Nov 16 surgery date, bored of protein shakes
kcuster83 replied to SageIce's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought canned soup and strained them, only drinking the broth. This really opened up the flavor window, they all taste different. Rather than plain boring broth. You can always add unflavored protein powder to it too. I didn't so I wouldn't know how to do it. Other people ate what was left of the soup so it didn't go to waste. I was allowed yogurt, no chunks. You could add that if it is in your plan. Greek yogurt is high protein. They have gatorade zero with protein now, (considered clear protein drinks). I tried a few different ones, gatorade was my favorite. You could also try thinning out the protein shakes to change the consistency. Or get powder and make different mixtures. For example, I used sugar free lemonade and mixed strawberry protein for a strawberry lemonade protein shake. BUT I would also add more like 10-12 OZ of lemonade to thin it out and it was more like a drink rather than a thick shake. I have heard of people getting crafty, like vanilla powder and rootbeer flavored water for a rootbeer float. Or orange flavor with vanilla protein for a creamsicle. You get the point. haha I haven't tried any of this except my strawberry lemonade one, so I don't have an opinion on how they taste. Just a few suggestions, you got this! -
full liquid diet Nov 16 surgery date, bored of protein shakes
SageIce posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let me start this off by saying I've never been a fan of milk and I don't like shakes (not even milkshakes from Culver's). I just don't like the chalky aftertaste and thick texture of the protein shakes. I'm not hungry, just bored (If that makes sense). So here's what I'm doing and I would love for you all to help me. Please tell me what I can add to make it to the 16th. -Chicken broth with protein powder mixed served warm and eaten with a spoon. -A clear Jell-O -1-2 premier protein shake (chocolate or vanilla) -64 oz or more of water -Also just added Gatorade GZero last night (completely helped me with my muscle spasms) Anything fun you all doing or did to help add variety to the full liquid phase? -

MFP: you can change the information. You can put in as much carbs or whatever. I have a max sodium and carbs. Just know that your macros (carbs, protein and fat) are at a percentage. Scared but excited. -
Looking for a November surgery pal
AgentCherryZero replied to Needtogethealthy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had bypass surgery on the 1st. I'm feeling pretty human today and will try to sleep without the pain meds tonight. I had a drain port and that was taken out today. After that was removed, I've felt much much better. I'm not having a problem with liquids but proteins just don't agree with me at all. I'm hoping since I can move to milk based drinks tomorrow that will change. -
1 week post of and severe diarrhea
Mrsblacksun replied to switchwitch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It did after two and a half weeks. It was hell but as soon as it went away I got stronger everyday. I also couldn't handle protein shakes and dairy for a couple months. I believe at month 3 I was able to do dairy again and small increments. And now I'm just able to enjoy protein shakes again which is a huge help because I wasn't able to get my protein post surgery for the longest time. I still can't have a ton of them but I can handle them again. Are you having any other symptoms?? Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using BariatricPal mobile app -
November 2022 surgery support!
NP_WIP replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Officially starting preop diet tomorrow, even though I get to have a meal still freaking out. Waiting for my clearance letter to be provided to the surgeon but according to Doc all is good, but until he has it in his hand I do not trust that. I booked my flight since I do not see much changing and its really cheap so I do not mind if anything does. I'm getting anxious and a little stressed to be honest, too much going on outside of this and I feel in the middle of a tornado, but I trust everything is going to go the way that is supposed to. Will book hotel but can't decide if I want the option to be refundable or not, it's on Thanksgiving week so I'm thinking prices may or may not increase. -
First Bowel Movement… dark brown?

It was darker than usual though. Maybe that’s why I was surprised? This morning, I did drink my fairlife chocolate protein shake. Maybe that’s why? -
When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?
Leo segovia replied to raspberrylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started day two after surgery. I did not suffer very much pain 2 days in total. Off the Oxi on day two. Started my chews, vitamin d liquid, cal- mag liquid, biotin, compleat Colligen, added also 2 amino acid complex plus lansoprazole EC( medication) and senokot laxative, only if I have difficult movements. And 204 g of protein ( whey isolate dorsal brand) . It seem like alot but is goes easily because of being chews and liquid form. I divide them some in morning best 9n empty stomach and others with food( soups) and some at the end of day. I have not had any issues with aches or stomach problems. Just entering week seven. Still prefer mostly soft foods and I will transition to more solid when I am confident with it. Hope this info helps someone out there. Cheers from Toronto Canada . -

1-week post op; feeling all over the place
You Are My Sunshine replied to KRod6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It definitely helps make my liquid goals when I can count my protein drinks in. Otherwise I'd fail daily. -
You might want to track what you're consuming, just to make sure you're hitting all of your protein and hydration goals. Not getting enough will make you feel bad and will also stall your weight loss. Are you taking your vitamins? You might want to have your labs (to include ferritin level) checked. I took vitamins, religiously, before surgery. I'm sure that half the reason why I'm dragging right now is because they had me hold them. I get to start taking them on Tuesday and I'm so looking forward to it! I'm anemic and can't wait to start getting some iron, again. I'm looking forward to getting back to exercise. Pre-surg, I enjoyed running on an elliptical and I also liked doing some of the workouts that Beachbody offers. I'm really looking forward to seeing some results from exercise. Before surgery, I never saw anything change. Now, I should and it's exciting!

I ate a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese today and ooooof did I feel that. I was full the rest of the day and almost had a hard time getting my water and protein in. I'm glad my pouch is working as intended. I won't do that again. 😂

I am a 2x revision patient, starting with LapBand in 2011, followed by VSG in 2019 due to severe Lapband complications, and finally GBP in 2021 after even more complications with the VSG. I have been fighting the good fight for ELEVEN YEARS now, and trust me when I say I was so ready to give up many times during the process, but I am so glad that I never did! I am officially down 152 lbs, and have been maintaining within 3-4 lbs since Feb 2022. I am to the point that I am ready to start looking into plastics. After so many years of fighting to get to where I am, I love the way I look and feel.... when I'm fully dressed. But seeing all the loose skin is a hard mental hit every single time. All the work, tears, pain, determination.... it all feels like it's for nothing when I see the destruction it all left behind. After a lot of research on various options, I am heavily leaning towards the Beltline procedure due to the amount of work that will need to be done. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would love to hear all about it! Pros, cons, horror stories, success stories... I want it all!

I would just say make sure you increase your calories to around 1200, switch up your exercises once in a while, watch the sugars because they can definitely slow weight loss, keep protein between 70-90g per day, watch the fats (and try to have the majority you consume as healthy fats), reduce caffeine if possible, avoid carbonation, definitely keep fluids up. And after all that, just give it time, have patience, and really pay attention to your NSVs (Non Scale Victories). Those are keeping me sane right now during my VERY long and annoying stall.

I’m 3 days post up and my doctor put me on a Protein only (soft, mushy, and/or finely chopped) diet. I was able to tolerate water and chicken broth okay at the hospital. I had a little nausea but did not vomit. In fact, the PA called me yesterday and asked me to try tuna with Mayo to see how my stomach tolerates it. If it does not tolerate it then she asked me to try something else. Every doctor is different. The booklet and docs they provided us with is just general information but your doctor post op will tell you what diet they would like for you to follow.

I have never been able to eat much at one sitting so I have 4 or 5 small meals a day. Breakfast -100gms of protein yogurt and a large latte Lunch - 25gms cheese, 25 grams deli meat and a satsuma or cucumber and tomato or 1 slice of super seeded bread with ham and soft cheese A homemade milk shake Supper - 50 gms meat, 2 tbsp veg and gravy. Or 150 gms chicken curry with a tiny salad or 100 gms fish with a sauce and a tbsp of veg. I am still unable to eat pasta and rice and have never liked potato products, Supper 2 - I will eat any leftover food from my earlier supper plate then have a low cal ice lolly. I am a lolly addict. I openly admit it. If I have room and need more protein, I will have a protein pudding or 25 gms of cheese and a piece of fruit I record about 60 - 80 grams of protein a day and 900 - 1200 calories a day. At the end of this month, I am 1 year out. I am trying to up my protein and calories because when I have a busy day, I get very tired. I am one of the lucky ones, I have little appetite

@james2021 thanks so much for reaching out and way to go on your achievement!! You've lost more than 1/3 of your starting weight. Starting again is always more challenging than staying the course, but being conscious and honest about it is crucial. I've been hovering in the same weight range for a couple months now as well and am at the stage where even a single pound lost is worth celebrating. I struggle with getting enough protein (especially in the morning), avoiding carbs, and moving my body, which are old habits that got me to nearly 300 pounds. Sound familiar? I have a surgery on my right foot two days before Thanksgiving, so I'll be non-weight bearing for a couple months... and unable to drive. I'll be spending my winter/holidays healing and a big part will be to eat healthfully. Let's do this together! Let me know what you're doing toward your health and wellbeing. Won't it be great to spend next Spring and Summer feeling strong and amazing? Let's do this!

Travel food suggestions?
ShoppGirl replied to SpartanMaker's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
For the road trip maybe consider investing in one of those coolers that plugs into the car or wall. You will have more room because you don’t need ice and you won’t have to deal with it. Just be sure to shut it off overnight because it can drain your car battery (been there). Or better yet you can take it into the room and plug in there. They aren’t super cheap but they are handy to have on hand for future road trips if you do them often. Also consider shipping things like protein shakes and bars ahead to your destinations in places you will not have access to them. You can ship directly to most places from Amazon or Walmart, etc and have them waiting for you when you arrive. -
Travel food suggestions?

For your road trips, can I suggest nuts, jerky or biltong, deli meats, satsumas, children's pack lunch food like crackers and cream cheese dippers. Instant porridge pots if you can get hot water. Peperami mini sticks, Babybel cheese and Milk. Are you allowed to take a small cooler bag on the plane? You could then take little tubs of foods like egg salad or less smelly chicken salad. Guacamole or hummus and protein chips. Fruit salad. I researched the food on the aeroplane and found they had a delivery mix up and I couldn't find anything to eat that tasted good to me. I ate some Pringles and a fruit salad. A latte coffee is always a good choice because it has lots of protein in the milk, a good carry-on item. Nut and seeds are easy packets to pack If you take some flavoured protein powder its always ready for any emergency when the shops are closed, and you can then add it to milk or plain yogurt. Have a wonderful time -
Nothing i stocked up on was eaten by me all protein substitute, i could drink them started Whole Foods early to get down the protein via the surgeon and nutritionist. I had to give a lot away

Hey folks, I have 3 different trips coming up and would love your suggestions for food while traveling? I'm about 6 weeks out and have no food restrictions, though I obviously can't eat all that much yet. I'm mostly focused on protein, with some good carbs and fats mixed in where I can. One trip is by car ~ 9 hours each way, 5 days total. This one has me worried about what to eat on the drive days other than stuff like yogurt and protein drinks? I can probably stop and pick up food if needed, but this is through mostly rural areas and options are pretty limited. The other days I'll be in a hotel room with a kitchenette and will have good access to grocery stores and restaurants. I expect I'll be able to eat more normally on those days. The next trip is an overnighter by plane. I may live mostly on protein bars for this one unless anyone has any good suggestions? Unfortunately, no kitchenette this time, so I'm mostly stuck with what I can bring on the plane, what I can find ready-to-eat at grocery or convenience stores, or eating out. The final one is 4 days, again by plane. Different city than trip 2, but should have good access to stores & restaurants. Again, no kitchenette, so no cooking.

Every surgeon has a different post-op diet. Luckily, my current surgeon's diet philosophy is similar to my own. My post-op was and still is a balanced diet with tons of fruits and veggies. After 8 weeks, the basics of my diet is to get my adequate protein, 7 to 13 servings of fruit/veggies a day, 20 to 50g good fat, and good carbohydrates (about 50% of my calories are from carbs).

If you are burning 1600 calories, you should be consuming around 1200. If you work out that hard and eat as little as you are, your body thinks it's starving and it holds on to everything. You still want to consume less than you burn off, but you have to consume enough so your body knows it's not starving and will let the weight come off. For protein, try to stay in the 70-90g per day range. What do your fats, sugar, and carbs look like? Are you drinking anything carbonated? That can stretch the pouch, as well. How often are you eating and what kinds of snacks are you having?
