I had the bypass surgery yesterday and experienced no issues other than the abdominal pain you experience which honestly feel more Ike hunger pains. My question is how much were others able to drink one day out of surgery? I’ll be lucky to get in 2 bottles of waters today! And am worried about hydration here!

Anyone had surgery Estonia Dr Ilmar Kaur
julieschmulie16 replied to Mizmarycate's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
@RonnieRoo22, Can I ask was it a Gastric Bypass Revision? I am based in Ireland and have been advised that it is not available in Ireland and that only a handful of doctors carry out the procedure in the UK. Can I ask how have you found it since the procedure? Many Thanks, J -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
starladustangel replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 2 years out. I do not regret the decision to have weight loss surgery at all although if I had known I would end up needing a revision due to reflux I would have chosen bypass initially instead of sleeve but I had no way of predicting that. I'm down 172 pounds. From a 54 BMI to a 24 BMI. Russell stover makes delicious sugar free peanut butter cups. There are reese's and quest ones too. I made what I call peanut butter cup oatmeal for breakfast today which is oatmeal, pbfit powder for protein and Walden farms zero calorie chocolate syrup. I've had diet coke a few times but carbonation bothers me so I have to let it go completely flat and it isn't worth it. I don't miss it too much. My PCP wasn't super big on WLS but my insurance didn't require a referral from him and honestly when I went back for a regular visit about a year post OP he was happy to see that it had been successful for me to have surgery. I don't eat red meat often as I don't do as well with it since my galbladder was removed. -

Reflux after weening off of Prilosec?
catwoman7 replied to OnTheWayDown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it might be. I think doctors are more cautious prescribing them now because of the possible side effects. I'm sure they'll extend your prescription awhile longer if you need it, but most of the healing takes place that first month, so that's probably why they only have you on that long. A lot of us are on longer than that, though. Just let them know if you start having issues when you're off them - you may need to be on longer. But then again, you may be fine after the first month. as an aside, if you had sleeve, reflux is not-too-uncommon side effect - about 30% of sleevers have issues with it. Usually it can be treated medically, but a few people end up having to revise to bypass. But that's different than having some minor reflux as you're weaning yourself off PPI's. *Usually* that resolves. -
My surgeon discussed the various bariatric surgeries but I had thoroughly researched them and had decided on the gastric sleeve before my first appointment with my surgeon. I knew 3 family and friends who had had the bypass surgery and all 3 have regained a large portion of their weight loss.I had one friend who was successful with the lapband surgery but another friend who spent nearly two months in the hospital and had to have the band removed. I am 18 months post gastric sleeve surgery and down 145 pounds from my heaviest weight. The difference in my life has been AMAZING. I have gone from a 3X to a size large in clothing, my energy level is up so much that I exercise five times a week for at least 30 minutes but usually one hour and I went back to work part time after 4 years of retirement. I was on 3 medications and was still not able to achieve a earthy BP. My meds have been cut in half and my BP is nearly perfect. Lol, when I went to my PCP the first time after my surgery, I thought he was going to do a jig because he was so excited by the amount of weight that I had lost and how much my BP had dropped. My only regret is that I hadn’t had the surgery sooner.

I am SO disappointed in myself. Self-sabotage post-op
MoominMan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a gastric bypass in August. I've lost 105 pounds – which is not bad, I guess – but the weight loss has stalled, hardly changed at all since January. The fact is I have been eating too much. I don't dump and bad foods have crept in. Today I ate 4 packets of crisps and 5 small chocolate cakes. That's nowhere near the amount I used to eat of course, but its still really bad. My restriction has never been that strict, from quite early on I could eat relatively large portions for a bypasser. I am sabotaging myself and I feel like I have squandered the goldilocks period of the post-op where your body is most receptive to losing weight. I can't express how sad this makes me. I always knew the transition to healthy eating was going to be hard but it is further complicated by a quite debilitating eating dorser. I've been diagnosed with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) which has made everything so much harder. For me its not as simple as trying new foods or changing recipes to healthier options; there are so few (we're talking no more than three) reasonably healthy things I can reliably cook myself and eat. But because I end up having the same thing every day, it's not that healthy. Still more carbs than I should be having. It's 8 months since my operation. Is there time to turn this around? -
Did you choose sleeve vs bypass and then get physician approval? Or does the doctor pretty much decide what is best for you? Does it ever happen that you have one surgery and later wish you would have had the other? And if so, why?
-
I went to my consult asking for the sleeve, but after my doctor recommended the bypass and with more research, I chose the bypass. I had occasional GERD before, and I didn't want to take the chance of it getting worse. There are WAY too many folks on here getting revisions, and my insurance was very clear that this was a one-time thing. I also have diabetes, and you have more of a chance of being cured with the bypass. I was concerned about the bypass being more invasive with a harder recovery, but my doctor told me that on our end, the surgery and the recovery are the same for both the sleeve and the bypass. The only difference is on his end because bypass is a more technically complex surgery that takes about an hour longer. I had my bypass on 3/3, and I'm so glad I went with it.

Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
lorettacv replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a similar experience- I went through 90% of the pre op requirements and stopped because of negative support from some doctors and friends and my own fears. A year and a half later I started again. It took me 13 months because of COVID to complete the pre op and get a surgery date for gastric bypass. It’s been 6 months and I’m down 62 lbs. I’m eating high protein low carb. When traveling I go to McD for egg McMuffin and toss the muffin. I try all fruits, vegetables and meats. I skip things like steak because I don’t like the way the first bite feels in my mouth or stomach. Thankfully meatballs are ok! I even drink wine. Yes, my old lifestyle changed but it’s been worth the improvements in my physical abilities and outlook. Good luck! -
I was supposed to have surgery in June and got a call today about a cancellation so now it’s May 19th!! I attended the final class today and have my pre op doctors appointment on the 13th. I also found out that I get to start my liquid 3 week diet tomorrow-surprise. I thought I’d have more time to prepare but excited to just get it going! I’m having gastric bypass due to severe GERD as well.

The Sleeve vs Bypass?
BypassedSophie replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was in the same predicament as you—need to lose around 70lbs and wanted the sleeve. My GERD is horrendous and causing scar tissue in my esophagus, so surgeon highly recommended bypass. My surgery is Monday, and I am excited to read that people who had bypass, do not have GERD! Thank you! ❤️ -
May Surgeries - check in!
BypassedSophie replied to ChunkyCali's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My bypass surgery is scheduled for this Monday (May 3rd). I am on Day 10 of my pre-op liquid diet. The first 3 days are the hardest—I had body aches, hunger, weakness, and fatigue. Now, I don’t really notice being hungry, and I have more energy than I did last week. I have lost 15 lbs! I bought the bariatric soups from my surgeon’s office, and I find mixing them with flavorless protein powder and broth make them better—I also added a little black pepper and garlic seasoning. My best advice is to keep busy and keep drinking water and sugar-free Gatorade to help! My motivation for getting through these two weeks is constantly reading about what happens when you don’t follow the diet. I don’t want my surgery cancelled or my health at risk, so I drink the soup, the protein shakes, and the sugar-free liquids and count the days until Monday! I am both nervous and excited. Anyone having a bypass? Most of the people I know had the sleeve, but I have severe GERD so my surgeon recommended bypass! -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?

So much this... never realized how much of our vacation time was spent thinking about WHERE we were going to eat, and now that I'm not checking out the food at parties, I can actually talk to people... although I'm an introvert so that might not be a good thing - LOLOLOL!! I had a weird reaction to one of the shots they gave me in the hospital and ended up with another emergency surgery the day after my bypass. I regretted it for about a day, but since then I've had no problems. I even asked my surgical team if they pranked me and really hadn't done anything after all. I can't eat nearly as much and if I do I get a little nauseous, but other than that, I love it. My dietician said that 90% of folks never have any real issues so that's more the norm than it is the exception. It is a bit of trial and error as everyone is different. I haven't found a food yet that I can't have - including red meat - but I also haven't tried any desserts as I'm afraid to start up my old cravings. Sugar is an addiction after all and for me it is very real, but that is MY personal choice. Are there some things that will change in your life - absolutely. It's the nature of the beast. The only time food wise I've had an ounce of regret was I just wanted to gorge on Chinese food like I would have been able to in the past. It wasn't real hunger, it was just a mental thing that I worked through. I ate my little serving and moved on with my life perfectly satisfied. -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?

Don’t regret it at all. I’ve made some decisions to cut certain foods out of my diet but they were danger foods for me & I don’t really miss them. For example I avoid sweets (no cakes, biscuits, desserts) but I had dessert & cake at Christmas. Was never a fast food person so cutting that out was no loss. Used to have takeaway about once a month. Now I’ve only had takeaway food a couple of times in almost two years while with friends (Chinese & gyoza) & again don’t really miss it. How much or how often you eat certain ‘bad’ foods is up to you. Your tummy may restrict you eating some foods depending on your surgery (sweet or fatty foods can cause issues for bypass people) but it is individual. Don’t understand the no red meat advice. I’m a big carnivore & only issue I have is if it is too fatty like pork ribs (pork tenderloin is fine). Can’t do oily fish either but I wasn’t great with fatty/oily foods before surgery either. My GP was very supportive. I’m sorry yours isn’t. What are their reasons for you not having the surgery? What are their reasons for not supporting you to make the changes for a healthier life? -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
Crick replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon wanted to do the sleeve because of where I was (BMI around 40) but she told me up front that an endoscopy was required first to check for reflux and if it showed scarring then I’d have to do a bypass. I did have reflux some before but no scarring. Got the sleeve and I haven’t had reflux at all since. -

I’m sorry to hear you’re having such bad reflux now. I hope all goes well with your revision. Of course I still have to talk to my surgeon but I’m definitely leaning towards bypass. The thought of my reflux getting worse really worries me. And congratulations on your weight loss - it looks like you’re doing great with that part of it. It’s so encouraging to see people’s post-surgery stats. -

I was worried about that too - what if I have the sleeve but have reflux and have to do another surgery. It looks like the bypass has worked well for you though. Congrats on your success! -

I would not get sleeve if you already have reflux. I had no reflux before my sleeve at all but now have such severe GERD I have to revise to bypass. Sleeve was great for me weight loss wise as I lost all my excess weight but the GERD has been awful. -

I was in the same boat and chose bypass. I thought that since it was the original and that other things like the band came and went that maybe the bypass was a better option vs the "newer" sleeve. I have read somewhere that the surgeon can do a reflux test and see how bad it is to help decide. I never researched it so I don't know how accurate that is. However, I wish I would have looked into that and possible had the sleeve instead. Of course had I done the sleeve and ended up with reflux and another surgery I am sure I would be regretting not getting the bypass initially so it's a risk either way. -

Thanks for your response, Catwoman7. I'm leaning towards bypass now just because I'm not sure I'm willing to risk it. I don't experience reflux too often but when I do it's pretty unpleasant and I don't think I want to risk experiencing it more, or worse, than it is now. I'm sure when I have my consultation next week the surgeon will provide more information, but I was just curious about other people's experiences. Thanks so much! -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
catwoman7 replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did bypass because I had reflux prior to surgery, and I wasn't willing to risk it getting worse with the sleeve. it gets worse for about 30% of sleeve patients, so that means it DOESN'T get worse for the other 70%. It's kind of a crap shoot as to whose reflux gets worse and whose doesn't, so it really depends on how willing you are to take that risk. I wasn't willing to take it - but some people are, and some of them have lucked out and it didn't get worse.. -
Hi everyone! I'm new to the forums and so excited to be starting on this journey. I have my consultation scheduled for May 5. I was leaning toward the sleeve for several reasons - less complicated, less expensive (I'm doing self-pay) - but as I've been learning more about different procedures it looks like gastric bypass is the surgery of choice if you have reflux. I experience reflux infrequently, maybe once a week. It's usually pretty mild but occasionally it can be pretty bad and I experience food regurgitation. Just wondering if anyone here had reflux prior to surgery but went ahead with the sleeve and what your post-op experience has been. Thanks so much!

Anyone for October 2020?
Coexister replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been stalled for a couple of months but have kind of fallen off the wagon as far as food choices and know what I need to do. Up my protein and lower my carbs. I do track my food, maintain minimum of 64 ozs of water and continue to at minimum walk 30 minutes daily. My weight goes up and down 3 lbs from 150 to 153 and my goal is 145. I think my excess skin probably weighs a few lbs. I am one of those that can eat anything and not dump. I don't feel much restriction and am jealous of those that do. I had more when I had the sleeve and so I have to be very, very careful. I am happy that I had the revision as it did successfully get rid of the GERD and heartburn. I did lose and am maintaining a lower weight than I had on the sleeve. With the sleeve I stalled and maintained around 170 whereas with the Roux en x bypass I am maintaining around 150 so I am grateful there. I keep thinking, I should go back to the liver diet and try and lose those last pounds that way? That maybe that would kick start my system?
