I want to get a challenge going for November and December to get us through these holidays! I'm willing to run it I just don't know how to get the sheet. Do I just make it up? Is anyone else interested in a challenge? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Just under 3 weeks out and busy!
James Marusek replied to Shrinkinqtpi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. In general the requirement for liquid intake is 64-80 ounces per day. But many things count towards this total. It is Water and milk. It is the liquid in the Protein shakes. It is the water you drink when you take the various Vitamins and meds throughout the day. It is the water content of Soups. It is tea, decaf coffee, Crystal Light flavored drinks, etc. So it is generally not hard to reach this goal. The protein requirement is generally 75-90 grams of protein per day. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Later after a month or two you can add Protein Bars as an option in meeting your protein goals. -
I had gastric bypass on Tuesday 5/20 and think I have been recovering pretty well. My big concern is that I still feel hunger pains. I thought that was supposed to go away?

Day After Reversion from RSG to Bypass
wdbass posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had surgery 2 days ago, which went better than expected. Mine was done primarily for GERD, but also because my weight was going up. My weight when I left for the hospital on Monday was 254. When I got on the scale this morning it was 264! I know this is all due to fluids taken at the hospital, but I was still surprised by how much! Any thought on how long it will take to lose this? -
I have been having problems with my insurance company. They approved the doc I was going to use 10 min from my house and 1 week out from surgery they decided to turn down using that doctor and instead go 4 hours south to ucla med. The doc there is trying to convince me that the bypass would be better for me because he said that over all you will loose 5% more weight loss over all. I have a final pre op appointment tomarow and then submit to insurance company again. Surgery scheduled for may 6th now if insurance douse not change there mind again

Possibly switching to bypass because of GERD
chryss replied to shy1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was all set for sleeve as well. At my appointment last week they told me that since October, they have had 2 patiences that have had to have their surgeries revised to Bypass because their mild GERD went to severe. That was enough for me to start to change my mind. I don't want dumping and was looking forward to an easier surgery but I keep thinking how great it would be to never have heartburn and reflux again. I'm also very scared but I think I'm changing to the bypass. I also have around 100 pounds to lose. When do you think you will have it?? -
My original surgery was MGB, but welcome to the team! We're few, but we're good! How long did they make your bypass, do you know?

Mrs. Krzyz, WOW. I can't believe you wrote that! I had to go read some of your old posts.... In one post you recommended that a patient move to the mushie stage (against their doctor's advice). In another post you admitted to eating Wendy's chili six days post-op. How can what WE post be considered detrimental to others, when what YOU are doing goes against the rules specified by our surgeons? I don't get it. The most shocking part, I find, is that you are a teacher. You definitely do not follow the books. We all got fat for eating too much. Now we have a tool inside of us that we must obey (for lack of a better word) ... this is the reason people get banded, so that they HAVE to eat a certain way otherwise there will be consequences to their actions. In my case I ate like a horse, ate too much, then at times barely ate any food at all. Now I am four days post-op and I AM STARVING at times! However I am deathly afraid of messing something up inside of me .. I have two small children, this procedure was self-pay .. I can't mess this one up. I have GOT to stay in control. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I will be able to eat more foods soon. Sure I have lost 13 pounds, which is great, but that isn't what this initial post-op period is all about. Would you suggest that gastric bypass patients have sugar, even it's just a little bit once in a while? Have some chili, it went down well (never mind it stretches their pouch)?

Do you sometimes NOT like the changes you see in the mirror?
Laurinda replied to dancinglamb's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok Kate that made me both laugh and become scared lol. I think when I go out tomorrow looking for bras I will bypass the sales person and just take one of every size in the fitting room. ( I say that but I can bypass A-C ) At this point I am not looking for anything pretty just practical..ok industrial even. I just want to be able to adjust the straps like a pulley "higher, higher, higher"! <wink> -
Restriction or Behavior modification
Pats Fan in MA replied to Thee-O's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thee-O, thank you for posting this, and thank you to all who responded; it's been very helpful to me as I am pre-surgery and still have these lingering questions about how I can use this opportunity to the fullest while not making myself obsessive about it or whatever. I wish my center had some sort of drop-in pre-surgery support group as I feel like I could use this- I overthink things a lot! Actually, I've started seeing a psychologist as part of starting this new chapter in my life, and she is helping me to remember to keep it simple, don't fall back into old patterns of thinking, when I feel the "but what if" questions coming into my head to practice sweeping them aside and sticking to the task at hand and the longer-term goal. I appreciate reading how you all are doing and will continue to read as I approach my surgery date of November 9. I will hopefully be able to be as productive a member of the forums post-op as everyone here! -
For BMI > 60, GBP instead of Lap Band?
VelvetKiss replied to only1nik's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my Lap Band placed in July 2006, My BMI was 103 and my surgeon too tried to push the bypass or vg and I said no because I wanted the slower and more permanent weight loss in my opinion and I also felt that I could lose the weight I needed to lose. My year is coming up and I have so far lost 130 lbs, I have to update my ticker. It does require work on your part, but worth it in my opinion. My hardest times for me are in between fills. I say get as many as you need, I didnt at first but now I am getting them alot more. I hope this helps. Good Luck in what ever surgery you choose. -
Hi all, I just saw a doctor yesterday and discussed getting lap band surgery. She does not suggest that I get it because of my extreme obesity. She feels the gastric bypass would be more effective. Apparently, you can cheat easily with the band and it will take alot of will power to actually have the band be effective. I am 335 lbs now and want to lose 185 lbs. Should I just get the more aggressive surgery, even though it is much more extreme? I have PCOS, insulin resistance and many other problems and I am only 30 and still want to have a child. Please help with some advice! Thanks. Nicole:confused:

For BMI > 60, GBP instead of Lap Band?
quakergirl replied to only1nik's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had a BMI pretty close to what you're talking about, and my surgeon didn't have any objection to me getting the band. Personally, I feel that the gastric bypass should be considered a true last resort due to that permanent malabsorption aspect to it, and the amount of weight I've lost with teh band has definitely had a dramatic positive impact on my life, so I am glad that I had the option to go for the band. -
Give your opinion to tell or not
m_rose replied to New Me 787's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I struggled with this topic too. I actually put out a similar Forum a few months back. I have decided to tell my mother, father, both stepparents, my best friend, boyfriend and 3 co-workers. That's it. I am not even telling any of my siblings because my sister is heavier than I and believes that WLS is the easy way out and so forth. I suffer from PCOS and had an ultrasound last week due to heavy bleeding and the Ultra sound tech was asking questions and such and I mentioned that when having the Bypass my GYN was going to be there to remove cysts, endometriosis, etc. The look on her face was that of pure DISGUST!!! She then said "You're going to be a twig" "There are so many complications with that" "You can't eat and drink at the same time" I was so annoyed but it made me realize why I don't tell just anyone. This is a decision for US not anyone else!!!! -
Give your opinion to tell or not
Ginger Snaps replied to New Me 787's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I decided to chance it yesterday and tell a friend that I'm having bypass and anxiously waited for her comments. She said, "ok..." and then we started talking about a walking club we're trying to start. Anti-climatic! -

Hi, everybody. I recently underwent gastric bypass surgery on 09/21/16. I'm having a very strange problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I am having a lot of trouble getting my daily liquid requirements in. Liquids don't taste good to me. In fact, they taste absolutely awful. This isn't nausea. This is strictly an issue with taste. I do fine with chicken broth, soups, and Jello. It's things like Water, decaf tea, crystal light, etc that I can't tolerate. Everything seems to have a very exaggerated aftertaste to the point that I need to use a mouth rinse to get rid of the taste. Water has a very metallic taste to me. It's as if I can taste every mineral in the water. I've tried all different brands of bottled water and I get the same result to varying degrees. I tried many different brands of Protein prior to surgery and found that I liked Premier Protein best. For some reason, it tastes completely different to me now. It has a very slimy taste now and I almost gag trying to drink it. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this? I am so thirsty and obviously not getting in my protein requirements. Any suggestions or recommendations? I'm a nurse and I know how important it is for me to be compliant with the daily requirements for Fluid and protein. I'm at a complete loss with this. Please help. Is there a such thing of a half bypass?
Middus replied to KaylaWls1216's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, the sleeve originated as part of the duodenal switch procedure (which has a bypass component), so she probably had a sleeve gastrectomy. Sent from my SM-N900P using the BariatricPal App -
First thank you for reading my blog. I hope to help others with information that I am digging up on the Gastric sleeve. A few months ago, I decided to go back to the bariatric surgeon because I am not loosing weight. I suspect its because of my Thyroid, the fact that I live with my ex, something deep in my brain and that I hate to exercise. Not to mention I am in Arizona where it so freakin hot. I have already gone through the 6 months of Dr supervised weight loss. So when I went in today, I was told that I just needed another psych eval and pre- op labs. Good! The doctor suggested the sleeve as the gastic band's failure rate is 50% and going higher. I agreed to the sleeve. The thing I am concerned about is long term effects of the sleeve. Not 5 or even 10 years from now but 25 to 30 years. So, I started digging into what could possibly happen. I am doing this to make my life better. I just want to be sure that I am making the right decision. You know, all of those women who silicone breast implants thought they were safe. Now they are having chronic problems. I dont want chronic problems. So, here we go. What I already know. The stomach will be reduced by 80%. The spincter ( tho opening to the stomach) will still be intact. The stomach will still have the ability to digest food, move and absorb vitamins. Although, It will produce less acid and absorb less vitamins and can form ulsers easily. Hense, the no anti-inflamatories. The surgeon will not do the sleeve on anyone who is already being treated for gastric reflux as rhe procedure will make it so much worse. In addition, even if you haven't had reflux you may develop it around the 5-6 year. The surgeons believe this is due to the internal pressure of the stomach and the weakened fibers of the stomach walls. So... if you are worried look up GERD. If it gets too bad, the doctor will ask you to get a RNY or bypass, as they will releave the pain. Which leads to... looking up everything about these procedures. Well, this is enough tonight. I will be back with more concrete info and websites.

@@erica2185 I hear you on that. I am about 3.5 weeks away from having a very large plastics surgery. Normally I don't get anxious about this sort of thing having had many many surgeries in my life. But in July I had an arm lift which went very well. I clearly was not prepared for the kind of pain I had with my arms. I had a lot of burning and itching for many many weeks before I got some relief. Well now I am having a full Tummy Tuck and Breast Lift with Augmentation. If my tummy or breasts burn and itch as badly as my arms I might actually lose my mind. I know what to expect from tummy surgery as I have had a few but this one is obviously a bit more involved with larger scars to deal with. Its 3 weeks away and every time I think about it, my tummy actually flutters. Also, I will have 4 JP drains that I will have to empty or my husband will. I know I can handle it but it is just gross to think about and had me a little worried. Out of all of my surgeries, both my hysterectomy and my gastric bypass were the easiest for me. My pain threshold is very high until it wears me down. In other words, I can take it for quite a while but once i get exhausted, It just takes harder to take. best of luck on your surgery.
