  1. I’m in a similar boat as I’m also young. I’m F24 and 274. I’m scheduled for a vsg on the 25th but I kept having doubts. My decision was solidified for me when I was denied the loan I was pre-approved for (I’m self-pay). I spent 3 days thinking that I couldn’t get it and I re-discovered all the reasons I want/need it. Luckily I found another loan but it was a scary few days lol. I think the vsg isn’t supposed to have as many long term effects as the ds or the bypass. And like someone else said on here the most common regret I’ve seen is people wishing they’d done it years earlier

    February 2021 bypassers?

I got my bypass 2/9/21 recovery was hard. I was on Jardine for my diabetes before surgery to help me lose the mandatory 15 pounds before surgery. My surgeon was unfamiliar with the medication and should have took me off atleast 3-5 days before and didn't. As a result on 2/14/21 I ended up back in the hospital with metabolic ketosis and on top of that server dehydration .. Now on soft food I'm at the infamous 3 week stall and not feeling very hopeful. I started at the smaller end of the scale so I was warned weight loss would be slower than most but I didn't expect a stall so soon. HW 238 SURGERY WEIGHT 219 CW 204

    February 2021 bypassers?

@DeonneG I had my gastric bypass on 2/24. I too am a revision...kinda. I was one of the first people to undergo lap band surgery in 2003. My band slipped and I had to have it removed 13years later. I think I was slightly traumatized by my band slipping and all the medical issues and hospitalizations that ensued (but that’s a story for another day). I had met my weight loss goals and was falsely confident that I could keep the weight off without any wls tools. Flash forward 5 years and too many diets to count here I am at my highest weight ever. I’d love for us to share ideas, recipes and experiences! ❤️ So far I’ve been living off of Premier Protein shakes, Unjury protein broth and crystal light. I have had no restriction and no discomfort when I eat so I was just given the go ahead to advance to non clear liquids. My doc also told me to give a soft scrambled egg a try. Last night my friend dropped off a puréed lobster bisque. I strained it and drank 1/2 cup. It was divine!!! Still no restriction, never felt full. I felt like I could’ve had 2 bowls without my new stomach speaking up but I stopped on my own. I’m starting to worry that the lack of restriction and a very crappy metabolism are going to impact my weight loss. Patience has ever been a strength of mine 😏
  4. Before my revision to a mini bypass I experience horrible Gerd daily. I had revision on 2/23 and haven’t had any since surgery.

    February 2021 bypassers?

I was revised to mini gastric bypass on 2/23. I had to have it do to developing Barrett’s Esophagus from my sleeve which I had 12/20/15. This was the hardest surgery I have ever had. I am home one week as if today and finally feel human again. Looking for someone to share ideas, recipes, goals and ups and downs. Preferably someone who had surgery around same time as me.
  6. My gastric bypass was two years ago yesterday, and I'm happy to report that things are going well. I gained about ten pounds during maintenance, and in retrospect I think that my low weight of 132 was too thin. (I never dreamed two years ago that I would be saying those words!). I feel like I am eating "normally," though in smaller quantities and without most of the junk I ate when I was obese. I still avoid sugar, carbs and fat, but I've gotten a bit more relaxed about indulging from time to time. I celebrated my two-year anniversary with a huge piece of cake washed down with an ice-cold Coke. (Just kidding--I ate my usual diet!) I'm attaching a photo taken this morning to show what I look like these days. I think it's useful for those of you just starting this journey to get a glimpse of what life can be on the other side, particularly in maintenance.
  7. I love lifting weights and as soon as I am released to do more exercise plan on hitting them again. I had bypass Feb 2 so am walking and riding the bike right now but getting antsy.
  8. Developed GERD right after surgery. It was mostly controlled by diet and omeprazole until December 2020 when I began having massive issues. My PCP switched me to pantoprazole/famitodine which helped but as I was still continuing to have issues I was referred to the gastroenterologist. Gastroenterologist decided I needed both a colonscopy and endoscopy. Yesterday was the earliest they could get me in for one. Colonscopy came back with mild diverticulitis and they are recommending I increase my fiber and fluid intake to manage it. Endoscopy came back with a lax LES and a 12 MM antral nodule that has to be biopsied. Hoping the nodule comes back as benign and not cancerous. The lax LES seems to be the reason why I am having so many issues controlling GERD. I have a follow up appointment to discuss with the doctor in a few weeks. Google is telling me linx procedure is the best option but some posts here are saying revision to bypass is better for bariatric patients. Putting my concerns about the antral nodule aside, has anyone had any experience with a lax LES and severe reflux after VSG while at a healthy BMI? I don't want to have a revision and lose a ton more weight. I can lose more as I am in the upper range of a healthy BMI range but I am happy with my current size. Was linx reccomended to you or revision? If you had a revision did you lose a bunch more weight or just a little?

    Caloric Deficit

So it seems to be losing weight isn't the same after you've had bypass. Of course not right away! I'm a little more than a year post op and haven't lost weight since I don't even know when. I often think the surgery was a failure as far as weight loss goes, it DID reverse the type 2 diabetes I had! THANK GOD. However, before surgery I could do a caloric deficit and lose weight, count or watch carbs and generally lose weight. I have no clue what to do now. Am I eating too much am I eating too little?? WE DONT KNOW. In general in your opinion what is the ideal amount of calories for weight loss being a bariatric patient?

I’m having bypass on the 24th! Super excited and nervous
  11. Varies from person to person depending on how you're feeling and your recovery. I'm a nurse and was back at work doing 12.5 hour shifts 9 days after my bypass. I felt fine and my surgeon said it was fine too, just no heavy lifting.

    Heartburn Questions

I had heartburn prior to surgery- generally I had it about 1x a day, sometimes more or less. I always controlled with Tums. I have been on 20 mg of Pepcid since I had surgery in early November and *knock on wood* I haven’t had to have a tums since. I am not sure if it is the Diet change or the weight loss or just the Pepcid, but it has been a welcome change. I’m honesty kind of concerned about tapering off the Pepcid in case it’s that because this is the longest stretch I think I’ve had in years without heartburn. So, so far so good from my perspective.
  13. I am scheduled for a mini gastric bypass March 12th. I started off with sleeve 2011 and then I had a revision 2018 a resleeve Gastric sleeve plication. I did not loose a lot of weight the second time and gained back the weight I lost . When I started in 2011 I was 235 got down to 149 with sleeve and then gained I got up to 187 when I decided to do the revision in 2018 day of sx I was 177 I lost like 10 pounds with the revision. I have to admit I was warned that with a resleeve it’s not successful on most patients but I did not listen. Now I’m 193 and I want to get back to 155 if possible . I heard good thing about the mini bypass! Please share if you can!

    Any March Surgeries?

I’m March 25!! Revision to Bypass. So excited!!
  15. So I had my consultation with my surgeon on Monday. Based on my own research I had thought gastric bypass was the best option for me. However my surgeon said that at my weight (I'm currently 265lbs at 5'3.5") and given my heartburn/acid reflux isn't bad enough to warrant daily medication, he feels like a sleeve would be the better option because there is less risk involved and the weight loss expected would be about the same. I now have an endoscopy scheduled for later this month so they can see if there is a hernia in play, and check damage/issues with my esophagus to confirm my issues aren't severe. This was thanks to the nurse, who was sort of advocating on my behalf for double checking the issues weren't severe. After the endoscopy we'll make a decision on bypass or sleeve then. I'm self pay though, so I'm really nervous that we'll go with sleeve and then my heartburn issues will get worse and I'll need a revision (which I'll also have to pay out of pocket for). So I wanted to check with some folks that have had the surgery about heartburn after. Currently I get heartburn/acid reflux 3-4 times a week and I medicate with tums/milk. It started when I was pregnant and didn't ever go away (even though I lost some weight while pregnant). Usually issues happen if I eat too close to bedtime, eat too much at dinner, or eat acidic foods. Sometimes it's bad enough that I'll wake up coughing in the middle of the night, feeling like I have stomach acid in my lungs (this is when I attempt to drink some milk to get the throat burning to calm down, not that it works well). If you have had similar heartburn prior to surgery, and went with the sleeve surgery, did the issues worsen? Did they get better with weight loss (my surgeon suspects it's a weight issue and will go away after the weight is gone)? Am I being reasonable in my concern or should I just listen to the surgeons recommendations regarding which surgery to get and keep my own fears out of the decision?
  16. I just got scheduled for my surgery March 25, 2021! I am so excited and so scared all at the same time! It is crazy how I feel. I keep looking at posts for inspiration and motivation to keep going. Reminding myself, wow that could be me in a few months! Anyone else feeling like this and scheduled for Gastric Bypass this month?

    Runny nose

Yes! I thought it was just me. I had gastric bypass on 12/23/20. I have seasonal allergies so I hope it doesn’t make it worse.

    Mini melt down

First, welcome to Arizona and the warm temperatures that await you. You will be able to get warm weather clothes when you get here as that is pretty much all that is sold in the stores here. I have been having a tough time with clothes recently as well. I have been wearing a XXL and size 44 shorts until recently. This is after 100lbs of weight loss and I thought it still looked good on me. My family on the other hand has said otherwise and told me to go get new clothes. I recently went shopping and bought a 38 size shorts thinking that these would be my new size. I took the shorts home to try on and they fell off without a belt on, there were multiple inches of clearance. I went back and exchanged them for a size 34 and they fit. It is amazing that the sizes go so quickly. I also bought a few size L shirts but they were still too loose so I went back and grabbed a few M and they fit perfectly. I still am in shock that I am wearing a M shirt and 34 shorts now when it has only been a couple of months since surgery. I haven't been this weight in a very long time. My wife and I just had surgery together in November and have lost a lot of weight so far. She is also having to buy new clothes and she does not like shopping at all. The only reason she goes to get new clothes is because the children that she works with tug on her pants and she doesn't want them to fall off. Body dysmorphia is no joke and I agree that this whole issue is just a massive head game.

    Skin

I had my bypass surgery November 2nd 2020. I was wondering if there is anything out there to help tighten your skin? I'm down almost 70 lbs and I have loose skin around my trunk and thighs. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you
  20. I am struggling to eat anything and I am concerned because my legs are swelling and I’m not urinating much. I’m 11 weeks post gastric bypass surgery. My stomach seems to be growing even without me eating very much. I’m a little down from this.

Have you contacted your surgeon? 11 weeks is a long time! Sounds like your body is trying to hold on to your fluids to prevent dehydration! Are you drinking your required amounts of water and clear liquids, plus getting required grams of protein? Feel better.

See your Doctor that is not normal. You sound as Bettye said to be retaining water. Are you peeing and pooping?

  21. Can someone help me add my revision from lapband to bypass on my bio. Also need to know how to add the additional ticker. Things have changed here a lot since 2007! I also have not found any chat rooms - did they get rid of them? Thanks for your help for this tech-challenged member.

    No restriction

I totally get you! I am 4 months out from a revision from sleeve to roux-Y-gastric bypass to address GERD /Heartburn/Reflux and ever since I have had the surgery I have had no restrictions once so ever. I can eat foods that I was not able to with the sleeve, I have no dumping issues, no problems once so ever with foods and I don't get the sensations of fullness that I got with the sleeve and it scares the crud out of me! I lost most of my weight with the sleeve and then more when I did the pre-op diet and then lost another 10 after surgery. I am currently stalled for the past 3 months but am only 9 lbs from goal weight. I fluctuate 9 lbs up and down depending on whether I have moved bowels or not, LOL - you guys get that. I track my foods and keep thinking I need to go back to the beginning and back to only eating around 800 or 600 calories if I want to lose that additional 9 lbs but I am having a tough time doing that. Probably if I go back to basics and do the pre op for two more weeks, I could achieve this but not sure I could maintain. It is just so frustrating to not have the restrictions. I am pleased that I am 16 lbs smaller on average then I was on the sleeve but I worry for how long will this last? And when I do eat instead of getting a warning that I am about full, I get a very sharp painful feel when I eat too much and I never know when that will be. But I definitely can eat more not that I am trying to overeat. I do try and control my amounts but at times find that I have eaten more than I planned and then I get mad at myself. I get jealous of the ones that talk about dumping and how their bodies reject things and wish mine did this as it seems like a great control and that their tool works better than mine? It amazes me when they talk about only being able to eat a couple of bites and being full as this seems so foreign to my body? So you are definitely not alone in this!
  24. Just had my Gastric Bypass on February 23, 2021 and also gained left the hospital 10 lbs. heavier. Some people can hide the fluid retention better than others. My legs, ankles and feet were very swollen. On the 27th, I finally started losing the excess fluid. It takes a few days but it does start to come off. Best wishes for you on this journey!
  25. This is my very first post! I had RNY / hiatal hernia surgery for severe reflux due to my BMI. Gastric bypass was never my first choice but I figured it would be a win-win. Fix the reflux and lose weight! My surgery was February 24, 2021. Today is postop day four. I was down to 278 before surgery. Today I am 283!!!! I am in shock that eating 400 cal a day, 60 g of protein (and I’ve been able to drink about 50 ounces of water every day!) I still haven’t lost weight - in fact it’s gone up. I was in the hospital for two days because of severe pain and had a lot of IV fluids so this could be it but I don’t feel swollen? Did this happen to anybody immediately postop? 😬
