    Considering the Lap Band!

My two cents are research, research, research. I was banded in 2010 and I would frequent all the lap band boards, I would see all the success and before and afters, and I wanted that. I wanted that so bad... What I didn't research was the complications and fail rates of the band. I did everything I was supposed to... 6 week fills, no carbonated drinks, low sugar, low carb, and it still just didn't work. After over 2 full years of vomiting, damaged esophagus, and band slippage, and extra surgeries...not to mention only a 30lb loss, I gave up. I got a complete unfill and started researching revisions. Please do the research! Most surgeons won't perform the lap band because of the fail rates and revision amounts. But best of luck to you and whatever you think is best!

    Pregnancy- After Sleeve

I want to have one after the sleeve. The doctor told me to wait at least a year to not add complications in the mix. Since hormones will be raging from what I hear lol the doc said be careful not to get pregnant right away. Dawnie_doo
  3. I had a lap band placed 3 years ago. At the time of surgery I weighed 407 pounds I am currently 295 pounds. Yes the band did work it wasn’t magic. I did have a lot of complications. After the first year all my complications started to happen. I threw up every day for the past 3 years. I was constantly sick and some days couldn’t even hold down water. I am currently 5 days post op from my revision. I had the band removed and had the bypass. During the operation my surgeon said my stomach had begun to grown around the band and was very difficult to remove. Yes the band does work to a certain point but in my opinion if you are going to go threw all the pain of having wls go for something more effective!
  4. @OKCPirate Sorry for the delayed response. You posted, "Dr. Stapleton, I'm really not nit picking, but why would you call obesity a "disease" as opposed to a "condition." I think a case can be made for those who really messed up their internal set points with years of yo-yo dieting it might be akin to a disease, but for some it is choice. The disease model is used in a number of complicated dependency issues, and while I agree there are some complicated brain issues with compulsive behaviors which can get so out of control that human rational will power is ineffective for creating change, for some though this is used as an excuse for inaction. It is an important semantic difference to me. It's what makes WLS a tool to me, not a magic wand or cure. I still have to work the program to get the results. Something for consideration, rhetoric, labels and words matter." The reason I describe obesity as a disease is because the American Medical Association refers to it as such. And clearly, there are numerous physiological issues at play when obesity is present, regardless of the particulars. People have opinions about this on both sides of the fence. I understand what you are saying and if the semantic difference is important to you, then I would stick to what you're comfortable with. I wholeheartedly agree that WLS is not at all a magic wand or a cure. Maintaining a healthy weight requires a great deal of consistent effort and defining obesity as a disease or not doing so does not change that fact. Similarly, if one has cancer or asthma or any number of other diseases/ailments, in order to obtain the most favorable outcomes, consistent effort and the choice for healthy behaviors is necessary. Thank you for your insights and observations.

    Dallas Area Celebrate Vitamins

Hello there, Yes, my surgery was at Medical City Dallas by Dr. Michael Sutker. The doctors and staff are very efficient. My experience with them was great even though I had complications. If I had to choose again I would still go back to them.

    I Hate Everybody

-Im so fat right now That's why you are having this surgery. You are doing something about your health, be proud that you are not sitting back doing nothing but complaining about it. -I just wish July 11th would hurry up and come It's coming! Get busy take on one more project at home you can finish before the surgery. Give your bathroom a make over, rearrange your living room, paint the guest room, go to a movie, volunteer somewhere, that will help kill some time -How will I make it through the Pre-op? One day at a time. Don't focus on how much longer you have to go, focus on how far you have come, it will be over before you know it. Seriously don't count down until at least the halfway point -Im so fat right now Me too -What if this surgery doesnt work for me? Don't sabotage yourself before you even start! Do you have a good plan in place that sets yourself up for success? Exercise plan is equally as important as food. -What if Im always going to be this size? Your not. Stop thinking like that. Seriously -How did I let it get to this point? Probably the same way as most of us did. By over eating, comfort eating, poor diet and lack of exercise. You can't change the past, it's already done. You can make the future better and you are taking steps to do that. It's ok to reflect on the past and learn from it but don't beat yourself up, move forward! -Im so fat right now Not for long! Woot woot! -I hope I wake up You will. Most people die from complications not on the table.
  7. I'd never heard of this. Does it cover complications at any hospital or do you have to go to the one where you had surgery? If I got surgery it would be at a hospital 200 miles from where I live, I don't know if they'd cover me if I had to go to a local ER.
  8. hi, i definitely recommend going to Mexicali, with Dr. Aceves. He and his staff are very reliable and professional. The service at the hospital is great. I haven't had any complications and my trip to Mexico was all well worth. If you need more information, please feel free to contact Nina, she's the patient coordinator and she'll answer all your possible questions. Goodluck and if you need any more help please feel free to ask as well.
  9. I had a DS last week with Dr Wilhelmy as well. So far, so good. It's a real hospital, but it is not a U.S. Hospital. Dr Wilhelmy doesn't have a bad accent, but I think he may have a limited vocabulary in English (Dr. Campos acted as a translator during the pre-Surgery consult, though Dr Wilhelmy came by himself for the daily checkups post-op). No serious complications so far.

    Egg white

Don't do it. My hospital did a research study of post op bariatric patients and found that egg have a Protein that can cause digestive complications in some patients if introduced before 4 weeks. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

    Surgery Scheduled

complications are pretty rare - I'm sure you'll sail through just fine! Also, if you follow your surgeon's plan, you WILL lose weight!

    sharon p

Hey lessofme and Sharon P--hope you are both doing well with your surgery and your decisions. I'm having Dr. Hansen do my surgery on March 19. Right now I'm feeling a little apprehensive about it all--will it work? can I eat following the rules for the rest of my life? (I'm sure those two questions are related!). What if I have complications? Spending money out of pocket for the surgery is one thing, but thinking of doubling or tripling that amount because of complications is very scary. Lessofme, have you survived the long period of liquids and pureed/strained foods without too much problem? Have you lost weight yet? You'll have your fill the day I have my surgery! I'm so full of emotions: excited, nervous, anxious, hopeful... But, what else is new??? Good luck to you both! Karen (in Provo)

    Dr. Joffe and the TLBC

I would not be surprised if Joffe decided to retire, when I was banded 5 years ago he was already in his 50's so he is not a young man and he has kids, and family and a complete golf obsession. I know the clinic staff haven't been told why he is leaving or at least nothing they can say since three of them are friends of mine and have been for a while. I have an appt booked with Yau on Monday and I know I will be asking him about my aftercare since I was banded before TLBC was a blink in anyones eye and Joffe once upon a time was my primary surgeon and in the past I have had serious complications so my follow up care in the future is a huge concern of mine. I hope his health is great and he just decided that we are too high maintenance for him he runs what is basically two practices that are both full time jobs. He still does general surgery and is an emerg oncall surgeon for Scarborough Grace along with his banding practice. I know banding patients take huge amounts of time (less now that he isn't doing fills anymore) and our follow up goes on forever, at 5 years out I am still getting the occasional fill and de-fill so multiply that by the 2000+ patients they have banded and that is a ton of work for both the surgeons. But people should keep in mind that their contracts if they are TLBC are not with Joffe or Yau but with TLBC. And as long as TLBC exists they should be ok with fills, de-fills and any possible complications.
  15. I feel like I just won the Texas Lottery, after reading so many post on how hard it is to get approved. I found out today that I am approved and I have a surgery date of July 24th. Which can't come soon enough since I have had some complication from my Lap band. As hard as these past 3 years has been with my band I believe the lessons I've learnt will benefit my new life with the sleeve. Winning the Lottery changes people lives and being sleeved will differently change my life. I have BCBS of TX and hen I called today I was told that my doc office sent the paperwork in on the 5th and it could talk 7-10 business days to get and answer that was at 11:01am and by 3:59pm my doc office was calling me to say I was approved. I was in shock and happy and nervous all at the same time, like a lottery winner. I would have jumped up and down too but I was in the car parked in front of Wal-Mart and have too much port pain. Good Luck to those waiting on approval.
  16. BabyCat Good luck on your banding. I was banded in Mexico, they released me from the hospital the next day and I decided to spend the night after surgery in San Diego because I didn't want to stay in Mexico but wanted to be close to the border in case of any complications. San Diego was having the Columbus Day Street Fair or something like that anyway the day after surgery I walked around for hours. I took little breaks here and there and drank a lot of water...slowly... but I returned to work 4 days after surgery. My job is not physical. (counselor with teenagers). I did notice that for about the first 2 weeks, I got tired quicker then usual and I did go home early a couple times cause I was tired but I was able to do about 85% of my "normal" activities right away. The hardest part for me was finding a comfortable sleeping postition because of the little incisions and the port. (I am not a back sleeper, if you are then no worries). REMEMEBER that you are recovering from surgery though and even though you feel fine no heavy lifting. It is hard to remember that when you feel fine. But you will have stitches inside that need their full six weeks with no heavy lifting!! That was very hard for me to remember or even understand since I felt normal and I was helping a family member move before my six weeks were up and ended up causing myself some port pain. My port in now tilted and my doc thinks it's because I was lifting and probably tore stitches around the port. I hope others learn from my mistake rather then testing the waters on their own....

    My surgeon was just arrested!

I also live in Wichita but I'm going to Kansas City for my surgery. I won't elaborate with why I say this but I wouldn't let any of the surgeons in that group touch me. Frankly, I'm not surprised this happened. I have seen his patients have a lot of complications post op. It's been worth the 8-10 trips to KC to go where I feel safe. Wishing you the best with whatever your decision is.

Tummy Tuck Scheduled for May 21

I would think you'd be pretty well healed by August, barring any complications.
  19. Mom2two- Do you actually vomit or is it PB? Just curious - these type of complications are what scares me the most. I only PB if I eat too fast, too big of bites, or don't chew well. I'm guessing yours was much more severe than this??

    3, 6, 12 months after being banded

I am just a week under my six month post op date. I can share my results so far: Statistics other than weight: Pants: Size 52 waist and 34 length Shirt: 22/39 Casual: 4XLT Pre-Op, I did not take the preoperative diet seriously and hit day of surgery without having lost an ounce from my peak weight. I started the process at the same 450 pound mark as my first consultation. The night before the surgery, I was terrified of the doctor opening me up and having to postpone the procedure because my liver was too fatty from my pre-op gorging. Thankfully, the surgery went as scheduled with no complications. I had the lap band and also was able to participate in a study for plication of the stomach. Basically, the surgeon folded my stomach in half and sewed the entire length together, similar to the gastric sleeve without cutting. Once the stomach was folded and secured, the band was placed and sewn into the fold to limit potential slipping. After my one day stay in the hospital, I took the doctors advice to heart and followed the directions to the letter. Nothing but recommended foods, liquids, and consistency from that moment forward. Getting past the psychological barriers was the most difficult part of the process. I would torture myself with foodnetwork shows and recount days of past food triumphs. Despite all, I managed to completely follow all advice and direction. 3 Months: I had lost 75 pounds to a total of 375 in the month of March 6 Months: I am a week shy of my six month anniversary and currently weigh 325 pounds, having lost 125 from the day of surgery Long-Term Goal: To achieve a healthy BMI for the first time in my life, I need to weigh 216 pounds. My own personal goal is to reach 225. I want to be able to say I am half the man I once was before making the decision to have weight loss surgery. Will I make my goal, not sure. However, I am well on my way and it is all thanks to the lap band. Current Stats other than weight: Pants: 42 waist and 34 length Shirt: 18/39 Casual: 2XLT
  21. You know, I don't like to lie and yet I was going to hide this surgery. Life got in the way so I'm glad I didn't attempt to lie (I had major complications and was bedridden a couple of months as well as hospitalized several weeks). In my mind lying just leads you down another dirty path and really, why lie? If you were leaving for heart surgery would you keep it a secret? I prefer to tell my secrets so that they don't become the fodder for gossip. It's no fun to gossip about the girl who told already I've always been this way and it's so much easier than getting trapped in a web of lies. You look like such a fool as well when it's clear you were lying, which hurts your credibility both in your personal life and work life. Go at it full force and embrace what you are doing and no one can have anything to gossip about except how good you look! I will give you another perspective though....I am "the boss" and if I was told by a staff member that they needed to leave for medical reasons, aside from requiring the usual doctor waivers etc, the fact that you are going to be out or even why if I happened to know the details would NEVER pass my lips! NEVER NEVER NEVER! My answer would be "shes out for a couple of days" and nothing more. This is both a legal and ethical requirement of a boss. If you are worried and do consider it a secret, be sure to be very clear that you do not want this known by anyone. That said, you will be acting differently at the office and might need more time off than you ask for if you have complications. Upfront and honest is the only way to be IMO as that will garner you support where as a lie will result in quite the opposite situation. Just my 3 cents Best of luck whatever you do.

Band to sleeve, same op, August 12th !

I am now 8 weeks out and no complications. Mine was pretty easy biggest surprise was how long if took to get my energy fully back, about 2 weeks. This week I'm back to eating normal foods and boy so nice to keep it down and no acid reflux issues. I'm so glad I finally did it. My surgery was about an hour long, a little scar tissue but my dr was able to remove it all. My port was embedded so took a bit to get it out (I knew something was up as I always had pain in the port area shortly after getting my band but was told its normal). I stayed 2 nights in the hospital.
  23. Not only speak to your surgeon about it, but have a back-up plan as well. If you aren't feeling up to the travel or if there is a complication, be prepared.

    Asking For Prayer

Thanks everyone for ur prayers. Surgery went well no complications I should be getting discharged today.
  25. I went to my GP today and she totally discouraged me. Is NOT a fan of weight loss surgery at all. I got the same ol, same ol', "diet and exercise and let's send you to a nutritionist". I didn't even WANT to tell her that I was considering going to Mexico. Good god I can only imagine the lecture I would have gotten. I emailed Dr. Kelly to ask how they handle this. I would obviously have to go back to Dr. Kelly if I had any complications. Anybody else deal with their GP being dead against it? meanwhile another friend of mine who had a bypass said her bariatric team here in the US feels that the sleeve surgery is showing a LOT of promise. I feel so let down.
