I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

I'm 57, had the vgs in June 2017, I'm revising to the bypass soon because of hiatel hernia and acid reflux. I literally have the acid back up into my windpipe and close off my ability to breath. I have to keep a rescue albuteral inhaler just to get breathing again. It's very scary. Sent from my N9560 using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. Wow...I logged back in to this platform as my journey continued and forgot this thread was here. I can’t believe I’ve been in this band nightmare for over 12 years!!! In 2007 I finally got the port removed. My doctor very nonchalantly said “it tested positive for MRSA infection”. I had NO idea the implications. He handed me a card for an Infectious Disease doctor and told me to go across the street to their office. Again, NO idea what was ahead. Suddenly I had a nightmare of a PICC line (took 2 excruciating days to insert) for Vancomycin and a wound vac system. I had both of these for weeks, my home was a virtual hospital. I even took that show to work a few times. Crazy. That was over 10 years ago. In those 10 years I had just the band. I’d never been able to get it removed because it wasn’t presenting obvious negative effects and my insurance wouldn’t cover it. After a decade I finally started the path to revision to a sleeve. I had the band removed on 10/26. It was very complicated. My outpatient procedure turned into 6 days in the hospital. The band had eroded into my stomach (common) but also had RAVAGED my small intestines. The new surgeon said he had never seen anything like it. He had to get the band out of several spots in the intestines and do a lot of repair work. While recovering, about 24 hrs after surgery, things went south. BP low, breathing shallow, heart rate up, fever...ugh. Many tests later and we determined that my chronic Diverticulitis had flared up and was causing the additional pain and infection. It was a very long 6 days, and the fevers kept coming. After being released and on a better coarse of oral antibiotics, things are finally better. It’s been 3 weeks and I am almost not in pain. It was a miracle I didn’t have a blockage, or major infections with that band. I now think my bowel perforations and infections may be related to the band. I had no idea and I guess the band was never visible in the CT scans. Anyway... I wanted to finish my 12 year saga. I’m almost second guessing the sleeve surgery. I feel like I am 4/4 with bad surgery issues...but the reality is that a lot of things (if not all) were caused by that awful band. I may have the surgery, but it will be after the New Year. That bums me out because it will very VERY expensive with out of pocket costs...but realistically I need more time to heal...and I am unable to miss a wedding on Dec 29th. Not sure anyone will read this...but that’s where I am. Xx

    gastroparesis and possible band removal

Me, too. However, I was afraid of the bypass surgery and years ago it was kind of complicated to get the revision (and no guarantee you'd get it at all!!). Nowadays there are quite a few hospitals in Germany that perform revisions because of reflux without the patient having to get permission from insurance first!

    gastroparesis and possible band removal

Yep, band to mini-gastric bypass here. My band sprung a leak after the first fill and sadly never worked for me. Wish I'd revised years ago. Mind you it worked brilliantly for Bandedwendy on Youtube. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Just an update: still having intermittent severe abdominal pain in spite of 5 months of compounded Prilosec twice a day, max Pepcid, and Carafate. My surgeon said I should have healed after two months so I got another scope today (my 3rd since May). My ulcer has healed on the inside. He said I may have an ulcer on the outside of the cuff which would need a revision=big darn deal. I could have an abscess touching the liver which has a lot of pain receptors. Or I could have a stricture (scarring) which would be an easy fix. I am hoping for easy. He said to switch to Dexilant and continue Pepcid and just see how I do.
  8. A lot of us are in a similar situation. It seems that bands are causing damage that was not predicted when they became so popular and that they should not be left in place indefinitely. I am scheduled to have mine removed and revise to RNY in Jan

    Lap band removed!

Congrats! I had mine removed and revised to the sleeve October 10th.

    Lap band removed!

Congrats on your LB removal! I know when I had mine removed, I felt much better physically. I chose not to get revision right away and did pretty well for about 5 years. Then life threw me some curve balls and I gained my weight back. I spent 2 years trying to do it on my own before I realized that I needed help. I got revision to sleeve on 4/10 and am very happy with my decision.

    Lap band removed!

Congrats! I'm also pleased I had mine removed. I was revised to the bypass and I honestly could not be happier with my decision!

    Vsg to rny

Yes, that is exactly how I feel. I had the VSG in December 2014. A month or so after I had horrible GERD and my “full sensor” was way off within about 6 months. I only lost about 45 pounds total in the last 4 years and decided to get the revision. I got the bypass a few weeks ago and immediately there was no sign of Gerd. I’m praying my weight loss is much better.

    October Bypass

October 30th Sleeve to Bypass revision surgery. The sleeve caused me to have major Gerd. It’s all gone now. I only lost about 45 pounds with the sleeve so I am nervous that I won’t lose the weight I want to lose with the bypass and this is really my last chance.

Looking for other Anthem Blue Cross PPO experiences.

So when I had my band placed in 2009 I had to prove what diets I had already been on, a psychological evaluation and all the physical stuff. Then In 2016 when I had my gastric bypass done I just had the doctor handle things. They wanted to make sure it was medically necessary for the revision. They paid all but 20 percent or up to my out of pocket max which I believe is $2800. Hope this helped!

  19. Hey there fellow bariatric pals. I am looking for advice or anyone with similar experience. I have GS March 2014 with top weight of 250 at 5'6" BMI 41. I lost about 55 lbs which my lowest weight has never exceeded about 185. (Goal weight about 165) So, at this time, I have gained back some weight and am at 200 lbs. So about 15 lbs back again. My doctor recommended perhaps having the Duodenal Switch/Revision to continue to take more weight off. But, I really only need to lose about 30-35 lbs. I am afraid that I will get under 160 lbs and be too thin. Has anyone had the DS after the sleeve? Still researching and trying to make the best decision. Thanks to all for your time to read and comment. NY1966

    Anyone with leaks?

I had a revision from lapband to bypass last December and 3 weeks later had a leak. I was hospitalized for 49 days, on TPN, and horribly sick. Now, almost a year later, I’m finally starting to feel back to normal. I’m 3 pounds from my weight goal. Its been a really rough year. However, I really can’t say I regret it because I’m so happy with the results! Leaks are very rare, so yes it’s a possibility, but still very unlikely. Don’t worry, and I wish you the best of luck!
  21. This is a pretty subjective area, *most* don't see any real losses in that area until much later down the road, belly fat seems to be the last to go for most people. I've still got a decent amount even after over 100 lbs since revision and 160 lbs lost since I started...

    Struggling!

That's tough man... Sadly there really isn't a way to make the hunger pains go away, typically I'd say just pound the water, but you said you were having issues with water. Personally, I'm so glad I had the band removed and revised to the bypass, I'd never go back or ever advise anyone to get the band. I hope the refill works for you.

Anyone get bypass surgery for gerd?

I had terrible Gerd, then I got the lap band. All of the gerd went away (Or so I thought). I woke up in the morning spending the first couple hours clearing my throat. The surgeon told me it was probably "silent GERD". Right after my revision surgery from the band to the RNY, the throat clearing was fixed. I have a family member who was thinking about having bariatric surgery. They have GERD really bad, and the surgeon also recommended the RNY. He said that the sleeve is a high pressure setup which has a tendency to push up stomach acid. This is coming from a surgeon who does mostly sleeves, so I wouldn't say he was biased against sleeves in general.

    Water

Just seems to go straight through me and I'm a month out after revision to mini gastric bypass. I suspect my hole between my stoma and my intestine is large because I don't have any problems drinking just like I used to. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
