  1. lifestyle is the same from what I can tell. With bypass there's about a 30% chance you'll dump (which some people consider a "pro", but others consider it a "con"), and with sleeve there's about a 30% chance of developing reflux (or if you already have reflux (GERD), it could get worse). You'll have to take vitamins for the rest of your life with either surgery, but there's more of a consequence if you slack off if you have bypass. Other than that...

    Revision for regain

I'd call the company and ask. Even if that insurance company covers more than one weight loss surgery per lifetime (and some don't...), your employer may not have wanted that coverage included in the policy they offer their employees. Also, even when places approve revisions, some of them will only approve them if there's a medical reason for it - something like severe GERD or some kind of malfunction. But I'd ask - you never know.
  3. I needed the bypass because of reflux. If I had asked for anything else, the surgeon wouldn't have done it.
  4. Had both my original surgery and my revision with his colleague Dr. Anwar. My experience at the hospital was good overall both times. One of my coworkers did have surgery with Dr. Houseworth and said it was a good experience.
  5. I have my consultation on 8/6 so I will be talking my surgeon but I think I am leaning toward the bypass because I have horrible reflux already.
  6. I am in the same boat, after doing more research it looks like my insurance will only pay for banding or gastric bypass. I thought wanted the sleeve...but I'm so tired of this weight that I'm thinking just going with what I can get paid for.
  7. Generally the post-op plans are similar. At least a similar as anything since each surgeon's plan varies dramatically from other surgeons. I haven't seen a surgeon have different plans for their sleeve and bypass patents, not that I've been looking particularly closely. 30-50% of Bypass patients experience some level of dumping. If you are one of the (un)lucky ones then your surgery will be less forgiving on sugar and to a lesser degree fats. I happen to be one of the lucky folks who dumps and it has kept me on the straight and narrow. Good luck, Tek
  8. Did you have revision because of regain or gerd? I don’t have any issues except regain.
  9. I had the sleeve in 2016 then had two babies and ultimately, regained almost all of it back. I have PCOS and infertility (had to do IVF), but no gerd. Will I be approved for revision from regain? I have BCBSIL PPO.
  10. If I were in your position, I would honestly go with what the insurance pays for. I wouldn't want to, but for me, cost would be very very important. But if you can afford it and you really don't want the bypass, then go ahead and self pay.
  11. Trying to decide between ByPass and Sleeve. I tend to overthink things. Is the lifestyle after surgery any different between Sleeve vs ByPass?
  12. I am considering having a Bariatric surgery. My insurance company only covers Gastric Bypass surgery. I was really leaning towards Gastric Sleeve operation. My thought is Sleeve is less complex so it’s safer, fewer cuts and staples. It essentially costs about the price of a used car, which I can afford. Should I pay out of pocket for Sleeve or use insurance for ByPass? ByPass seem to have greater weight loss effect. Any advice?

    March surgeries

Hi All!! Had bypass on March 3rd and passed my 100lbs lost mark today!! Please keep in mind that I lost 45lb pre-op so it's about 56lbs post-op so don't compare it to the full 100lbs. I know we all stress out comparing weight loss, but I just wanted to celebrate with my March peeps. Making good eating choices has become more of a struggle since I'm off for the summer. I'm hoping when I start back next week that getting on a schedule will help. We've had a great summer! I've been able to keep up with my kids, ride roller coasters again and shop in the non-plus side of the store! Hope everyone is doing well!!
  14. I'm doing the band to bypass too. I had my band placed in 2016 and it didn't really help me at all 😕 I lost like, 20 pounds at first but then stopped losing. Could never find my sweet spot. I'm on Facebook groups that are band to bypass and have seen a lot of other folks have better success with the bypass. I'm terrified they're gonna open me up and see a ton of damage from the band and not be able to do it... there are plenty of stories about that happening. Lap bands should be completely banned, they're the worst!!!
  15. I had my surgery on April 28th, 2021 at astonishing 444 (481 was my highest recorded...July 2020). So far I'm down to 355! Everyone I've talked to says I'm flying with my weight loss compared to others......anyone else have the pounds and inches melt away this quick? Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I am 5 weeks out from bypass and I get hunger pains too but the worst is for some reason I never threw up up until now. I've thrown up 3x in the last 5 days. I think it's bc I ate too fast and too much:( so just dont do what I did lol Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app

Severe left side pain directly after surgery?

I had the bypass on June 14th. Ohhh I know exactly how she feels though. I was in so much pain all I could do is cry but yet that hurt too lol I however don't deal with pain well. I was miserable till probably almost 3 weeks. Walking a little bit each day really did help though..well in a weird way lol it hurt yet felt good lol. I so had nooo support from my husband so trust me just be patient with her and be as helpful as possible. Worrying about her and posting this is how it should be. That's awesome of you! Just help her as much as possible. Make her foods etc well when she starts pureed and stuff. Good luck to you both:) Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. I had a gastric bypass in January of this year. After that one of my most favorite snacks were the quest protein chips! They have almost 20 g of protein and 150 cal. So so so good! I just had to have a revision last week due to a perforated ulcer. My new favorite is cottage cheese with powdered peanut butter, or cottage cheese with some sugar-free Jell-O sprinkled over it!
  19. LisaMarrie, I appreciate your reply. Have you had your revision surgery yet? I am taking all your words in and have been thinking about this all morning. I have had mental health therapy along with my eating disorder and have worked on a lot of this in the past. I just sometimes doubt myself. If I already know what to do, why do I ignore myself? I am super grateful I have a loving husband and a best friend that both support my decision. My family is on board too but it’s my own shame of having to do this again that is difficult. I guess that’s another subject I can touch on but after 17 years of living with bypass surgery, I almost have to starve myself to lose any weight at all. Is that ring true for you too? It’s so hard to lose weight now that my stomach is stretched and having to eat 800 to 900 calories to lose weight makes for a very cranky lady. I just want to feel like this time it’s forever. I feel ready and want these thoughts I’m having are normal and others might have felt the same way. Make sense?
  20. I had absolutely terrible constipation post revision too! I also had an enema then stayed on laxatives for a long time, under the supervision of my surgeon of course. (I was so afraid of constipation again that I think I stayed on them a lot longer than I should have. In fact I am finally lax free using a stool softener only when necessary. But I’m happy to report that the plumbing still works on it’s own 👍🏽) Speedy Recovery!

    Surgeon Disappointed 😞

I only lost 15 my first month. I am 6 months out and have lost 85 total although 10 of it is after a revision last week as an emergency. I had a perforated ulcer which is rare. Do you still work with a nutritionist? If not I highly recommend it. Mine has been awesome! Especially when I had stalls and felt really down like you. They kept telling me that my body has had significant trauma from surgery and is trying to figure out what the heck just happened. I agree with a comment above about it being a marathon. I thought I was losing slow but to see my total weight loss after 6 months I feel better. Maybe put your scale away and weigh in once a month. Also track your NSV’s. I had 6 weeks of no weight loss but I went down a whole pant size!
  22. One week post op. My weight has dropped far faster than I would like. Went from 144 the day of surgery to 136 today. The constipation is awful. Nothing works. I already struggled with constipation pre revision. I finally went a little with an enema. I am nauseous, weak and tired. Getting fluids in but very few calories since shakes lead to queasiness. I have run low fevers off and on since surgery.
  23. Thank you so much for the summary of what you heard from the surgeons. This is actually the first time that I have heard a surgeon has noticed a trend of long term problems from sleeves revising to RNY. Thank you for making me aware of this. Sometimes I have wondered if I should do the revision to RNY since it is supposed to be the most reliable fix to this issue (and so many doctors push it as the best solution), but I definitely do not want to create new problems for myself. The other thing that scares me about the RNY is: if it doesn't go well, then what do you do?! Interesting that you got to talk to someone who had the ligamentum teres repair. Based on what I have learned in researching the Linx, I would wonder if her problems with diarrhea and dumping syndrome might mean that the ligamentum teres repair is pushing on her vagus nerve. The vagus nerve runs along the esophagus and stomach, and when the vagus nerve gets irritated, it can cause symptoms like that. I have seen people talk about how sometimes the Linx can cause vagus nerve issues, but never knew that could be a problem with the LT procedure too. Good to know. I think that an 80-90% chance of getting off PPIs with just a basic hernia repair sounds amazing. Do you mind telling me who the surgeons who said that are? Even if the repair doesn't last forever, maybe if you can get a few years of relief, there will be a better solution later on down the road.

    Is it Worth it?

For me, the surgery wasn't worth it. I believe it is the reason that I ended up with a hiatal hernia (I didn't have one before the surgery) and I have some moderate GERD problems since the surgery (though my GERD is not as severe as the GERD that some unlucky people end up with after the sleeve). Looking back on it now, I wish I would have just avoided any bariatric surgery at all, but if I were still going to get surgery, I personally think that the gastric bypass would have been a better way to go actually. I chose the sleeve because I was scared of the bypass and didn't want to take the risks of the bypass, but the bypass at least is the "tried and true" method that has stood the test of time over decades. The sleeve has a pretty significant risk of ending up with severe GERD, and if you get severe GERD, many doctors will tell you to get a bypass to fix the GERD. Then you end up going through ANOTHER surgery, which is riskier than just getting the bypass to start.
  25. I am so sorry this happened to you. My mother has this thing about fat people being disgusting and my daughter and I were just discussing today that we think she has an ED. I have body dysmorphia because if her calling me fat, black and ugly most of my childhood (she also has issues with colorism) so I know exactly the struggle. This is not a question you asked but I am going to suggest that in addition to food therapy you seek out mental health therapy to help with the horrible history you have had. It is also very important to have a support group, for me that has been my kids, a close friend of mine and online support groups like this one. Now to answer your question: I was banded for over 13 years during that time I learned the difference in feeling full and satisfied. I learned how to eat slowly and chew thoroughly, I learned that I don't have to eat all of the cake right now there will be other days for cake, I lost my love of bread and soda and if I do have a craving for it I learned to have it in moderation and quit. I have the tools it is just up to me to use them. So, if I have all of this knowledge why did I need a revision? Because after I lost my band I went hog wild and tried to eat all of the things that I THOUGHT I was missing, however, I was still unconsciously eating the way I described above but was making poor food choices too often. Without the band I gained about 42 pounds BUT I maintained that same weight for 5 years. In summary, I have the knowledge, the tool and I am mentally ready to keep the weight off for good.
