Thanks Cindy, Even with my band, I was starting to re-evaluate how much more weight I wanted to lose. while my ticker shows 30 pounds to go, I had started to believe that 15 would be better. I already have too much loose skin hanging ( arms, legs and belly) and it will get much worse. So like a lot of long term goals we make in life, along the way we make changes to those goals. so my new goal is 155 and really my goal is more about dress size than anything else. I really just want to be able to easily go shopping and when I do, have the things I buy look good. I don't feel a strong need to weigh what I did in high school. I'm older now and my body is different than it was way back then! It's really about feeling good about myself and I already do, any more weight loss is icing on the cake, but I still have the goal to stay focused and lose more. I think you're right, it really takes someone that has had a weight problem to really understand the struggle it is to lose weight. Thanks again for the advice and support! I do plan to hang around the November Nymphs threads.

I actually researched for a year before deciding. I researched outcomes and complication rates for both and talked to people I know that have had either VSG or bypass. I decided on sleeve since it doesn't have the malabsorption issues and there are less associated complications and side effects. On my initial visit, the nurse practitioner that works for the program suggested I revisit bypass because I have PCOS and she said my weight loss would be better with bypass because of the malabsorption. (PCOS makes it harder to lose weight). However, I was set against bypass after all my research and when I met with the surgeon, he said I made the right decision especially considering some of the meds I take for asthma and with the fact that I sometimes have to take steroids for my asthma. He says with the malabsorption, my meds would not be as effective. So ultimately, I would say to do some research, decide what you can live with and then discuss it with your surgeon. Hello November sleevers. I'm having my surgery on the 17th of Nov. Super excited but also super nervous. Just looking for tips from those who have had it already this month and those who like me are nervous about there up coming appointment. Look forward to hearing from you all.

@@@lici@ I am not a November sleever, but just wanted to wish you good luck on your surgery! I am about 7 months post-op and remember feeling nervous like you beforehand. Hopefully your pre-op has gone well as my surgeon said that my liver was really small which made the surgery much easier - that is the reason for the liver shrinking diet prior to surgery. Overall, I found the surgery easier to recover from than I expected, however as you'll see from this site everyone's experience is different. I find sticking to the basics works best for me - hydrate, Protein first, track food and move my body. Take good care!

Last appointment is November 26th its gone by fast! Anyone else 2 months left or near 2 months left? I'm required to lose 20lbs by my surgeon and I've lost 15 so far. Was definitely not easy cause I hit a stall at only 10 lbs and tried uping my work out and that was a no go so I went on a mostly liquid diet. I've still got a while but I prefer to get things done and over as quick as possible lol. The only thing that's left is two nut classes which I think I'll be told to do next appointment. It's crazy to think that this year may be my last year to stuff my face at thanksgiving as hard core as everyone else.

I hear ya there. My surgery is November 6th and i'm nervous and scared as well. Just keep trying to think about all the positives. How much better life will be, all that once used to stop us won't be able to anymore.

Is there anyway you can give me an example of what your daily food looks like? Sorry to be a pain. I have been trying to get a hold of my doctor's office and they never get back to me. The dietcian won't be back until November 13th. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

DAMN WHAT A STORY I HAD MY SURGURY IN NOVEMBER AND I WAS FEELING LIKE THIS WHY ISISNT IT WORKIN LIKE IT DOES ON OTHERS THANK U SO MUCH FOR YOUR STORY IM GONNA BE THINKING DIFFERENT NOW -
hello all I do a lot of reading on the site and not a lot of posting. I feel like a failure after looking at all the march posts. I was banded 3-14-05 To date I have lost only 36 lbs. But I have went from a 18-20 pant size to a mostly 14 some times i need a 16. I see my before pictures and there is a big difference but i really thought i would be further along. I have one draw back. I don't like my surgon so I don't go for banding and often as i should. I am going on november 4th. I have times when there is no restriction and times like tonight we went to the mall I ordered a tostada with Beans, meat, lettus and cheese I got 4 bites but i think lettus got stuck or something and it all came up. I have only lost about 5lbs since my last fill over 2 mo ago. Well i needed to vent and talk with you all because sometimes I feel as though i don't even have a band. p.s. I am glad to know that i am not the only one on this site that struggles with soda diet or not. I have tried to come off again and i have gone 4 days. I know its better for me so i am trying. Thanks for being a great big ear for me. Christine

@Tealael. What couldn't you find out... whether she's a pharmacologist or a PharmD? Now that I think about it, if she works in a hospital, she has to be a clinical PharmD. Pharmacists require a license to practice pharmacy. While PharmD's also study pharmacology, that is not the focus of their expertise. My daughter studied for 5 years plus one year of residency at a Veteran's Hospital. I'm very proud of her. Again, you're lucky that your program makes a concerted effort to help their patients with as many meds as they are able, despite the lack of data available for bariatric patients. I remember when I first brought up the topic of medication malabsorption at my first surgeon appointment. I could tell from Dr. S---'s expression that he didn't like how specific my questions were, and then, he surprisingly changed the subject. I knew then that I'd have to figure out my meds pretty much by myself... with the help of my kids and other health professionals whose egos allowed them to admit that there's not much research out there to go on. As for your questions about the requirements for COE certification, I found this link (below). I'm not sure, but I think a hospital can be a COE hospital independent of being COE certified for every program they're involved in. I don't think the hospital I had my bypass in was COE certified for bariatric surgery, even though it was a COE-certified hospital in other areas. I had two full knee replacements at this same hospital, and I don't know if they were COE certified for knee and hip replacements either. Too late now. Maybe if I have to have a brain transplant someday, I'll make sure it's at a COE-certified hospital for brain transplants! https://www.obesitycoverage.com/insurance-and-costs/pre-approval-process/center-of-excellence Some of the programs that a hospital can receive COE certification for include: bariatric surgery knee and hip replacement maternity care spine surgery transplants Oh, and I'm happy to have a new case-study buddy (aka someone who enjoys researching medical and scientific articles too!)

OK my surgeon said he would not be repairing my hital hernia during the sleeve. He said its basically out of the way, where he will be working and that if I was having the gastric bypass he would do it. I'm fine with it :-)

Sooo.. One year out......
haleytrim replied to Madam Reverie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow! If I had any doubts that I could do this, I don't now. You are a caretaker and sleever success at the same time. I have just become the caretaker for my Mom and Dad who are 81 and 85 respectively. Surgery scheduled for November 17th. I CAN DO THIS!!! Thanks Madam Reverie. -
I'm basically doing the same thing. I had a baby in November 2013 and then had my sleeve surgery in October 2014. I hope to get pregnant around February 2016, which is a few months shy of my 18. Hopefully, I get pregnant a lot quicker then the last time! It took awhile and a few rounds of clomid (I'm happy that's all it took). Now that I actually have my sleeve, I don't think I could sustain me and a baby at this point (4 months out). There is no way I could eat enough. Hopefully in a year, I'm at goal and able to eat a little more to have a healthy pregnancy.

Hi everyone! My name is Jhanette and I live in Miami FL. If you can image I'm 26years old and I haven't been to the beach in god knows how long. I just had my LAP-BAND®® surgery today 4/15/2010 and now I'm home checking out this site and reading all of these amazing stories. So here is mine. I've always been over weight since I was very young but ever since I turned 22 my weight seriously hit the roof. My highest weight was 285lbs. I started to look into the gastric bypass and was going to do it but in the end I chickened out. I was able to lose 10lbs by myself before I decided to join QWLC (Quick Weight Loss Center) and it did work! I lost 40lbs. A total of 50lbs on my own! But even though I lost that weight it was a battle to keep it off. I came to a point where I just stop losing weight and couldn't pass 240ish. So I started looking in to the LAP-BAND®® and after doing a lot of thinking and researching I finally woke up one day and set up an appt to see the doctor. It was on a Saturday that I went to strax rejuvenation in Kendall and I got approved for my surgery. 2weeks later I had my LAP-BAND®® surgery on 4/15/2010 with Dr. Michael Choi. So right now I'm super sore and but I'm feeling great! I'm truly excited about this journey and I can't wait to see what's next. Just wanted to share a long story with you cuz i was in the mood. Hope you all are doing well and losing all the weight u want. I wish you tons and tons of luck and I hope to be talking to you guys soon :tongue_smilie:

It is up to me to make this work. I have a friend who had a bypass several yrs ago and couldn't figure out why she was gaining weight back. She kept saying 'but I can't eat that much'. We would go to lunch and both would order a cheeseburger. I would get fries. I ate my burger and most of the fries (this is before my surgery) and she would eat half of her burger and just a couple of fries. She would get a to go bag and then mid- afternoon she would eat the rest of her burger and any leftover fries. She ended up eating almost the same thing I did. You will gain weight if you eat too many calories- the sleeve will limit how much you can eat at one sitting, but grazing is very easy and a habit I don't want to get into.

The nurse said the same thing 2 weeks; I'm like are you sure? She said the most was 4 weeks;????????? I'm puzzled; my friend had bypass last year; at her 2 week mark she had to have gallbladder surgery; total 6 weeks out of work. I'm kind of worried because we are 10 days full liquids prior to surgery and 16 days after full liquids. ( 5 of those clear only) therefor the gallbladder has nothing to work for and can cause stones. They found 2 small stones at the bottom of my gallbladder ; hoping he takes it at the same time. I will know I guess the morning of : 7 more days. Whoooo hoop!

Wow, that advice seems really odd...my dr has a contract that I had to sign stating I understood I was going through a gastric banding procedure and that if any hernia was found, I would authorize any hernia repair. I had a large hiatal hernia he found during the surgery and repaired. So that just seems crazy. Is he possibly really into the gastric bypass procedure and believes you may do better with it? I would personally go for a second opinion. (I'm 4 weeks and 1 day post op also...so this is still all fresh in my mind. Had my first fill today and dr said I'm looking great.)

I am so happy to hear you liked him. I am hoping he returns my call tomorrow. I already filled out the long form, so we would just need to discuss it. What made you decide to go with the sleeve rather than the gastric bypass? I hope you get approved. Are you nervous about it all? I want to try to get it done within the next few weeks if I decide to go with him. I am afraid I will lose my gumption if I wait. -
Metabolic bone changes after bariatric surgery
James Marusek replied to 4MRB4PHOTO's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It seems like the recommendations for RNY gastric bypass and Duodenal Switch surgery patients appear to be those that my surgeon follows. Supplementation after gastric bypass should include calcium citrate 1,200–1,500 mg/d, which can be taken in 2–3 split doses, 4–5 hours apart for optimal absorption. Minimum Vitamin D intake of 3000 IU/d, titrate to >30 nl/mL. Calcium citrate is preferable to calcium carbonate due to better absorption in the absence or reduction of gastric acid. Supplementation after BPD and BPD/DS should include calcium of 1800–2400 mg/d and minimum Vitamin D 3000 IU/d, titrate to >30 nl/mL. After RNY and Duodenal Switch, there are a lot of Vitamins required daily. The calcium tablets are a major inconvenience because they taste terrible (just like eating chalk), must be spaced apart throughout the day and one has to take so many of them. As a result, I had one individual in our bariatric support group meeting say they were no longer going to take Calciums. I even cut mine back a little. But when I had my annual blood tests, they found I was on the low side and recommended that I take more Calcium. THEY GOT ME. I WAS CAUGHT. So I went back to their required dosage rates. I guess the main point is that after these types of surgery, the requirement to take supplements span for the rest of our lives - PERIOD, NO EXCEPTIONS. -
Hi. We should exchange email address so we can keep up with each others progress. Mine is sheila.pinkney@shaw.ca Luckily I do not have to do any pre-op dieting like the liquid diet. I have been doing nothing but pre-op dieting since November 30 and I have lost more than the required 10% and I am still following the 1 cup of food 3 times a day. Although I do cheat now and then. My surgeon said that changing to this diet from the very beginning helps to train you to prepare for life post surgery. Anyway, hang in there, our day will be here before we know it. Sheila

Hi all, Newbie here - I've been a stalker for awhile, but I've decided it's time to join the discussions! Need some advice. I started the process in August, had my first consultation in late September and here I am, already insurance approved for the sleeve in early November. I will very likely get a surgery date for December. Potential problem - I received a promotion at work and will start working in the new job in two weeks. Is surgery within the first few weeks of the job going to be too much to handle? It'll be a desk job, so I don't worry too much about physical restrictions.. but I'm more worried about being able to take on two big changes in such a short period of time. Thoughts??

I get what you're feeling, I freaked out off and on too. I am also basically "just plain overweight" although i did find out that I have MINOR sleep apnea, but I only need a mouth guard not a CPAP for it. And I have several friends and my own mom who have had the bypass. My mom had the bypass 12 years ago, and she has had to have to do B12 shots, iron transfusions, has had all sorts of stuff happen, BUT that was 12 years ago, and it was a bypass, not a sleeve. I said I would NEVER , EVER do WLS, but here I am, one week post op with my sleeve. my mom has told me (many times) not to mourn for food, yes you can have a bite of a cookie, BUT is it worth it when it comes down to it? Food is fuel, I keep telling myself that. I have to cook for my family, I'm still in liquids, I want what they have, but I want better self esteem, a longer life expectancy and smaller clothes more. Some will fail, but some will succeed and be here years from now rocking an awesome picture. I know a lady who had a bypass 2 years ago and now she is heavier than before. If you want this, you will succeed. 12 years out and my mom has gained 20, but she got down so low she looked sick. You can do it!

October 17Th'ers.. Where Are Ya?
Kmasden replied to imlosingit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope you are okay jhumphries, that isn't near enough calories and I am wondering if you need to get in sooner so you don't dehydrate (if you aren't getting even clear Fluid down). On a side note, i did a no no today. My diet has been super conservative with still being on thicker liquids and another almost two weeks to hit purees, so i've been feeling a tad bit jealous of those of you having a little more "real" sustenance. Plus my weight loss seems to be stalling. Boo. Even though i know it can't last forever. I did eat a couple bites of a very finely chopped chicken salad and it went down fine, but the no no was i decided to have an itty bitty pinkberry. I didn't have toppings except for a little nutella. A couple things i noticed was that wow, i was full very fast...was hard to finish and i shouldn't have. I ended up soooo sick. I didn't throw up because i was driving, but felt like it and was sweaty and sick and felt like i would have a bridesmaids episode if i could. I'm not sure if it was overstuffing as the frozen yogurt is thicker than what i've been having, or if it was the richness of that little spoon of nutella. Either way, while it was delish for all of 10 minutes eating it while melting in the hot california sun, but it was horrid for a good half an hour afterwards at least. Came home and went straight to bed, feeling better now. Could that be "dumping" even though i'm sleeved and not bypassed, or was this a typical, i overdid it. It was super small (comparitively) but still a good 1/4 cup or slightly more. Guess the good thing is, the type of sick i felt is something i don't want to revisit. Also, the full part, it wasn't so much that i felt full like old days where you have to unbuckle, but full like i did not want another bite...more satisfied full. Unfortunately the brain running my mouth had a hard time giving it up without eating the rest. Big mistake!! Hope you all are doing okay. It's a rollercoaster that's for sure! -
Listen up Public: I did not have a bypass!
Bob_350lbs replied to DownInSocal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For me, it really mattered when my PCP confused the VG with the bypass. He just couldn't fathom what a VG was, kept saying I would have malabsorbtion and end up gaining all my weight back and have to take supplements the rest of my life. I even brought out the pictures to show him, and his mind just couldn't wrap around it. That upset me. I needed his support and didn't get it. My family got it, after I explained it about 3 times. And, I got their support. Yes, it kinda of makes me mad when people don't get it. Because I would have never had a bypass. The VG is so much smarter.
