Back to work after one week??
SpartanMaker replied to KRod6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think I could have done it. I'm a little over 2 weeks out and I went back to work part time the last 2 days. I found it very taxing. It partly how tired I feel, but maybe even more so that I'm mentally drained. I work from home, but have a mentally challenging job, so I have to have a clear head. Now that I'm actually starting real food, it's getting better every day. The other challenge early on was just how much of my energy and thought went in to keeping up with my liquid and protein intake. I'm afraid that if I was trying to work as well, I likely would have ended up dehydrated or worse. -
14 days post op & COVID positive
TheLosingGame posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a feeling this would happen! Somehow made it the entire pandemic without covid and tested positive while in recovery from surgery. I had no idea I had it the first 2 days bc I thought i was dealing with symptoms of dehydration and struggling with hitting my protein goals for a couple days. Turns out it’s covid. anybody gone through the same? have any tips on getting through this when you already feel a bit tired and weak? I’ve already called my doctor and got advised on which medicines/relief I may take that won’t interfere with my post-op medicine regime -
I had my sleeve done at 7:30am on the 4th, they kept me in the hospital 2 nights, I was released a few hours ago. The most sore incision is the one they pulled my stomach through. I've been focusing on getting enough fluids, have no appetite at all so haven't even tried a protein shake yet. Had a lot of nausea the first 36 hours and was on Zofran that whole time to help with the nausea. It's improved now, not 100% but not so bad I was afraid I was going to vomit. My 2 biggest issues are getting up and moving enough and not getting enough fluids I've been trying to force fluids but after a few small sips I start feeling the pressure on my chest they warned was a sign of having too much so I have no idea how I'm going to get enough fluids. I slept the majority of the time in the hospital and still am sleepy and kind of want to just sleep but need to remind myself to keep getting up and walking around at least for a few min.

Tips on what to expect first few weeks
SpartanMaker replied to LaurieDavis777's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'd add that everyone's experience is different, so it's hard to tell you "what to expect". I for example had very little pain, no nausea, and had no problems getting in my fluids and protein. Other people have had all those problems and more. Perhaps the one thing that most of us have in common is that it all gets easier every day. When you get down or depressed post surgery (and you will), remember that the struggles are generally temporary. As they say: "this to will pass". -
Congratulations to all of us October surgery buddies!!! 🥳🎉 I just want to encourage everyone that you will all do just fine! It is a mind thing so think positive throughout the pre-op phase and your post-op phase should be just fine. I am on day 9/21 of my liquid diet and will be getting the DS on October 19th. I am overly excited to continue my journey & so far day 3 & 6 were the days I craved the most. I keep a journal of how I feel on each day & if there has been any changes to my body. When I do get cravings I tend to drink a bottle of water first to see if that helps & if it doesn’t I grab a protein shake or my low sodium chicken broth & pretend I’m eating whatever I was craving LOL

Before and After Pics
Mariann812 replied to Roserie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve lost 60 lbs in just under 4 months. 🤗 liquids: all I drink is water (64 Oz) and I have 1 cup of coffee a day. I have lost my taste for coffee. I go through phases craving other things. I haven’t done Crystal Lite except for my first 2 weeks post op. I felt like the longer I drank it, my weight loss slowed. I have always noticed that about me and artificial sweeteners in steady, large amounts. on the liquid phase of post op, I had bone broth, sugar free jello, sugar free ice pops, AND water. 🤦🏻♀️ there is some recipe floating around on this site I think for mashed potatoes with cream of chicken soup and the lumps are strained out. It’s delicious and I was happy to have that for dinner every day. It’s all really a blur now. I had no appetite and I still dont, so I made sure I met hydration levels. When I was able to do that, I added in protein. I think I used Atkins because I detested Fairlife and Core and the others. The surgeon told me to be hydrated first and then concentrate on protein. Atkins has a 30 g of protein shake that I try to have once a day now. I know that I don’t eat anywhere near the calories I am suppose to, but I am simply not hungry and I take my vitamin with iron so I’m not going to worry about it. my biggest most constant craving is salad. 🤣🤣🤣 With a small amount of sugar free salad dressing and crisp lettuce, and white meat chicken (Panera), I’m good. I try to meet the protein numbers with Atkins Protein Wafer Crisp bars (1 a day). I read every single label before I buy anything, and I’m enjoying cooking for the first time in forever. Making things yourself is a great way to be sure you are getting what you need. Shrimp, salmon, egg white/egg salad are all things I enjoy. mom wracking my brain trying to remember 2 days post op. I know I was supposed to drink clear s/f Gatorade or something, but I was so nauseous (even with patches, etc) that I did ice pops, jello, and the next day I was able to graduate to broth, and protein shakes. I stayed on liquids for a long time-maybe 5-6 weeks because I wasn’t hungry, it was the dead of summer, and I didn’t feel like going on to the soft foods phase. Mashed potatoes were great, and I literally could not eat more than a tablespoon before I was full. -
Only you know WHY you made the choices you made. If you don’t know why or are worried you will do it again you may want to consider a bariatric therapist to get to the bottom of things and get some coping tools that keep you from turning to food. I have heard many people on here swear by how much they have helped them. I know that I struggle with emotional eating and I am having a really hard time keeping my weight off (I am a year and a half out). I do not have anyone who specializes in bariatric therapy near me, unfortunately, but really wish I had the option to see someone. You have come so far already. Give yourself every tool available to you to succeed. You can do this.

I am single but live with my elderly mom so I cook some for her. I haven't had my surgery yet but I love Panera Breads tuna sandwich without the bread and it is only 200 calories and 21g protein.

Bloating in Addendum, nausea and feeling full
summerseeker replied to Mebby's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Its early days after surgery and it can be a rough ride for a time. Lots of foods we thought we could eat are definite no-go areas after surgery. We have to just try them again at a later date. I am still struggling to eat cooked salmon. Sometimes my stomach will tolerate it and other times it will throw a tantrum. Your bowel problems will get better as soon as you can eat a full diet again You may need an increase in Nausea meds to see you overnight, I did. I also use a wedge and have thick books under the top of my bed, so I sleep with my head a bit higher. As well as nausea I have GERD in the night. These 3 things have worked wonders for me I hope you get it sorted quickly Are you still on protein shakes? Bloating sounds like an intolerance to an ingredient in it or IBS. Can you speak to your team and see if they can give you some pointers. You are very early in your journey and as we all have been given different diets, we don't know what foods you are allowed -
What made you decide to have a WLS?
AboutDangTime replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been struggling with the decision for about 4 years now. Back and forth on if I want it or not, only because it's a permanent option. That being said, I had a son about a year and a half ago which is my absolute world and I could not imagine a day without him, so I decided to go through with the surgery to help me lose the weight quickly, but give me the tools to keep it off this time, in order for me to be around for a long long time. Now I find out that my wife is pregnant with our next child, so this is perfect timing. -
Terrified and thinking of cancelling
Arabesque replied to Fresh_Basil's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It’s perfectly normal to have some concerns & worries. It is a totally new experience even if you had a band before. But, yeah, stop reading the horror stories they only screw with your head & truthfully they are very rare. People who’ve had a complication often post more because they are seeking help & support. You can find horror stories about anything if you look for them. I’ve a good one about a friend who had a pedicure. I eat out regularly (at real restaurants) & socialise often with friends & family & it doesn't cause me any issues or impact my enjoyment of the occasion. I usually order a main now through while I was losing I ordered entrees. And I’m not afraid to ask to take home the leftovers either. I’ll have a glass of wine or similar when socialising but I take ages to drink it. I don’t enjoy it as much as I did before but that’s me & again it doesn’t stop my friends enjoying several more glasses than me. The short time you have to be the most vigilant & restrictive with your eating & drinking is exactly that - a short time. The staged return to eating is only about 6 weeks in total. After that, you slowly introduce other foods back. Use the time while you are losing to explore new flavours & textures as well as trying healthier food options, cooking styles, recipes, etc. I actually wasn’t really interested in eating anything not nutritionally dense while I was losing & I never felt like I was making sacrifices or giving up any foods. I didn’t want to go back to my old way of eating - it’s why I was obese. But that’s part of the being mentally ready mentioned above. As for dumping, if you do experience it you’ll learn to eat around it. Same with any other idiosyncrasies your body may have post surgery. It’s much like how anyone with an allergy or sensitivity to certain foods or food types acts. Don’t be afraid to question your surgeon further about what you may expect with your surgery. Regardless of whether you decide to go ahead as scheduled or decide to wait a little longer. You have to do what’s right for you. All the best. -
Start by making small changes. Drop one or two of those snacks. Swap out a poor cooking style to a healthier method. Swap out a less nutritious food for a more nutritious one. Check your protein intake & if it’s low, add more protein to your diet. Same with water. Check your portion sizes too. And so on until you are back to eating much like you were when you were close to or at your goal weight. You don’t have to make all the changes at once. Make one change & then in two or so weeks, make another change. Small changes are much easier to cope with & manage.

Terrified and thinking of cancelling
Cpach81 replied to Fresh_Basil's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I get it, major surgery is scary! I think it’s important to examine all the reasons you want to do it. If it’s for a quick fix and quick weight loss to look better, it’s probably not a great idea. If you are tired of being overweight and have health issues that you want to overcome, then this is a great option. I say this because you definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to be successful. This surgery is a tool to help you get healthy, it’s not a permanent fix. You will eventually be able to eat whatever you want again, so it’s up to you to keep with it. As far as dumping, as long as you are following your plan, it shouldn’t be an issue. just my two cents! Good luck with whatever you decide! -
I use Baritastic, but I don't use the recipe function. I just use an existing item that is as close as I think I can get (if I made soup, I search for that kind of soup and find on that looks similar, etc). I figure with as little as I eat, its not going to make a huge difference one way or the other, and the only thing I'm really concerned with is protein so as long as I'm hitting my goal then I don't worry about the rest. That being said, I think the cult classic, and likely most accurate, is MyFitnessPal.

New Job, New Insurance, No More WLS Coverage :(
gojackets replied to SymphonyOfDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm in GA, but am working with Alabama Surgical Associates. https://www.alweightlosscenter.com/payment-options/self-pay-pricing/. I have UHC and our policy doesn't cover any bariatric procedures. So far I had a phone consult with Dr. Doucette. He wants me to lose 30 pounds before surgery - which because of my work schedule should be the end of Dec. I have a weight check in call with the Dr. in 2 weeks. -
New Job, New Insurance, No More WLS Coverage :(
SymphonyOfDreams posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So, my new insurance provider, Cigna, is not covering weight loss surgery--it is excluded for my company's policy with them. I contacted Sage Bariatrics, and self-pay for Gastric Bypass is $15k. I know there is a cheaper option in Mexico (OCC), and have sent them some questions. Can anyone recommend any other center of excellence that might have decent pricing, either in the USA, someplace else in the world? Thanks! -
October 2022 surgery support
JessLosingIt replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am super excited & nervous! 🤩 My surgery is next week on October 12! I am currently on my post-op diet of 4 protein shakes a day & one meal (basically meat & veggies), the day before I can only have 5 protein shakes! Wishing everyone a successful surgery! -
I met with my surgeon a couple weeks ago. I thought I had my mind made up that I was going to do the sleeve but he told me with my hiatal hernia and Gerd that he would only do a gastric bypass. The more I read the posts on here I agree that this is the best option for me. I got my psychologist appt and got some paperwork in the mail to fill out. Many questions about my eating habits. What I eat if I am eating uncontrollably etc. Then in the middle of it a random question if I like to waterski! I laughed out loud! Then later in the questionaire it asked if I like to downhill snow ski at a fast speed. I know they are wondering, if I am a binge eater, bulimic, anorexic etc but what are the speed questions for? Adreline junkie?

Pre-op Diet Gut Rot?
You Are My Sunshine replied to You Are My Sunshine's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hmm. Good thoughts, ladies. It looks like whey protein isolate. I have a few different ones I rotate to keep some variety. A lot of the flavored s/f stuff also has citric acid. I just don't understand how I can be so FULL and so EMPTY at the same time. It's weird. -
Food Before and After Photos
Arabesque replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Made Jamie Oliver’s ricotta fritters & rich tomato sauce yesterday. Of course I made some changes to the sauce like no chilli, added onion & celery & used button mushrooms instead of porcini. Shame is only about 10g of protein. But tasty. The fritters would be good for breakfast with a poached egg. -

What type of protein are you consuming? Whey protein concentrate messes up my tummy. I have to stick with the whey protein isolate. -

I can switch the date with the surgeon's office but I can't change my leave dates at work. I'm using vacation time, not sick leave. I had to request the time off a long time ago. So, unfortunately that's not an option for me.
