Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries

I had a giant ovarian cyst removed in 2013. Like, gallon of milk giant. It had adhered to my bowels and pretty much everything it could. They nicked my bowel in 3 spots removing the cyst. (Hysterectomy in 2000 but they took both ovaries with the cyst and my gall bladder for its own reasons, I'm always a special case.) Forward to my sleeve a week ago, and my surgeon said that my bowel is adhered to my small intestine and had she been 2 inches to my left, she'd have been in my bowel. Scary thought! I joked I should get a tattoo there in case of emergency... Sounds like your surgeon is well prepared!
  2. Thought I’d share a fun pic from my 3-year surgiversary (ok, I’m one day late, but close enough). I don’t really have a good before and after set of pictures because I used to hate being in pictures and I would avoid the camera at all costs. However, I still have a pair of size 28 pants that I wore at my highest weight of 341 pounds, and yes, I can now fit my whole 135-pound body into one leg.

    July 2023 buddies?

How is everyone feeling? I'm 3 days away from surgery date. I'm scrambling to finish house work and weeding my kitchen garden before the surgery. I'm curious. My surgeon (in Southern California) sends his patients home same day. I appreciate the lower cost, but I'm a little worried. Anyone else go home same day?

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

Yes I’m only 15 weeks out and my doctor said to wait 6 months for pork and beef…when I got the chili I wasn’t thinking about the beef…so not I’m only have a little diarrhea no other symptoms

    Worried about enough protein!

The right solid food will get you a really big serving of protein. Boiled chicken, ground turkey, and definitely fresh seafood. A little goes a long way. For example, 2 oz of chicken breast is about 90 calories, 18g protein, and 0 carbs (without breading or frying of course). Also, if you have the time, you can eat small amounts 4 or 5 times a day, rather than just 3 typical meals. At the end of the day, if you haven't reached your protein goal, use a protein shake or a protein shot (3oz = 25g protein) to hit your goal. It could take a little practice. You could also create a schedule or set reminders on your phone. Using a nutrition app helps a lot. I use Baritastic. I log what I eat/drink and it helps me see where I'm at throughout the day. You'll do great!

(Hysterectomy in 2000 but they took both ovaries with the cyst and my gall bladder for its own reasons, I'm always a special case.) In 2016, 2017? I had a bowel obstruction. You will KNOW. Nausea and incredible amounts of pain over a few hours resulted in an ER trip and week long stay. Forward to my sleeve a week ago, and my surgeon said that my bowel is adhered to my small intestine and had she been 2 inches to my left, she'd have been in my bowel. Scary thought! I joked I should get a tattoo there in case of emergency... Listen to your body and advocate for yourself. I've only had 1 doctor poo poo my symptoms- and she was a female doctor, too! Had she listened, my gall bladder would have been removed in 2010.

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

Dumping can make you feel faint, weak, loopy, can cause your heart to race and even cause you to faint...if it's just diarrhea it's probably something that's a little less severe than that. Are you six months out or are you 15 weeks out? At 15 weeks, beef may be more than you can handle. At that time, I was making chili at home with ground turkey which was much easier to digest.
  8. Hey y’all it’s been a minute since I’ve posted or asked question…lately I’ve been experiencing a lot of diarrhea but t no t sure how f it’s dumping or something else…I will say I did eat something’s I prolly shouldn’t lent have based on m timeline given b my doctor…I’m in 15 weeks post op and was told not to eat port or beef until. Was 6months out but it had chili from Wendy’s…I’m not sure how dumping feels or what happens but it came right Ning out like water and for a few hours…no real pain or sweating just diarrhea…is that dumping or just I ate something more little tummy didn’t agree with

    May 2023 surgeries

Almost 10 weeks post op GS.. still can not eat or drink, receive TPN though my PICC 16 hrs a day, Now injecting my line with Zofran every 6 hours, so help keep the nausea at bay a lil bit.. Have home health comes in to do blood work and change picc bandages. Was back in hospital for 3 days. My platelet count has been tanking out,, 1 week my count was only 13, it jump back close to normal, and now this week it on decline again. They are still running test to try to figured out what is going in.. Still searching for answers. As the days go by i feel more and more defeated. Surgeon say give it time, it should get better.. Well SHOULD doesn't scream confidence.

    Stairs after surgery

The literature they gave me at the hospital said to "walk, walk, walk" and that "stairs were ok." However, I wasn't allowed to get on the treadmill until my 3rd week out. (Maybe more because of the risk of falling?) Probably best to ask your medical team, and definitely listen to your body. If it were me, I'd stay on the first floor for at least the first week. At least until all of the anesthesia is out of your system, and you're no longer using pain meds which can cause dizziness, grogginess, and improper balance.
  12. I have sleep apnea, arthiritis, fatty liver and high cholesterol and am scared as well but I'm also scared of all of these conditions I have and developing more later in life if I don't take control of my obesity. So I have made the decision to go through with the surgery for reals this time and not cancel like twice before. All I can do now is do everything I can to help this surgery go smoothly. I'm three weeks out and am following a semi liquid diet (even though my doctors office told me it wasn't necessary because I know shrinking my liver and more weight loss before surgery is safer and better) I take all my supplements and more (with Dr approval) I make sure to get my protein in to promote faster healing and I've begun therapy/support groups. I'm going to try to take as little pain medication as possible after surgery because too many opiods and surgery dont mix. It seems like all these "celebrity deaths" (Kanye west mother, Lisa marie presleu) after surgery had opiods as a factor. I currently had been taken tylenol codeine #3 (a mild opiod) three times a day for arthiritis and that stopped today. I'm not taking any chances even with this mild one. When I have pain I will use creams or tens therapy or hell even book a massage but I am doing everything In my power to prevent complications. I've read books and gained a lot of knowledge about the surgery and have asked patients here how they've done it. That's all we can do and then leave the rest up to God/the powers that be.

    Stairs after surgery

Good morning sunshines!! 🌅 My QOTD today is about using stairs right after surgery! I live in a 2 story home with my bedroom upstairs. There are 3 flights of steps and it's a pretty big home. Would it be advisable to climb stairs right after surgery or should I plan to sleep downstairs for a bit? I bought one of those big town crier call bells as a joke (kind of) to call my fiance when I need something 🤣🤣🤣

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hope everyone is well! I have had a slow month so far, only about 2.5lbs but can't blame anyone but myself. Went on vacation and ate everything I saw lol I drank also which I was not doing and this caused major swelling on my ankle, and have not exercised in 3 weeks. However, I'm able to fit some shorts that I purposely bought a smaller size. I am 11lbs from my original goal of 180 so that's a big plus, my second goal is 160 but I may fall somewhere in between 165-170 depending on how I feel. I think after I hit 170 , I will not look so much at the number on the scale but how I feel. Funny that now I can see my stomach roll and dare to complain but it shows me that I'm no longer hiding and afraid to see myself in the mirror.

    Sleeping help

I was walking in the hospital. By the 4 day I didn’t need to take any pain meds. Sure had the odd twinge but walking in lying up & down stairs, wasn’t an issue except from an energy & lethargy perspective. But we all recover differently. If you’re still experiencing pain that is restricting you from performing basic activities, after a week & your pain meds aren’t managing it, contact your team. You’re sleep may be off because you’re not very active & may be napping during the day. (I miss those nana day naps). Also the hormonal flush associated with weight loss could be upsetting your sleep patterns. Yes, check with your team before taking any meds, over the counter or prescribed, just to be sure as @summerseeker suggested.

    Liquids with food

I’m 4 yrs out & I can’t drink & eat at the same time & neither can my friend at 3 yrs out (we were actually chatting about this on the weekend). Neither of us have to wait the full 30 minutes. Like on a good day we only need to wait a couple of minutes before & after if we sip slowly. Sometimes it just depends on what we’re eating or drinking. Like drinking champagne we have to wait longer. I can sip tea with a snack if I leave a couple of minutes between sips & bites. You’ll work out what you’re able to tolerate with trial & error in time too. Even though fluid goes through your tummy quickly it’s not quickly enough not to restrict/reduce how much food you can eat. Getting your protein & nutrients in is most important. You’ll still meet your fluid goals by waiting your 30 minutes. Sip all day. Establish habits & routines to help. I even drink while I’m driving: at every stop light or whilst driving (considering traffic safety of course), Take water with you & drink while you walk don’t wait for after. I drink throughout the night too (whenever I wake or get up to pee). You’ll work out what you’re able to tolerate with trial & error.
  18. speaking of yogurt, this one is my FAVE. it's SuPEr thick and lusciously creamy but u pay for it in calories (200 cals for 3/4 cup serving, and 10% fat!)...but sooo good.. i just buy the plain though, i find flavoured yogurts too sweet.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

@sleevedinthe817 yea I had family in town for 2 weeks and they just left. Idk what it is but I hope this feeling goes away. Do we need more protein like what gives us energy? It’s all still worth it tho I just wish I could skip to the 6 months post op lol.

    Sleeping help

I had that problem during the second week after my surgery. I was just wide awake all night. I developed such bad RLS (restless leg syndrome) that I was already feeling it in my arms. It was horrible. When I talked to the PA at my doc's office he said to start taking extra B12. I told him that maybe it was the Famotidine (Pepcid) I was told to take at bedtime that was causing it. I asked him if I could take it early in the morning and he said whatever worked for me. I also read that melatonin was the best solution for insomnia in bariatric patients. When I started taking 24mg of melatonin at night, taking the Famotidine and extra B12 in the morning, I started sleeping through the night. Of course, it's ALWAYS best to check with your doctor. My personal experience is not medical advice.

    Restriction

I personally never had it past week 4, and what little I had was barely there. Most people notice it after they start solids. I didn't. I had my revision to bypass on the 28th and I'm on week 3 foods and feel no restriction. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.
  25. This is the yogurt I’m in love with. For a while I wasn’t able to eat yogurt without my stomach hurting. This one does just fine!! It’s Coconut Protein Yogurt. 25grams of protein /3 sugars/4 fat grams/8 carbs/170 calories. I put Jumbo blueberries in this and eat this for breakfast
