and toiletries, and novel to read. I wore my same clothes home that I came in (leisure bra because it won't rub incisions.). My own pillow and lap quilt - was just to quell my nerves.

It will all come together. I am a little over 10 weeks out and eating regular foods. I get all my liquids in and then some. I still don't have much of an appetite so eating is sporadic and I still use Protein drinks to make sure I get all my protein in. Initially, I couldn't imagine how in the heck it was all gonna work because I could hardly drink-but it will...

Any ideas for protein foods? That don't have to be pureed. I've been living on cottage cheese and scrambled eggs

I think it can be hard to tell - you have to be eating the right foods to feel the perfect fill - you may get nice and full on a small amount of Protein and vegetables (and perhaps a small serve of a carb) and stay full for ages, perfect! But you could still, if you chose eat 6 Cookies for dinner instead! I think its a mistake to try to find a fill level where you cant eat those 6 cookies personally because you'll then probably be way too tight to be eating a good variety of healthy solid foods. As to the actual amount, well there's plenty of advocates of a half cup serving, but there's a gazillion of us around also who have and always HAVE eaten significantly more than that. The amount of food is right if you're losing nice and steadily 1lb or 2lb a week - averaged out. You will still reach plateaus and hold your weight steady for ages and that's when you have to really examine things to see if you need more fill.

The perfect fill allows you to eat three small meals a day (and I don't mean only 1/2 cup, small in comparison to what you used to eat...) and feel satisfied between those meals. You should not need a bedtime snack because you should still feel satiated from dinner. You should be able to eat enough real food (not liquid, not mushy - mostly dense proteins, vegetables and fruit) to get 60 grams of protein a day. If you can't eat that much, or are finding yourself going for soft mushy foods to avoid discomfort, you are probably too tight. Food should still be enjoyable with a lap band, not torture! And you shouldn't be walking around starving. It took me 5 fills to feel like that.

Blue Diamond has many different types. I have been a huge fan of the unsweetened chocolate and the unsweetened vanilla milks. Both are great for Stage 2 and you are able to mix them with so many different types of Proteins. They help bring back some of the normal feelings while on Phase 2. Hang in there and this time will go quickly. Cheers to your recovery.

love Almond Milk .. never drank or used it in my life before being banded but it is really good with protein powder... I blend it with some protein powder, chocolate, ice and it comes out smooth and creamy...

I keep seeing people talking about a liquid diet for a certain amount of time prior to the surgery. When I went to the doctor to get the final approval and to meet the surgeon, I asked about the liquid diet. I asked her if it was necessary. She told me that I could if I wanted to, but to just make sure I don't eat anything a certain number of hours before hand. What is the purpose of the prediet? What are suggestions because I have tried some of the protein shakes adn have found I can't digest them. They give me really bad gas or diarrhea. Because of being lactose intolerant, even with lactaid, I cant do slimfast. any help would be great.

My only carb guidance was "no more than 19g at once". Having said that, when sticking to the bariatric eating plan of protein > veggies > carbs, my daily intake is usually under 25g, and most carbs are usually dietary fiber from beans or other sources, which I do not count. Basically carbs are the last thing you want to eat. They're unavoidable in any sort of normal eating, but just minimize them.
-
Neither, nor do I count points, protein or anything. I have failed at diets all of my life. I don't want to spend the rest of my life on a diet. Instead, I just make healthier choices and listen to my band when it tells me it is time to stop eating. I am losing the recommended 1-2 pounds a week by doing this and thrilled with my progress.

Had my second fill yesterday and I've been in misery since trying to eat dinner last night. I didn't know much about what he did but today found out he went from 2.5cc to 9cc...water was going down fine but when I tried to eat last night it got stuck and I puked and puked all night. Finally about 2am I got to sleep but was back up at 6am. It took me about an hour to get my protein shake down this morning and have been sipping water through the day. Did another protein shake tonight for dinner and again am sipping on water. Is this feeling of tightness normal after such a big jump in the amount of fluid added to the band? I wasn't expecting it to be such a HUGE difference. Any suggestions?
-
Yeah, see my surgeon wants us to have liquid protein every morning for breakfast, at the very least, for the rest of our lives. He says, "I want to get you just tight enough that in the morning, you are only able to have a shake." Because, I guess, I don't know yet, the band or pouch for some reason are tighter in the morning than the rest of the day. Who knows!I sure don't want to be on liquids for the rest of my life, that's all I know!
-
Don't go crazy and get too much liquid protein. It's only good for a certain window. Maybe your doctor is different but my doctor advises against the use of it after a certain point, placing emphasis on dense food proteins for keeping full. I know that I did just that and now I'm stuck with at least a hundred dollars of different liquid proteins. They will now only come in handy on fill days.

R.I.P. Popcorn
Megan Sadler replied to Megan Sadler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." --susan maria leach before & after, second: living and eating well after weight-loss surgery. That's a line that is helping me. Im going back and forth. is this worth it? maybe i havent tried hard enough. ect. but i know that in the end it wont matter that i cant stuff my face anymore. it wont matter that i wont have a buffet infront of me. ill have a body i've always wanted, and the health ive never had. but this food grief is getting me. i was grieving Texas roadhouse last night. and popcorn today. how long does it take to get over this? Ive started prep work in my kitchen. i bought Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery: over 140 Delicious Low-Fat, High-Protein recipes to Enjoy in the Weeks, Months and Years after surgery by Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray. I started stocking my pantry according to this book so that afterwords i can live from this book for a while. (some of the recipes look amazing!) I reorganized my kitchen so that everything would be easy access. and started getting rid of junk. (though i cant seem to push myself to get rind of my 8 boxes of thin mints. guess those will be a treat later on or something or something i can give to family.) -
Chocolate Royale Slimfast powder, skim milk, crushed ice in a blender, and sometimes one or more of the following: malted milk powder (I like the taste) Benefiber (for obvious reasons) Knox bone and joint powder (extra protein) powdered fat-free milk (also extra protein) I hate regular protein shakes, or at least all of them that I have tried thus far. Like a lot of Bandsters, I have trouble with solids in the AM.

I think the biggest issue is going to be what the points are made up of. In WW, points are points but we want to get in a certain amount of protein and limit carbs during the weight loss phase. Points aren't that detailed.
