    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

Hello. I had the cursed lap band too! It never slipped but I ended up with a hiatal hernia, a gastric polyp, AND my esophagus had begun to dilate. We tried didn't we? Who knew it would be such a better choice to have a large portion of the stomach removed rather than have a tube put around it? The one I was scared most of was the safer choice! I had my sleeve FEB 10TH. I had band removed November 2019 with hiatal hernia repair. That surgery hurt so much worse than this sleeve it's unreal. Fixing the hernia and removing the band required a lot of muscle cutting. So here I am. Lost 16 pounds before surgery (over 4 weeks by 2 weeks eating extremely clean then 2 weeks of required liquids only) I have lost 12 more pounds since surgery morning. 28# total. Wow, being off of sugary foods, sodas, carbs, all of that junk does work! I hope you find yourself much more comfortable after this surgery than your lap band one!! I am tolerating my liquid diet so much better than I did post lap band surgery! Stick to your surgeon's guidelines 100% !! Be true to that 2 week pre op liquid diet! I truly believe it helped my surgery go better! We were a bit worried from scar tissue from lap band so WE ARE MORE LIKELY FOR A LEAK UNLESS WE STICK TO THE RULES ❤❤❤ I know you will have the discipline and you CAN do this because you had to learn discipline with your band. Also, I recommend Collagen Protein (unflavored) for your liquids you do OTHER than your protein drinks. Collagen is very healing and nourishing to skin and hair and helps new cell turnover. Collagen Peptide protein tastes great and mixes easily in a little warm water....then add your milk and some ice. I use ORGAIN brand unflavored. I add to broth, soups, yogurt, pudding, jello. It dissolves well and does not effect flavor at all. GODBLESS (or whoever you belive in) and you are going to be happy! Thank God liquid diet is temporary !!! So excited for you to kick butt !!!!!
  2. I've been married for almost 42 years and my husband was not in favor of either of my surgeries. I had the sleeve in 2014 for obesity (I had a 36 BMI like your wife) and just had a revision to bypass in October 2020. But in both cases, his concern was directly related to his fear that I was doing something drastic and irreversible for weight loss (sleeve) and GERD (bypass). But I can also tell you that he is very happy with the results. Tells the neighbors how great I look etc. He is very supportive of my eating habits and just thankful that I didn't quit cooking meals just because I don't eat them!! The most important thing you can do for your wife is share your concerns but reinforce that it's her decision and you are there for her both before and after surgery.

    No restriction

Thank you! You're the only person that I've heard from that gets it! I have 3 friends that have had gastric bypass and don't understand how I could possibly not have a bit of restriction. Have you been losing the weight this time around without the restriction? I'm losing, but only because I haven't had a carb in 7 weeks! I'm worried about long term...

How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?

Lost 68 in the first 90 and am down 120 today from 8mos ago. Slowed a lot since November but still trending down a couple pounds a week. Seems like a week without losing then two or three days where it’s a pound a day then a week stall. BMI is down to 26 so almost “healthy” starting from BMI 40. Thought my goal of 220lbs was overly optimistic but now I’m thinking 199 is doable. At 213 now (6’4”) and feeling great. “Wish I did this years ago” as many people say.
  5. Hi there, I was also looking at having my sleeve revised to switch, I have GERD and gained a little weight back since my sleeve surgery. But I could only find Mayo Clinic to do a revision, and they will only revise to bypass. Are you having it done for gerd as well? I also have sleep apnea real bad , I want to get away from cpap but need to lose more weight. was your process difficult? Or was Alina willing to work with you? thank you

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

March 3 for me! Just stared the 1 week liquid diet. I had the lap band in as well and am revising to gastric bypass. My doctors program requires a 7 day liquid diet consisting of 4 serving of protein (shakes, creamed soups, and milk as well as unlimited water, sf jello, sf popsicles and broths. Good luck!!!
  7. Hello all! I had gastric sleeve back in 2013. The weight slowly started to creep back on. Then, due to a number of circumstances, it ALL came back. For years I was having terrible heartburn/reflux, so my insurance paid for me to have revision surgery to gastric bypass. I had the surgery 6 weeks ago (Jan 11th). I have never felt any restriction at all! At first I though it was because it was all liquids or mushy food. But for the last 2 weeks I've been eating chicken, crab meat, hamburgers (no bun), etc., and have not had anything that didn't agree with me. I can eat way more than what my list calls for, too. I only stop because I'm not hungry, or I'm tired of chewing. I'm so sad about this. I'm worried that I'm going to fail again. I know I have to be accountable to myself, but if I was good at that I wouldn't have needed surgery... I just had such high hopes that with this tool I would get it right this time.

    February 2021 bypassers?

Had my gastric bypass this morning. My surgeon said they found something very abnormal while in surgery. I am scheduled for an EGD first thing in the morning. All he said was something very abnormal. Wont tell my family, or myself any details. I’m definitely freaking out. I hope it isn’t bad news.

    Revision due to GERD

I couldn't get the revision surgery fast enough! I had reflux since 2010, and had the sleeve done in 2014. Never knew that sleeve surgery can actually make GERD worse. After exhausting every medical option, sleeping in a recliner and constantly coughing from the acid erosion of my throat, I went back to my original surgeon who gave me the LINX or bypass options. I didn't go with LINX because it's only been around for 10 years and bypass (gastrojejunostomy for insurance purposes) is considered the "gold standard" for chronic GERD. After GERD was confirmed by testing (including BRAVO), I had the bypass on 10/29/20. Have not had any reflux since surgery. I struggled through the first 3-4 weeks post op, and I am a "dumper", but I feel great. I've lost 41 pounds since surgery, I'm now in the normal BMI range, dropped from a size 16 to size 10 and have more energy than I did before surgery. I think some of the energy is also because I can finally sleep at night like a normal person: no waking up with a hand/mouth full of stomach acid! I did lots of internet research, including articles in medical journals, and the gastrojejunostomy made the most sense for me. And the weight loss is definitely a bonus!

I got sleeved November 2019 got Pregnant December 2019 gave birth August 2020 during this time I've lost 120lbs. I now want to get skin removal any doctor's you recommend in Arlington/DFW area? Is it worth it to consult right now or wait since it's only been 5.5 months since delivery?
  11. I'm a sleever and most of us don't really dump, but I do notice if I eat more than 200 calories of a sugary treat or simple carb without fiber I feel gross. Not sick like the bypassers, but it's unpleasant enough that when I get offered birthday cake at a party, I'm super careful to keep it extra tiny. 200 calories of sugary crap, I can enjoy once in a while on a special occasion. Any more, and I just want a glass of water and to lie down for half an hour. Have you considered the sleeve? It is much more forgiving with small amounts of really naughty stuff. Also, I have never vomited since being sleeved. I don't think it's impossible, but I have not had the need to.
  12. I will be revising from Lap Band to Bypass soon. I am PETRIFIED of dumping! I have partial dentures and the last thing I need is to puke them into the toilet! Also, I LOVE chocolate and ice cream and would love to eat a mouthful occasionally after maybe 6 months post-op. Also I'd like to know if you have a problem with any fried foods? The only thing I eat now that is fried is an occasional flounder filet. Please tell me at how many months post-op did you re-introduced sugar and fried and what happened. Was the reaction immediately after eating them or delayed? I'm hoping I will be able to tolerate them down the path.... I am also concerned about becoming lactose intolerant...
  13. I had lap band in 2009, it slipped in 2017, and I had it revised to bypass December 2020. I lost 16 pounds in two weeks then nothing for over a month. I worry that our bodies already got used to the lower calorie intake from when we were banded. I also think that is why I gained so much when my band slipped because I was eating “normal” amounts of food, but my body had been set at band amounts for a decade! I’ve finally started losing slowly again in the last week. I too got discouraged reading people’s posts about their significant and quick weight loss, I was starting to feel like a failure. But we each have our own journey and I wish you all the best on yours.
  14. Hi! The vitamins were a bit of a challenge at first for me. I think alot of (but not all) people have this experience?) My prescribed vitamin regimen was as follows: 1x multi tablet (regular size), 3x calcium tablets (horse pill size!) 3x vitamin D tablets (teeny tiny) 1x B12 chew-able (regular size) 1x Iron tablet (regular size) 1x Vitamin A tablet (teeny tiny) The teeny tiny tabs were easy to get down, no issues The regular size tabs were a bit of a challenge. I tried using a pill cutter to make them smaller, but the resulting powder make me gag. Same when I tried crushing them. The horse pill calcium tab was the worst. Actually, I take that back...the chew-able B12 one was the worst. It was like a grape-flavoured chewable Flintstone vitamin and was disgusting to me. Further, the multi and the Iron made me nauseous almost immediately after taking them. I was rarely successful in getting all what i was supposed to the first 1-4 weeks. By month 3-4, after some trial and error, I finally got a regimen down that I was able to sustain: Dropped the iron (my labs showed I didn't need it, plus it was making me sick) Changed the multi to a low iron one (see above) Switched to B12 drops, but then my labs showed I didn't need it so that eventually dropped. Started taking my calcium horse pills with a spoonful of yogurt and that made it much better...but then I discovered Calcium chews and loved them. They were chocolate flavoured and had the consistency of one of those square caramels. Yum. Vitamin A was dropped as didn't need those either. Vitamin D was no change, I had no issues with them from the beginning. I'm 2+ years post op now, and....not advocating this in any way...I pretty much stopped taking all my supplements about a year ago. No real reason other than laziness/boredom. I had satisfactory labs in all my followups up to that point, and had 2 more after that that continued to show I am A-ok. Even my bone density check last November was better than the baseline one I took 2 years ago (which sorta surprised me given all the weight loss as well as my age).

    Esophageal dysmotility

Yes sure does! Bit of a long story but the reason I’m not keen for bypass is I’m wanting to do one last round of IVF and I will have a limited window for that. I’ll just see how we go I guess. Thank you! I hope things work for you too :)

    Esophageal dysmotility

Exact same case as me. Monitor until 6 months, but only real solution is convert to bypass. An hour for meals sounds INSANE, doesn't it? I hope your dysmotility can go away on it's own.

    Esophageal dysmotility

He wants to monitor it for six months in the hope that perhaps the symptoms will improve some and then if not we will do an endoscopy and he will try a balloon dilatation and he said if that all doesn’t work bypass is the only sure fix. He said to take an hour for meals and go really slow. I’m really not keen on having to go to bypass so we shall see hey. Thanks so much for asking!

    65 yr olds with bypass

I am 64 and am in the process of converting from a Lap Band (10-28-08) to a Bypass. The Lap Band was removed the middle of August, the Bypass has now been scheduled for March 9, 2021. Nervous and excited. I lost 160 pounds with the Lap Band, but then started to have issues. I had some fluid removed, but the Band still made it so I couldn't eat vegetables or fruit. Yes, I learned to eat around it! New chapter starts 3-9-21
  19. It sounds like you may have a stricture in your sleeve (makes it hour glass shaped) - did he mention anything like that, as that would show in the barium swallow test? The drugs that you are taking wouldn't help that as they are just to treat the acid overproduction (the pantoprazole and Dexilant) and the resulting insult to the tissue (the sucrafate). From what I have seen over the years (not an MD, just an interested bystander) the problems with the esophagus are likely a result of the stomach problem (assuming that it is a stricture - I have seen such things sited as a result of lap band damage resulting in such symptoms) Strictures of such severity (if indeed that is what it is) were more common several years ago when the sleeve was new and most US bariatric surgeons were just learning how to do them. The stomach, when sleeved, tends to like to bend or twist in the middle if you don't do it just right - it takes practice. These days, I see it discussed more commonly in countries, like Canada and Australia, that were slower to adopt the sleeve, so as a result, their surgeons, as a group, are at about the same place in the learning curve as the US surgeons were 6-10 years ago. Usually, it is treated by a bypass revision as the surgeon won't know how to repair it (if it can be done.) Often, it can be repaired, or resleeved, to correct the problem, But that needs a surgeon who is much more experienced with the sleeve, so if it is possible in your system to get a second opinion on it (particularly from someone more sleeve savvy) that would be the way to go, if for no other reason than to get concurrence with your surgeon's solution (or hopefully, an alternative approach.) Ideally, you would like to find someone who is experienced with the duodenal switch WLS, as that uses the sleeve as its' basis and those surgeons tend to be much more experienced with them than the average bariatric surgeon, but they tend to be few and far between. The only one that I know of in CA is Michel Gagner, who IIRC works out of Montreal. Likely, the RNY revision is the standard of care within the Canadian system (and much of the US as well,) for this type of problem/ Good luck,

    Any March Surgeries?

I am having bypass on 3/31 anyone else?
  21. JRL1989

    Esophageal dysmotility

I got sleeve Oct 15/20, and developed GERD almost immediately after. I have trouble swallowing things now too - my surgeon thinks its because of the GERD and acid and irritating my esophagus. At 1 month post-op, I had a barium swallow done, and the report indicated esophageal dysmotility and "tertiary contractions". My surgeon is sending me for an esophageal motility test (esophageal manometry) next week. He wants to convert me to bypass at the 6 month mark because of this.

    Name of insurance claim

I was approved a d have Cigna. Can someone share when they file the claim is it listed as b bypass surgery on the insurance claim?
  23. I started in November and had to do 12 weeks of weigh-ins. It depends on your doctor's office but mine were all virtual. The doctor started on a program with re-shape where I had a virtual coach visit every week but then towards the end, Aetna stopped covering it so the doctor's office would just call me and I would give them how much I weighed over the phone. Just make sure you do not gain any weight because Aetna will deny you if you gain weight.

    Calling all fellow Aussies!!

Also a fellow Aussie here from Nsw. I had the sleeve in 2017 but due to GERD and weight regain have had revision to bypass in dec 2020. I have zero regrets about my decision to have the revision, and since December have lost 20kg. (40kg from highest weight in 2017) All the best for your journey !
