    November 2020 sleevers

    I'm down 91 since November 2 preop.
  2. Marie2021

    Anyone getting sleeved 3/22?

GM Everyone! I’m scheduled for bypass this morning at 9 and I’m super nervous as this is my 2nd time around...my sleeve in 2018 wasn’t successful. I’m wishing you all a speedy and safe surgery and recovery! I’m looking forward to OUR progress this year! ☺️
  3. I'm opting for the sleeve for the same reason + less issues with vitamin absorption, apparently. I think people sometimes opt for bypass if they have GERD and also because you usually lose slightly more weight.
  4. Hi all, I'm new here and have found this forum to be so very helpful! I had my initial consultation last week and the surgeon said I meet criteria for either the gastric sleeve or the bypass. Assuming I am medically cleared, I am leaning towards the sleeve since it seems a little less invasive. Although, I'm not really sure if I am taking all of the right factors into consideration. Any recommendations on other things I should take into account? (I have a BMI of 46 and am a type 2 diabetic). Greatly appreciate any suggestions! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    April Surgery Buddy

I just had laparoscopic gastric bypass last Wednesday. Liquids have been going very well. I just cannot figure out when I will know I am full.
  6. I had gastric bypass this Wednesday. It’s been interesting few days. Can anyone help describe how you know when you are full? also, has anyone felt more light headed A LOT when walking? I look forward to corresponding with others on this any other topics.
  7. Just wanted to see if there were any TN, well East TN, peeps going through all of this recently?? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Just curious as to what everyone who had the surgery in January are eating now a days? I need some ideas on what to eat as I'm getting bored but also not sure what to eat anymore. Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I started this process in October 2020 and I just got scheduled for surgery April 20, 2021. Woo-hoo! EDIT: Just found an April 2021 surgery group was already started in the Gastric Bypass forum. 🙂 No way to delete this post?
  10. Hi guys! Well it's been quite a journey through this but I've got my date.... April 28th [emoji3060][emoji119][emoji3060][emoji119] I'm so excited and really nervous at the same time. I'm a little nervous about the pain. I'm a pretty tough gal but for some reason I'm nervous. Of course beauty is pain for us ladies lol. Any advice on what the hospital stay is like and coming home?? I've made so many lists of what to take to the hospital and prepare for coming home. My Amazon cart is ridiculously full , but I'm extremely hopeful and positive. And so grateful for this it's like I'm getting a second chance or a do over. I really feel this is going to be the best thing I could ever do for myself. So any advice would awesome!! 11. Hey everyone! I'm back on here, looking for motivation and advice. Long story short, I've just had my first surgery following my final cancer treatment and the biopsy came back all clear! Looks like I beat the odds and tackled esophageal cancer in 16 months. I did not go through chemo, therefore the stress of the situation drove me back into bad eating habits and I put on 30 pounds. I'm 4 years and 3 months post-bypass. I've maintained at 200 pounds (down from 369 at my biggest) and was very proud of myself until recently. I have packed this weight on over the last 4 months. Winter. Holidays. Cancer. COVID. It all conspired to make for a rough patch, but I'm on the other side of the mountain now and determined to get back down to 200 which is where I'm happy and looking healthy. Thoughts? Advice? Words of encouragement?
  12. Sounds like we had almost the same thought process. I’m going with bypass too (surgery tomorrow). I think we made the right choice!
  13. Alot of folks already said more or less the same thing, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway: I chose sleeve because: I was afraid of dumping (but...I dump anyway) I wanted to continue using NSAIDs (but...I ended up not needing them anymore anyway) I was personally freaked out a bit by the re-routing of my intestines (but...not cutting out my stomach? lol) I DID NOT have GERD. I only had a choice between sleeve and bypass cuz those were the only ones covered by my insurance, so I didn't consider any other procedure. I think that one's results with WLS has more to do with the person, than with the type of surgery. I'm convinced I would have had the same result if I had the bypass. But that's just me. Some background and current statuses: I'm 5'2", almost 50yr old female, started off at 235 lbs at the beginning of my 2 week pre-op diet...2.5 years ago. I got to goal of 127 lbs in 7 months (108 lbs lost at that time). I settled into 115 lbs by 10 months post-op and stayed there basically since...but not without a bit of effort on my part. 3 times I got up to 120 lbs for a few consecutive days, and subsequently made efforts to get back down to 115. And 4-5 times I went sub-110 lbs for a few consecutive days, but didn't have to make any effort at all to get back to 115, go figure. This morning I was 109.2 lbs. I consumed very little calories during weight loss phase, and exercised regularly starting month 3 (running/walking mostly, and minimal strength training daily). No complications, nor issues other than those expected (dump with sugar, foamies/chest pressure if I eat too much or too fast, need to barf if I drink with my meals, burp like a teenage boy) At 2.5 years out, up until a month ago, I was averaging around 1800 cals a day with regular exercise (running & strength training 4-5 times a week). Currently I'm playing around with calories as I'm sidelined on the exercise front, which explains my lower weight these days cuz I haven't figured it out yet. I mostly eat salads (by choice, I LOOOVE salads!) , but I also eat desserts, spicy stuff, fried stuff, fatty stuff, drink coffee, alcohol and carbonated water. On rare occasions I eat bread or potatoes, but I don't eat rice nor regular pasta. I max out at about 1 to 1.5 cups of food per sitting (more if its salad) My lab results have consistently been uneventful (my last one was in November last year). So....so far so good. I have no illusions that I will be like this forever...but that's on me, not my sleeve.
  14. I agree with the previous posters. The first week/s out from surgery are the hardest an it will gradually improve as time goes on. I had surgery in November and can now drink about 20 ounces in 20 minutes. Definitely not like I could drink before surgery but I feel that I am at a reasonable pace now. When I am driving, I find it a great time to drink. I take a sip or two when I am at a red light or whenever I have a chance. I haven't been driving often but it has helped me to make sure I get my fluids in on days that I do drive a lot.
  15. I converted from VSG to RYGB in October 2020. Recovery was similar, yet different. I had a lot of vomiting following VSG, but less with the bypass. I am one of the 30% who experience dumping, but as catwoman7 explained, it is totally controllable by watching what I eat. In fact, I'm almost 5 months post-op and even the dumping appears to have improved (or I've figured out the triggers!). I can tell you that I don't get that immediate sense of restriction like I did with the sleeve. At this point in my recovery, my body seems to know when to stop eating before I get the pain and discomfort associated with overeating. All I can really offer is my advise based upon my outcome. I am so happy that I had the surgery. Like you, I has the surgery to correct my stomach and esophagus issues. But I've lost 47 pounds, I feel great, I can sleep through the night without acid reflux and I look and feel 10 years younger. Don't let fear of surgery and complications limit your decision to improve your health and daily living.

Making the surgery choice, which one?

I don't think there's a difference between the amount of food sleeve patients can eat vs. bypass patients. I have no problem with dinners out. The first few months you're not taking in very much food regardless of which surgery you have - but after that, your volume becomes more "normal". I eat about the same amount as my "light eating" never-been-obese women friends do - no one would be able to tell I had surgery at this point (and wouldn't have been able to tell for a long time - after the first few months, anyway). I've eaten dinners out hundreds of time since surgery. Also, you need to take supplements with VSG, too. Our clinic has both types of patients on the exact same vitamin regimen. Some clinics have the VSG patients taking fewer vitamins, but they still have to take them.
  17. Hi, I have just stumbled across this forum and thank god I did as I am hoping to get some help. I has a the Sleeve surgery in 2009 and then had a SADI or SIPS Bypass ( I think that is the technical term for it) in June 2017. I am in Australia and they were just starting to use the SADI option so didn't have a huge amount of feedback available. After having the sleeve surgery done I was diagnosed with an auto immune condition Lupus (obviously not from the surgery). So after years of pred/steroids to treat my condition I had started putting weight back on so had the bypass done. When I had the surgery, everything went ok with that part, however from them moving my Pancreas I ended up with acute Pancreatitis and was stuck in hospital for almost a month. Anyhow fast forward to 2018 when I would consider myself completely healed from the surgery, I started having a lot of gastric symptoms like bloating, excessive gas, sometimes diarrhea sometimes constipation that would come and go. I put it down to everything just getting used to the surgery. However, the past 18 months or more the symptoms have become progressively worse and after having all types of scans, faecal samples done, this test and that test and trying different treatments and diets I have finally had it with all the doctors as the cant give me an answer and now just put it down to my Lupus! The last "diagnosis" from different GI's was Chronic Pancreatitis (which my Lupus specialist says its not) and SIBO. But after changing to different diets and trying courses of antibiotics etc there is still no pattern and still no answers! I AM MISERABLE! I live each day in chronic pain but to add this to my health problems has been devastating to my mental health. I have basically become a recluse (I just turned 40) because if my Lupus isn't playing up I still cant leave the house because of these ongoing Gastro issues and I am so over it. Bellow are all the symptoms i have, some at different time depending on how bad it is and there is no pattern as to when it comes and goes or how long it lasts. I was wondering if anyone that has had SADI surgery experienced anything like this and if so were you able to fix it? Diarrhoea Constipation Excessive foul smelling Flatulence Severe Bloating (I can wake up with a flattish tummy and by late afternoon it looks like I am 8 months pregnant and my tummy is rock hard) Abdominal discomfort Pale coloured stools Steatorrhea Foul smelling stools Nausea weight fluctuation Malabsorption So that is most of what I can think of right now, but I am really hoping I can find some answers as I am just existing not living Thanks....desperate poster
  18. I was reading an old posts regarding calorie requirements after gastric bypass. I am five weeks post op and can eat 800 calories a day. I get 100 grams of protein and all my water in. My carbs are staying at 20 or less. My weight loss feels slow although overall I’m not really sure it is. Maybe my expectations are right. I started at 257 day of surgery and five weeks out i have lost 22 lbs. I haven’t always followed the diet above. Early on I ate much more carbs but last week upped my protein and cut my carbs. Fats also increased of course and this caused some increase in calories. The past post I read were encouraging people to eat more calories and even to get up to 1000 as soon as possible and stay low carb and weight would come off. People also encouraged it bc it helps your metabolism they said which helps with the weight loss. But I am still afraid my calories are too high and feel weird bc I can eat much more than the two tablespoons my nurse told me I should be eating at means. But if I ate like she said I’d definitely take in way less that 800 calories a day. also thought 320 of my calories are still from protein shakes. So like around 500 calories is food. What are thoughts around this?
  19. I had the sleeve in 2017, and revised to bypass in December 2020 due to GERD and weight regain. Since the bypass in December I have lost 25kg (55 lbs). - current weight 187 lb. Weight loss for me now seems to be slower then the first time around, however I am ok with that. Since my revision I also have had NO more symptoms of GERD. Am so happy I was able to ge this revision, weight is steadily coming off. Hope this helps a bit

    Anyone getting sleeved 3/22?

I’m scheduled for bypass on March 22nd!!!

    Depression

I was sleeved before my revision. It took a little bit, but I enjoyed everything you listed. It's why I wanted bypass in the beginning because I needed something to really help me with that. I'm not typical. Wasn't a big eater before sleeve or after. A regular day for me was 700 calories, but I drank my calories, lol. Mostly in coffee. I could drink coffee all day & be fine, then maybe a little bit of steak w/ veggies for dinner. But if we were on vacation, forget it, I would eat ALL the things. I could still eat everything I did pre sleeve, after the sleeve. It was just that waiting period waiting for my sleeve to heal. I LOVE sparkling water, and I keep picking up a can and staring at it, lol. My sleeve recovery was super easy. You'll do great!

    Endoscopy and Sleeve?

Catwoman is dead right about the risk of GERD with sleeve. That said...if your GERD is being caused by a hiatal hernia and you have it repaired with your sleeve surgery...it can result in resolving the GERD. This was the case for me...I had awful acid reflux, but since surgery have not had any. So...it's individual. I avoided Gastric Bypass because people in my family are prone to iron deficiency, and taking heavy iron supplements makes me super nauseated. I have a relative who had gastic bypass who continues to significantly struggle with iron and a few other trace nutrients. It's a catch 22. Weigh the risks and benefits specific to your situation. Getting the endoscopy will give you more information to work with. In the end, you try to get the best information you can....line up the best doctor you can (can't hurt to get a couple of opinions)...and take your chances. No guarantees. Best wishes.

    Endoscopy and Sleeve?

I wouldn't do the lapband at all, and I'm surprised your surgeon still does them. Few surgeons do those anymore and lots of people have had theirs removed because of complications. if you have GERD, just know that it gets worse for about 30% of sleeve patients. You may be OK with that amount of risk - I was not, so I went with bypass. Bypass usually (but not always) improves if not outright cures GERD. Having GERD won't prohibit you from getting the sleeve, though - but just know your risk if you do have it and you decide to proceed with the sleeve. Sometimes it can be medically managed, but we do see a fair amount of revisions to bypass on here if the GERD gets really severe (and again, that doesn't happen to most people - but it does happen to some..) P.S. Malabsorption issues aren't common with bypass AS LONG AS people are consistent about taking their vitamins. There are some people who can't absorb iron very well from oral supplements, so they need to go in for occasional infusions, but most of us absorb iron from pills just fine. As far as other nutrients, again, as long as you keep on top of your vitamin regimen, problems are rare.

    Random Pre-op Questions

I had bypass and also got the painkiller injected around the incisions in the hospital. I was surprised at how little pain I had afterwards--I didn't even need any pain medication.

    How long to feel normal

Not sure which surgery you are having. With bypass, I was up and about within a day and could get around the house without any trouble. However, you will be exhausted and should not be lifting anything for a while, but your wife shouldn't need to take care of you.
