    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

I started my pre op yesterday so far so good. The protein shakes are so filling. I am not going to be cooking or attending thanksgiving until after the dinner is finished, I know me and i will be so tempted to just have a bite and I am not risking it. As I get more adjusted to the liquids I will be better suited to be around all the goodies but for now....

    Gym

Okay so another question I had to ask if I loved lifting five pound weights at the gym last year and working my cardio out on the treadmill would that work a little for my weight loss before I get surgery and when should I start if my surgery is in March or April. Thinking of walking more I try to get out of the house twice a day for now and I drink my premier protein drinks is this something to drink after the workout or during it if it's clear protein I have to get to do this so you think it would work I'm working on it so bad I got so much confidence and encouragement from my family and this support group and a very good best friend of mine.Even tho before I got 6,000 steps or more in if I walked all day with water and a small snack of fruit or veggies. I am so determined to get this surgery I write down everything now just wondering should I start going back to the gym because going on the treadmill makes me realize walking and a healthier lifestyle is better for me then what I did before. Gastric bypass

I had recently bought slim fast and I didn't know Amazon has all the stuff I need before my wieghtloss surgery. Slim fast isn't something that helps so I gave them to my sister.on Amazon I found the protein 2 o waters because my adopted sister is going through the same kind of thing only I think hers is the sleeve. I am so excited to be going through this journey because I waited 20 years for something to happen like this. I was once very skinny when I was a kid due to lots of health problems especially diabetes I gained alot of weight always hunger thirsty etc..I'm still training my brain to say no on certain things. It def works so far. I lost around 50 pounds since last year or was it forty pounds and I'm trying my best to loose it the diets working that im on I eat more veggies rather then candy. What are your thoughts on sugar free candy I think there are additives in it I cut those out as well.

    September surgery buddies!!

I agree on the stalls. I know its normal and expected but I still felt like a failure. I wish I could eat chicken more. Its the perfect food to get the protein without the extra fat. Right now I eat mostly ground pork because it has less fat than the beef I used to buy and its even cheaper then beef too. So win win but still not as good as chicken lol. What do you eat for breakfast that has chicken? I have not been liking eggs so breakfast has been my hardest meal for protein unless I eat yogurt. Chili has been my favorite food atm. I bought some Hormel turkey chili and it was pretty yummy and not too bad for me, although seemed high in calories.
  5. You have taken the first step to recognize what you are doing wrong. It is a journey and some days will not be as good as the previous one, concentrate on doing better tomorrow, start your solids and keep your protein and water intake. Workout if there is head hunger or some emotional trigger that makes you want to eat at night and remember why you started this journey, and how far you have come. 6. I dont think our bodies are meant to handle such heavy foods so soon. Cheeseburgers will definitely overwhelm our bodies! I suggest eating it protein style first (lettuce wrapped) before trying it with bread!

    Stuck at 3.5 Months Post-Op

yeah I would move up the appointment with the dietician! I talked to my Kaiser support group leader during my stall & refreshing my memory about what & what not to do helped. She mentioned switching your protein sometimes helps & that's what did it for me!
  8. All of you make me have hope! So I’ve tried powdered shakes and can’t seem to get it right. I am currently not working, because I’m only 2 1/2 weeks post-op, but after I heal I will be going to work and as a school bus driver I don’t always have a fridge so the powders would be nice to keep on hand for making shakes on the go. Currently using the premier pre-made shakes and they have to be ice cold. I currently have organic protein with super food (from Costco) and nectar and both are flavorless. I was thinking I would use these in in juice, but I can not seem to get it right. I seem to keep getting chunks, or super gritty, or the foam will never go away. any and all ideas are wanted and needed thanks in advance, chris
  9. Did you just eat the patty or the roll too? Bread can be very filling & you may have taken a much too large bite resulting in you bringing up what you ate. Think a level teaspoon size bite. Are you eating slowly? Like a couple of minutes between the small bites? A conversation with your dietician may be helpful as it sounds like you’re not making the best food choices (chips, burger). Focus on protein only then a few vegetables if you are able. You may need to keep to softer proteins for a little while longer too - we all heal differently & may struggle with certain foods for a couple of months. Also contact your surgeon just to be sure there’s not another cause.

    Eating carbs

It could be too early for you or you may be like some of us for whom a lot of the more processed carbs like bread, pasta & rice just sit more heavily in our tummy. Plus, they can fill you up very quickly which could set off vomiting. Maybe leave them for now & try again in a month or so. There are some high protein, vegetable-based pastas so maybe try those instead of traditional pasta.
  11. I Love this and agree, I also appreciate the post up above the protein breakdowns in different foods. I do not do protein shakes everyday but that means I am ensuring I am hitting my protein goals. I love Protein yogurts like the Oikos triple zero brand-can add additional protein powders here; I also add unflavored protein or vanilla flavored protein to my oatmeal ( I love oatmeal in colder weather months fiber + protein)-this can get me to close to 40 grams of protein in the morning . You may need to meal prep to ensure you are getting what you need till you can eyeball it and know. Also, Vitamins are KEY.

    January 2023

Jan 10th here. It just got very real. My doctor is allowing a high protein diet 2 weeks before surgery and the liquid diet only 2 days before. Is this normal? I know everyone is a little different.

Able to drink and eat normal 2 weeks Post Op

I was (and still am) the same. I've always been able to eat more and tolerate more than my fellow sleevers, at every point of the journey. I worried like crazy about this (see my early posts...) but now I'm so grateful for the ability to eat "normally". Try as much as you can to trust the process. As long as you meet your protein and water needs, you should be okay. I'd also say less mashed potato and more scrambled eggs or cottage cheese. That will affect your feeling of fullness. I'm now very near my goal weight, just 7 months after surgery. I eat all types of food, nothing is off limits (apart from chocolate - my trigger food) and I eat between 1400 and 1800 calories a day and I'm still losing.

    December 2022 Buddies

If you aren't 100% sure I recommend waiting until you are. You can always revisit the option later. You don't want to regret anything, or not stick with it because you really didn't want to do it. With that being said, it is probably just normal surgery jitters. If you had to go through any kind of pre-op process that usually take 4-6 months. You had plenty of time to think about it and talk yourself out of doing it. This is why I said that you are probably having normal jitters. I can say, I have been reading this forum and 2 others plus in 2 FB groups for WLS. I rarely see people say they regret it, or the only regret is not doing it sooner. The people that I do read about regrets are rare and 100% of the time due to some VERY unlikely/low risk complications. I wish you the best, always make the decision that is best for you and your needs!
  15. I've been stuck at the same weight for 4 weeks now. I'm starting to panic. I'm nowhere near my goal weight. I've been trying to drink all of my water and get my protein in. I've got extra stress for work and school right now. I know that's not helping. Anyone have some advice or similar struggles?

Looking for a November surgery pal

That’s helpful to know! I’m still on liquids two weeks but “full” ones starting Wednesday and can not wait. Even if it’s just thicker protein shakes 😆 I’m also not really hungry but man I want real food so bad.

    September surgery buddies!!

Congrats!!! I think I'm still in my stall. I waited a week to weight myself and I'm down a little bit from my lowest but its so close I'm going to wait and see. Stalls are the worst so I'm so happy for you! I've also found my newest favorite drink. 2 things I hadn't tried, heating my protein shakes and fairlife vanilla so I tried it with a sf chai mix and it is the best! I found on amazon David Rio Sugar Free Orca Spice Chai Tea Mix and it is amazing. I just looked right now and it seems almost sold out which worries me but I still have most of my container left atm. What is everyone's favorite food or drink atm? Do your tastes change often? Mine seems to change weekly lol. I still have trouble with chicken too but so far everything else is ok.

    RNY and Pregnancy

I am currently pregnant after RNY 12 months post op. My on told me to stop taking my bariatric Vitamin due to the excessive amounts of Vitamin A and start taking a prenatal vitamin and a Multivitamin and to make sure I am getting enough Protein, Calcium, iron and Water. Bc of the bypass I am a high risk so they are going to be watching the baby close but they at this point have no concerns. She said the baby will get what it needs from you regardless but it’s super important to take care of yourself especially where calcium is concerned because it’ll take its toll on your bones. Good luck!

    Eating carbs

Like you said, everyone's plan is different. I too am allowed carbs. My team and Dietician stress a VERY balanced diet. Our bodies need everything, within limits. With that being said, It depends on the carb for me. Soft breads also used to hit me like I swallowed a brick, even just one bite. Now, 7 months post op I can eat about a 1/2-3/4 of a piece of bread (REGULAR BREAD- NOT KETO/LOW CARB) at a time without issue. I do fill up very quick on carbs so usually tend to have a bite or 2 and then eat the other stuff. For example I ordered a chicken salad wrap while out one day and ate 2 bites and then just ate the filling. I have had a pasta, rice, breads, crackers, wraps...you get the point. I have tried them all. I seem to handle them all fine now but still I only have a few bites and I'm done with them. Some people do struggle more with them so you could give it a break and try again in a few months to see how you feel. Just focus on the proteins for now. Good luck!

    November 2022 surgery support!

8th day of preop diet, it has become easier. I had my husband's birthday party and I cooked everything without tasting it lol. Only negative thing was having some steak instead of my lean Protein, but otherwise following it to the T. Getting excited! 7 more days until sx date. Eating carbs

It's really individual. I don't exactly recall what I was able to do at 3 months out, but I am pretty certain it was VERY little pasta or rice. I remember having to cook for my MIL after her surgery at around that time and I couldn't eat much of anything with pasta in it. Now I can have a bit more, but only a few bites if I am eating protein with it (which I am, most of the time). If not, I can eat 3/4-1 cup, but that's it. Which is good thing because that's a portion. Bread is more complex. At three months, the only bread I tried eating was a half slice of toast. Non-toasted bread was not happening. Now, I can eat bread, but how much is partly dependent on the qualities of the bread - how fluffy it is, how dense, what else I am eating with it. Also... anything with two slices of bread is usually a no go. I always stick to one slice of bread, or half a roll, or half of whatever. The only real exception to that rule is light English muffins. That portion size works well for me, but I am also 15 months out, so I wouldn't recommend trying that.

    Eating carbs

I've kept carbs to a minimum most of the way along. I've relaxed that a bit in the last 2 months, and can tolerate a little rice and very small amounts of wheat-based carbs like noodles. But bread and I just don't get along well since surgery. It hits my stomach like a brick, and that happens after two bites of a sandwich. So while I'll always love bread in a general sense, it's something I can only have an occasional taste of. This may well change in time, but my stomach remains happiest with just protein and vegetables.

    Syntrax Nectar Experts?

I love the fruity syntrax nectar flavors! Crystal sky, twisted cherry, roadside lemonade, and strawberry kiwi are my favorites. I like that they are just a flat 100 calories per scoop with water. They do foam up a bit after shaking but I usually let them settle for 5-10 minutes before I start drinking. I can't stand the milky protein shakes anymore since post op so I can't suggest those. I want to try the fuzzy navel one but it's always sold out! ☹️
  24. Syntrax Nectar in chocolate truffle is the only one I have tried. I just tried it for the first time last month because of the recent rave reviews. I was surprised but I love it. I put it in my coffee. It is not that sweet and mixes so well. I've been thinking of getting the lemonade one but I don't use a whole lot of protein powder these days so I probably will wait.
  25. I’m wanting to use this with juice. I’m only 2 weeks post-op, and finding premade shakes I like is hard. I was thinking I could mix this is some juice and help to get my protein in? Any suggestions
