Removal Of X-Tra Stomach?
iggychic replied to ConnieSings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In a worst case scenario of needing additional calories, I've been through it with my son who was FTT for three years with chronic malabsorption due to diarrhea. There are ways to get small amounts of highly nutritional calorie laden fluids in your body. For him, he had small amounts of special formulas every hour 24/7. In addition there are very easy to absorb calorie additives that can be put into foods. Needing "more stomach" just isn't necessary in today's medical world so let that one go . -
PRE-OP NEWBIE- Surgery is MONDAY August 3rd! NEED EXPERT ADVICE!
Live4life posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I'm a 31 female from NY who's been struggling with her weight since childhood. I've tried every diet you can name of. I'm sure we all can relate to it. However, now I have high blood pressure and I'm pre-diabetic, which scares me because my grandfather died from complications from diabetes. I'm so apprehensive because like all other "tools" or diets I've failed. Also, I've seen on here that a lot of people weren't full until they received their first adjustment. That is just too scary! I've lost 11 pounds on the liquid diet for the last 10 days. Basically, I'm asking what did you consume that had enough Protein that kept you full, and also assisted in your weightloss for the first 4-6 weeks? I can't imagine being able to drink my protein replacement shakes that are 8ounces and have 27grams of protein since, they say you can only sip 2 ounces at once. If you have any tips or foods you suggest, please advise, as I will be going shopping this weekend. Thanks from your, SCARED PREOP NEWBIE PS: I heard that sometimes food gets stuck and you should eat a scoop of butter? TRUE OR NOT? [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:4417] -

Post gastric sleeve surgery
RickM replied to nicolejahan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The 30 minutes before rule that some impose doesn't make a lot of sense after the first few weeks, but the 30 minutes after does make sense long term. Drinking during or soon after a meal tends to wash the food through the stomach rather than allowing it to stay there and be digested more slowly, keeping you fuller longer - this is particularly the case with the bypass which removes the pyloric valve from the system, leaving basically a funnel (pouch) between the esophagus and intestine, but still works somewhat the same with a sleeve with the pyloric valve intact. Even years post-op it is not comfortable drinking much for a while after a meal (though I may sip a bit during if something is dry.) Before a meal with an empty stomach, it doesn't matter much whether you drink or not, as any fluids you drink flow right through fairly quickly. During the initial couple of weeks or so, you may or may not have significant inflammation in your stomach such that fluids only trickle through (if that) which is why we sip, sip, sip rather than drink normally. We want to leave some time to make sure that whatever we had been drinking has had a chance to move on through. So, once you get to the point of being able to drink fairly normally, there is little reason to stop drinking before a meal. -

I also had a 3 week pre-op diet and it wasn't as bad as I imagined. I had a kind of similar diet to yours - I had to do slim fast shakes, plus I had sodium-free clear broth, fat-free sugar-free pudding etc. The first few days were difficult. I stayed inside a lot because I was afraid if I went out I'd want to eat (I live in the middle of a city and when I walk out the door there is food calling to me EVERYWHERE lol). After the first 3-4 days, it wasn't a problem and it was SO encouraging to see the weight coming off so fast. That was my motivation. I also really didn't want any complications at all with my surgery (including waking up just to find out I wasn't able to get the band). I am glad I stuck with it, because my surgery went well, and I'm feeling great now! Good luck, you will do great!! -
Cleared by cardio all I have left is pulmonary next week. I'm having cold feet! Everyone including doctors are looking at me like you can do this on your own.. You don't need surgery!!! Ugh I'm so confused!

Good Afternoon, After 4 phone calls made today @ 9:15am, 11:15am, 1:15am & 3:15pm, I was politely informed on the last call, that the Scheduler was off today. One would think that they'd advise me of that from the initial call @ 9:15am.. {Say WHAT?!?!?} All is well. I will tenaciously try to schedule my Sleeve date on Monday... :tongue2: Have a wonderful weeked everyone!

bambam31 replied to lellow's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Had my son's first birthday party this week and that made things a bit tough with all the leftover cake and ice cream. I was also sick with the crud for a few days which caused me to miss a few gym classes. All in all, I was still able to post a decent loss, beat my Valentines Day challenge, and get back on track! Last Week: 188 This Week: 185 Change: Minus 3 Have a good week everyone! Brad -

Has anyone had the band done with a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus from acid reflux? I was going to have the band done in two weeks, but just had the upper GI done and found this out. Have not talked with my barriatric surgeon yet, waiting for some tests to come back. I really think the RNY is more drastic than I want to loose weight. I have Tricare for my insurance and they will not pay for VSG, you have to have it done at a MTF. The cut off age for the MTF in my area to do a VSG is 55 and I am 58. I was wondering if Tricare would pay for VSG if other two surgeries are not an option. Probably not.

Barrett's Esophagus
tabithainbremerton replied to Regnu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My brother and I both have Barrettes esophagus and have been banded. No problems. The best thing in that regard is you probably wont have heartburn afterwards, which can worsen your barrette's. You know if you take Nexium or another Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) you can actually reverse it's effect... as it can be a pre-curser to cancer... He was banded a few years ago, me just 2 weeks ago- neither one of us had any problems, especially r/t that disease. Hope this help! Tabby. -
Weightloss before surgery
orionburn replied to brandiddy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some times eating less of something that's no so good for you is still bad for you even if you reduce the portions. Have you tried doing a food journal yet? A lot of "healthy" meals I was eating weren't so healthy. It isn't that they were bad per se, but there were way more calories in them than I thought. Doing a journal can be a pain, but it is well worth it to see exactly where you're at with calories. Little things can add up quickly, such as condiments, salad dressings, etc. Those little things could make or break you for a day and you may not realize it. Second thing is do not stress as much about the scale. It isn't uncommon to see fluctuations in weight depending on how much Water you've had, time of day, etc. My weight goes back and forth all the time. The scale can be your worst enemy so don't get caught up weighing throughout the day. It's better to way yourself once a week at the same time. Try bumping up your activity level. Try to walk a little bit faster, find an area that has more hills and is more challenging, or try mixing in weights if you aren't already. Don't get discouraged. Starting out is rough. -
How soon after surgery can you fly in a plane? My daughters are going to stay at their grandparents house 3 states away while I have the surgery. Do you think I could fly to pick them up after only 3 weeks post surgery?

Recent Dr. K experiences please...
paracelsus51 replied to bigpops's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, I am from outside of Colorado. My insurance excludes any weight loss treatment (which is funny, as they now have this "wellness" program where we are supposed to talk to our doctor and nutritionist about diet, but we can't because it's excluded). The cost here was nearly $5000 more than Dr. K. After doing a LOT of research around the country and Mexico. Dr. K does not offer the BLIS insurance. You can call around to find a place that will treat you after the surgery. You will need a post op check up and fills at some point. Usually not for 4 to 6 weeks. I went to the local surgeon's office for follow up and I recommend that no one ever go to their office. I should note a couple things, one is that I have GERD, so that is why I did it. My stomach is very sensitive. They gave me a fill at four weeks to accommodate the doctor's schedule even though I never saw him, just an assistant who did the fill. They have a schedule for everyone that is exactly the same and if you don't fit that, it's your fault that you inconvenienced them. I was having no problems beforehand and after too much fill I had to have a complete unfill. I, even at 9 months, have no fill at all. I now go to the next town over to the University Med center. They actually take the time to figure out what is best for you. So, after that book, sorry, didn't mean to make this so long, what I am saying is that you need to make sure that whatever place you choose, that they don't have a schedule they go by, but make an individual plan for you. You make need a fill every few weeks or months. Don't rush it. Even with no fill I have lost more than 50 pounds. Another thing is that, and Dr. K will talk to you about this, is that most places fill to the point where Fluid backs up into your esophagus. He does not believe in this. Just because fluid goes through quickly, doesn't mean solids will. In my case, any fluid back up will cause a reflux attack, so I may never be able to have a fill again. So, give real thought and planning to your aftercare. I spent so much time on finding the right surgeon, I didn't even realize how important the long term aftercare is. I should have talked to some people about the local office and asked more questions. Hindsight and all that. -
i am on week 5 and this happened to me last week. DR told me it is your protein intake. I turned to the puree stage and was unable to hit my protein goal cuz i was distracted by "new foods" the moment i upped my protein intake the pain on my incision site wen taway

I am 4 weeks post-op from sleeve and on Thursday started having extreme pain at main incision site. If I bend in that direction pain is so bad brings tears. Doesn't feel like the gas I had prior. Can't sleep, can't get comfortable. Pain when I go to sit down or get up. Going to Dr tomorrow for follow up but has anyone else experienced this? Can't even bend over to put on shoes. I haven't posted in a long time in this group. I was 211.7 this morning. Same as last week.

I'm about 2.5 weeks out and I started purees and soft foods on Thursday and so far it is going well. I am terrified about heaving or vomiting so I've been super cautious. I take about 3-4 minutes between tiny bites and chew like crazy (although, it's mostly purees, so "chewing"). However, I find that I'm not feeling any restriction and have been stopping meals after about 45 minutes. In that time, I'm eating maybe 3 tablespoons of food. I am trying to decide what indicates a good stopping point. Again, I don't feel fullness or have pain or hiccups. I also feel like I should be getting more calories than I'm getting right now (~400-500) because my energy level is crazy low. Any thoughts?

Hey liquidbluegal, I just wanted to introduce myself b/c I noticed we had a few things in common. I am 27, my highest weight was 235 and my goal is 140. I was just banded on June 13th. I will be getting my first fill on Monday and very excited about it. I've lost 11 lbs in the first 2 weeks after surgery but haven't lost anymore since. I am worried about the flabby skin also but think the best thing to do is exercise. I am joining the gym tomorrow. Do you know if you are allowed to have alcohol with the band? Nice to meet you, fntasa98 (Jessica)

I actually haven't told many people outside of my immediate family. Maybe 10 tops - I was pretty careful about who I told. Luckily, so far everyone's been positive. Since I've only been losing 2-3 lbs a week (except for the first month), I may just tell others who ask that I'm doing it through diet and exercise. I'm just not sure I want it out. yes - his info may be old. Years ago these were fairly risky surgeries - but not anymore.

Hi. My name is Selene and I had my surgery on Jan 16, 2013. I have lost 30 lbs so far but it has been like a week that I have not lost anything else. I am a bit concerned. Do you think that is normal. I am in the puree stage for one more week and then I'm off to starting to eat. I have no idea where to begin. Any suggestions are welcomed.

So happy for you. I know exactly how you feel. I received my phone call a week and a half ago, and I had that same reaction. I start my pre-op diet on Wednesday, surgery on 12/30. I wish you the best of luck!

Pureeing foods
fatontheinside replied to pvechiola's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't waste the money... You're not going to be on pureed foods that long anyway...only a few weeks so just use your blender. I might invest in one of those stick blenders/wands...the ones that stand up...but those are versatile... -
