I've developed hunger that's coming across as nausea. It happens about an hour after I drink a protein shake. If I eat a little cottage cheese, the nausea goes away. My body is definitely wanting food, now.

Christmas dinner purée club (December surgery!!)
Leo segovia replied to A.little.lessofme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I make soups. Roast veggies in oven with avocado oil and tiny pinch salt. Carrots mushrooms broccoli cauliflower tomato Most times I need two trays. I try different protein. Easiest is a roasted chicken from supermarket. And while is is cooled down I devine and saute meat with onions and more avacado oil. Add roasted veggies ( two pots sometimes) add salt free broth( Campbell's ) and water. Low salt Soyasauce, Hossein sauce , Worcester sauce. Simmer for 20 min. Let cool and use emersion blender and grind up. It if too thick add some more liquid. I track all my ingredients by weight and using my fitness tracker add to my recipes. It will tell you calories and vitamins and protein values. To add portion size in tracker I weight total puree soup and divide by 250( it equals a cup or portion. ). Then you can track can calories per amount y you eat. Healthier and you control salt and fat intake and will know calorie count. ( Most of my soups have 70-90 calories per serving. Sometimes it is a bit thick still I'll add water to thin out and make a bigger portion. 250X2 . Works with super soft well cooked roasted beef or stew. Avoid potatoes, ( starch turns to suger) good luck hope this inspires you . -
As far as whether its too early or not, that's up to your program, as they vary widely on such things. At this point, protein is king, and then whatever else that goes along with it. Corn tortillas aren't a high density nutrition food, either for protein or anything else, but they aren't particularly bad, either. I used them during the loss phase mostly as a faux pizza crust - crisp up a thin corn tortilla and add mean, cheese and token veg, seasoned appropriately, and some pizza or pasta sauce - and that fit my needs of protein vs. calories for a meal. I always strived to maintain at least an homage to a normal healthy balanced human diet within the confines of our protein requirements and minimal intake, and that would be a part of that.

Weight gain going into week three
MyDogsLoveMe replied to nymisc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too am frustrated. I started at 229 the day of my surgery (10.11.22) and have only lost 12 lbs. I see people have lost 20 lbs or more. Now I'm worried I won't lose anymore weight and I'm doing all of this for nothing. I am taking in my protein and liquids and don't have a lot of room for actual food. I have a yogurt, and ricotta bake I'm going slow because it took me almost 2 hours to eat one yogurt. I started walking more what else should I be doing? My surgical followup is later this week so I'll see what my surgeon says. Scared but excited. -
My surgery was 10/4, im still having trouble getting enought protein but have found these shots that have between 15 and 36 grams of protein and are only between 2 and 4 ounces each. Much easier to choke down than 10-16oz to get the same amount of protein. I have eaten some foods a few days before I got the official orders to switch to purees but that was a huge mistake. I threw up for over 24 hours after that. I tried a soft meatball for dinner then mushed up salmon and cauliflower the next day for lunch and after that I couldn't keep anything down, I was honestly afraid I messed something with the surgery up, so much so it's been almost a week and I still have been hesitant to eat even pureed fruit I've been sticking with my protein shots depending on which either 2 or 3 times a day then the rest of the day work on trying to get enough fluids to not be dehydrated. You definitely got lucky your pouch wasn't irritated or damaged, as was I, ive read some horror stories of people eating too soon and it causing a leak in their stomach pouch which can and did almost killed them in a very short time so im paranoid now and sticking to protein shots and zero Gatorade for as long as I can stand it. I read somewhere it really takes like 12 weeks for the stomach pouch to fully heal even tho the drs progress the diet doesn't mean it's fully healed so just be careful.

No. I'm sticking to what my surgeon says. If I wanted to continue to do what I wanted I wouldn't have had the surgery. But, you do you. It's your body and your healing. That said, I did Protein before the surgery to find out which ones I could tolerate. The atkins ones were the best even though it has less Protein, I add protein powder to bring up the grams of protein per serving. I tried isopure and clear protein which I could also tolerate. I could not do the ones added to soup. Scared but excited. -

FYI - the fruity pebble protein powder is absolutely fantastic to me makes me feel like i had naughty cereal for breakfast instead of being on my liquid diet this week!! one more day of liquids to go before Thursday surgery!! Wednesday night I have a special bottle of pre surgery Ensure to drink along with two tylenol to prepare. Then Thursday morning I have to take an anti nausea med on the way to the hospital….. so nervous! -
You are definitely not alone. That's why I caution others not to do what I did. I just put away in a box, a zillion different protein powders, unflavored and flavored, Bariatric soup and chili packets ... Etc. I think after the first 2 weeks, I found more delicious, natural and appetizing ways to get my protein in. But here is the weird part, I still buy them from time to time if someone mentions one that I think I will like. After one serving or two servings, back in the box.

Went to Vegas for a few days, feeling lazy to get back into cooking and meal prep so eating "quick" things for the past 2 days. I hope I can snap out of it and keep learning to cook lol. For breakfast, I just had 36g of Catalina Crunch Cereal in Chocolate Banana flavor (110 cal, 6g fat, 14g carbs, 11g protein) with 1 cup of cashew milk (25 cal). It is one of my favorite quick ways to get some protein in. I ate it all. Wish I had bananas to put in it. -

Oh wow! I don't even eat steak yet and I was cleared to eat whatever I wanted 2 weeks ago! Everyone has already talked about why you shouldn't have it yet, so I won't go in to that. I wanted to tell you that while I LOVED protein shakes before surgery, they were just fine for my pre-op prep. I HATED them after, it wasn't even the taste, my stomach started reacting poorly. Fortunately, I have access to Fairlife milk and Fairlife is easy on your tummy because its lactose free AND it has higher protein per serving than regular milk, its a great protein shake replacement if you are still in a mostly liquids stage and need to get your protein in! I was drinking three 8-10 oz glasses of Fairlife Lowfat milk a day, until just recently because I can now have protein bars and other solid forms of protein. The shakes or the milk are SUPER important to make sure your body gets enough protein until you are cleared for solid foods. When I was in the pureed stage my go-tos were refried beans with a little cheese and taco sauce on them (still eat that now!), cottage cheese, low fat/low sugar greek yogurt, Protein 2 O (its a protein water!), and Fairlife milk. Good job on your progress, take care of your new little tummy! -

I don't think I would have risked that. You might want to try adding the flavorless Iso-Pure to your soups and yogurts. You can get your protein and skip the shakes -
Well, obviously I'm in the minority here, and that's fine. I do feel like corn tortillas may be getting a bad rap? While they certainly aren't the most nutritious food in the world, they are a whole grain complex carbohydrate that contains fiber, as well as several vitamins and minerals. They are typically low in calories (roughly 50 per tortilla), low in fat and are especially high in zinc. Compared to plain flour tortillas, corn tortillas are definitely the better choice. Note that some of the most protein rich dinners I'm eating right now are tacos and enchiladas, so I don't see a problem with them at all as long as you eat them with protein. I also don't get the safety concern. They are made from ground hominy (typically finely ground), and are pretty homogeneous. They are also easy to chew. Also, unlike wheat flour products, they don't tend to "gum up" in the guts. Maybe I'm missing something there, but these should be fine? For the record, at 4 weeks, my plan said to: "focus on low-fat solid foods". A corn tortilla is certainly a low-fat solid food. I was also supposed to eat "protein first, then vegetables and fruit, and limit grains and starchy foods". No foods were specifically off limits at 4 weeks or later. Tortillas definitely fall into the "grains and starchy foods" part, but I probably only eat a few tortillas a week. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as "limiting them". As far as I'm concerned, it's all about balance and these work for me.

8.5 POST OP FROM GASTRIC BYPASS!!!!! ~ Diary ~
This is just for myself although feel free to read if you're interested in the journey - I haven't logged into this forum in a while. I've been super busy in a good way. I'm still losing weight albeit very slowly which I'm not unhappy with. I've dropped about 7 lbs since last updating this.
I am able to eat pretty normally again and rarely do I get the foamies. I'm soooo close to reaching an overweight BMI category which has been my goal for a while. .5 points away! My new goal is to reach a BMI of 28. I think I'll sit comfortably at 28 given my large frame and height. To achieve this, I will consume protein shakes once a day with at least 30 grams. I'll get the rest through my food, limit consumption of simple carbs and fatty foods. I will drink 64 ox of water a day and go on a 2 mile fast walk 3-4 times a week, one workout video at home 1 time a week, and 1 jog once a week, probably on the weekend afternoons. I will also improve my sleep hygiene, get a more comfortable mattress and make my bed every day.
I really want to be conscious of my calories without overwhelming myself or triggering maladaptive eating behavior. I feel what works for me is counting calories of foods that aren't really part of my eating plan. For me, no foods are off limits but I need to be mindful of the foods that don't necessarily put my closer to my goals while still enjoying them. Paying attention to their servings sizes, my portions and logging the nutrients and calories will be a good middle ground to log my food.
I also feel that overloading myself with work will make this harder so I need to be mindful about how many things I say yes to. Keeping a very clean home and workspace will help me a lot and cutting out unnecessary distractions and drama.
I have a lot of hope for myself. I think this small goal forward is really good for me. If I think about it logically - it'll work. Right now I have my goals in food, water, movement, work, and home. I think I'm ready! : )

That sounds great! Lots of yummy flavors. My program has us using 3 shakes a day even in the puree phase. 6 weeks/soft food I can bring it down to 2/day. 6 months/solid food I can go down to 1 shake but that continues for a year. Then it's whatever we feel like. So for right now I can only do 2 meals a day that are real food (supposed to have 5 meals/day). I know I'm gonna be sick of protein shakes by the end of it all. lol I had my breakfast protein shake today and will be eating my first puree at lunch time! Wooo hooo!

I am guessing you are too early out to eat them safely which is the most important thing but they also are not the most nutritious option. That early out your focus should be on protein and if you have room maybe a veggie or two. If you eat a corn tortilla you probably wouldn’t have much room for anything else. Maybe not even the toppings, lol. You will eventually be able to have corn tortillas again in moderation but for now I am thinking they are not your best option.
-
I eat corn tortillas now that I'm in maintenance, but early out, no. I agree with what others have said. Plus, corn tortillas don't have much in the way of nutrition, and now is the time to really focus on highly nutritious foods since your stomach can't hold all that much. You need protein, vitamins, minerals - tortillas just don't have much of those.

Food after sleeve surgery

Others had very good ideas for alternatives to shakes for protein but if you feel you just can’t do it your better off to talk to your team about progressing to the next step (purées) a bit sooner than skipping ahead as far as steak. At this point it’s not just like you’re cheating on a diet and may gain a little weight. Not to be an Alarmist but You can seriously hurt yourself with just that little bit of steak. Thankfully it sounds like you’re okay this time but that doesn’t mean it will go so well if you did it again. If you tell your team you are tolerating the liquids and all that well and your struggling with the shakes they may give you the okay to advance to the next stage a little sooner. Just try to remember this won’t last forever. And congrats on your loss so far. -
There are plenty of other choices for protein other than protein shakes that won't rip your sutures or injure your staple line. Lots of pureed foods and soft foods like cottage cheese, beans, ricotta cheese, greek yogurt, hummus and more that are high protein. Steak after 10 days post-op is simply dangerous. A piece of steak won't make up for 10 days of having no protein at all. It is about safety. Give your stomach 6 to 8 weeks to heal. I hope your doctor explained all this to you.

I just made chicken fajitas and bean puree! Grilled a seasoned chicken breast, then pureed with Greek yogurt. Made peppers and onion sauté then pureed, set aside. Layered chicken and pepper/onion puree in baby food Tupperware and topped with cheese when reheating. Made seasoned black beans with added collagen. Pureed with Greek yogurt. Into baby food containers and also topped with cheese at reheat. All the flavors!! So nice to not have to drink my food anymore. The Greek yogurt helps with added protein ad smoothness. -

Try clear whey protein drinks. They are more like flavored water. Protein is important or youll lose too much muscle mass. Going to a general diet so early isn't good as you're still healing. I'm October 17th and just moved to purees. Your doctors orders aren't recommendations they're post operative care instructions to ensure you heal properly. Try pureeing chicken or fish into soups. Beef is one of the last things they recommend you eating as it's fatty and harder to chew down to a good puree.
