    Constantly in pain

You should be able to still contact the team. Did they give you an email or a phone number to call?? I would think that any doctor would be able to make sure that you are healing okay and know if something was wrong. I mean you are on day 17 it’s not unheard of for people to still be in pain but it should be at least getting better. ooh are you saying a text is all you can do physically or all you can do to contact them? Because if you describe what you are feeling and they just say to get your water and protein then it sounds like they think you are okay. if you just want peace of mind though your family dr should know if something was wrong.

    over preparing??

I had my surgical consultation in January - and I probably started preparing in February. We have a stable income, but it isn't huge. So, I knew I wasn't going to be able to just plunk down a big chunk of change after surgery, getting all the things I needed. I have had to try to think ahead and buy a few things each month. I bought stuff for the hospital: a robe (was useful), abdominal binder (used for 2 days after getting home), long phone charging cable (never used, I just made sure my phone was charged before going in), and a heating pad (only tried to use after getting home). I bought stuff for post-op recovery at home: lots of different protein soups, some shakes, broths, unflavored protein powder. I made a couple of different flavors of Jell-O and bought some snack packs. Over the last few months I had made several batches of bone broth to put in the freezer. I bought liquid adult Tylenol. I bought stuff for use later on: long-handled, metal measuring scoops - 2, 4, 6 and 8 oz. Eight-oz bowls. Small-diameter plates. Little 2.5oz jars of baby food - I will try the food, but really only wanted the jars. Souper Cubes for freezing leftovers (I also used them for freezing my broth). Baby spoons. I got a 30-second and a 3-minute sand timer, for timing between bites. I got an electric mug warmer and I've really appreciated that one. I bought a couple of small Yeti tumblers, but there has been a delay in shipping so I haven't been able to use them yet. The hope is that they will be able to replace the mug warmer, when I'm in my office, or something. Thus far, I am happy with all of my purchases. Something that I am now buying is underwear - of all things. For the last several years I've been wearing the "granny panties" high waisted briefs. Well, the way my surgeon did my incisions, is in a line, all going across the top of my belly - right where the elastic of my underwear sits. So, I'm having to buy bikini style undies, because folding the top of my underwear down is annoying. In the days before my surgery, I tried to get as much gardening done as I could. I made sure that all the laundry was done and I did a little cleaning. I wasn't able to do as much as I wanted, because there were two sabbaths. I only had one day between my last day of work and the day of surgery that I could get stuff done. It was unfortunate timing.

    Protein Shakes

To me they didn’t cause nausea but they tasted overly sweet. I had better luck with the clear protein drinks early out.
  6. Personally I wouldn’t want to try anything new on Christmas and risk spending half the day feeling sick. You can in theory puree anything though. I have a thing with consistency so I stuck to things that are supposed to be that way like mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes. I have heard a lot of people doing pumpkin purée at thanksgiving but I would wonder about the sugar in that (may want to check with your team). They also come up with a lot of seasonal yogurts and protein shakes that could help satisfy the need for something festive.

    Dumping?

It's probably contraindicated for you to eat proteins and proteins, that's why it got bad, although I'm not sure.

    Has your relationship changed?

mine got better. My husband is pretty active, and when I weighed over 300 lbs, I could barely keep up with him - and now I can. We enjoy doing a lot of activities together - like biking, walking, and kayaking - that I couldn't do before. I agree with the person who said that strong relationships tend to get stronger and weaker ones sometimes fall apart. That does seem to be a common pattern (although of course, not always). I think with the weak ones, they sometimes fail because the person who's had surgery develops more self-confidence and has more options - they're no longer "stuck" in an iffy relationship because they're afraid its their only option.

    Protein Shakes

I love the Fairlife and Premier Protein shakes. I also don't mind the Muscle Milk brand either. I prefer to make my own though with protein powder and water and/or milk.

    Feeling Stuck

I too have been having this issue over the last month as well. I think it happens to all of us. As many people have commented here, it's a physical operation we went under, the behavior side is up to us. Just try to focus on filling yourself with foods you know should be, getting your protein in and hitting your water intake. You can have the so called "junk" foods in moderation. However, I think as a whole, our community is just as guilty as others at labeling food, i.e. "junk", "healthy", etc. Too much of anything is bad for us good or not. Psychologically, we have to get away from that thinking. Food is food, plain and simple. I too am trying to embody what I just said. Food is food, period. Best of luck to you.

    Feeling Stuck

Oh, it's such a battle isn't it?! I also tolerate carbs very well and it's the thorn in my side too. I have made an agreement with myself that I can have a carby snack every day - usually in the evening when the children have gone to bed. I'll have a salted caramel nut bar or a small bowl of baked crisps (chips). You've lost over 10lbs a month on average... that's pretty good going. Maybe you're already at the weight you're meant to be? Are you still tracking protein and calories?
  12. Thank you everyone. I've decided to take the Fusion Bariatric multivitamin chew, they taste way better and are easy to get down. I've also found the Fairlife 30 grams protein shakes that taste way better than Premier. I've been able to drink those down as well. I'm happy now and feel as if I am doing a good job.

Low BMI obesity gastric sleeve option

As SpartanMaker pointed out, the medical criteria recommendations have changed. The original article is here: https://www.soard.org/article/S1550-7289(22)00641-4/fulltext. Depending on the specifics of your metabolic disease, you might qualify in the near future. If you are of Asian descent, BMI ≥25 suggests clinical obesity, and individuals with BMI ≥27.5 could soon be offered surgery as well. But it may take some time before the insurance companies adopt these recommendations. In the meantime, you will likely have to pay out of pocket. If you are willing to pay cash, you should look at other options first. My starting BMI was also <35, so I would not have qualified even if I wanted surgery. I opted for less invasive ESG (endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty -- do look it up on Google, Instagram, YouTube, etc.). It is still pretty drastic, but it is far less risky, effective, and with quick recovery. I have had people ask me "Why?" in that tone (you know the one!) because I did not look fat, I carried it well. I did it for many of the health reasons the ASMBS cites in that article, and which you mention regarding your own health. Bottom line...I want to live! I want to be around to play with my grandchildren someday. I am only 50, but I could see the writing on the wall (or rather, the life expectancy charts...). Maybe if you phrase it that way to your wife, she will appreciate that you are doing this for your family. And if you choose a less risky procedure, she may get on board. Best of luck to you!

    Head hunger.

so far my favorite head hunger snack is just making a sauce cup of PBfit protein peanut butter! It tastes just like you're eating the fatty stuff but in reality its just peanut flour/powder mixed with water. My favorite! I got the original flavor & the chocolate peanut butter flavor. SO GOOD

    Carbs yes or no

My program put extreme emphasis on eating mostly protein & eating almost no carbs. Right now the ONLY carbs I'm allowing myself to eat are beans (as they also have protein) & soft fruits (paired with PBfit protein peanut butter) Granted I'm only a month out so I want to take advantage of these first months, but after like 6 months I want to start introducing more carbs in my diet. Especially low cal veggie straws & thin pretzels to carry around my bento box. As long as I still eat mostly protein it should be ok!

    Liquid Diet PO

Before my surgery I did the same and tried to stock up on all things protein! Multiple flavors, premier protein water, gatorade protein, gatorade zero, vitamin water zero, you name it... But my taste buds changed so much during those first 2 weeks. My advice is buy a single bottle of protein shakes or zero sugar drinks and see how you tolerate it first before stocking up.

Low BMI obesity gastric sleeve option

The surgery is a tool, just like using a washing machine or a calculator. It makes it easier, yes but you still have to put in the work. And the tool fades when your hunger comes back so keeping the weight off is just as hard as any maintenance plan I have ever been on with one exception IF you took the time to make real changes to your diet and habits you know what to do to keep it off this time. Having said that, this is a major surgery with real changes to you body. Many of us have chronic constipation to deal with, most of us have to take vitamins forever and I believe all of us are told to avoid NSAIDS forever (which kinda sucks when you get a headache or throw your back out and drs won’t give you pain meds for these things). These are not major things, no but evidence that this does change your body forever. The nutritionist and the bariatric therapists are two huge components to the surgery that make it successful. If you have not tried those two things you may want to consider trying those first before committing to major surgery. I had a low-ish BMI and I had the sleeve (35). I wish I had tried those things first so that I would know I absolutely had to take this extreme option. I may very well be exactly where I am but at least I would know I truly did try everything first. But ask your doctor because you have real medical issues that I did not have and maybe losing it fast is imperative. The surgery will definitely help you to lose it faster that diet alone. Best of luck in whatever you choose. And just keep talking to your wife. My husband is also someone who has always been fit and doesn’t totally get it either. He is at least supportive but he is first to admit he doesn’t understand. I once told him when he was thirsty to try not to drink anything for hours and he will have some clue what it’s like to try to ignore hunger. Not the best analogy I know but it was the best I could think of. I also recommend taking her with you to your doctor visits if/when you do decide to have surgery or while you are trying to decide. They can help explain things to her.

    Dumping?

Between the milk and the protein powder it was 7 grams of sugar

    Dumping?

dumping isn't very common in sleevers, although it could be that. It's usually caused by consuming too much sugar or fat in one sitting - I don't know how much of either would be in your protein shake. It could also be an intolerance of some sort. Hard to say...I'd just monitor it and see if it happens again.

    Dumping?

I'm 14 days post op and believe I am in the middle of my first dumping episode 😣 I drank my morning protein shake too fast and 15 minutes later my heart started racing, I'm dizzy, I felt like I needed to throw up, and my whole body got hot. I'm sitting on the bathroom floor right now waiting to throw up but nothing is happening. How long does this usually last? Lesson learned!

GERD After Revision to Bypass and Linx

From reading online, it sounds like bile comes from the liver and not acid in the stomach, so PPIs aren’t as effective at treating it and lifestyle and diet changes don’t really help as much. I actually just messaged my doctor to ask about the short roux limb as a possible cause, and will let you know what he says when he gets back to me. There is definitely some research online showing that that can be the cause, and that there’s a possible option of lengthening the roux limb as a way to resolve it. I don’t know enough about anatomy to know if that would be an option for me because my gastric bypass happened after I originally had sleeve surgery so I’m not sure if anatomically the lengthening would work. I’ll for sure report back once I learn more!
  22. Hello. I am 44y old male and I am seriously considering SG. I am 5’7 and around 195 lb. I know this is not too obese -I am in fact BMI 31- and normally bariatric surgery should not be an option. Yet, after extensive literature reading I believe it is a good option. I have high blood pressure , high cholesterol and early non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Moreover , I have been always struggling with weight issues since I was a teenager, alternating times of physical activity and good diet habits -and a relative healthy weight as a result - with bad periods of overeating and sedentary behavior. All in all, the aggregated tendency is adding up weight on the long run. My wife is highly critical of this decision, blaming me for taking the “easy way” instead of modifying my eating / physical habits. I’ve tried to explain her several times the apparent inconsistency of deeply wanting to get rid of my weight problem with the fact that it is nevertheless not easy at all. She’s naturally skinny and cannot grasp how fat/obese people relate with food. I’d love to hear from those on a similar situation. I believe it is the right step to do, but I want to hear open, sincere opinion -so not just for reaffirming my choice but rather to have well grounded , unbiased, facts for a well informed decision.

    Hunger Day of Surgery

I think it is normal. One, you haven't really eaten. You are going to feel hungry. Liquid phase is also difficult because liquids pass right though you so there is very little satiety during that phase. Once you heal and you move on to more solid foods, you may feel hungry but a very small amount of protein will satisfy you. Give it time. Congrats on your step in the right direction and good luck on your journey.

    1 week post op

I had a different sleeve procedure (ESG), but had the same fears. I thought I was feeling hunger. So I talked to my team about it, expecting the lecture. But they told me something that really opened my eyes: I have for decades interpreted every little stomach gurgle as a hunger signal. (This was part of my problem that led to my weight gain.) Time to stop and think about it first. Is this really hunger, or could it be thirst, gas, another sort of discomfort? I mean, like you I am only weeks out, so there is really no way this could be real hunger. I was told see if it responds to a sip of water. See if a sip of protein shake helps. Change position (sit/stand/turn over if in bed) to see if that makes it go away. Try a lozenge -- I had some sugar-free lemon Ricola drops because of the sore throat typical after an endoscopy. Bingo! That worked wonders! I don't know if it's an oral fixation thing, but a tiny lozenge does the trick. Here's how I know I am not really hungry: if I am working on a work project, I can go all day without feeling hunger. I am one of those that has to set a reminder to eat on my phone. So that feeling I was interpreting as hunger was something else. ("I'm not saying it was aliens, but it could have been aliens." 😁)

    October 2022 surgery support

I'm so glad to hear that you're doing better! But so sorry you haven't been able to take any pain meds. Have you tried liquid Tylenol? Maybe just take a little sip and see how it sits? I've heard that a heating pad helps with the pain. I tried one, but it was defective and kept shutting itself off after two minutes. I'm on the mend. Still having a good deal of pain, but it's definitely getting better. I hate taking narcotics, so the liquid Tylenol is saving me, right now. Thanks be to God, I haven't had any problems getting my fluids or protein in.
