First Post-Eating After Surgery
Apple1 replied to lovedrotten's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You were vague about what she is actually eating, regular foods encompasses everything.. I would be concerned about causing complications as well as sabotaging any chance that she will benefit from the surgery and lose weight. Is she meeting her protein and water goals? Is she at the very least choosing healthy foods? I think you need to discuss this with her doctor or nut. -

Anyone regret revising to VSG vs revising to RNY?
adorkbl posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My band was removed 2 years ago after 7 years of issues and complications. I always planned on revising to VSG at some point. Now that the time has come, I am not sure if that is the right choice. Several of my band friends have revised to VSG and the feedback has been less that stellar, with one friend actually telling me she wouldn't do it. I have two friends that have had the RNY and have had good success. But neither of them are a revision. I have a sweet tooth. I have PCOS. I developed GERD with the band. I have 230 pounds to lose. All reasons to lean towards RNY. I am just more comfortable with VSG for some reason. RNY still scares the bejeezes out of me. But I don't want to make another colossal mistake like I did with the band. I am concerned that the scarring from the band will affect results with the VSG. My surgeon recommends RNY for me. Anyway, long post to basically ask: Do you regret revising to VSG and wish you had done RNY? Your reasons? If you are happy with your revision to VSG, did scarring from the band affect your new journey? Sent from my Samsung S6 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Last Pre-Op visit with my surgeon! What to ask?
TippyToesX replied to TippyToesX's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The questions I have so far: - Will I have a drain tube? - Will I have a private room after surgery? - Will I have a catheter? - How long will I be in the hospital (as long as there are no complications)? - Pain meds? Nausea meds? - How long should I be out of work? - Post-Op vitamins? - My goal weight... Is 140 lbs too low for me? -
Hi all! So I had my RNY on Tuesday & I want to tell my experience so far! I arrived at the hospital around 8:00 Tuesday morning & got all signed in. When they took me back to the pre-op area I was surprisingly calm. I think I felt this way because after 10 years of battling my weight, I know that this was it. I was finally going to be given the tools to be successful. No more exercising and dieting and not losing weight! My pulse was high for like 2 minutes only because they decided to take it when I got my Iv in, and IV needles freak me out haha. My family was brought back (mom, dad, boyfriend and 6 year old wild child brother). After waiting for about an hour and a half, the anesthesiologist came back and asked me Health-related questions. He examined my airway & assured me that I had very low risks for complications. Then my surgeon came back and introduced himself to my family. The surgery he performed ahead of me took longer than anticipated so mine was pushed back about 30 minutes. My mom, dad and brother went out to the waiting room while my boyfriend stayed until it was time for me to go back for surgery. The nurses came back and gave me my "cocktail" & then wheeled me back to the OR. While I was waiting in the hallway to go to the OR the cocktail hit & I started laughing because it felt like I had drank 2 bottles of wine [emoji23] I was taken into the OR & had to move to the operating bed. The last thing I remember was them strapping my arms down & then waking up in recovery (I thought I was up immediately but apparently I was sleeping for about 2 hours). When I woke up, my face was itching like crazy & the nurse told me I was probably having a reaction to the narcotics. She gave me Benedryl & within a minute I was fine. I was taken up to my room where I slept on and off all night. It was weird because I was never in a deep sleep the entire time, so I could hear every conversation going on around me but I couldn't open my eyes haha. I wasn't in any pain at all the first day. The next day I had a few friends and family members visit. I had to pump myself up for getting my catheter removed. For some reason I was more scared of that than I was of the actual surgery. But it didn't hurt at all. They stopped my pain pump & had me walk laps all day. The gas pain was building as the day went on (seriously I read so much about the gas pain but nothing could have prepared me for it!) I was only nauseous 3 times: the first 2 times I walked & then when I took my liquid pain meds and wasn't sitting up completely. But the nausea lasted 20 seconds and then I was fine. The nurses told me I was a champ because I was handling recovery so well and walked way more than was expected of me. I got to go home Thursday & so far it's been a lot easier than I thought it would be. Getting water in is really hard because my pouch is still so swollen & I'm full after a few sips. I sleep about 11 hours at night & take a nap during the day. Really the hardest part for me is getting out of bed [emoji23] it feels like I did ab day at the gym every day for a week. But other than that I think I lucked out. I blame it on my age & the fact that obesity is my only health issue.

Info on a new weight loss challenge
Dashofpixiedust8 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey guys! So I love running these challenges and I will be starting a new one for summer BUT I am not sure when that will be! I am having my panniculectomy surgery on MONDAY!! TWO days away! I'm honestly very nervous as they gave me an over 50% chance of wound complication rate in combination with my track record of doing terrible after surgery. So once I feel well enough to host a challenge I will post a new one! Hopefully it is not too long! Thanks all of you for participating all these weeks!! I've really enjoyed doing these challenges with you! -
How many calories per day is your pre-op diet?
KateBruin replied to greensleeves's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's a complicated question. Im 5'6" and currently 240 but I probably look under 200 lbs. Doctors are usually shocked at my weight. Goal weight is probably between 160-180 but I won't know until I see how the weight looks. I'm thinking more about goal appearance than goal weight. At 140 I'm a size 0/2 due to muscle mass and build. -
Hello I would reschedule Your tattoo appointment because everyone heals different and you need to rest and make sure you are well enough before doing anything else and also you don't want to risk getting a bad infection if any complication. Of course you must make the best decision but I would take it one step at a time. You can always get it another time. 😊. Best of luck

Hello everyone Many have read my post about my weight loss journey and complications. I have had 5 bowel obstructions in a year which had Surgury and 5 endoscopy dilation. At this present time I am in the hospital and had to be put back on TPN which I will continue at home for a while. Reason I came to hospital is that last week I started vomiting fluids and couldn't keep anything down. I started drinking ensure and it made it worse. Now they have done a few studies in which Monday is a important study that I am having which I will be drinking barian to see an area where they see something in my small intestine. They believe that a part of my small intestine is not working at all and may need to be removed. I have lost so much weight and weight 90 pounds more than I am suppose to be. At this time doctor is saying my body need to gain some weight in order to do Surgury. The upper gi test shows that the dye passes by all the way down but stuck in a small area for hours when it should go completed through. Have any one heard of or experience Roux Stasis Syndrome? I am very concern and nervous.

No Negative Comments! Did anyone cheat during Pre op
utailgator replied to Misha42000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I cheated, the Dr had me start my liquid diet 2 1/2 weeks before surgery because I had gained 30 pounds waiting for my insurance approval. I was good for almost a week then I had a burrito one day, then cheeseburger macaroni the next 2 days but then I was good for another week then I had 12 pieces of chicken 2 nights before my surgery. I guess I was lucky, I didn't have any complications during surgery or after. My surgery date was 11/21 and I lost 185 pounds so far and have about 120 to go. If you do cheat move on and don't beat yourself up over it. -
Guy...54...low BMI and already active to start...unusual experiences

Nice honest story. Thanks for sharing. Broads on YouTube like to be dramatic for views. Period. Plus a lot of them are straight nuts. If you watch enough of their videos it is easy to figure out. Men have a stigma attached to looking weak, women don't. They whine and cry on YouTube and people baby them. The same thing happens here, people mess up and make themselves miserable with dumb choices and want other people to coddle them. I don't have a YouTube channel but I have a high pain tolerance. I had a baby, no pain meds, 10 pushes, no screaming (I wanted my baby born into a calm environment). I had VSG surgery, stopped taking pain meds as soon as I got home 28 hours later. Drove my car on day 3. Did everything for myself because I live alone. I had no complications, little pain (it just felt like I did 1000 crunches, I used to do 1000 crunches a day in HS so I know the feeling), and I was back to my regular life fairly rapidly. People that are happy and have few issues don't usually shout it, because no one cares and it also seems like you are bragging and rubbing it in to the people that are miserable. So the miserable people have the floor. I think you are going to do great long term. If you aren't already seeing a therapist you probably should. You might have an identity crisis once you aren't a Bear anymore and you have to figure out where you fit in your world after knowing your place for so long. BTW the Bears are my favorite -
Self pay what happens if complication
GassyGurl replied to sunshinegal22's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Blue Cross federal will not deny complications. It doesn't matter where the surgery was done, or how it was paid for, they will treat it like any other claim. At least that's what they told me via a secure message. If you're thinking of traveling for surgery, you can get post op insurance. I think it's based on a time frame and dollar amount. For example, 300k for 30 days might be $500. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -

No Negative Comments! Did anyone cheat during Pre op
Joann454 replied to Misha42000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're not the only one who has cheated. I've read stories. You have to keep in mind that your liver might be enlarged and that would make surgery harder. You have to try to do all you can to prevent complications. I know it's hard. I suffered through it too. It felt good to step on the scale pre surgery 15lbs lighter though. Eye on the prize. -
Yeah, my wife is a professor and lives and dies by data. I know this logically but pre surgery I think I was looking for an out (wrapped up in the reason of being fully informed) and I sought out complications. I started to convince myself that I'd be the anomaly, I mean, someone has to be, right? She talked me off the edge and I'm so glad. Data and logic goes out the window if you're petrified.

stories
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Deactivatedfatgal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stories from one individual are merely anecdotal. As far as anecdotal evidence goes, a more accurate presentation of surgery complications comes from health experts (doctors/surgeons/etc) who've performed surgeries, revisions, or dealt with post-op complications. With the slew of people you're bound to meet, ask questions and document answers to go back to in situations of anxiety. And the best evidence are studies where they either access large swaths of people by getting consent for their information, so direct studies, and/or accumulating non-personal data from doctors who input general data into a collective system for analysis. That's why before I had the surgery done I made sure to talk to as many people as I could (particularly specialists who've dealt with bariatric surgery scenarios and those with specific diseases/comorbidities that cater to their specialty) and ask as many questions as possible, read as many studies as possible to get a sense of what is normal, what to expect, what the clinical odds of things happening are.. so I would have a direct source of information that didn't come from internet gossip. I am a hypochondriac as well, and if I didn't keep myself away from these stories, I'd have gone nuts and likely affected my ability to get the surgery. -

What defines a good surgeon?
Pam_2-06-2017 replied to njgal's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I started by finding a "Center of Excellence" I wrote down a list of complications that concerned me and asked the surgeon straight up his stats on said complications (leaks, death, etc). Not only was he not offended (important) he was quick to answer and confident to explain. I liked that. I also read any reviews online and if one concerned me I also asked the surgeon regarding that review. If at anytime he minimized my concerns or made me feel stupid to ask any question, I would have booted him to the curb. Remember not to confuse minimize with confidence, there is a big difference. You need him/her to be on board with you from the very beginning. You also need someone who will talk to you like a person and not an underling that he/she doesn't have time for. I talked to one surgeon at a Center of Excellence in San Antonio and never went back. You do have a choice. -
Well, you need to find a supportive shrink. GERD is 20% in the normal population and 10% in sleevers. Don't stress about it. Even if it is going to happen to you, worrying about it won't stop it, it will just make the situation worse. Focus on losing weight and being healthy. When people look at complication data, they forget that a lot of people were in terrible general health before they ever had surgery. So since we have started down this path... I'm looking at their blog http://suethsayings.blogspot.com/ This is what they have to say about the sleeve... Really? because it is 5:30 PM and I have had 2 eggs, bacon, 32 ounces of coffee 32 ounces of iced tea, 32 ounce of water, and 12 ounces of pork. My sleeve holds a lot. I'm about to suck down 100 grams (2 cups) of spinach. I still have 2 hours left to eat and I plan on doing some damage, LOL They are completely ignoring ghrelin, but from the entire tone of their blog, they don't even research actual studies or science about surgery, claiming there is zero research. @Deactivatedfatgal The person running that site and blog is bitter and deranged. I had a friend from college, that had RNY back in the early 2000s. She had complications and ended up on a feeding tube. That sounds like a tragic story right? The part left out is 2 days after she was home she was drinking Coke (not even diet) and eating KFC (just a pinch to see if I can tolerate it she said). Her complications were brought on by herself. Not to mention she was not heavy enough to qualify for surgery and wore ankle and arm weights under her clothes to make her BMI high enough, Lots of people are not good cadidates for surgery but they don't tell that part of the story. You can notice even around here when people say they regained, they NEVER tell exactly what they were eating and in what amounts. They keep it vague and say they were eating bad. If you were tracking their food and looking at their binges in print, they would be less likely to do that, but that isn't what happens. So when people tell their WLS tales of woe, remember that there is more to the story.
