I've been craving bad food ALL the time since my surgery. But I find since I am at the beginning stage of recovery I get full quickly. Once I have a protein shake or something healthy that I'm supposed to eat the hunger quickly goes away and I no longer crave the bad foods.

shortgal replied to hollyberries's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
B'fast: One packet regular instant oatmeal with 1/2 packet apple & cinnamon oatmeal made with Water and topped with 3 tbs of skim milk. Lunch: Lean Cuisine: Ground beef with elbow macaroni. Cup of tea Bottle of Special K Protein water. Dinner: 1/2 slice Turkey meatloaf, 1/2 stuffed shell and 4 tbs rice. I like this thread. It gives me some ideas of foods to try. I am such a chicken and afraid to try out my band on certain foods. Have yet to eat a single nut! FEAR! But it keeps me in check. -

Are you still getting in your protein every day? -
I am NOT trying to discourage you... Just sharing.... I went through the same thing with Cigna(open access plus), and after all was said and done they still denied my appeal after the 6mo and all paperwork from dr saying I needed it! They said jut because my BMi was higher than their minimum, I didn't have a "health risk", stating diabetic & high blood pressure. My response included the fact that I'm next in line for those things and my medical will be used for sure for a very long time for care and even heart and cholesterol issues and so so on... Another month went by and another denial! My resolution was a $20k medical loan and my sleeve was done 2-13! At some point (2years), I had to bite the bullet and take care of what I knew I needed!!! Now... I hope hope hope your outcome is successful. And if not that you have options!!! Just wanted u to prepare... Good luck!!!

I had my first fill exactly one month after surgery, with absolutely no problems. I barely felt the fill (4 cc) & was glad to be on liquids for 2 days afterwards, as I really didn't feel like eating much. Like Cathy, I had to drink water before leaving the dr's office. I had my 2nd fill (1 cc) last Thurs, and agin, was not really hungry afterwards, and happy to just have liquid protein for a few days.

dietician advice 'no shakes'????
untfluter replied to lavender714's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have my protein shake every morning for breakfast... ever since my fill in like August I have been too tight in the morning to eat.. but I control the calories because I use Pure Protein shake mix, it is Whey and has 25 gr of protein and I mix it w/Skim milk, another 9 grams of protein, some ice and some low fat peanut butter, more protein... and that holds me for several hours.... -
Yep, my doctor's office is in the eat-your-protein camp, too. They do concede that supplements can be useful on days when eating is tough. And they're okay with substituting a shake for one meal a day. Or to reach Protein goals when they seem unattainable. The latter is how I rationalize my continued use of 1-2 per day. I really don't get enough protein, otherwise. I am sure they'd frown on this...but I don't really see how to stick with ALL their recommendations, otherwise. Something has to give--either I use them and get enough protein, or I don't, and don't.

I can't get protein, I'm lactose intolerant, I had hunger pains, I hear weird noises from my stomach. My hair is thin, I'm tired all of the time. I miss popcorn, pizza, grilled cheese, and wings. But guess what? I love "Stacey" that's what I call my sleeve. I've lost 24lbs so far. I'm 12 days out. HW242, CW218, GW: 2BASize8. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal mobile app -
Im feeling like a failure...already
Lysbelle replied to Amburmist's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's hard the first week (and I'm sure beyond)- I feel you! People lose at different rates, no one person will be the same. Take the victory- you've lost! I know it is difficult- I have had doubts the past week, but I keep pushing along because that's what is going to get the weight off me! Also, make sure you are taking in enough protein and walking! I don't know what your surgeon wants, but mine has instructed us to sip on 8oz of high protein (like premier or isopure) between meals and then switch to water. That way, we are getting in the proper amount of protein a day. I hope that helps! You can do it! -

@Amburmist Comparison is the thief of satisfaction. ((hugs)) It's a b***h, really. I watched my 600lb life and that's kinda sorta what made me really get off the pot and do something about my "growing" situation. (I was gaining like nobody's beeswax.) And for the longest time, I was eating like a couple of protein drinks and 2 spinach leaves and not losing. I was like "what the eff?" How are these people eating Big Macs and Krispy Kremes and still managing to lose 15-25lbs a month? I was sooo mad, it made me go to the doc. I'm still not tearing up the streets with my losses, but they have been slow and relatively steady. LOL, I have pretty much quit watching M6PL, cuz I don't want to break my tv by throwing a chair into it, and it's even harder not to compare myself to the fabulous successes here on the boards, but every day you work your plan, is a day closer to your personal success story. Hang loose Mother Goose! -
This may sound negative to some, but... I have been researching weight loss surgery for about 2 years and just recently decided lap band is the right option for me. Looks like I am tentatively scheduled for 9/27/13 to be banded. However, even though I am ready for this - I know it's only a tool. The weight won't magically fall off, I'm still worried that it won't work for me. I still will have to deal with pre-op diet, post-op diet, and exercise BEFORE the fills. So many other diets have failed, if i could stick to eating healthy and exercise, i wouldn't have this problem with weight. Right? I understand that post-op I won't have much appetite but what about the rest? Anyone want to jump in here and tell me I'm not alone feeling this way?

You can do it if that's what you want. It took me a while to want it, and then I could commit. I just started walking. I'm walking 3.5 miles outdoors. Doesn't cost me a dime, but I did get a heat rash in the summer and now I'm like brrrr, but I keep on walking. Get a walking tape for indoors if you really can't make yourself walk outside. I think walking sheds weight faster than most exercises. Exercises are good for building muscle which Im going to need to get to, but putting that off. If you are hungry grab some Protein, a piece of rolled up ham, cheese once in a while, fry and egg in pam, etc. I even have a box of SF popsicles in my freezer, not my favorite thing, but I do what I need to. I do admit to cheating tonight, went to a pizza party, but only ate one and a half pieces. I also skipped lunch to do it. Its will power and if you want to do it enough, you will.

I had my surgery on 5/20/08, I have not had any problems with nausea or vomitting but it seems as if I can eat too much. When I drink my protein shake, I have to force myself to slow down, I can finish the whole thing in 10 mins and not feel full. Also, I still have to sleep in the recliner-I tried to sleep in bed but coildn't move once I got in and forget about getting out. I have a pain between the port incision and the middle one. When I move the wrong way it feels like a ripping, burning pain. Has anyone else had anything similar? Thanks for your input.

This is all very interesting. I know there are times... LOTS of times that if I listen to what my body wants, I eat too much, and of the wrong things. Now maybe this is not my body talking, its my head, but really they are connected at the neck, and have something to do with each other. I have spent quite a bit of time analyzing the cause and effect of what I eat - to how I feel... and I find that when I eat some kinds of food I may generally love how they taste, and like putting them in my mouth, and like the immediate feeling it produces... through my shoulders and chest of all places, but what is missing is satisfaction. I'm not talking about feeling full. There is something I am looking for that I don't usually get from food...satisfaction. Like, Im finished now. I feel fine, I got the energy from the food now... or something like that. Perhaps this is partly what people call emotional eating. I think emotions may be part of the picture sometimes for me, but not always. The satisfaction I crave feels more physical. When I really look close at the/my overeating experience, this is missing almost all the time. I realize I don't really like the taste of the food that much... the taste is not enough for me to be satisfied. Its like I'm not getting the basic nutrition I crave or something. Now I think this is where the addiction label comes into the picture. That craving for satisfaction. I just look for it in the food over and over again. Some types of food really heighten this experience...you all know what they are.... refined carbs... sugar, the "whites" High Fructose.... Its not the fats, its not the protein, its not even the whole grains and carbby vegs in moderation. The only time I get satisfied, is when I cut them out. And I need to cut them out for at least 3 weeks before I feel the satisfaction creep in. When I do this, then the size of the meal goes down, and the pounds start to slide off, and I can start to trust what my body/head asks for. However I make myself eat protein snacks even then, because if I let myself get too hungry, the chance of the old habits to reach for the easy donut are a little easier, and I just don't want to go there and start the cycle again.

I initially had a big loss too and then stalled for a few weeks. Once I started increasing protein I was full longer so I didn't have a need so much for carbs. And the big thing for me was started an exercise program- that really got my weight loss going again. Are you exercising? I think our bodies also have to adjust for a while when we drop weight all of the sudden so fast, so it tries to hold on to calories for a bit. But is all evened out for me after a few weeks and I started to see the pounds drop again.

Hi, I'm pre-op and have been using a whey-based Protein powder for my Breakfast in the a.m.'s. Does anybody know of -- perhaps actually even used -- a brand of vegan Protein Powder for shakes that meets your surgeon's nutritional requirements? I don't know if anything like this exists, but if it does I'd like to know about it. Thanks, corgiqueen

I have problems with the lactose in whey-based Protein powders, so I went to my local health-food store and looked for a protein powder without whey in it. I found a protein powder by NutriBiotic that says Vegan right on the front label. It's called Vegan Rice Protein. I buy it in chocolate and vanilla--I like it just fine. It's not as high in protein as whey-based protein powders, but here's what the nutritional label says for one heaping Tbsp: Calories 55 Fat 0.3 g Cholesterol 0 mg Sodium 8 mg Carbohydrates 1.8 g Protein 12 g Adding it to soymilk would probably bring up the grams of protein enough to make it competitive with the whey-based protein powders. My nutritionist was fine with me using this protein powder pre-op (especially because I was throwing up the whey-based protein drinks!), but wanted me to make extra sure that I take a Multivitamin along with this if I use it as a Meal Replacement now--because it isn't a significant source of Vitamins and minerals. Good luck!

I'm not against veganism or vegetarianism, but I'm quite suprised that your doctor would recommend something so drastic right away. Though I'm glad she didn't automatically slap meds on the problem right away, too! I agree with ElfiPoo; some research on your part could be of benefit, possibly some changes in your diet, but if you don't want to be a vegan, you don't have to be--that is not the only option to lower your cholesterol.

HELP Three days post op and hungry!
truediva replied to KELLIJAMES's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
milkshakes are all baaaaaaaaaaad. You can however get a high protein shake. I drink the world wide pure protein (at trader joes) or any other variety that tastes good. 3 days post opt I was starving so I made a very small bowl of cream of wheat and surpriselingly enough that did the trick:thumbup: -
If you have surgery in Mexico, what happens when you need a fill?
Guest posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have heard people flying to Mexico for fills, but what other things are your option? -
As my doc gave me rules..... each doc is different.... No drinking 30 min or so before meals/and no drinking at meals/or 1 hour after meals... eat only three small meals daily... stop eating with first faint signs of satisfaction/fullness-- DO NOT take one more bite... always eat Protein first, then veggies, and last are carbs... eat only "good" foods/like good for you foods.... low or no cal. beverages between meals/ like no milkshakes etc.... THERE ARE 6 TO START WITH... I CAN'T THINK OF THEM ALL RIGHT NOW(it's late, lol) Good Luck getting back on track, hope the tightness is nothing to worry about.

I have had the Lap Band for two years now, I did great for the first year and a half but I seem to be at a stand still. I need some help making better decisions I think. I am at a good restriction right now maybe even a little too tight. I find that I eat once maybe twice a day and it is usually just snack foods. I know I am not making very good decisions in my food choices. I am having a hard time eating breakfast because it seems like when I wake up I can't eat anything for many hours which I know is killing my metabolism. Does anyone have any ideas how I can make healthier choices and what foods I should try. It seems like some days meats are okay for me but most days eating anything is a bit of a struggle. I have lost 100lbs so far but I would still like to lose about 40 lbs more and I have been at a stand still since my last fill. I have tried the protein shakes as well but after a couple I cant seem to stand them! does anyone have any good recipes or any ideas at all that I can do to help my weight loss start again? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
