  1. Hello everyone!!!!! My name is Tamra and I will be revising from LapBand to Sleeve, August 15th!! I cannot believe how many of us have the same day haha. I have had my band since 2010 but after life, babies, marriage and an empty band I am not heavier then my first surgery. I am nervous, scared, excited....everything you can be. I am located in Northern CA

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Thank you for responding! My bowel movements are daily so that isn't the issue. I've read stalls are common, but I wasn't expecting one only 3 weeks post op! May I ask, you said you checked with your doctor when you had a stall? Then you had a revision? I had a RNY, what more could they revise at that point? I'm sticking with the program..don't really have a choice even if I didn't want too...major surgery done..no going back. 😋 I know its fairly common to experience these stalls, but, it doesn't make it easier its still frustrating!

    Any October sleevers?

I just received verbal ins. co. approval on 9/23. My doctor's office will not schedule with the written approval even though they also received the verbal approval. I hope the letter arrives on 9/25 since that is one week since it was mailed. When I spoke to the doctor's office today, they told me they are scheduling surgeries for the second week of October. I am hoping for a 10/8 surgery. If that date is not available, then I will have to wait until 10/25 due to work obligations. I am a band to sleeve revision surgery. My ins. co. waived the six month diet criteria due to lap band complications. I am very excited and a little nervous even though I know I am making the right decision for me.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I’ve been undergoing revision on my 2004 gastric bypass. I’ve noticed that my hair looks and feels thinner. I hadn’t connected it to the revision. Thank you!

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

I am thrilled to see such positive responses! Often people seem to use these forums to emphasize the complications and revisions, yet not one of us would trade our banded life today.. What a great endorsement for the weighty (ahem) issues we have all gone through!...Physical and mental metamorphosis. Many responses were from seasoned bandsters.... (All are so truly welcome... )But years down the road it is a different path than that excitable honeymoon phase ( we all seem to have that golden year or so) and I appreciate hearing your stories. It helps me daily. Please keep posting about life
  7. Hello everyone, so glad to have found this forum. Am 2 weeks post Op and in general, my recovery is excellent. However, am having problems drinking liquids!! I manage about 1 glass of water in 2-3 hours.. Really trying hard but it dies nit work too well. I am introducing natural coconut water, no sugar, and this goes a bit better. But still, 250 ml of it takes a whole day.. So far I lost 16 pounds, quite happy with it. My bowels work every two days, which I find quite OK. I am basically here to get some support for the long road ahead. Specially with the drinking, as I understand (and also according to my surgeon) that this is the most crucial part. Thanks a lot in advance and much success to us all!! Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app

    October Bypass

Good Morning Everyone!! Approved for band to bypass revision on 9/26, I found out when I called Aetna on 9/28, pre-op appt schedule for 10/4.. my advocate told me to start my liver shrink diet Saturday (yesterday) which will put me at a 6 day advantage on this 2 week liver shrink when I go to my preop appt.. and a possible early October surgery date if available since I started the liver shrink diet already..I'm excited!!!!
  9. First off, there are just as many bypass patients that have significant regain because ALL of the weight loss surgery choices can be cheated. The malabsoprtion of calories/carbs/fats only lasts about 2 years, and then intestinal adaptation takes over, and all you'll have is the restriction of a stretchy pouch. So, if you're going to cheat, any of the surgeries will fail. If you do not address the emotional/mental aspect of making better food choices, none of the surgeries will work long term. Hate to be "debbie downer", but there's way too many stories of people getting surgery, and then regaining in 3-5 years out because they never worked on their relationship with food. You can check out the revision forum on obesityhelp.com and see just how many RNY patients are looking for revision because they've gained back hoards of weight, and can't lose it again even with diet and exercise. I removed the word "cheat" from my vocabulary when it comes to what I eat now. I just have to decide if the food I'm choosing to put in my mouth is nutrient dense or junk food. If I want to have junk, have I compensated it by ensuring I've eaten or will eat my Protein that day? Long term results with bypass and sleeve patients are only about 3-5% higher weight loss numbers for bypass patients. So, long term, you're looking at the same issue if you choose to not address your mental tie to food. My recommendation is to not have surgery until you are ready with other coping mechanisms in place to deal with food. Finding a support group, counselor that has experience with weight loss surgery patients are your best bets. They operate on our stomach, the rest of it is up to us because our brains are in control. You have to make the effort and constant choice on what to put in your body. I can still suck down a huge milkshake every day without issue, and so can my dearest friend that had bypass about 4 years ago. The big difference is, I choose to NOT do it, she does, and she's gained back 50 of her 150lb loss.

    My Band

Thank you for understanding the purpose of my post. I'm sorry you're going through this, too. My reflux came on strong after my unfill too. I'd wake up choking on acid, horrible way to exist. In addition to dealing with my motility issues, I've had influenza A and B plus a stomach virus in the last 5 weeks. My immune system is really run down and I think stress and the fact I only can eat properly about half the time aren't helping. Hope you find some answers! Let me know how your doctors appt goes! We have a Failed Bands group on FB, let me know if you want to join. The admin is very knowledgable about revision surgery and the kind of problems we've been having.

    My Band

MsMaui thank you for posting your story. I think its important for people to know what kind of experiences are out there. Some complications are because of the band, some are exacerbated by the band, and some have nothing to do with the band. It's not clear from your initial post where you were coming from with respect to the above three purposes for posting about complications. it may have been helpful if you included that. I noticed the same thing in your other thread about "Thinking Of Revising to VSG good info". The point of the post was vague and it is natural to think the worst when the poster doesn't clarify. It came across as misleading and possibly deliberate. As far as your problems, that's just awful and I'm sorry you've dealt with it this long. And I'm sorry you're losing your band but it doesn't sound like it is compatible long term with your existing conditions. I hope VSG or whatever you choose is a better solution and this stops being a negativ issue in your life. There's too much great stuff to experience without being hindered by pain or even Internet arguments. Best wishes.
  13. I had a revision almost 4 months ago to the day (August 26, 2010). All is okay at this point, until today. Tonight I decided to finish my Christmas Shopping and was in the Toy Dept. at my local Target. Suddenly I began to experience pain in the same area where my port was located prior to my surgery. It feels like someone has a knife in my incision and twists it occasionally. I think it's just nerves growing back but don't recall having such a pain after having my two c-sections in fact almost 2 years post op from my last c-section most of my incision is still numb. So with all that, anyone have incision area pain 4 months post-op?

    Christmas Lovers Thread

The scale has finally started to move after losing and gaining the same 2 pounds for over a month! I have revised my goals accordingly--NOt to give up, but to be more realistic. We are having an unseasonably cool weekend here in Virginia. Makes me think of the holidays coming....

    June Chat

Hi everyone! First of all, thanks everyone for the words of support. I needed it! I promise not to stay away again. Sadly, today was a complete and utter trainwreck. He poked me so many times I lost track, so we finally headed down to fluroscopy. After poking me many, many more times he came to the conclusion that my port is flipped. So..... time for port revision surgery!! Really, if it didn't involve needles and pain it would almost be funny. I'm scheduled for July 17th. It's just a local so it shouldn't be too big of a deal. He said he'd give me a fill while he's in there, so that's a small plus. After the initial surprise I'm feeling positive. My sister is here to stay with me for a few days and we're going to work out and watch our food. I'm not going to allow myself to gain one more pound dammit! I'll catch up on the posts and do personals later. Love you guys!
  17. Some people ask me if I believe the bible was divinely inspired. Let's stipulate that the bible was divinely inspired. But is it not fair to ask if it was divinely translated? But is it not fair to ask if it was divinely transcribed? But is it not fair to ask if it was divinely interpreted? But is it not fair to ask if the choice of which books to include was divinely inspired? How come the Jewish version of what the Christians call the "Old Testament", has sections that are not in the "Old Testament"? How come the Christian's "Old Testament" has sections that are not in the Jewish version of the "Old Testament"? How come Constantine, originally a Pagan emperor of Rome hand-picked a commission to decide what sections went into the bible and what didn't go into the bible? How come at least two English queens and two English kings made revisions in what has become the Christian Bible? Did you know that the Roman Catholics, the Protestants and the Jews each have different versions of the 10 Commandments?
  18. Carlene, there's a movie coming out about firefighters who pose as Gay to receive same-sex partner benefits offered by their company. It's a comedy but I forget who stars in it. It looks pretty hilarious though. I agree with you, and I think many of the current laws need to be revised to be more inclusive of people in special circumstances.

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.

Hello everyone. I was wondering the same thing. I had my sleeve in 2016. I had issues with GERD from the beginning since I had heartburn from time to time before my surgery. I was 207 on day of and 147 at my lowest 11 months later, and I was skeletal! I did love being so lean yet I still had horrible acid. My surgeon had suggested I had the gastric bypass but I worried that as I aged I would waste away in my senior years. Then COVID hit. No gym, just hunkering down at home. I have gained 25 lbs during quarantine. I also had a baby in September. I’m 5’1 and hate the weight on me. And the GERD keeps me from sleeping. Would I be able to get a revision that Medicaid will cover? Also, my sleep apnea is back.

    Banded Plication?

Hi Jacksbanster, I was banded back in 2004 and weight loss was great. I went from 322 pounds to 140 pounds. In 2010 my band seem to stop working and i started to gain weight (plus I stopped following the bandster rules) but that is because again I didn't feel I had the control the band gave me originally. Anyway, after gaining 60 pounds I was fed up and decided to investigate if others where experiencing the same thing with the band and if there were other options out there for me to look into. So I did a lot of reading and research and found out about the plication surgery. So I met with my Lap Band doctor and he told me more about this new investigational surgery called Plication. Fast forward, I had the surgery Dec 8th 2011. The surgery was a success, recovery was a breeze, the liquid diet was hard, but I got through it. My first post op visit I had lost 8 pounds. Then I got walking pneumonia and had to go on prednisone - this made me ravenously hungry and of course I regained all the weight I had lost back. I was so disappointed and frustrated that I wanted to die. But my doctor told me that prednisone is know for weight gain and I'll get back on track soon. So fast forward, my next appointment with him I had only lost 4 pounds which did not make me happy because before I had lost 8 and now I was starting all over and at a slower pace. It is now Feb 16th 2012 and I've not gotten on the scale because I don't feel like I've lost any weight. All my clothing fits the same and I just don't see any change and I've not weighed myself since my last fill. I've had two fills since my plication surgery and I'm still hungry (more than) I thought I would be with the band and the plication. This is a different experience than when I had the lap band surgery, the lap band surgery had the weight come off very quickly. I didn't even have to think about dieting I just wasn't hungry. With this surgery (albeit it is a revision of the previous band, new band with more capacity, and the plication) I'm not as pleased as I had expected. With all that said I think my expectations need to be adjusted. I wonder if people who have had the band and have had some type of complication with it (slippage, erosion, etc) it the pouch that is above the stomach is premanently stretched out of shape. I don't have the answer I just know that the experience is not the same. I'm having to really monitor what I eat and exercise everyday. So I eat around 900 to 1000 calories a day, and I exercise on the stairmaster for an hour/ or I go for a jog. I know that I need to incorporate some weight training but I'll just have to get to it when I can. As for your questions above: How was your recovery? Recovery was great. The first couple of days there was a little pain but after that it was a breeze. How soon did you go back to work? Surgery was on a Thursday I went back to work on the following Wednesday. Do you follow a low carb diet? I followed the liquid diet they put me on for about 4 weeks. Since then I've tried everything - right now I'm basically eatting lean cuisines or smart ones. But I think I'm going to try a one week Medi fast - we will see. Right now I'm so hungry between meals I doubt if I can pull that one off. Have you had to have any fills in your band? Yes I've had 2 fills since my surgery and they don't seem to have made that much of a difference. The doctors, are being cautious because they don't want me to get too tight and have another band slippage.. I understand that but in the meantime I wish I had more restriction. How is your hunger level? Higher than I thought it would be. But if I try to stay on an eat every 4 to 5 hour schedule I do okay. How much can you eat before you feel "full" If I allowed myself I could eat a lot. The think is I count every calorie that goes into my mouth. I use www.fatsecret.com they have an incredible food database - almost everything you can put into your mouth in in their database, So that helps. I hope that my story has helped you and I will keep you informed on my progress - I hope that you will do the same. Regards, Willowsdoweep
  21. I am feeling great. I went back to work in a week and have actually slept on one pillow flat on my back since coming home from Mexico. Prior to the revision, I stopped eating and drinking 6-8 hours before I went to bed in the hopes I would not wake up gagging on stomach acid. I finally took to sleeping in a chair.

    October Surgery Roll Call

I wish I had better news. I had sleeve surgery October 6. Shortly thereafter I developed a severe case of meraglia paresthetica, and they put me on all kinds steroids and nerve pain medicine. It completely STOPPED my weight loss for months, and brought on hunger with a vengeance. I have only lost 53 pounds, which has been disheartening. However, it is still 53 pounds gone. Have another 50 to go. ( I am also a revision patient so that can also account for a slower loss. ) My restriction is still there, but like most of us, I have to be careful and resist the urge to "graze". I take one day at a time and hope for the best. My nerve condition will be lifelong but fortunately not nearly as severe and I decided to stop the meds and manage it naturally. . It is wonderful to read how everyone is doing. Congrats to all on your successes.

When did you see a change?

I think it depends on how much you have to loose. I weighed in at 206 12/21/11 when I got my band so I had a low BMI. I lost 45 pounds and than had my revision o n May 6th and have lost 20 since. I think I felt the difference at about 30 pounds because I needed to buy new cloths!
  25. I had my revision surgery from lap band to sleeve on 9/10/13. I am feeling really good and already down 22 lbs from my starting weight. I pray this works better for me than the lap band did - glad to have that thing OUT!
