I don't remember the numbers, both both brands had values that fit within my surgeon's carbs/protein/cal requirements.

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

I hate to be a kill joy but I had a sleeve and I'm sagging like crazy. 60lbs in 4/5m But it all depends on you what the best option is. Bypass scared me too I'm happy with the sleeve Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Today is day 3 of the preop diet and yesterday I almost buckled!!! I felt weak and starving! I'm allowed popsicles and hello but nothing was helping. I can have cream of wheat with milk, smart ones meal at lunch (200 calories and highest protein), and high Protein shakes. If I need to do things, it's burning calories and I feel sick. Left the house Saturday for a hair appointment, was sitting in the chair waiting for the color to process and went to the bathroom 3 times. Watery mouth, heat flashes, and stomach aches!!!! If my body has been in (since 11/29) and will be (until 12/5) in starvation mode, doesn't that put your body into store fat mode. Myfitnesspal says when I complete my daily food diary I can shut down my metabolism. I'm wondering how much this affects weight loss after banding.

    going back to work

Do you have an option if it appears to be too much for you too soon? Do they know at work you had this done? I would begin the next stage of foods very carefully since you will also be changing your routine at the same time. Make sure to keep your Protein up, so you do not fatigue too easily. Good Luck! Kat

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

Hello Everyone Wanted to ask a specific question. I have Pseudo Tumor and I am having the Lap Band specifically to help with this condition. Is there anyone out there who got to go off medications after getting the surgery and losing weight? I considered a shunt first, but my neurosurgeon told me this should be a first line option. Any input would be great! Suzanne

    jumpstart AGAIN

I would pick a different protein drink for starts. Slim fast does not have a lot of protein and that is what you want to keep the hunger away. I eat 6 times a day and it keeps my body happy and also keeps me from making bad food choices. You need to start looking at what you are eating and ask yourself if that bad choice is really worth it. Sometimes I pick something up think about if I really want to give up that many cals and end up making another choice. Good luck, you have the tool, you can do it!

Oh no! Bridal functions! Need advice ASAP

Buying the other girls lots of shots...best (and most expensive) advice ever!! Sounds like you understand the gravity of the situation. haha my god, I am so with you on mourning the beer. I think it's so sad how I'm already thinking about how different superbowl sunday is going to be for me. My bf said the same thing. He's still unsure of this whole thing because it is so new. I'm sure he won't be dissatisfied with the results! call me a guy, but beer and football are...err...were...my staples in life. Guess I'm going to have to find another one.I actually can't drink wine but I will try some of the other options you suggest. Thanks for the comments

Can I remain a Vegan after lap band?

i used to be a big meat eater but now fish and chicken does it for me and even those are losing their draw. i love vegan products and since my granddaughter is severely allergic to eggs i am more aware of vegan eating and i enjoy it. i still need to get a book and cook book for vegan eating. i need to be more educated on the subject. i do enjoy when Cheryl gives us some recipes. i don't know how my doctor would feel about this. they are so tuned into animal Protein.

Total failure, but hoping to start again

During my initial consultation, I wanted a sleeve. My family was very anti-sleeve because it is permanent. My doctor actually agreed, saying my health was fine and that I didn't need to lose so much weight that I would need a permanent surgery like the sleeve. When I saw my doctor last, I asked about revising to the sleeve as I have concerns about the band longterm. She said again that if I was having no problems, I did not need to revise. Maybe the weight gain since then would change her mind? In the band's defense, despite not being great for actual weight loss, I did not experience many of the horrible complications I have read about online. My gallbladder actually had nothing to do with the band, but with years of extreme high protein/low carb dieting and quick weight loss. Still, I want to lose weight! Maybe I will see what she says. I don't really have time right now for a revision, but I want to be healthy and if that is what it takes... It is hard because she is so glamorous and I can really tell when she is disappointed. Well, I worked up the courage to reschedule the appointment I cancelled this week. I have one in a few weeks. Maybe by then I will have lost a couple pounds from restricting calories? Yeah, that feels right to me! I am shooting for that as I find it difficult to meet Protein requirements (and be a pleasant, functioning human person) at 600-800. If I find that I'm not losing weight, I can restrict down.
  12. I made a low carb/high Protein personal pizza tonight using Flatout Light Original Flat Bread and it was so good I had to share! This is definitely a new favorite. I used; 1/4 cup of Ragu Homemade Style pizza sauce 1/4 cup of crumbled Feta cheese 17 pieces of Hormel Turkey Pepperoni 2 tbsp chopped onion 42g fresh sliced white mushrooms 1/4c of diced red and orange peppers 4 low fat Mozzarella slices Serving size~ whole pizza! *If you can eat it all. It's not very big but even with an empty band I wasn't able to finish the last couple bites.* Calories~ 530 Carbs~ 26 grams Fat~ 28 grams Protein~ 50 grams(!) Enjoy! ETA; This was my first non-mushy meal after surgery. =)
  13. Thanks to all for this post and the replies. I am having almost the exact same problems but I haven't lost nearly the weight you have. I am going to try keeping a closer watch on my Protein, drinking more Water less coffee (with sugar free creamer). I also have not been good at exercising but I am doing better and have found some buddies to exercise with some days which helps. I also just bought a book that was recommended in another thread and I hope that it helps. Failure is not an option!

Still having reflux, going for unfill

B, in my heart of hearts, I really think it's just irritation too, but you know how the brain works, always thinking of other possibilities. I really don't think my band is too tight, because I've been steadily losing since the last fill (about 40 pounds). I remember eating a pita chip the evening that the reflux started, literally one chip, so maybe that's what did me in. It could have been too hard, maybe I didn't chew enough, anything is possible. I should have gone on liquids then, but I didn't, and I'm regretting that decision now. At this point, I have reflux from even drinking Water, so the thought of trying to drink a Protein shake makes me cringe.
  15. i had my band 4/2. I've been on Protein shakes and have been good for the most part, and some okay foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc... i refuse to "puree" stuff. yuck. yesterday I had some very moist skinless chicken (diced, and I chewed very well). later in the day, I had a couple Doritos (no, I dont intend on being bad), and some cashews. chewed the cashews well, of course. sorry, I have been exercising ALOT more and for some reason have been alot hungrier.. I've lost 14 lbs since my band 10 days ago..! a couple days ago I had a couple pieces of wheat melba toast. so far everything has stayed down fine without discomfort or anything else. any thoughts or feedback from anyone? is my band going to slip? am I hurting myself? or is everyone's healing a bit different?
  16. Well, I had my first PB today. I decided to get a salad today for lunch. I have been having GREAT luck with salads. I chose one that had plenty of Protein. Ham, turkey, boiled egg, and cheese. All was going great, just like always untill I decided to eat the egg. I had only eaten about 7 bites of my salad. (yes, I ate some protein first) The egg hit my gut like a TON of bricks. Mind you this is at lunch and today was only my 3rd day of work at my new job! I was sitting in my truck in the parking lot. I did not have a drink with me because We are not supposed to be drinking right?? I knew things were bad when I started sliming. I packed up my lunch and started heading back to the office. I had to walk by the pick nick table (with occupants) and started to heave just passed them. Thank goodness I was behind a bank of trees. Made it up the stairs and up to my office bathroom. I was sliming all the way. A mouth full of slime is no fun and makes things worse! I felt "the" feeling and stepped into a stall. One good heave and it was all over as quick as it began. I was worried about prolapse. (of coarse) I had some sunflower seeds and a cup of coffee to make sure I could get something down. I had no problem. I hope I never do that again!
  17. Total including 2 year follow-up care and support is around 17K. Insurance will cover all the tests required beforehand. They have a very good finance plan with options for payment plans. I had my surgery at Surgical Hospital of AZ. The center has moved and they are building a surgical center on the property where they will be doing it sometime in the future.
  18. What did the surgery cost there? I live on the eastside of tucson and want to look into options in phx and tucson for surgery.

    Advice please....

I am with you about the Protein shakes. I cannot bring myself to drink another one! I now try to get my protein in my eating eggs (usually just the whites), lean meats, and supplementing with Protein Bars. I researched online and one day found an article listing what they thought was the best low-carb high-protein bars. I went and purchased 8 different kind of bars and tried them all. Some of them were hideous, but I have found a brand that is not too bad tasting and doesn't spike my blood sugar (hence the low carb/sugar). The article stated that when choosing a Protein Bar it should have 20+ grams of protein, less than 230 calories, have less than 20-grams of total carbs, and less than 5 grams of 'net' carbs. This 'net' carbs thing is a bit of a mystery for me, but I did chose one that actually had the term 'net' carbs on the front of the bar. I am Type II diabetic (not on any medication anymore but still monitor my blood sugars daily) and I haven't noticed any adverse effects of eating the bars. I would recommend trying some of the protein bars out there. Just be cautious about what bars you choose. Some of them are labeling themselves as protein bars and they only have 5-7 grams of protein in them! I cannot waste my limited calories on eating something that isn't going to be beneficial to me! Good luck to you in your Quest to find another source of protein!

    Advice please....

HappyMom..if you look at one of your protein bars..look at the nutrient section under carbs...it will show you on the top line how many carbs and then below it it will list how many fibers is in it..well you subtract the fibers from the carbs and that will give you your "net carbs". Hope that helps..I wish you continued success on your journey!

How Often Do You Mess Up?

My nutritionist likes to say there are no "bad" foods, just foods you shouldn't eat as often as others. I tend to agree. I also like to look at this as a lifestyle change and not a diet- I do track calories as well, but just so I know I'm getting enough Protein and sticking to lower calorie. I was also told to have some calorie wiggle room, such as 1000-1200 a day instead of a set number like 1000. Some days you are physically hungrier and need more food than others. Yesterday I was physically experiencing the painful hunger pains even though I had already eaten dinner. I chose to have a yogurt and my hunger was gone.

    just some questions

I take my protein shakes with me in the car in a reusable bottle. I can relate to the no time to eat thing. If I'm in a hurry it's just something easy I can take along in a cup on the way - like cottage cheese.

    Baby Food

My doc is OK with it in the mushy/pureed stage. Someof it is higher in protein and lower in sugar (depending on the type) than some of the other things in that stage. For instance, all of the Gerber 2nd Foods meat flavors have 7 to 8g of protein, 0g sugar, 2 to 3g carbs, and about 70 to 80 calories per jar. That ratio actually isn't too far off of some of the protein drinks I have seen, and better than some of the light yogurts and soups that some people eat. However, the fruit and cereal flavors have less protein and more sugar and carbs. Baby food may not be the #1 best choice, but you could definitely do worse in that stage. BUT, I don't know anything about taste.

    Fruits and Vegetables

I would avoid lettuce for a while. My dr suggested giving it up, because no matter how much you chew it, it doesnt break down that well. I was a salad junkie before getting banded, so its gonna be rough for me. Well cooked cauliflower, broccoli, carrots go down very easy for me, but we are all different. The frozen microwave ones are good and they have the calorie/carb/protein content on the boxes.
  25. I am 9 weeks out and have one fill of 3 ccs. I have dealt with acid reflux for years. It flares up from time to time. Prior to the band, I would eat things like red meat or chicken and I could feel it work its way through my digestive system until it eventually cleared. Severe indigestion. Now instead of passing, the indigestion is quite painful and I have to regurgitate. What I have found that I need to do, is take something soft or smooth, like yogurt, cottage cheese, skim milk, a protein drink to "soothe" the tract so that I cans wallow food. If I dont, I have a miseable eating day. A scrambled egg is impossible to get down, I sucked the juice out of a slice of grapefruit and thought I would die. Even swallowing when I brush upsets my stomach. Do the soothing technique and things are fine. Anyone else experience this or reflux? The staff at the doctor's office says that I am eating too fast and taking too big of bites. I think it is more serious than that. Any thoughts? Thanks!
