  1. I'm worried suddenly. First of all, my surgery date was set for December 13th on November 30th. So I was told to start the pre op diet on December first, but then they couldn't get me in to a Pre op diet class until December 6th. I did start on the first, but that was not two weeks out, then when i went to the class i found i was not doing it quite right. I was eating 2% cheese, but "not the right kind" and my protein drinks had to many calories. My powder is fine, but then adding it to a drink made it more calories than they allow. So what I'm saying is, I'm basically only getting one week of pre op diet before my surgery this Thursday. Should i consider asking my surgeon to reschedule so I can try again and get that liver all shrunk up like they want? I want to do everything right, this is kind of a kind about thing! I'm worried 😟!

    Ketogenic Diet

Has anyone tried this diet post surgery? I've begun doing some reading and bypass is a contraindication for the diet. Anyone know why? I was 432 at the time of surgery, and reached a low of 298, but have been residing between 303 and 310. Any insight would be great. I have been noticing some old eating patterns creeping in and am working to address them. I have a goal of being between 250-275, but have been stuck for months now. I will be two years post op this coming October. I don't think I have utilized this site enough, and I don't really have a support system of other patients to bounce things off. My wife is great and my friends too, but no one really knows what I've gone through or what I am going through... thanks for taking the time to read.

    Iffy Feelings

Sounds like you have a good surgeon! Mine discussed RNY and Band with me, and had the same response for me. Sleeve was not available when I was banded. Remember, weight loss is slower with banding than bypass. I was ok with that. Best wishes in your decision.

    Ketogenic Diet

After surgery, I discussed the issue of weight gain with my nutritionist. Her recommendation for those that have reached maintenance phase is to eat a balanced meal of Protein, carbs and fat. Immediately after RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that processes fats and sugars was cut away. Therefore if you ate fats or sugars, it would pass through your new rerouted stomach and into your intestines and you could experience dumping syndrome. But after about the first year, your intestines realize something is amiss and evolve to process fats and sugars. I feel fats are important in the maintenance phase because the goal in the maintenance phase is hunger control. One of the properties of fat is to satisfy hunger cravings. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

    Coffee

I was sleeved on 8/21 and talked to my surgeon for my 6-week last Monday (9/30.) I explicitly asked him about coffee, and he said it was fine as long as I make sure to sip some extra Water to make up for the diuretic effect. The way he explained it, the "no-coffee" restriction is more important for gastric bypass patients due to the re-routing of their intestines....obviously that doesn't happen with our surgery. That being said, I'd tell anyone to respect what their own surgeon told them to do. If I hadn't asked, I'd be under the impression that I'm not allowed to have it. But my surgeon was quite clear. I then asked if there was any food or drink that I should always avoid. While he of course wants me to stick to healthy eating, he said that unlike his gastric bypass patients, there's nothing in particular that will make me sick or cause complications.

Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO

Do you have a lot of weight to lose? Are you a volume eater or a junk food eater or both? The sleeve is a restrictive weight loss surgery (as is the band). The bypass is a restrictive AND a malabsorptive procedure and requires some life long changes. Have you decided which is best for you? Once you decide, it will be easier to make a choice concerning what surgeon is best for you.
  7. I've bought two. One is silver and really nice, the other one is attached to a sports band. On the front they only have my information and emergency contact and then on the back is the info about gastric bypass. No be has asked me about mine. If they do I will probably just tell them I have some medical allergic reactions. It makes me feel safer wearing it in case something were to happen.
  8. I was banded on 5th November 2010. And I'm 28lb down, I had my second fill almost two weeksnago but think I am going to have to have some taken out. I am struggling to keep anything at all down, no fun at all
  9. Gosh, you just have the best way with words sometimes! "at one time we all were *only* 50 pounds overweight" - AMEN. I really just wish I could get it through peoples thick heads that this isn't easy. Actually, if I wanted "easy" I'd probably go for the bypass because I think (for me personally) it would get the weight off faster and would probably train me faster (dumping syndrome and all) to watch what I eat. This band is not an easy way out and I guarantee that there aren't to many people that woke up one day and said "OOps, I'm fat, how about surgery." I don't think that a "skinny" person would be able to live with the restrictions a band puts on their lives. I'd like for them to try and see how "easy" it is! I remember oh so well when I only had 30 pounds to lose. I told myself at one point, "If I hit 150, I'm joining Weight Watchers"...and I did. Then I lost 20 pounds. It came back....then I said..."if I hit 175, I'm going to join jenny craig this time" and I did. This time I lost about 40 pounds and it came back. Then I said to myself "I'm never going to hit 200 and if I do, Bariatric Center"....and I did and I only lost 30 pounds and of course it came back and brought more friends with it like it always did! I said "If I hit 250 I'm just going to jump off a bridge"...well, I couldn't do that because I was pregnant and my son changed my mind about the bridge....but never lost the baby weight and here I am...getting surgery on April 18th. I'm done and I am glad that help is out there now sooner than later. I am looking forward to this journey and ElfiPoo's continued words of wisdom....

    Nasal Gastric Tube ?

Hmmm i've had an NG tube before but, that was when my lapband came out. I didn't have one with gastric bypass. Any idea why they say you'll need one? Are you sure it's not a drainage tube/bulb that was mentioned?

Dr. T and the Hartford Hospital Experience

It is almost one year that I had my lap band surgery with Dr. T. I have lost almots 100 lbs. and have about 40 to go. I feel fabulous. Went from a 24 to a size 14 in what feels like overnite. However, this past September I developed ulcers and had to have all the Fluid removed from my band. It wasn't until December that I healed enough for him to start the fill process all over again. Why I mention this is because I don't rely on the lapband entirely for my weight loss. I spent a lot of time researching how the body reacts to food, the glycemic index, metabolism, etc. Fortunatley, without the assistance from the band for those three months, I gained ZERO lbs. In my opinion, the biggest problem we (lapbanders) experience is that there is little to no assistance post op, other than visits to Dr. T. When the scale doesn't move for a week or two, I feel lost. There's no books to assist lap band patients, there's no real support groups that don't include gastric bypass patients, and unless you want to pay your nutrionist $100 every time you cry on her shoulder, you're pretty much on your own.:faint: I have also shared with the office that the support groups are poor (in my opinion) in their information. I have only found a few that were worth attending. There was supposed to be a nutritional support group put together by the various nutrionists, but Nina didn't have time to support the group's organization and therefore, it went no where. Don't know how many people are interested, but I would LOVE to start a support group for those of us that experienced lap band surgery and would like to share the secrets of success, recipes, experiences, etc. If anyone is interested, please let me know. Looking For Dr In Cleveland Clinic

The only place I know of in the Cleveland area that does lap/bypass is St. Vincent Charity. I know several gals who have had the bypass there with Dr. Ben-Meir and state they would never go elsewhere. I live in Lorain county and again have not heard of a program at the clinic. Good luck and if you do find one, please let me know, Thanks. Lizzy

    Breast Cancer 3 day Walk

Hi, I am wondering if there are any fellow bandsters taking part in a 3 Day walk this year? I am doing Arizona November 14-16 and would love to start a thread about training for this event as a bandster. Anyone else?
  14. Hi I had gastric bypass surgery 16 years ago by a doctor in South Africa who has since been struck off the medical roll and this operation is now deemed illegal. I weighed 130 kg at the time of my surgery.6 months ago I weighed 52kg.I had never looked me felt so good in my life.I fitted in my 13year old daughters clothes. Six months later (now ) I have started to get swollen and fat and flabby. My once skinny thighs and no bum are wobbly fat and swollen now.my stomach is always bloated and I feel far and ugly again. None of my clothes fit me again and I refuse to buy bigger ones. The pharmacist says it looks like lymphedema and varicose veins. Can anyone explain to me why this happened and how I can get skinny again. Some people thought I looked anorexic but I was so happy. I don't even want to go out the house anymore.it's affecting many aspects of my life???? Sent from my SM-G361H using the BariatricPal App

    Weight Watchers??

Well, I'm frustrated to say that I've only lost 6 pounds since November. Up until now the band really has done all the work for me and I've been losing steadily getting to -50 with very little effort... But now that I'm at reasonable restriction (yes, I could probably be a little tighter, but I'm pretty tight) I decided to rejoin Weight Watchers and see if that helps. WAKEUP CALL!!! OMG I had no idea I've been eating this badly!!!!! I had a 50 point day over the weekend with absolutely no effort at all. I'm hoping that having a few weeks of conscious eating will get me back in the groove where I don't have to try as hard again, because I badly don't want to be on Weight Watchers. What do you long-termers do? Does the band do enough of the work for you where you don't need WW? Or are other people doing diets of one sort or another? How hard to you have to "try" to lose or keep the weight off? Thanks for any advice.
  17. Thanks so much for the story. My surgery won't be till October or November but reading these stories eases the worries for when the time is here!

    Love this chart

Is there a difference between bypass and sleeve? My surgeon said bypass patients lose the most first year, but sleeve catches up in year two. Sent from my KFTBWI using the BariatricPal App
  19. So I had a gastric band in 2004 and lost 11 stone then in 2010 I lost it and regained half the weight so I had a gastric wrap and it was biggest waste of money I didn't loose a lb. the dr was a butcher. ( that's another story) anyway in 2011/12 I got another band in and the dr said it was difficult to get in. I got ill in 2013 and that band was also removed. I went last week to try get any other surgery as all diet and exercise had failed and bypass seamed my only option. Now there saying I might not be able to have it. I have to have a barium meal Please god let this go ahead as I'm very depressed about my weight and I have fully regained every last lb and more. Rant over xxx

    Who loves their band?

I only had my surgery in November. I have a love/hate relationship with it right now. I haven't regretted getting my band, just disappointed that I am not disciplined enough with it. Those are the issues that I am facing right now. I have read about the sleeve and my thoughts on that is, it is permanent and with this band I could have it removed if I wanted to. That is why I chose the band and in a year or two I might have to consider other options if I don't have success with this, I do think that it is mind over matter and I know why my band isn't working...its because i'm not working as hard as I should.
  23. Hi Everyone! My name is Kim and I'm new here. I was looking to talk to people who have had lap band surgery that are in a similar to me in their goal. I am 5'5" tall and weigh 295lbs. I live in Southern California and have a referral for the weight loss surgery process. My medical group requires 6 months of classes (2x per month) prior to the surgery. Did anyone else have to do this? If so, was it beneficial? I have one child (almost 2 yrs old) and was really hoping to have more children. When I was pregnant I ate really well and lost 50 lbs (while pregnant) and since he was born, I have gained all of it back and another 25 lbs. One of my biggest concerns is not being to have children after the proceedure. Anyone have information on having children after the proceedure? I am terrified to have gastric bypass and feel more comfortable with the lap band proceedure but I have to do something. I really just don't want to have complications and possibly die from either proceedure, I have a child to live for. I am sure I will be posting more

    My weight loss success!

You look amazing! How did you pick the sleeve? I am thinking about either the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.

    Band vs sleeve??

As others have said, I chose this because the risk rate is lower and it is adjustable/reversible Also my insurance didnt cover the sleeve or plication, so it was either this or gastric bypass, and I didn't want the lifelong malabsorption issues that the people who I know that had gb have to deal with So far I'm very happy with my decision But I think that what will make all the difference is having a surgeon who you really connect with
