Naked and Afraid
lizonaplane replied to The Hacker's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's normal to be scared. I agree, lapband is not a great surgery. Bypass has the best stats as far as reversing diabetes. I generally like the idea of following your surgeon's advice or getting a second opinion if you're still not sure. -
I announced on Facebook today that I am planning on having gastric bypass. I am an honest person, and transparent as far as my thoughts and feelings, so I wanted everyone to know what was happening before I started losing massive amounts of weight. Everyone has been very supportive in their responses thus far but it has left me feeling exposed and vulnerable. Bring on the anxiety. On a positive note, I've lost 2 more pounds and have gone down 2 pant sizes since starting this journey. [emoji1373]

Hi everyone, I hope im doing this right. I've decided to join and get some support. I had lapband surgery on 4-18,and I have lost 11 pounds since the surgery. I started with a physician (not the surgeon) weight loss program for three months as directed by my insurance company. I lost about 10 pounds on it. After the three months, I went to see the surgeon, Dr. John Baker, prior to my surgery date. He put me on protein shakes for two weeks prior to the surgery and I lost 15 pounds. The day befor surgery, I did clear liquids and lost a few more pounds, so i'm looking at about a 30 lb loss since February. It was recommended that I have gastric bypass for the amount of weight I have to lose, but I was totally against it. These past 12 days have been interesting. My core has been especially tender, but im walking 40 minutes per day as the doctor instructed. I am on sugar free, fat free full liquids. On Thursday I can advance to soft diet and I am excited. I am almost ready to come off of my BP meds ALREADY!!!!!!

I'm getting so Scared......
VSGirl replied to Itsmytime2011's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was a big worrier my biggest fear what if something went wrong. I went back over the pro and con list I made to once again remind myself why I need to lose my weight. I questioned why I was scared or what was the real reason I was scared/worried. I question one of my biggest worry, death. Why was I afraid I might die? For me I question the trust of my surgeon. I took a deep look at why I was worried about the surgery itself and looked at the reality of my worries. I looked at the fact my surgeon was a stranger, I looked at if he was experienced enough, I looked at the trust I had for my doctor and staff. I found that my fears were unfounded. Yes, there are concerns for anyone going under the knife, but when looking at the low complication rate and trusting your skilled surgeon is the key. For me, I couldn’t trust my surgeon. My head and my heart said I should rethink my surgery so that’s what I did. I researched the operation compared to others (I’m glad I did I was schedule 3 days later for Gastric bypass but I changed to a VSG, thank goodness I did the research), complication rate, hospital standards, and most importantly, the doctors background (success rate, complication, or malpractice). Once all my concerns where answered, I prepared for my surgery using positive talk and meditation by thinking of the weight I would lose and the health I will get back. To help me through the stressful period, I downloaded some free meditation audio files and listen to them. Here is a link to Kaiser Permeate Guided imagery programs that really helped me. Download the one for surgery and take it with you to listen on your mp3 player. Your probably don’t need it, but good luck on your surgery. https://members.kaiserpermanente.org/redirects/listen/ -
Hello Pat! Your story sounds so much like mine---almost identical! I to have lost a lot of weight and gained it back pretty quickly because I never totally stuck anything. My last attempt also being weight watchers. I am currently waiting for approval for surgery but losing weight by eating low carb (I have done this before and it really worked---just another thing I didn't stick it out). My bff's sister and one of her friends both had gastric bypass and have had severe complications (one is now 98 pounds and on a feeding tube and in a wheelchair and the other has had 2 other surgeries because of complications and she just got RnY in Sept '07) I have made up my mind that I am not going to let food control my life---not one more day! On 6/16/08 I had enough and took control and started exercising and watching what I eat. I have lost almost 20 pounds and even though the past 2 weeks I haven't really seen a loss, its not going to stop me. I will do it this time WITH or WITHOUT the band. My biggest problem is that when I get off of a diet its all or nothing...and mostly its ALL, which has caused me to gain it all back everytime. I think if I am banded it will prevent me the big binge eating that I have done in the past. I wish you the best, keep hanging out here and you will learn so much from everyone---the good and the bad. I have made some good friends on here and have learned so much about being banded.

Hello out there.. This is my first post as I am now waiting for my LapBand which is sked for the 13th of October. I am a disabled vet after having lost a battle with gravity in my helicopter and compressing 7 vertebrae in my lower back. My orthopedist kept telling me to get this surgery and I finally came to grips with the thought that I won't ever be able to break the holy trinity of Pain, Excercise and Weight Loss. If it weren't for one thing, another may rear its head, or another or...I am sure many of you are in the same sitch. My wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Oct 04 and had a pretty rough go post operative with the initial removal and Tram Flap repair done that turned into a MRSA infection in the mesh and .....4 surgeries-4 years and 120 pounds later (thanks to Tamoxifen, Sleep Apnea, Hyper, etc.. comorbidity hell) she will be getting a bypass, perhaps sleeve depending on what they find... She is scheduled for Sept 29, and although they told me that they can schedule me first, I want to be sure that she goes first in case something bad happens to me and I would preclude her from her little hospital stay and recovery time. My band is scheduled for the 13th, and being a tad superstitious if it would have been a Friday I would have had to let it slip another few days or so... Sorry for deviating from the intro- If anybody has a pain pump installed any advice if required would be appreciated, same with those taking Warfarin. So, can anyone tell me what the diff is between the Realize and LapBand are, 'cept for the electronic links? I know the band is different itself but is there any proven studies documenting one being substantially better than the other? Don't know if this is the place to ask ?'s re the pre-surgical Atkins Diet- Back to intro- started the paperwork in early May, met with the Nutrition folks in mid-May, received my authority on August 1st and will get my final Eval in a week or so... Dr. Landerholm (Edmonds, WA)will be doing the procedure up here North of Seattle. I will learn where to appropriately ask questions about the LapBand and a pain-pump and living with Warfarin.....Any directions on where to go for these issues would be greatly appreciated- Hope to learn from you all- Thanx in Advance! Matt

Seriously, I just KICKED the top stair on my staircase. I am sitting here with ice on my damn toe thinking thoughts that are a bit more crude than OUCH. Today was a loooong freakin day. I wasnt even thru the door at work, my time card not even swiped yet when it began... "Tomorrow:bounce:are you excited???" I give up. Then our computers go down at 7:05 am. So, I clean out my desk and bring my uneaten and not liked protein bars to a coworker 3 offices away and get stuck for 40 minutes or so explaining the lap band and how it isnt the gastric bypass. I am explaining this to 2 skinny chicks that I'd really just rather kick. The day drags on and then its lunchtime. It begins again. One full hour of not being able to enjoy my last salad and orange for a long while. Now, I know that this is all my own fault. If I had kept to my plan of not saying anything to anyone, I wouldnt have to defend/explain myself daily. But, I have a big yap. Besides, after the failed attempt at banding in November, everyone knew. So, after 5 million hugs and pats on the back, I got to go home. I am 14 hours away from sliding in to the hospital and 15.5 hours away from la-la land as the doctors once again attempt to band my stomach. Now if only we could band my rampant thoughts. I have come to realize that no matter how much weight I lose, I will always be the fat girl. I have the "good personality." Someone told me that today... "you have such a good personality." Screw you. I developed this so called good personality because I was fat. I have told my husband that I am so tired of being nice to people. Especially people who dont deserve nice. There is this one person in my life that is driving me insane. She downs me daily for doing this yet she bitches constantly about the weight she has gained and how she cant lose it... blah, blah, blah. Serious verbal diarrhea from her. I consider the source but I just want to yell BACK OFF BITCH. I dont. I am NICE. I may stop being nice someday but for now, I suck it up. I'd like to think that she is experiencing jealousy but I dunno. Jealousy is an odd thing. Today, (everyone had words of wisdom) I was told that I will know when I have acheived success because other women will be rude to me. I'm thinking other women are already rude to me. Only now I hear fat bitch and later I will hear skinny bitch. Whatever. I am off to eat my last ever kit kat as I have convinced myself that I can never have another one. That's not such a bad mind game to play with myself...

Jan... I used to believe that hair loss was due to Protein issues. I don't believe that anymore. My labs have been perfect regarding protein issues and I have lost a LOT of hair. I think it is either oils or Vitamins. I'm currently trying six children's vitamins daily. That is three adult doses. I take them throughout the day, not all at once. I'm going to see if that helps any. If it makes a difference, hair loss happens in bypass farrrrr more than banded people. Most banded people I know that are losing hair lost weight quickly. We'll see if extra vitamins help any.

Head Hunger vs Stomach Hunger???!!!!
BRAY replied to lorena090's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 12 days out from full bypass. I feel great, just twinges at incesion sites. 2 moments of giving in to stupidity, one having some Chicken and Rice’s soup w saltines , I had intense stomach cramps for about 2 hours and gas. Of course I did not learn my lesson the other yesterday out of town -
hi, i'm brand spankin' new to the forum, yaaay me, lol, i have tons of questions just like any newbie, i'm getting banded ( am i using the correct lingo? lol) on july 24. ok anyways so i have to start my pre op diet on thursday, and i'm trying to slowly start into it now...so that i don't have some psycho pizza craving thursday night...ok now my question(s) my doctors office recommended myocel to use as a protien supplement/shake thing...sounds delicious! but i'm wondering if i could just use like a high protien slim fast or Optifast...you know something already premade? and i'll contact the office later but for those who did a pre op diet, is it just sticking to a low carb diet? and by low carb does it work the same way as atkins like i could have low carb tortillas because you subtract the grams of Fiber, etc....or is is seriously strict like nothing that even looks like bread, lol so here's my story. ok well anyways i'm totally excited about getting banded! i have been sooooo opposed to weight loss surgery, i was so active in my teens and early 20's i was just like oh i need to eat less, and exercise more...yeah i'd lose 40 gain 60, lose 20 gain 30, thats' the story of my life...i was sooo patient...but how many times can i bust my butt at the gym for a week lose 2 lbs, only to gain it back on one bad weekend...i believe that weight loss should be slow, but dang why does weight gain have to happen so fast!!! so now at a lovely 285-290 lbs and umphteen million diet tries and failures over the years....i think the band is just what i need...i know the weight loss is slow, i'm sick of being "fat" just as much as the next person, so yeah i thought about gastric bypass, um yeah for like 2 seconds i'm like, cutting what? putting what where? yeah the gastric bypass people will look awesome for the xmas party, ...but i'm not looking at where i'll be in december, i'm thinking wow, imagine where i'll be next july! holy cow! i'll be on a lap band commercial, and wearing shorts on spring break! ok expect many more super cool post from me! hmmm now to find a nice little tracking/ticker thingy thanks guys! nic

Is there anyone from UK
craftycaz replied to craftycaz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have other medical problems, and long term it was cheaper to do the surgery than treat the other bits if that makes sense. I had a chat with the surgeon and had to convince him to do the sleeve rather than the bypass. I need to have my gallbladder removed and if he done the bypass then it could not be done with keyhole. I suppose I am excited and nervous at the same time, only because it's all happening so fast. -
I just wish that I could clone my PCP he is the best thing since..........oh well you all get my meaning. I went to see him yesterday for other issues and I was telling him how if my insurance ever decided to pay for wls I was going to have the banding done. He gave me a big hug and a kiss on the forehead and said that he thought it was the best decision I could ever do. He said that he is so glad insurance is fineally paying for something other then bypass. He has the same feeling about the later outcomes of bypass surgeries. Some people have no issues and more people have major ones. He said that he had recently been researching it for another patient and had no clue that was something I was already looking into. So with that stated....I do have to apologize for how you were treated(seem to do that alot to patients cuz some drs left their mannors in the toilet when they got up that morning) but remember there are a whole lot of great family physicians that will support you through it all. Keep up the great work with the weight loss.

Maybe she was mad at herself for referring patients for gastric bypass when she could have sent them to get a band. Or maybe she was mad that her insurance won't cover a band for herself.
-
Well, I think it depends on what you're exactly looking for...Personally, I'm leaning towards the band (ins pays for both, but I'm praying for band approval). I'm 35 years old (bmi 45.5) and looking to POSSIBLY have one more child. The research I've seen on line stated that there's LESS likelyhood of a problem pregnancy w/the band since it can be adjusted for the nutritional needs of the mom and fetus. Also, since the weight loss isn't as fast as w/the bypass, I'm hoping less chance of loose skin too. I also know it's less envasive and less time I have to recover. I have 3 year old that I can't keep up with now, plus being out of commission for a 4-6 weeks +, I can't really have that. :preggers:

? Almost done my classes will i need extra studies ?
Lily22 replied to Lily22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Joy59. I have done the Psyc. Eval and have seen the nutritionist twice. I have the nutrition group meeting at the end of this month and then the medical group meeting talking about all the procedures beginning of next month. I already seen the Doctor in charge at the weight center and was told that she has no concerns on me continuing for the bypass and that the surgeon will speak to me at a later date about his recommendations for which surgery he feels may be right for me. I was only told to have blood work and to begin on a birth control to help regulate my cycle. But nothing else since. I have lost some weight since beginning the steps toward WLS. But that's it. I hope im close to the end and not that I still have tests and stuff to go. -
No pre-op diet
travelinsnorkel replied to cinnamongirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I just had my second fill and finally have some good restriction. It is a longer process than bypass I think, but it definitely has been worth it! I'm off BP meds, lower blood sugar, and feeling a lot better! -
Worried It Will Effect My Life In A "negative" Way.
stateofzen replied to dimplzjs's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It is a change, but it's not the drastic change you may fear. I really dreaded giving up soda because I used to drink so much of it, but I can honestly say I don't miss it at ALL. I drink wine, and I have dinner parties. Although I don't drink other beverages while eating, I will drink wine while I eat. I go out to eat with friends. The difference is, I keep my portions small and I make good choices. For example, at my last dinner party, I made a baked eggplant parm that was super healthy and low-fat and a homemade salad dressing that was no-sugar and low fat and NO ONE knew but me. The fact is, though, that we have to make changes and there is mourning involved for some of them. If you want to keep living the exact life you live now, then the band won't work (and neither will bypass or sleeve, for that matter). All of them require a commitment to do your part. Good luck in your decision! -
More support can't hurt!
elli'smommy replied to elli'smommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Truly, not very long. But, I have a lap-band that was ruptured during a fill. So after a failed four year stent w the band I seen a new Bariatric doc and discussed removing the band. He suggested rny. That was in December. I drug my feet for a while and did some research and soul searching. Then seen the doc again in Late march. Paperwork was submitted in April and approved a week later. I had to attend a revision class. A week later after that I had my may 10 & 14 appts. If all goes well, ill have a surgery date by the end of may or early June. So I started attending the support groups last night. I'm seeing the dietician next week as well. Moving right along! -
Ok, I have been dealing with my weight for the last past eight years. 2 years and 28lbs ago I attended the seminar for gastric bypass. At the time I felt that the procedure was a little to drastic for me and never pursued it any further. I am starting to have soooo many issues surrounding my weight like sleep apnea, acid reflux, and recent knee issues. The acknowledgement of being tired and short breath all the time has encouraged me get back to trying to loose the weight on my own. I am now looking for alternatives so this disease doesn’t get the best of me. I am currently 5'0 and 228lbs. After reading information on the lap band, I am thinking this is the route for me. I welcome any advice from anyone who is willing to share. I will keep you guys updated in my progress.

It's nice to have you here April. I had a revision from Lap Band to sleeve about 6 days ago. The members of this forum are awesome and very supportive. They are also full of wonderful information from someone who has been there done that. Best of luck to you!

How/Why did you choose Lap Band?
Shazam replied to josiek1988's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I choose the lap band because it is not permanent. Also, loosing 1-2 pounds is more realistic for losing weight. I also know individuals who have had bypass, sleeve, and band. Most have gained weight back - because they did not change or learn new eating habits. Any type of WLS is a tool to get there. And yes with the sleeve or bypass you loose extremely fast, but it seems to me, it's too fast. You need time to adjust your eating habits. It seems to me, no one goes from eating terribly to healthy overnight. These are learned new habits. Choosing fish over beef. Choosing a salad instead of Cookies. Eating less carbs. Also, you need to exercise, everyday. See, at least it seems to me, many individuals think any type if WLS is a presto magic thing, and you don't need to change your eating/drinking habits. Or heck, even. Exercise. There are so many who think having the surgery, and sit back, change nothing, and they will be thin. Sadly, that is not true. Doctors inform you what you can and cannot eat or drink. Yet, many make excuses, or dabble where they shouldn't. Then they are complaining, or should I say, questioning why they are gaining weight from drinking milkshakes, any drink ending in -chino, or eating things they shouldn't. The habits you learn when you begin your journey with, are habits which are to be life long. Period. For me, personally, I no longer drink caffeine, carbonated, diet anything. Simply for the reason it's just not good for you. What do I drink. Water and Protein shakes. That's it. I attempted to drink a diet tea, and it was horrible. I guess being away from it for so long, I realized how nasty that stuff is. And so you know, i am not saying all of this because I'm perfect with my habits. I can proudly say, I've not regained any weight. I have my demons, but I also know what I can and cannot do. I hope this helps. -
I am just starting this process, with my visit to the dietician next Friday 6/13/14. While at church on Sunday, I was talking to a friend who had bypass 4 years ago. I was telling her that I had decided to go with the Lap Band. She immediately began telling me that it was a bad choice. She was telling me that I was too big and that I wouldn't loose enough weight. I tried explaining to her that I wasn't looking for the quick fix. I am looking for a lifestyle change. She continued telling me about people she knew and their horror stories. I had to take some time to really think about what she said. Then I thought, to ask you all! Please help!!

Tips for Stopping Caffiene

Hi, New to the site with lots of ?'s......
Kat817 replied to Minnesotalady's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know if you watched the Oprah show on GB and addiction a couple of weeks ago, it may have explained some of your sisters issues. I feel the lap band reduces the odds, but does not eliminate them. The problem as I understood it is that one of the reasons we are as overweight as we are is a food addiction. Now if you have an addictive personality, then when you canno longer use food to soothe the demons that led to the addiction, then many turn to alcohol, or whatever and simply change the addiction. I have no idea concerning the divorce, except losing weight finally after many tries, as most of us have gone through, is very free-ing. It empowers you to make changes you had only thought about before. Not knowing why she is doing these things, I would hate to judge any of it. Lap band is less drastic, and not such a sudden loss. It does require more work. But in my opinion it works for me because there is not anything I cannot have at least a little bit of. I was told with bypass sweets were not something I could eat, and I don't do well being told I can't have something, it just makes me want it more!!! Now I can eat some without going overboard. Are you close enough to your sister to discuss these things with her? Go to the seminar, and research all you can!!! This has been a blessing to me, I hope you find the answers you are looking for!!!
