Too Tall For a Gastric Bypass?
cristobal replied to cristobal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes, my initial operation procedure was to get the gastric bypass because the surgeon at the time said it was the best for my weight. This was 4 years ago. Unfortunately the way the program was run I was denied because of insurance errors. I jumped off the bandwagon and stopped all steps to clearing the OK for surgery. After my recent injury, I decided to Kickstart the surgery again. This time I went in with the same mentality as before except my Dr was now very thorough in his way of working. He asked me questions and I also did as well as I could think of. But he said that because of my height at 6'3" he would have to stretch the intestine up a little higher than most of his patients, which had a higher risk of leakage after surgery. He said that even though the risk of surgery is almost all the same in most cases, this was one of the things other surgeons have seen in other patients doing the gastric bypass who are tall that had a problem with leakage. He suggests I think about sleeve only because of this minor risk. The risks are always low but lower if I go with this. Unfortunately I can't find much feedback from other people who have had a sleeve surgery. I'm still looking for more answers. I appreciate all responses. Thanks... -
When I had my surgery my doc prescribed me zantac. I don't really take it anymore. But I know someone that had gastric bypass and has to take two pills daily to keep gas at bay. Does anyones else take it on a regular basis? If so do you think it helps with the gas?

Just had my revision yesterday and got the same vibe and comments from my sister..."hope this one works for you - gosh you've had a lot of problems with your band...this is my diet (shows me smoothie)". To that I had to say...gosh I take a sip or two of coffee or my water and I am so full...sure hope this lasts. Needless to say she has a significant weight problem as well but has never been supportive of my struggles or successes with the band over the years. What it comes down to is some people are not empathetic...and most people, especially those with weight issues are probably jealous that you have a tool to help you. Glad to hear your doing great!

I am sure you will do well. There are quite a few band/sleeve revision people on this forum and they seem to do fine. -
Surgery yesterday...weigh more today
da50bear replied to LM337's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had bypass surgery on jan 19. I lost 18 lbs on my 2 week preop diet. I came home from surgery the next day. I was super bloated and had gained 18 lbs..took 3 days to lose it..walking and even burping helps w the gas -
Thanks Molly. I had the band in 2010 and can't say it worked in any great way. We could never reach a fill point between nothing going down then being sick and anything being able to go down. I'll be glad to get it out to be honest. I was offered the sleeve at the time but I thought it was too extreme! Now I realise I need all the help I can get to keep it off, the losing bit is the easy bit. I started Lighter Life at 19 stone and got down to 10 stone 4. Once I'd finished the 'diet', despite every week trying something to keep it off; the 5/2 diet, counting calories, going back on Lighter Life, nothing worked and I've put 6 stone back on. I'm very hopeful that with the bypass, this issue may not dominate the next 40 years as it has the last 40 :-) Lainey x

4 weeks Post-op- does it get better
DENISEMIC replied to Oompaloompa's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
HI I HAD GASTRIC BYPASS 12/24/14. SO TODAY IS MY 2 WEEK MARK. I TOO LIKE YOU HAVE NOT LOST MUCH. I WAS 286 WHEN I STARTED MY 1 WEEK PRE OP FAST. I WAS 279 SURGERY DAY AND WAS 269 THIS PAST MON. THAT 10 LB LOSE IS GREAT BUT I REALLY DID EXPECT MORE BECAUSE OF THE VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF food I WAS GETTING. I WAS ALSO EXHAUSTED ALL THE TIME. I WOKE UP EXHAUSTED. MY HUSBAND KEEPS SAYING THE SAME THING YOU SAID MAGGIE. HE KEEPS REMINDING ME MY BODY HAS GONE THROUGH A MAJOR CHANGE AND REST WILL HELP ME HEAL. THE FOOD IS NOT BOTHERING MUCH BUT THIS LACK OF ENERGY WAS STARTING TO REALLY GET ME. IT'S KIND OF SOOTHING TO KNOW OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME REACTION AND BOUNCED BACK, EVEN IF IT TOOK 2 MONTHS. MY SURGEON DID SAY SOMETIMES HE ASK HE'S PATIENTS NOT TO GET ON THE scale OFTEN BECAUSE FOR SOME IT TAKES THE BODY TIME TO ADJUST AND YOU MIGHT EVEN GAIN WEIGHT. CAN YOU IMAGINE? I JUST WANTED TO WEIGH IN ON THIS & LET YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I KNOW IN THE DAYS TO COME IT'S GOING TO GET MUCH BETTER. -
Hi Everyone! My name is Kim and I'm new here. I was looking to talk to people who have had lap band surgery that are in a similar to me in their goal. I am 5'5" tall and weigh 295lbs. I live in Southern California and have a referral for the weight loss surgery process. My medical group requires 6 months of classes (2x per month) prior to the surgery. Did anyone else have to do this? If so, was it beneficial? I have one child (almost 2 yrs old) and was really hoping to have more children. When I was pregnant I ate really well and lost 50 lbs (while pregnant) and since he was born, I have gained all of it back and another 25 lbs. One of my biggest concerns is not being to have children after the proceedure. Anyone have information on having children after the proceedure? I am terrified to have gastric bypass and feel more comfortable with the lap band proceedure but I have to do something. I really just don't want to have complications and possibly die from either proceedure, I have a child to live for. I am sure I will be posting more

Tori, it's as others have said - start with a referral from your PCM, and the rest falls directly into place. Just be sure your referral is to a Tricare-approved surgeon/clinic that is authorized to perform the surgery. I also live in Washington, and I have Tricare Prime. I just went through all this. I was referred to two different Tricare-approved places first, only to learn they don't/can't do the surgery. On the third go-round, I was finally referred to the right place, and everything was smooth sailing after that. If you're close to Ft. Lewis, they can do the surgery for you right at Madigan. They have surgeons on staff, and a very active bariatric program there. There are many others in your same shoes, so nobody will be judging you. In addition to lap band, they also do both RNY bypass AND the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, if either of those is a better option for you. I believe Madigan is the only place in Washington where you can get a sleeve surgery that Tricare will pay for. (I initially wanted to have that surgery, but found I could only get it at Madigan, which wouldn't work out for me. Banding was my second surgery choice.) If Madigan isn't an option for you, Swedish Hospital in Seattle is the next closest, I believe. (There may be others.) That's where I had my band surgery. Awesome program, excellent surgeons, great staff. They combine many appointments on the same day, which shortens the time from initial intake appointment to surgery approval. In my case it was about three weeks till I was approved by Tricare for surgery. Good luck with your journey! Dave

sablebby No my bypass wasn't out patient.I stayed 2 days.No complications.Only had to take pain meds 2 times at home. The gas pains are the most painful, but walking a lot gets rid of them.My Dr wouldn't let you go home until you drank enough liquids and Protein. That is why I stayed 2 days.My starting weight for this was 240.I have lost 22 lbs so far.

Are you guys real people and patients?
MissMinnie replied to CCinINdiana's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am also a "real" person and have never been paid anything or been asked to post comments about Dr Aceves. After LOTS of research I chose Dr Aceves to do my band to sleeve revision due to the large amount of revisions he has done. Also was scared to go to Mexico so it was a requirement to stay in a hospital in case there was some problem. Was pleasantly surprised at how little pain I had after surgery. Had no gas pains which was great since they were really bad after my lap band. Self paid for both surgeries but I had the lap band done in Florida. Good Luck. -

Yes I'm a real person and yes I am/was a patient of Dr. Aceves. The reason I felt it was a good choice and safe was that a few of my long time lap band friends had gone to Dr. Aceves to have the revision done. I trusted their stories and recommendations. It did take me awhile to finally take that step (as it is a scary one) and do it. Now I'm 9 months out down 90 Lbs and feeling amazing. Only about 25 to goal and working my way into size 6 - when I started a size 24W. I even used to wear a *tight* size 28W at my highest weight ever. Life's Good!!! -

Hi, I am Angela I am scheduled with Dr. Kelly on 7/13.. I will be flying in San Diego on the 12th and then picked up the next morning for surgery.. I also booked with Sandy so yes my deposit went to Bravo Development..I am having a revision from band... My band was removed in 2008 but the still consider it a revision..I am coming from SC.. I am sure we will cross paths during this... Angela -
I will be going to OCC in Tijuana for my revision surgery, and I am going alone because we just cannot afford for my husband to take the time off. I am getting kind of worried that I will have problems, but I have been there several times alone for band fills, etc. Also, surely this surgery cannot hurt any more than the lapband surgery did.. I mean, it is the same holes, practically, and I wasn't too inconvenienced by the band surgery. Am I naive or missing something?

I've known a couple people who had the gastric bypass. One of them had the gastric TWICE because she gained the weight back. I'm not sure how they were able to do it twice, but she had it twice. Another person I know lost a significant amount of weight - got down to approximately 165 from 280 - but she is now at 198 and struggling to get back. After eating, she seems miserable and vomits a lot. A gastric bypass does not provide restriction, only malabsorption. You can fool yourself into eating a lot of food, but it seems like the more food you eat, the more calories you're still going to take in. The band provides restriction so you get the satiety feeling and won't continue to eat. I like the fact that I will still be able to enjoy foods, but in limited quantities which is how it should be. Sooooo, I decided to get banded so I wouldn't experience the vomiting syndrome and plus, rerouting my intestines is scary to me. Once your insides are changed, it's done and that's it - NO REVERSAL. If something happens to the band, it can always come out!!

For me the decision was easy. My mom had a gastric bypass in 1997 and lost from 265 to 110 pounds. At one point she was 95 pounds. But she pays for it every day. EVERY DAY she is either throwing up or diarrea or even worse, she has a blockage. Her intestines are a mess and she goes to the hosptial once or twice each year with a life threatening blockage. Her hair is almost non-existant and she is always weak and frail. On the other hand, I know two other people who had it done and although they were not sick, like my mom, they have both gained some or all of their weight back. With RNY you just get what you get and then it's up to you, but with LapBand, they can adjust it until it's right for you. And as someone already stated, it's reversable. I sure wish the band was in the US when my mom had her surgery, what a difference it would have made in her life. Here's another thread I noticed with similar content. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f18/starting-process-looking-support-57837/ Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

Hello Straber, I'm happy you are doing well now. It's sad to hear of stories such as yours. More so when the complications occur and the surgery happened to be performed abroad or outside of the US. I understand what you mean about not having a local doctor to help you. I, on the other hand did have my procedure performed in Monterrey, Mexico by a great surgeon. A patient that I met on the day of pre-ops had complications after her surgery, which was performed right after mine. She had breathing problems coming out of anesthesia, she vomitted alot, had horrible gas pains and went home in excruciating pain, weeks later discovered an infection at her port site. Her infection remained for a few months. She phoned our doc. He sent a prescription to her for antibiotics and followed up with her weekly. She finally healed. Recently, she made an appt with a local doc to have her first fill. To her dismay, the doc discovered that her port flipped. They tried an "L" shaped needle to get to the port, but to no avail. After spending $299.00 for an eval with no fill, she contacted the doctor about her flipped port. The doc was more than happy to revise or correct the flipped port at no extra charge. She only had to pay for the flight. Since then she's alive and well and with a fill. She's still losing. She's happy and her problems were addressed by a doctor who cared. So yes I do understand that complications can occur but we have to do our research on our docs before we use them.

I was told by my doctor that when you lots of weight quickly the fat lost releases hormones which can make you emotional and irritable. I know I experienced that when I was losing weight quickly with WLS round one. I recently revised from the band to the sleeve and expect to be experiencing the same again soon.

Theres no guarantee lol especially if bypass but the bypass is working so im trying not to complain too much 🥴 -
So I had gastric bypass surgery on 1/23/17, highest weight was 330, surgery weight was 274, and currently at 224. I've lost 50 lbs and 15 inches. I feel great, have tons of energy, and love going to the gym or outdoors with my 3 kids, but my boyfriend, who is over weight as well (around 315lbs.) Just can't seem to keep up with me anymore. He has lost around 30 lbs on his own since last Christmas, which is fantastic, but lately he has been skidding back into old bad habits. He always has an excuse not to go to the gym, he sneaks sweets late at night, won't go out with us, and just generally sits on his butt all day watching YouTube videos...when not at work. We started this weight loss journey together! He didn't want surgery, but me having osteoarthritis at only 34 years old, I needed it. He is approaching 40 this year and even though he doesn't have serious health problems now, I'm afraid that if he doesn't start to change and get active, he will soon. What attracted us to each other was out sense of adventure and loving the outdoors...now Im lucky if I get him to go on the back porch. I'm so frustrated! Any suggestions on what may be the problem or how to get him motivated once again?

Med Alert Tag - Do You Or Will You Wear One After Surgery?
jewels1223 replied to LosingItForMe2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered mine from Costco online. It's titanium and says....LP SHUNT, GASTRIC BYPASS, PSUEDOTUMOR CEREBRI. My surgeon didn't recommend it but my GP and neurosurgeon did. Cost was about $40. -
Hi Revision buddies! Just a bit of backstory: I had a lapband placed back in fall of 2007, so almost 12 years ago. Unfortunately, I have always struggled with my band when it had fluid in it (vomited frequently, inability to eat most proteins, GERD, could not drink anything that wasn't warm or at minimum room temperature.) My band and I officially "broke up" in 2015. All of the difficulties I had been struggling with had gotten so bad that I had developed acute gastritis, and esophageal spasms due to the GERD and persistent vomiting, which resulted in me having to have all of the fluid removed. While the vomiting every time I ate and esophageal spams stopped, the GERD remained and the last 60 pounds I had managed to keep off after my initial loss, rapidly returned. So here we are in 2019, through an unfortunate incident my husband had earlier in the year, our deductible and out of pocket maximum have been met for the year. The window of opportunity for me to finally end 12 years of GERD and struggle with this band is finally open. I found a surgeon I really am confident in and have had an EGD to check for Barret's and see what kind of shape my stomach was in. I was lucky in that my hernia had not returned and I didn't have any ulcers, but he did notice that even with no fluid in my band, that it seems tight, I'm not really sure what that means, but it would explain why I still struggle with most proteins. At my last appointment, we reviewed my EGD and he was sending the letter to the insurance company. Because my revision would be due to band complications, my insurance doesn't require the 6 months of dieting, psyh visit, etc, just a letter from the surgeon showing medical necessity for the revision. Since I have a history of GERD, we have decided that RnY is the best option. The paperwork was probably sent in sometime after July 3rd, my appointment was late afternoon on the 2nd and I can't imagine that they would be able to get the letter done and submitted the same day. And now I wait. UGH! It's the worst. I don't have any idea how long it should take. I've read the boards and for some people, it's taken as little as a single day for approval. and some waited for weeks only to be denied. It's maddening!! Thanks for the vent! TX2NC

ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
ANewStart4Me replied to New&Improved's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That is how much of the small intestines they bypass. 100-150cm is what my doctor said he normally aims for. 200cm seems extreme. Shorter length Without being a doctor and only watching them on tv haha, I assume you absorb more from what you eat etc. going longer you risk malabsorption but I would also guess you might dump easier. My doctor did 100cm on me, first couple of weeks even this length dumping was crazy on liquid drinks like protein drinks, ensure drinks, up and go’s. Last 4 weeks has been really good until I drank an up n go too fast and instantly dumped it. I go Tuesday to check my vitamins to make sure I am absorbing enough. Here a link from one of the melbourne clinics that explain touch on length a tiny bit. http://www.melbournebariatrics.com.au/laparoscopic-gastric-bypass.html
