Wow, your plate is full enough without all of these complications. You are tough, tho, and you will get all this behind you, soon. Best of luck!
  2. I agree. When they told me I needed to lose weight I was like... okayyyyy I'm here because I CAN'T Lose weight but ur tellin me I have to lose before I can qualify for surgery. Her answer was they only do it for our own safety. The lower bmi the safer an less complicated surgery. It makes sense I guess. Jus hope I can lose all the weight to get my bmi to were they would like it to be. :/

    Introducing Myself

Hi Abe, Welcome and congrats on making the decision to change your life. If you really read into this site, most people do not have those complications, just a few. You could get those same issues with the lap band I believe. I myself , had no complications other than feeling nauseaus coming out of surgery ( common I guess) I believe if you go into this with a clear, positive mind set, you will be just fine. I would do it all over again 10 times to be where I am today. I will be 5 months out on July 9th and am down 72 lbs, 57 since surgery and cant remember the last time I felt this good. Good luck on your decision, keep us posted!

    Excited from Everett, WA

Yes, I will go on the liver shrinking diet for two weeks prior to surgery and my doctor says that will get rid of the excess fat on the liver so surgery will be more successful and less complications will occur.... it's similar to a diet I did 5 years ago and was highly successful with... it won't be so hard and I am excited to get on with it.... he doesn't want me to do it longer than 2 weeks though... but I am trying to adapt with other habits that I will need to have for life so it is not such a shock to the body or psyche. Kammi in Everett, WA
  5. I was banded in December of 2005. I had many boughts of vomitting. Finally in August, 2007, I could not even keep liquids down, I had my band deflated and it was discovered that my band had slipped. I decided on removal because of the risk of future complications and the fact that I will no longer be insured for bariatric coverage. I am about ten days into my "post-band" life and it is nice to eat and keep the food down.
  6. Hello Yellowroseaz, In my case I am 252 with my shoes off and have a BMI of 40. I have already done all the diets and pills. I even went to a psychiatrist to see if I had depression and he put me on a medication that was known to help people lose weight with no luck. For the last 7 months I have been working out with a trainer 3 times a week for an hour and been doing JC since Nov and only lost 1 lb so even though I do not have any medical complications I think my PC P finally realized that it was time. Now if I can just get my insurance, PacifiCare to see that. I think if you can show to your PCP that you have tried everything else he/she might see the light. Have you gone to an informational session? I am going to go to one next month to see if there is anything else I need to do to prepare. I also suggest reading the post listed here. I have been doing that for a couple of days and getting some great information. Good luck and keep in touch I would love to hear how things go for you.
  7. Hi. I'm Lori, I'm 23 years old, and I live in Goddard, KS. I was banded on January 18th and had lost 13 pounds in the first 5 days. I weighed in at my pre-op at 327, and the day of surgery at 331. As of 2/12/2008, I have lost 31 pounds. I was banded by Dr. Niazy Selim of the Weight Loss Surgical Center in Overland Park, KS. He, by the way, was the kindest, most gentle man I've ever met. I had a wonderful experience at WTLSC, and they treated me like family. If I had to go through it again I would feel completely comfortable with the team up there... they were wonderful! I did experience some dry heaving coming out of anesthesia, but haven't had any problems with throwing up post-surgery. I go in for my first fill on Feb 20th. I have had one, and only one complication since the surgery. I'm still experiencing tightness and pain in my chest, dead center in between my breasts. It becomes rather sharp as I breathe in deeply. It comes and it goes. I'll be fine for a while and all of a sudden I can't catch my breath because it hurts pretty badly. It's really frustrating. Anyway, I was told it was probably gas - but I've taken gas-x pills, gas-x strips, and taken tums. I even had a prednisone cocktail to try to counteract possible swelling. It's still not really getting much better. Anyone have any suggestions? Sincerely, Lori 331/300 (Day of Surgery/Current) 120 more to go. Goal: 180 pounds

    At last straw

Hello my fellow Georgian! Welcome to LBT! This is a great site to do your research. You will find lots of info here. Make sure you go in the complications forum and you will see some of the bad there. Everyone is different though, some have a harder time than others. In whatever you decide, I wish you the best! Where in Georgia are you from?
  9. Hi Frankie, The internet has its good and bad side. I obsessed over the doom and gloom stuff too before surgery..but then realized that there will ALWAYS be that 1% who are either negative or who have other complications that skew their perspective. Franc is right…where will you be one year from now if you don't do this? Turn off the youtube, quit searching for train wrecks on the internet and trust the facts.
  10. What if any complications have you experienced? Thank you for answering..I have just joined this site. Thinking of having the surgery. ann
  11. I was told I needed to remove all metal jewelry before my surgery so I replaced my tragus piercing with a plastic one. I think the piercing got irritated and I developed a really red bump next to it. You think this could have any effect on my surgery?

    Newbie will be banded (9/8/2006

Welcome!! Stay out of the complications section as it is a nerve wrecking emotional ride for the prebander. The support section and the general questions and information has put my mind to ease. Even the chat room has been a great help!! This board is a godsend!! Everyone is VERY helpful and informative!! You have come to a great support. THere are even local face to face supports. Check by state in the lower half of the posting section. Anything you want to know use the tool bar search option you can always "bump" (post on it) a thread to bring it current to get more information. PM me if you need help or have other questions!!

    Hey Hey Hey

Welcome Big Buck, I know what you mean about saying anything about the location, doesn't anything make me any more upset than people that do that. I have worked in the nursing field too and I had mine done in Monterrey Mexico, first time I was ever in Mexico in my life and self pay and I can say from my heart that my hospital was much better than the ones I have worked in and I was treated much much better in Mexico than ever in the States. I had a very complicated neck surgery over a year ago, and didn't have health insurance at the time and it was from a car wreck that wasn't my fault, and Ky. is a no fault State and after this complicated surgery I went to have stitches out and was scheduled for a visit 2 weeks later and they called me at home and said, unless you have the 29,000.00 to pay on your next visit we won't see you, so, after this major surgery, I never seen my surgeon again and had to see my pcp for this. I could never say enough good things about Dr. Sanchez and Mexico, it was a wonderful experience and I think unless someone has had they're surgery there and seen it firsthand they should not comment on this subject, it is a very sticky subject. Good luck on your journey, and kudos for Mexico.

I have a date! A date with destiny!

Thanks guys for the congrats. I'm still really nervous. To answer your question connie, I don't actually have any particular pre-op diet, He wants me to try and loose 5kgs though. I know it's a long journey, but I'm ready for it I think. I know it's going to be a tough journey as well. I must admit I'm not looking forward to the 2 weeks clear fluids stage. But it's going to be worth it. Reading the book made me scared though. It was talking about complications with the surgery and my heart started to speed up... making me get some ectopics... *rolls eyes* I have venticular ectopics on a regular basis, like for instance, right now as I'm typing this. But anyway, I'm looking forward to not having this blasted back pain anymore, that's for sure. I have really bad lower back problems, and most of them are related to the weight I think. Anyway... :girl_hug:! I'm excited! Stephie
  15. Less risk of complications with the sleeve, similar amount of weightloss, less restriction on kinds of foods you can eat long-term, less risk of malnutrition during pregnancy and old age.

    sharon p

Hey lessofme and Sharon P--hope you are both doing well with your surgery and your decisions. I'm having Dr. Hansen do my surgery on March 19. Right now I'm feeling a little apprehensive about it all--will it work? can I eat following the rules for the rest of my life? (I'm sure those two questions are related!). What if I have complications? Spending money out of pocket for the surgery is one thing, but thinking of doubling or tripling that amount because of complications is very scary. Lessofme, have you survived the long period of liquids and pureed/strained foods without too much problem? Have you lost weight yet? You'll have your fill the day I have my surgery! I'm so full of emotions: excited, nervous, anxious, hopeful... But, what else is new??? Good luck to you both! Karen (in Provo)
  17. Hope you're feeling better. Why did he remove your gallbladder, did you know he was planning on removing it. What was the indication that your gallbladder needed to be removed? Your surgery time was very late, what type of complications were the others having?

I am new and a little scared...

Keep in mind that the people who get banded and are doing fine don't tend to post here...but the ones who are experiencing complications or problems are posting. So what you see here is a skewed picture of the experience. There is s a 'sticky' at the top of the General Lapband Discussion forum called something like "Share your Scar Stages" and it's full of pictures. We were all nervous before surgery...and for a few days after when we were dealing with the pain. But we're all here to talk about it and happily getting on with the business of losing weight! :Banane43:
  19. Although I have prepared for the surgery: watched the films, went to meetings, had all my test completed, etc. I am still a little scared. I guess going under the knife is just scary. And when I read of some of the complications in the forums, it just makes me wonder if I am making the right decision. Does anyone have a photo of the scars? Is the entrance to the band to have a refill visible? Just need a little pep talk and encouragement. :nervous
  20. Hi. I had my surgery in Charlotte on Nov. 11. I believe Dr. Voellinger is part of the same group as my surgeon. It's called Carolina's Weight Loss Surgery. Dr. Roc Bauman did my bypass at CMC Northeast. Where does your doctor do his surgery? If I'm correct he either does his at CMC University or downtown at Mercy Hospital. The pre-op experience was very complete and and staff was wonderful. I've heard that all the surgeons in this group are excellent. My surgery went well, with no complications. I've saw Dr. Bauman at 1 week and 4 weeks post op. I saw the nutritionist at 2 weeks out. I will meet with the nutritionist once a month for a full year. I'll see Dr. Bauman at 3,6,9 and 12 months. As far as my success, so far so good....... I've lost 34lbs so far. I feel really good with the exception of some constipation. I'm now adding new foods everyday or so, and am tolerating them well. I'd love to hear from you. Good luck.

I am new and a little scared...

Hi- just to let you know, I have been out going on 2 years with absolutely no complications. Just kind of a slower paced loss- the band should have gone around my head! But I am working through the emotional stuff that is the basis for my overeating and the band is definitely doing its job!

Three Weeks Away - New Member

I am thinking now that it is good that it is that early. That way I can get get released sooner and not have an overnight stay (barring any complications). Thanks for the well wishes!

    Virginia newbie

Hi all, I'm from the beaches of Virginia but left my bikini body behind some 30 years ago! My appointment with the surgeon is this Wednesday, so I guess I'll find out then if I can be banded. I sure hope so. Been fighting weight all my life; and now I have diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other lovelies. God blessed me with a loving, supportive husband of 24 years and a wonderful 19 year old son who is currently in college. Life is good and full; in more ways than one! I've been reading for several weeks; learning as much as I can from you fine folks. My surgeon is Anthony Terracino if anyone is familiar with him... Well, other than the fact that I'm retired on disability since 1995 due to complications from a craniotomy (lupus related); that's about all there is to tell about me. I enjoy gardening when I am able, our church family, and we like to travel but haven't been able to this past year because of my loss of mobility. And I have a ton of great friends! They really keep me going. Looking forward to sharing more with you soon. Hugs, Susie
  24. Hi there I had my surgery at Barix in Ypsilanti, MI (my fills will be done at their Holland, MI office, which is much closer for me) My Dr. is Dr. Shramm, and I am really happy with him and the whole Barix setup. Surgeries are also done in the town where I live, but the doctor doing them has only 1 year experience, and Dr Shramm was my friend's doctor 4 years ago. Also, bariatric/LB surgery is ALL they do at Barix (Ypsi is just outside Detroit) so I felt that any potential complication would be in good hands. My insurance requires an overnight stay, and I was glad they did (although I didn't get much rest with the respiratory therapist and nurses coming in every 2 hours!) I was on full liquids for 3 weeks after, then blended foods for 2 weeks, then go to "soft foods" (what you could chew without teeth :eyebrows: ) then regular food. I am supposed to not lift anything over 5 lbs for 3 - 4 weeks, stay out of the pool for 6 weeks, and walk 30 min a day or more from day 1 (I did my first "walk" at Kohls the day after surgery - probably not the best idea) I did go back to work on day 8 - I'm a massage therapist and saw just 1 client - and have had no pain, but did feel very tired for the first 2 weeks. I really had to look down and see the "ruffles" on my tummy (surgistrips, starting to come off) to remember I had something so major done. I'd love to hear your experience with fills, choices of food, and weight loss. I am down about 18 lbs 3 weeks after surgery, and back working pretty much full time (4 or so clients a day, up to 3 days a week) Also, if you had surgistrips, and they have come off - HOW do you get the adhesive off!?? :help:
