Surgery Tomorrow and The Anxiety is Kicking in
kmalagon posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I have been reading the posts here for a while but today is the first time I am posting. I am having gastric bypass tomorrow and my nerves are setting in. My anxiety is through the roof. I am thinking and over thinking every complication and bad possible out come. I am doing this to be Healthy and be here for my kids for a long time. But I cannot stop thinking what if something goes wrong and I have a worse quality of life after or even worse I die and it is my fault that I willing put myself in this situation and leave my kids without a mother. I have been thinking about this surgery for 10 years and I always chickened out, But not this time. I want to do this. I am just scared. Any suggestions on calming my last minute nerves would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Severe Gerd/esophogeal dysmotility. Revision vs nissen or just hernia repair?
starladustangel replied to starladustangel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes. My insurance covered both my original surgery as well as my revision. -
I'm going in for a revision from sleeve to bypass soon. I can not do RTD protein shakes. They are far far too sweet for me. I do not have a sweet tooth at all. What I've been doing since my sleeve these past few years is just using fruit for flavor, like a few strawberries without sugar or artificial sweetener... Etc. So I feel like I'm a fix because after surgery, I have to go 14 days on liquid diet which includes protein shakes but I don't think I can add fruit even if blended well, right? Any ideas what I can add to my water (or other liquid) and unsweetened protein powder that will work post-op bypass? I know I can add my protein powder to broth but would really like to have some type of protein shake. Can I use PB2 (peanut butter powder) on the 4th day Post-Op? Is there such a thing as fruit flavored powder unsweetened that I can add to it? I don't know. I think I'm nervous and am overthinking things this time around. lol Thanks in advance!

Anyone experience a extremely slow weight loss?
NovaLuna replied to Ariakias's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've heard a few people who had the sleeve saying that they stopped losing weight early on. Sorry that you're going through that! I've had pretty slow weight loss myself when I compare myself to others due to my hypothyroidism and not being able to really exercise due to my back injuries and arthritis, but I was still recently able to get to my goal weight even after multiple really long stalls throughout my journey including the most recent one being 47 days long. If you look into revision, other than gastric bypass, you could also see if your insurance will cover the duodenal switch or loop duodenal switch surgery and if you can find a surgeon who will perform it. The sleeve is literally the first part of the surgery, they just add the intestinal bypass portion and you statistically lose the most weight with the DS. So it's an option to look into. I hope you can either find something that will work to pick your weight loss back up or a revision that'll work for you. I'm so sorry you're struggling and I hope that things work out for you. -
Anyone experience a extremely slow weight loss?
Ariakias posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all, I was sleeved a little over a year ago. alittle about me, surgery day I weighed in at 386. I’m 6’3” and prior to the sleeve I was in the gym 5 days a week most weeks. I’ve been the same weight since 5 months post op, currently weighed in at 315.No matter what I do, more intense workout, sleeve reset, eating more protein, more water, more greens. ( all those were doctor suggestions). Nothing seems to work, kinda like before I even had surgery. Even got to the point where both the surgeons nurse practitioner has said quote “ I don’t have any answers for you”. The surgeon suggest the sleeve reset because he said I had to be over eating. Which I don’t. I eat like a bird most days i got a second opinion 2 months ago and she put me on a 1600 calorie diet, she thought I was under eating and I struggle to eat 1600 calories. my worst fear was when getting the surgery was it wouldn’t be effective and I understand that I’ve lost like 70lbs. That’s all fine and grand I feel better but I’m only 10 lbs from my lowest weight I achieved on my own and that is extremely disappointing to me. I was told by the surgeon prior to surgery that the weight would melt because I was already active quite a bit. I’ve contemplated getting it revised to the bypass but with the slim success of the sleeve I’m quite reluctant to go get another procedure. im really getting to the point of not caring anymore. The doctors all say my labs are good, no thyroid problems or anything like that. im at a loss, this was supposed to be a nice tool to use to change my life and it just seems like it broke early. thanks for reading and letting me vent Matt -
Hi. This is my first ever post. I had RNY Gastric Bypass on May 19th, so I'm almost 10 weeks post op and I can't eat. Everything smells and tastes so bad, I can't even get it in my mouth without gagging and throwing up. I'm miserable, weak and so depressed because I can't even do anything with my kids. I can hardly keep water down most of the time, I've talked to my surgeon and they just keep telling me to eat, but I physically can't. Is anyone else dealing with this or has dealt with this? I'm really regretful at this point. I've already lost 70lbs but I'm just not sure that it's worth it at this point, please someone help me.. advice, your story anything, please.

What Led To Revision
relaxrelaterelease replied to dennydenco's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised from the sleeve to bypass last Thursday due to severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. Within about a month or two of being sleeved, I began developing reflux. It took almost 2 years to consult with a specialist who confirmed that I had developed GERD (and over time the hiatal hernia) due to the sleeve surgery. Please be your best advocate and speak up if you feel something isn't right. I took very potent PPI's for almost 3 years and that led to damage to my esophagus. I feel so much better already, and I am losing weight as well! -

Still Jumping through hoops for Ins

I finally scheduled my initial visit with the nurse practitioner. Had to have UGI and submit revision paperwork from my lap band I had years ago. This was all done and turned in May 3,2021. So I am at the very start of my journey. Trying very hard to be patient. -
What fears did you have?
tamm2x replied to hauntedhideaway's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am three months out from gastric bypass (April 14). I had no problems drinking water right afterwards, nor was there any throwing up. The hospital supplies the meals so no broth is necessary to bring there. I was able to walk and use the bathroom within the day. I stayed one night. The first week at home is a little rough as you simply don't realize how much you use your abdominal muscles for just sitting up or down. I slept a lot the first few days. I tried my best to not use very much of the pain meds as sadly, addiction can occur even with less strong ones. I didn't pick up any grandchildren for about two-three weeks. But overall, I feel really good. I began exercising where I could (beginning in May) so for the first month and a half I just made it a point to walk for 15 minutes every day. The next month (June) I upped it to one mile. I used the 99 Walks app which for some reason I find quite motivating. For July I went for a mile and a half and I hit my goal a few days ago. For August I'm planning to walk 1 1/2 miles every day for a total of 46.5 miles. Then in September I'm going for 2 miles per day. In addition to the walking, I;m going to a YMCA class two days a week. It has been so very long since I worked out at all that my muscles are very weak so as I stated, I started where I could and be successful. I have learned that this surgery is truly not a sprint but a marathon. It comes with a steep learning curve. But I'm very grateful that now I don't just tell my body I'm going on a diet (and quit a few weeks or days in). With the surgery, now my body tells me "You've eaten enough now" or "Want to find out who is boss now? Swallow something high sugar and I'll quickly let you know exactly how I feel about that! Remember your days of 'toilet hugging drunk'? I can show you what 'toilet hugging intestine problems' too!" I'm currently 60 pounds down and I feel so much better! The doctor took me off insulin (think four shots a day) the following morning as well as Atorvastatin. As my weight comes down, I'm planning to get off high blood pressure medications too. It's a little weird, but very worth it all! -
Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?

What Led To Revision
lbugher replied to dennydenco's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Another failed lap band here! I am getting revision to RNY tomorrow morning. I am so excited to get this awful thing out of my body. It did NOTHING to curb my hunger or appetite. All it did was make eating healthy food hard, and make eating slider food rewarding. Couldn't get a chicken breast and a cup of broccoli down because it would get stuck in the band but I could eat a greasy cheeseburger and a milkshake with zero issues. I wish the lap band procedure would be banned all together. It's useless at best, and potentially fatal if it's left alone to cause issues. -
I'm going to have a revision to bypass. I have the sleeve. With the sleeve, I went home right after surgery. I'm kind of stressing about staying at the hospital overnight. Like what to pack? I was wondering what they give you at the hospital as far as drink/food. Should I bring drinks, protein or broth... Etc.? Thanks in advance!

How long will I be off of work?
WebNerd11 replied to Pennykay's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the Gastric sleeve in 2016 and let's just say mistakes were made*, I gained all the weight back. I decided to do a revision surgery to the gastric bypass, so this was a revision surgery and my second one. Fluids are no problem. I drink 2 protein shakes a day, plus water, though i dont think i'm getting 64oz in - but im close. thanks for asking! *absolutely stay away from carbonated drinks and stop before you get full! The new stomach stretches back out so easily. Nobody told me this prior to surgery. -
How long will I be off of work?
ZhivagosGirl replied to Pennykay's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm somewhat better and a little bit better every day. I'm still using pain meds at night for sleeping. I had my first post op check up today - I drove myself. They said everything looked good. The post op pain (pulling/burning) was/is normal for bypass - 1 to 2 more weeks of pain is also normal (according to the doctor). I still have no regrets. I am glad the days I've accomplished are behind me. -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well I had the sleeve so bypass recovery may be different than mine. But overall, I don't think my recovery was long at all. Just the not being able to sleep part was a pain in the butt. LOL But I read how others who had the sleeve were sleeping just fine right after surgery so it truly does vary. And the pain wasn't excruciating or anything. More of an annoyance mostly. As for work, I'm a homemaker/housewife so I didn't need to worry about that. I can say my husband had off like the first 4 days to help me out with the grandkids who I take care of during the day (they also live with us with my son and DIL) and I really didn't need the help. Especially since I tried to be up and walking around as much as possible. About the only thing I needed to worry about was the kids jumping on/near me and not lifting things I shouldn't. Otherwise it was pretty easy. As for vitamins, I still take two Flintstones Complete chewables (as recommended by my doc) but I think when they run out I will switch to something recommended on here (ProCare) that is truly just one a day. Just waiting on my doc office to get back to me with whether or not it's a good one to take and if it meets all the requirements I need. If it's ok, it also will meet my iron and B12 needs so that I will no longer need to take those as extras. I'm trying to get rid of taking as many things as I can/least amount of pills. LOL -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
cheryl o replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
wow!! thank you for being so detailed. My date is Sep 20, and im so scared of this pain you talked about. Im having Gastric Bypass. Also another thing that really concerns me, is; how much time did you take off work? Im going to submit FMLA paperwork but im guessing 4 weeks? I read all your pages and your recovery has been long, many surprises along the way, so im wondering if 4 weeks isnt enough? I work at home , but very long hours like 11hrs a day sedentary. Please keep updating, what vitamins are you taking? Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
KSW22 replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I guess I will have to try something new now. I had my surgery Friday and they were unsuccessful doing the revision because of so much scar tissue from my perforated ulcer in 2012. He was able to repair my hiatal hernia but that’s all. Not sure how I’m feeling about it yet. I’m sure it will sink in sooner or later. Thanks for the reading references too. -

Revision surgery
catwoman7 replied to deannaculp's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
a DS has a sleeved stomach and an intestinal bypass (not a gastric bypass, like the RNY - but intestinal. It bypasses a big chunk of your small intestine). It's the most powerful surgery out there - but not all surgeons do it. Plus converting RNY to DS is a very complicated surgery that few surgeons do - but there a handful who DO do it - like Dr. Rabin and Dr. Keshishian in California. although since you have bad GERD, I'm not sure if this is your best option, since the DS involves a sleeved stomach. Sleeves can often make that worse. But it might be worth talking to a surgeon about. -
So frustrated, 1st appeal denied
Cia2020 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My surgeon's office appealed with the EXACT same language as the first request to go from VSG to an RNY which was denied. Hello month wasted, of course they would deny it again. What's that line about repeating the same behavior expecting a new result? Sheer laziness! 😡 I'm currently waiting on a call back from the appeals department at my insurance for clarification on one of the points of the revision criteria: Weight loss to 90% or less of ideal body weight If my understanding is correct, since I only lost 27% of my excess body weight and I'm a good 55 pounds from my ideal body weight (not even my goal, but I'm 35 pounds from that too and only lost 24 pounds total) I could be considered for revision. What I find is ridiculous is I have a few cm sliding hiatal hernia visible on my upper GI literally every time I breathe, hiccups countless times a day associated with that, GERD no responding to PPI use resulting in mild (so far) esophagitis, and documented dysphagia just with liquids on a swallow study done plus I've had vomiting with foods like meats that got "stuck" because my esophageal muscles aren't working properly anymore. All of which would be resolved with revision to bypass. Add in I have family history with cancer on both sides, including with my grandad and aunt on my dad's side who had stomach cancer (removed whole stomach) and esophageal cancer (multiple bouts) respectively, and this scares the crap out of me. I don't want to be on a PPI for years, which is not safe, or wait until I have 4 months of documented severe esophagitis that could turn cancerous. Not to mention what this could do to my asthma and high blood pressure during this whole Covid era, neither of which were resolved by the initial surgery either. Why does insurance have to be such a 🤬 ?!! -
I just said "eff it, i'm doin it". So glad i did. The davinci was so easy! No pain at all. It has been a breeze. Now I find myself "wanting" to take walks to lose more. Averaging about 3.5 to 5 miles a day walking, and loving it. Just know the sleeve isn't as restrictive as the bypass. I eat everything I used to, just much smaller amounts. I can't tell you about coffee, because I never drank the stuff to begin with. I live on Gatorade Zero and Water now.

Thinking about Gastric Bypass
GingersnapMI replied to CarolMcca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ditto! I chose RNY bypass over sleeve due to: 1) RNY gives slightly better results, statistically, and seems to be more commonly recommended for my age group (I'm 58). 2) I'm a twenty-year GERD sufferer, even when at lower weights. The sleeve can cause/increase GERD symptoms (you will find a fair amount of people here who had revision surgeries from sleeve to bypass due to GERD). I also had an older sibling who was a long-time GERD sufferer and ended up dying at age 61 of esophageal cancer. I decided to take no chances. 3) Bypass is reversible, sleeve is not. (Though there are very few instances when a reversal would actually be needed/done.) 4) I actually wanted the possibility of dumping as a "reminder" to stay on course with proper eating over the years to come. 5) RNY procedure bypasses some of the small intestine which causes mild malabsorption of nutrients/calories. This means that lifetime vitamin use is absolutely necessary (which is also recommended for sleeve recipients) but it also means that occasional digressions from proper eating won't be as detrimental to overall results. -
Revision surgery
catwoman7 replied to deannaculp's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
some insurance companies will cover revisions, and some only cover one surgery per lifetime. I have a friend who's had horrible problems with her 10-year-old lap band the last couple of years, but her insurance company refuses to cover a revision. of those companies that cover revisions, some will only cover them for some medical reason, like GERD or a mechanical flaw with the surgery, but not for regain (but some might cover for regain - not sure, though). the only way to know for sure if yours will cover it is to give them a call. I would imagine some might cover it - but some won't.
