  1. I am 7 months post-op: I eat pretty slow but I do find myself eating quicker sometimes and remind myself to slow down. I don't get sick from eating too fast but sometimes not chewing enough hits me slightly. Like a lump in my stomach but passes if I take a break for a few minutes then go back to eating. It depends what I am eating as for how long it takes. For example: solid proteins (meats) slow me down because they are "harder to chew" then say pork rinds which kind of dissolve while you are chewing, if that makes sense. I don't know if it is just me but sometimes as I am chewing the food just falls down my throat and I have to swallow before I normally would. It's like the food is done being chewed and escapes. haha hard to explain.

Exercise - Who even am I???

Everything is always different for me. Often I want to eat before playing sports, I'm starving. This goes on for about half an hour and I need to drink a lot of water and eat a protein bar. My workout can last from an hour to two, depending on how much strength I have. Also, in addition to regular training, I like to ride this bike, which consumes a lot of calories, and I want to eat. In such cases, I stop and drink plenty of water, it helps to get home.

    Stalled

Stalls are the worst. Frustrating & demoralising but also a perfectly normal occurrence. You lost a lot of weight in the first two weeks, your body is likely playing catch-up. Maybe check in with your dietician to review your diet & portion sizes. Also ask for recipe ideas. What carbs are you eating? I was allowed rolled oats from purée but apart from the carbs in dairy, legumes & other vegetables I ate no other carbs: no bread, no rice no pasta. But I ate so little of them it wasn’t a lot of carbs at all. If eat your protein first & then vegetables it’s unlikely you’d be able to eat anything else. While some plans do encourage people to reach 1200 calories quickly, 7 weeks seems too quickly. But check with your team.

Looking for a November surgery pal

@old Salt - that’s the same way how I’m feeling. 😧it’s the postop I’m more nervous scared I may make a mistake or something. I’ve been trying to purchase as many soups and protein shakes as possible and also make sure I have the right vitamins. and staying away from drinking with a straw and waiting to eat 30 minutes before & after I drink something. I’m so nervous. I start my liquid diet on the 1st.

    Struggling truck driver post op

I am also a semi driver on the road. I buy groceries from instacart and have them delivered to my truck. I've even had them delivered at a rest area. I keep premier protein in my truck and I have a refrigerator for the rest. I'd buy some Gatorade with protein to keep in the truck doesn't have to be refrigerated neither does the premier protein. Get yourself some canned tuna and canned chicken for protein and that doesn't have to be refrigerated. Also Loves truck stops has a cup of boiled eggs in their deli area.

Looking for a November surgery pal

Yes. 3 protein shakes and a 4 oz protein meal (steak, chicken, etc) plus veggies. And of course the suger-free jello and popsicles, and a lot of water. Finished Day 4 today with no problems except the first day kind of felt dizzy/tired. To me it is very similiar to the many diets that I have experienced before so it is not that big of a deal for me. I also got pretty good in the past with intermittent fasting so I am holding off on my 1st shake until around noon. As with many of us, we are experts in losing weight but terrible at maintaining that loss. I am more concerned about the initial post-op phase diet so focusing on preparing mentally as well as getting my supplies. I am going into this with optimism. I greatly benefited being prepared and looking forward to the positive results last year when I had my Knee replaced. I am taking that same approach to this surgery. Hoping all have a successful journey!

    Getting back on track!!

About 15 carbs, but they're from the veggies which I allow myself to have, and about 227 calories. Also, 12 grams of protein. Sent from my SM-S426DL using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Hi all! Wondering wondering if anyone else has gone through this. I had surgery in September on the 15th I lost 20 lb immediately the first two weeks now I'm on week 7 and have not lost any more weight still just the 20 lb from the first two weeks. I am getting enough protein but am having a hard time not getting in too many carbs with it too I don't like protein shakes and I am lucky enough that nothing I've tried so far has irritated my stomach so I can eat anything. I stay away from greasy and high fatty foods and pop and sugar. But I am still getting around 700 to 1200 calories per day I walk like 30 minutes per day if not more. But I am not losing anything. I am so nervous or should I say worried that because I can eat anything I won't be losing any more weight any ideas from any of you? Anyone else have this long of a stall this soon after surgery ? 9. Sleeve me alone covered a lot. Gave some really Great advice. I just want to add congratulations on your loss!! It sounds like you are keeping it off too in spite of your hunger coming back. I am a year and a half out and struggling a bit with regain so I know that is not an easy task. Also, 113 pounds is a pretty significant loss, if the extra skin is bad (as in causing you medical issues) your insurance may cover some plastic surgery as medically necessary. I’m not certain because you have to meet certain criteria based on your insurance but if you didn’t know it’s possible it could be covered in some instances. If you are interested in that option you may want to ask your team if you would qualify. From what I understand for some insurance you have to document it rubbing and rashes and stuff but with others it just has to hang down a certain amount to qualify as medically necessary.

Unhappy with bariatric surgery 1 year later

First of all, I'm so sorry you are struggling. Know that you are not alone and that many folks experience some wonderful things after WLS as well as some more difficult things. That is just part of the process; its definitely not always sunshine and roses. 1- Constipation is VERY common. Are you taking an iron supplement? They are notorious for exacerbating constipation. If you're taking any additional iron, it may be worth getting your labs checked - if they are normal, maybe you can drop that? Another option would be to add a prebiotic fiber supplement. I take about 15g of Just Better Fiber daily and it is a HUGE help. Make sure you are well hydrated, especially when taking laxatives, stool softeners, etc. Lastly, are you getting in any fiber in your food? This goes with #2.... 2- The return of hunger is normal and expected. Your body is doing EXACTLY what its supposed to do. It may be helpful to start introducing more fruits & veggies, which will help you feel fuller longer and help with constipation. Also, are you hitting your protein goals? If not, definitely focus on getting that protein in. If you're hitting your goals, adding in nutrient rich fruits & veggies, and STILL feeling uncontrollably hungry, then it may be time to consult with a bariatric dietitian. Hunger is normal, feeling miserable is not. 3- I think a LOT of us struggle with body image before and after surgery. There is a trade off that happens - we lose the weight and are healthy, but it can make the physical effects of a lifetime obesity more obvious to us. Therapy therapy therapy. I can't encourage it strongly enough. Learning to cope with those feelings, learning to be kind to our new bodies, learning to love ourselves well, THAT is the hard work of weight loss and it is truly a lifelong process. Get help, and keep getting help. Outside of that - buy clothes that make you feel good, as much as you can focus on what you LIKE about your body instead of what you don't, if its practical for you, you can always look into plastic surgery, and of course, you could just refrain from looking in the mirror naked. I know, easier said than done, but if its causing your harm emotionally, then maybe hold off for now. You aren't alone and you aren't crazy. WLS is hard work and there is a lot that comes with it that doesn't get talked about much. We are rooting for you.

Oh wow. Most of us get all our vitamins as well as protein checked.
  12. Okay so i mentioned the cauliflower pizza bowl by lean cuisine and I had to try it. Just came out of the microwave and it sure smells good. It’s 430 calories which is a bit much for a lunch for me. I am in maintenance and like to keep my lunch around 300 calories or less. This Has 22g protein, BUT 30g fat so definitely not an all the time option for my plan (18g carbs). I will have a lighter dinner to offset some. I have to admit it’s a little greasier than I expected. I guess pizza is too though so duh, lol. It tastes pretty yummy, I’m just hoping it doesn’t upset my stomach since I’m not used to all this grease. I have been eating between typing this and honestly I think I am satisfied with about half of it. Not because it’s a huge portion but because it’s so rich with the grease. (At a year and a half out, I usually can eat almost one serving of most things) if I can get two servings out of it I guess it’s not too horrible. I think I will keep one in the freezer for when I’m really craving pizza or when my husband decides he wants a pizza on game day which thankfully isn’t too often. I am thinking I also may try at some point to make my own version of this with Turkey pepperoni and see if it’s any good??

I think they meant the protein shakes. I can currently drink the clear protein water and the nurse from the Kaiser support group and my doctor said it was fine and counted. I think you should start attending some of the sessions and/or join their Facebook support group and ask your questions there. Your local Kaiser bariatrics should have that info.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hi everyone/ I need everyone’s tips regarding beating exhaustion. I’m at my wits end. I cried earlier… I am taking in about 70-90g of protein. Not making 64 oz of water yet but getting there- probably average 50 or so which doc said was fine. I’m taking the vitamins. And this week has just been brutal. I’m 5 weeks post surgery and I just can barely keep my eyes open even though I’m sleeping 7-8 hrs a night. I have my next appointment next week but I am just literally on the verge of exhaustion and don’t know what to do in the meantime. Pls tell me this is normal and I’m not the only one.
  15. With stage three are you counting clear protein drinks as fluids, for fluid intake? I was told protein supliments don't count as fluid anymore and I am finding that getting my fluids in is super hard without my isopure made with water and the clear drinks. Scared but excited.

    Fruit

You will fill up on your protein. After that, I eat most anything. I am still losing, but slowly.
  17. Hello, I was eating homemade "pizza bowls" at soft foods. Basically melted cheese, turkey pepperoni and a little sauce. Barely a bowl, more like 3 bites but still eating it. I had even taken those "cheese wraps" and warmed them up with a few turkey pepperoni on top and then rolled them up like a pizza roll and ate them. Now, 7 months post-op I kinda eat pizza. haha I usually make my own with super thin crust and can eat a piece or 2 depending on the size and the day. But even if we eat ordered pizza I usually take a few bites with crust and then just eat the toppings. I am not a carbaphobe. I eat carbs, but some fill me up way faster than others like pizza crust. So I only have a few bites to make sure I can get the protein in.

    Constantly in pain

Your other option is to go to your local hospital or emergency clinic. If you experience excess pain that can’t be managed or pain that is usual for you always seek medical help. Better cause they can physically see you & run tests. Pain this far out is not usual. Most find after 4 or 5 days there’s no pain just some discomfort (like latent gas pain, stretched muscles & similar) easily managed with over the counter meds if needed. All the best.

    Surgery in 5days

Just had my revision on 10/14 with hernia repair. I felt the same way and it's been great. I think because I knew what to expect. Also, they have so many food options available compared to when I had my first GNY in 2007. Sent from my SM-S906U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Starting my ESG journey!

I did not feel hungry at all the first few days. It was a struggle just to get enough liquids and protein shakes. I started feeling what I thought was hunger in week 2, because in the past I always interpreted tummy rumbling as a hunger signal. But thankfully, I learned it was actually just digestive / gas bubbles in my new tiny stomach which still had swelling at that time. (I mean, I tried to eat something but threw up. I was just misreading that feeling as a hunger signal.) My team put me on a PPI to control stomach acid, which worked wonders to get rid of that feeling. I also sucked on some lemon sugar-free lozenges for mild sore throat after the procedure, which helped as well. They stopped all my meds, including for pre-diabetes, so I did not get low blood sugar. Maybe ask your team about it if hypoglycemia is a concern? Overall, I had a really easy recovery. I was back at work day 3 after my procedure. No pain whatsoever except occasional gas. The only thing I had difficulty with was the no caffeine rule during the first two weeks. Best of luck to you on Monday!!

I have kaiser too and have questions about my diet. I just started stage 3 where it says that protein supplements no longer count as fluid needs. I called kaiser and was only able to leave a message. Can you help with my question? Does the clear protein drinks count as fluid or the isopure that I make with water count as fluid? I'm afraid I'm not going to make the protein AND fluid intake minimums at this stage. I'm worried now. The only "food" I had today was 1/2 a yogurt. Scared but excited.

    Fruit

Bypass here, I eat fruit most days. I pair (pear ha, ha) it with a protein to prevent dumping, usually for only one meal a day (dumping worries). I like that fruit has vitamins, fiber, and water to make me feel very satiated.

    Fruit

I eat fruit every day - mainly berries but also occasional apples and pears and melon. I don't have any problem processing them (I have been so lucky when I see what some people here have gone through). Loads of veg too including carby veg like root veg. Portions are small and I separate the fruit out from my main protein meals but I like to eat it every day, and I think I always will.
  24. I will have surgery 2 days before Thanksgiving, so if I'm lucky I get to have a pumkin spice protein shake [emoji39] I have seen a lot of people do refried beans, chicken salad, baked ricotta and mashes for the pureed stage, you can search pinterest for some ideas Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Fruit

I have only just had enough room in my tummy for fruit. I struggle with skins so peel everything. So, grapes are off my menu, no time to peel a grape. I eat 4 or 5 small meals a day and to up my calories and give me more energy, I drink a homemade milkshake every day. I still like banana and peanut butter in my milk. Breakfast is a protein yogurt with raspberries, or porridge and banana. My fav small snack is a sliced peeled apple with an ounce of cheese. I have always eaten loads of healthy fruit. I tend to buy what they label kids fruit, small apples or small snack packs of cut fruits. A normal pack means lots get wasted. No food is off my menu if I can stomach it. Will I ever eat rice, noodles or pasta again? I don't know this. I don't want to be on a diet anymore. I just want to keep my restriction to limit me.
