I'm still on the liquid diet. Saw my surgeon today. He's pleased with my progress but no pureed food till the 19th. Besides the shakes, jello, broth and Popsicles, I also have protein 20 water and Gatorade with protein.

I had my surgery October 5th. I’m tired hungry and very weak all the time. I’ve been doing protein shakes and other liquids is there anything that I can do or is anyone else’s post op diet different from mine?

October 2022 surgery support
raspberrylime replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Tomorrow is my surgery day and I am only allowed clear liquids today. I haven't really felt hunger during the liquid diet until today. Doesn't matter how many sugar free popsicles I eat, bottles of water I drink, or cups of broth I sip. I never thought I'd crave a protein drink but here I am wishing I could drink a chocolate fairlife 😅 Trying to stay positive and keep my hands and mind busy. Journaling to remind myself why I'm doing this in the first place. Good luck to everyone who is also scheduled for tomorrow! -
It's normal, and it'll eventually slow down and then stop. Takes several months, but it'll happen. Make sure you eat plenty of protein, take biotin (helps with the hair you have, won't make it regrow or not fall out) and I make sure to treat my hair with hair masks and whatnot. Helps me feel better and I know it helps the hair I still have look better. Keep what you have nice and healthy and when you stop losing it, you'll look and feel great. Also, I had hair down to my butt and when it started coming out a lot, I cut it to just above my shoulders. Helped SO much with looking thin. I also use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, which also helps. Just hang in there, it'll be over soon. It's all for a good cause.

Every hour to eat seems excessive. I was told to drink every 30-45 minutes and eat a small meal every 3 hours 4-5x per day. Now I eat 3 small meals and a snack at night and I'm good. Also, at this stage you can also add a protein shake which will give you protein to help with that goal, fluids for that goal, and some extra calories (not a lot, but like 110 or 130 or something). I can't stand plain water, so I bought the water flavorings (Walmart has em) with no sugar and no calories or carbs, and let me tell you...they help SO much. I bought Propel flavored water and protein gatorade zero (no sugar but has protein in it). I also drink tea (sweetened and flavored with Jordan's skinny syrup with no sugar, no calories, no carbs, delicious taste). I don't drink caffeine anymore, but when I was coming off it, I drank tea with caffeine. Now I just drink regular tea (or herbal tea, depending on my mood).

Nausea and Taste issues
summerseeker replied to Young 69 yrs's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I remember that horrid taste. I just couldn't clean my teeth enough in a day. The taste in my mouth really gave me an aversion to eating some foods. When I could eat a better range of foods it got better. Are you on nausea meds? they really make my life better. I take them twice a day. I was miserable till I got the dose right. I also had to drop the iron from my multivitamin to stop nausea If you are struggling to eat, go back to your team and ask if you can maybe have 5 or 6 tiny meals instead or 3 bigger ones. You will be loads better real soon. People who say this is an easy option to weight loss just do not have a clue how hard we work to get healthy -
Ok, I can speak on this since I literally went through this exact thing. First of all, you are in a stall. The first one usually hits around 3 weeks, but it can be a little earlier (like it was for me) or a little later. Keep eating what's in the plan, no more and no less, and get your walking in (maybe look into getting some ankle and wrist weights). That leads me to my 2nd point. Look for non scale victories. Anytime I hit a stall, I started trying on clothes and rings and looking at my neck and face and chin. The scale may not be moving, but that doesn't mean things aren't happening. The first time I was able to sit in a booth and there was space between my stomach and the table, I was elated. When my clothes were literally falling off me and my ring came off twice, I was ecstatic. Just because the scale is being stubborn doesn't mean progress isn't being made. Third, you have to eat. This will sound crazy, but if you restrict too much, your body will think it's starving and it will hold on to every little bit of weight it can. My dietician wanted me to stay at 700-800 calories per day, 50 or less carbs, 50 or less fats, and 60-80g protein. My body didn't like that at all. Not one bit. I hit stall after stall, would drop maybe 1 or 2 pounds, then nothing. I started experimenting and found that between 1050 - 1200 calories per day, 25-35 carbs per day, 70-90 fats per day, and 90-95g protein per day was where my body was happiest. I work out for 45 min - 1 hour 5 days per week. And then I started seeing MUCH better results, both on and off the scale. Now, I'm not saying that works for everyone, and those amounts are specific to MY body, and my body alone. But at about 3 1/2 months post op, I knew I had to do something. You body NEEDS food. It's like depriving your car of gas and then being surprised it won't go. Same thing. Lastly, I was in such a disordered way of thinking and behaving that I HAD to go to therapy. I'm still in it, actually. I had myself working out 2 hours per day every single day, living on flavored water, 300-400 calories per day, 10-15 carbs per day, almost no fats at all, and 40 or so grams of protein. And the less weight I lost, the harder I pushed my body and restricted what I gave it. I was so afraid of eating because I was convinced every bite would put all the weight back on. I was, at one point, eating 1 meal per day that I would make stretch all day and loading up on flavored water to curb the hunger pains. It's scary to think about what I was doing to myself. Find a therapist that specializes in bariatric surgery, and if you can find one that also works with people with eating disorders, that's even better. That's what I did. I still struggle sometimes, but I remember how far I've come and how much healthier and stronger my body is, and it helps me push past the feelings of wanting to cut my food and load up on water again. But a therapist is really important right now. I waited until I was in the thick of it before I even posted about it here, and I was encouraged to find a therapist, which was the best thing I could have done. I swapped one disordered way of thinking for another. I'm making my way back from it, but I'm still a work in progress. You can do this. I wish you all the luck

When was the last time you had your labs checked? Are you taking your vitamins? Meeting your protein goals?

Shouldn’t be too difficult. A dairy or lactose allergy is quite common & there are so many plant based dairy substitutes for cheese, milk, yoghurt, butter, etc. & plant based protein shakes available these days (thank you vegans) it should be easy. (Watch the coconut ones though as those I’ve seen often have a higher fat content.) The protein content may be something to be conscious of too but as your doctor said, your dietician should help you out with that. As for the sunflower seed products, which is more uncommon, you’ll probably just continue being vigilant with ingredient labels. Actually some people develop a temporary lactose intolerance in the beginning & simply swap to plant based dairy products & shakes without compromising their weight loss.

I’m almost 3 & a half years & I still feel my restriction at times. Though it’s usually not related to how much I ate but what I ate. I felt it Saturday night because of some coarse vegetables I ate. Got a slight case of the foamies too. ☹️ However the goal really is not to feel the restriction just like it shouldn’t be to feel full as an indicator to moderate how much you eat. Once you feel full or the restriction you’ve already eaten too much. I ask myself do I need the next bite or do I just want it. And I only serve myself an appropriate portion. As @summerseeker said we’re all different. While there may be similarities you really can’t compare yourself directly to another. You’ll work out the portion size, the foods you need to eat & the calories you need to consume to lose & maintain your weight & for your body to function effectively & healthily. If you’re determined to do it you can eat around your sleeve but do you want to? To go back to eating how you did will only lead you back to each to where you were before surgery - with a weight problem. I eat smaller portions than I did. I eat more regularly now (was a meal skipper). There are a lot of foods I don’t eat any more or eat very little of or rarely but that’s my choice though there are some that don’t sit as well (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) I don’t eat. I eat a lot more protein because of an absorption issue. I don’t eat a lot of carbs & very little sugar (real artificial or alternatives) & I feel better for it. But again that is me. You’ll work these things out for yourself too. Remember, no one diet/way of eating works for everyone. All the best.

I don't know the answer but I'm hopeful I will be able to see it when I look down instead of my belly. Not having morning wood has not been a major issue for me but it has been about more frequent and seems a bit longer before it goes down. I read somewhere that the higher intake of protein and vitamins will help. So I think it can be true. Keep healthy.

Hi, Welcome! I also have a dairy and fish allergy so it was a bit harder for me to find a more varied diet. For the yogurt I was using Siggi's plant based yogurt but have since moved over to Kite Hill plant based greek yogurt. Less carbs, less calories and more protein. For my drinks I use Evolve mainly. I used to use Orgain and OWYN but I think those both have sunflower in them. Just make sure you read the labels and you will be fine.

so i am 6 months post op. i can eat a lot during the day. But not big portions. I fill up quickly. But like 45 minutes later i am a bit hungry again and that goes on throughout the day. I typically have a protein shake to get past that.

I’m trying to figure out if I will be ok for surgery the week after next my son’s birthday it was last week which I also started my preop diet, which was on the third and my sons birthday was on the fifth. I had two cupcakes, but I did start my preop diet, the right way until his birthday then yesterday I went to a party which I had two slices of pizza but in between those times I was still eating when I was supposed to and also doing my protein shakes like I’m supposed to I have one more week which is coming up of the preop diet and I wanted to know do you guys think I will be OK?

Is there a particular low sugar version for the fairlife shakes? Every chocolate or vanilla fairlife shake that I have found at my local grocery store has much more sugar than other protein shakes I've seen.

Where are you on your journey OP?? I'm almost 11 months post sleeve. If I stick to protein first, veg second then I can eat three kind of half sized meals a day - 2-3 of oz of meat/fish and a few oz of veg - and two or three snacks. I reserve my carbs for bedtime so generally have porridge (oatmeal) made with milk then cos that helps me sleep (I am such a baby). I make a point of having one or two servings of fruit a day and at least three proper portions of veg for my general health - I know lots of people have lots more than that this far out from surgery. If I wanted to eat carbs all day then I probably could and would probably gain weight but I've gone to some trouble and expense to get a tool that I can use to lose weight and then also keep me at a lower weight so I intend to use it!! Stick to the program and you'll be fine, that is the absolutely most important thing. Best of luck. When is your surgery??

It’s all about what you eat that will determine if you can feel your restriction. If you eat slider foods - then you can definitely over eat. if you eat Chicken - I guarantee you can’t over eat. I’m 15 months p.o. and the restriction is definitely still there. I always focus on protein first.

Everyone who does this surgery will have a different story, I have found nobody is the same. We all have different regimes and surgeons' recommendations. So, everyone progresses at different rates. It is a mistake to compare yourself to anyone else. Well, I could eat for England as we say! Especially Chinese foods, I loved rice and noodles. Now I am just starting to eat a bit more, but I don't have a lot of hunger and quickly get full, so I have 5 small meals a day and 20 ounces of milk or milk shake a day. That puts my daily calories around 900 - 1200 My breakfast today was almost 4 ounces of protein yogurt and a milky coffee. Lunch was a peeled apple and a 1 ounce of French Brie cheese. I have just had a strawberry milk shake. My evening meal is 2 ounces of homemade pork sate with 1Tbsp of brown rice. The rice is just for show as I can't manage more than 2 tiny bites after the protein. Later I will have an almost sugar free ice lolly [44 Cals] and my milk allowance. If I am short on protein for the day, I will finish the day on 4 ounce of protein yogurt. I usually fit a bit of veg into my day, even if its only in a mug of soup, but not today I am used to seeing my tiny meals, but family and friends are shocked at how little I eat and don't see how big that their portions are.

I'm still a little sore and have no appetite so getting as much protein they want me to is difficult, ive been drinking as much Gatorade as I can to at least stay hydrated. Was expecting to only stay one night in the hospital but it ended up being 2. I guess my blood pressure was super high (which it's never been before) when I was in recovery, I know they gave me meds for it but I was too out of it to even ask what. The incision thats been the most uncomfortable the whole time was the largest one they took the stomach out through, the smaller ones never really hurt too much. Walking really does help with the gas pains which like everyone else has said the pain meds do nothing for. Can't wait to drive again, they said a week as long as I'm not on the pain meds anymore, they only gave me 6 when I left Thursday so only had a day or 2 worth and didn't need it anymore so Tuesday I'll be able to drive again if I absolutely need to. It's definitely hard watching the family eat and not be able to join them, im not even hungry but still looks and smells good so feel like im missing out.

I had VSG and I was fairly strict till I reached my goal, I focused on hitting my protein goal and drinking 2+L water a day, I didn’t really eat bread often as it filled me too much and I steered away from too many of my ‘trigger’ foods which were candy, ice cream etc. tried to have two serves of fruit a day and eat as healthy as I could 🙂

I’m 5 1/2 weeks post op and really have no problem with any food I’ve tried. I’m able to get in my low protein requirement and stay well below my calorie requirement. I try to bump that up so I’m hitting the low end of my goal, but I am just not able to. However, doing all of this now that I can actually eat real food again is leaving me feeling extremely guilty, as if I’m just gorging. In my mind, I know I’m not, I’m eating well within my plan, but I feel so gross like I used to before surgery when I’d eat crap. On top of this, I’ve hit my first plateau and have only lost 1lb in 2 weeks, which makes me feel even worse. Anyone else feel this horrible guilt? How did you work past it?
-
I had this problem years ago when I did a liquid diet not as bad as you’re experiencing though. I was told then it was because the shakes have a lot of fibre & block you up because your stools get too firm & hard. And you’re not eating any fruit or vegetables to balance your diet. I’d avoid additional fibre supplements until post surgery as much of the constipation then is because you’re consuming even less. And initially post surgery you’re consuming more than just shakes - broths & soups, milk, … if it’s so bad ask if you could try the two shakes & one meal (protein & vegetables only) version of the pre surgical diet. They may say no but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

I came out of hospital into winter at its worst. I was so cold all the time. Warm drinks were my go to. I drank so slowly my drink was going cold in no time at all. I bought a thermos cup and that was the best thing. Every day drinking gets easier. I was allowed coffee from the get-go and my surgeon didn't do protein shakes just plain skimmed milk, so my drink of choice was a coffee latte. When I was wanting salty, I had Boullion cubes diluted. Other times I had warm sugar free blackcurrant cordial. I still drink cold milk and latte's especially on days when I don't get much protein because there are days when I am not hungry You will work out what you like after your surgery. For lots of us our tastes change, I had a really nasty taste in my mouth for weeks and favourite drinks were put aside, and new ones found. Good luck
