I get my 60 grams of protein, but a huge part of my diet is carbs. Beans, Pumpernickel, Sourdough, lentils, protein pasta (made of lentils and chickpeas), protein wraps, whole wheat English muffins, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, white potatoes...mashed, baked, etc. (when I do mashed, I do half potatoes, half cauliflower, with fat free buttermilk) And fruits are all carbs, and I eat about four servings a day. Tons of veggies, too. I eat very little meat. One protein shake in my coffee over the course of the day=30g protein. One greek yogurt each day=10g protein. The other 20g I get from low glycemic carb protein (a whole wheat English muffin has 6g of protein), tofu, mushrooms, beans, nuts, seeds, etc. And a couple times a week, I eat some meat, too. I get my 60g of protein every day. Sometimes 80g. Losing 1-2 pounds a week pretty steadily. Loving it:) This week was a bonus week...3 pounds:) (last week I was stuck due to my period, so 3 pounds was welcome) I'm eating 6 little meals a day, am never hungry. The idea that this is forever...is ok with me. I like how this fits in my life.

anyone else still really hungry all the time post sleeve surgery? AND does a bypass take away hunger?
orionburn replied to Catherine Keegan's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You can probably pinpoint a few things that are causing hunger triggers. Try and determine is it certain times of the day, after doing certain things, is it simply from boredom? The wanting to eat as soon as I get home is something I'm still dealing with after a year. I have to make myself do something when I get home. Usually that breaks the cycle and then I'm fine until I actually make dinner. If I plop down in front of the TV when I get home then I know I'll end up eating. I've found I'll make excuses as a reason to eat if I know I have extra food with me at work. "Oh, I have a bit of jitters because I drank too much coffee. Better eat something." Granted that means I have an 80 calorie Greek Yogurt or maybe some chicken salad, but point is that I'm finding a reason to eat rather than actually needing to eat. It's tough. It really is. Food shouldn't control our lives. If you honestly feel that it is don't be embarassed to seek out some counseling to sort through it. -
Hi! Congrats on your surgery and your weight loss so far! My date was 2/6 so I’m just a few days ahead of you. I just got to full liquids on Tuesday. So far I’ve been sticking with low-fat tomato soup and cream of chicken soup along with the Oikos triple zero Greek yogurts, cottage cheese, and cream of wheat. For snacks I’ve got jello, pudding, or popsicles (all sugar free). I’m going to steer clear of any “treat” foods (like ice cream” for as long as possible. The post-op liquid diet is boring and repetitive, but it’s for such a short time. And our stomachs need boring right now to heal properly.

Thanks guys! My doctors cleared me to move to pureed/soft foods as tolerated, so it's getting a bit better. Had some white fish last night and some yogurt this morning and all is good in GI land, plus it really does help to have something in my mouth that's not a clear liquid!! Even with the yogurt, I'm not really chewing, but it's still way better than the liquids! I'm running to the store today to pick up the last of the supplements I need, I got most of it pre-op but I forgot the iron/vit C that I needed, go figure I'd forget at least one thing!

First meal three weeks after gastric bypass.
Cowgirl12 replied to BlueGirl1920's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi! Hard to believe it’s only been 2 weeks today as I have been back to work a week already. But yesterday I started the puréed stage and was afraid to try anything at work other than yogurt. They said to spit out the chunks of fruit (or I could blended it more but not at work. I have 2T of oatmeal with protein powder and my almond milk (I’m allergic to dairy) so tonight is my big night... puréed chicken with a little broth for moisture.... funny... I’ve been “craving” broccoli lol I did have the boxed organic type during the full liquids... so far I have been doing awesome with things except water and sleep lol but I’m hoping with a little more time that will get better. I love brussel sprouts... I hadn’t thought of those!!! Sounds good!! Love hearing how you are doing. -

I had surgery on the 7th too! Can you have jello or yogurt during the liquid phase. I can’t take aspartame so I was introduced to the True Lime packets. I got unflavored gelatin and made lime jello ( I was able to chew the jello) so that helped my brain! The 3 weeks will fly by we approaching the 1 week mark!

Hi guys, I am 15 days post op from the sleeve and I have some worries and questions. I seem to be able to eat much more than I should, I can eat probably 3/4 cup mushy food. I'm eating pureed soups, mashed potatoes, ricotta bake, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and of course my protein shakes. I have never had dumping issues, even when I have eaten 3/4 cup of pureed soup or a full half cup of mashed potatoes. I am eating an average of 600 calories a day. I have lost 3 lbs since the surgery. I feel like this is really low, my starting weight is really high, 379,and I feel like I should be losing more weight. I fear I'll be the person who doesn't lose any weight after the vsg. I'm terrified. Can anyone give me any advice or calm me down about this?

I find most processed diet/bariatic snacks are not good in taste or quality. Many also inflate their vitamin content and my surgeon staff says a lot of vitamins even in good shakes are not absorbed well. I think most WLS patients have some dietary restrictions or surgeon eating plans, while industry guidelines are still loose. My diet did not include any pasta until year one, and it is recommended that it be whole grain and not be the bulk of meal (still focused on protein + veg/fruit). A lot of fruits were not on my diet plan for first 6 months or year because they were higher in sugar -- but many were. I would be very leery of an early diet plan that allowed or did not discuss how to make a good bariatric plate at each critical stage. Grains entered my diet at I think 8 months mostly, I did and do have oats on my high protein yogurt at an early stage or chia seeds. At over 1 1/2 years out and pass my 1st and 2nd goal weight, I still think about my balanced plate when eating and rarely have rice, pasta or bread. But, I do have them on occasion, when I do I try for whole grain versions, brown rice. Frankly, pasta just cannot be on a success plan when your meal is 4oz!

I kind of hated the first month, but it's only a month. I threw a can of beef vegetable soup in the blender and enjoyed that quite a bit--just happy to have something not sweet. I had about half a container of yogurt every day, too. I can't recall when I started with cottage cheese, but I've had it probably five days out of seven ever since--with some fruit, it's my standard lunch. It won't be long--hang in there!

I eat scrambled egg with tofu, refried beans, Greek yogurt, hummus, and cottage cheese in a cycle of sorts. When I’m really bored I integrate cream of soups from the full liquid stage. Only a few more days for me until I progress to “soft” foods. You can do it!!!

Questions about the liquid diet
Apple203 replied to Cats315's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As Little Green pointed out, all of our plans are a little different. I can have dairy, soy, almond, or rice milk with my protein shakes. I can also have nonfat yogurt, lowfat cottage cheese, up to 1/2 cup fruit, and 1 T peanut butter. But not all at once :-) My target parameters: >250 kcal, 20-30g protein, >8g fat, >6g sugar, >15g carb, and >10g sugar alcohols (tho sugar alcohols are discouraged). So my surgeon is shooting for up to 1,000 kcal per day. -
A question for those that are 6 months out and more.
orionburn replied to TexasMommy80's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know these people exist, but for me I can't see having any issues hitting those kind of numbers at 6 months out. My doc wanted us on 3 meals a day and that was it - no snacks. There was no way I could do that. I had to aim for 3-4 meals plus a protein shake to hit my 60g for a day. I probably average 1600 calories a day being a year out. Truth be told I could easily be over 2000 if I wanted to. It's all about what you eat and how often. Yes, my portions have to be smaller, but if I wanted to graze all day long I could and easily rack up the calories. Even with healthy options like cottage cheese or Greek yogurt those are easy to get down. Really it isn't anything you should be overly concerned about IMO. -
Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow, that would be a cake walk! I'm going to suggest the peanut butter smoothie too. But the sad thing is a full serving of yogurt jacks with my blood sugar, and I haven't ruled out if the peanuts butter powder is also making my ears ring. Don't know where that is coming from, only that it's gotten crazy making bad since starting this 9 days ago and there could be so many sources. You know? Why can't it be simple? -
Out With the Old--In With the New!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies. I hate whining and not being an encouragement on here. *sigh* I just sent an email to the RD and will see what she says. @kakatlady612 I truly don't know if I have any switches available. I can't do soy cuz of er/per+ BC--onc's orders. The other vegan proteins are high in phytoestrogens as well. And the egg white protein gave me ringing ears and asthma worse than milk (although I'm not allergic to eggs that I'm aware). I do have some milk sensitivity but am ok with cheese and yogurt in small amounts. -
Out With the Old--In With the New!
Apple203 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Bummer, Fluffy Dr. Weiner suggests an alternative online: 1 c. yogurt, 1 banana, 4T PB2 or natural PB (http://drmatthewweiner.com/a-better-protein-shake/). Maybe you can run that by your dr? I personally like sfh Pure from Whole Foods, but if whey's the problem, its not for you. I've always wondered about the non-whey powders -- now I know I don't need to try them! -
This is one of my staple diet foods now. It's chicken salad so not exactly anything new, but adding in things like almonds (or walnuts) and dried cranberries give it a nice twist. I used to do a half & half mix of Greek Yogurt and light mayo (1 cup of each) but now go with the yogurt alone. Yields about six 1-cup servings. Truth be told most days I can only manage about 3/4 of a cup on it's own, or I do 1/2 a cup and mix in with my small salad. If you want a lower carb version just drop the cranberries and that takes out around 11g of carbs per serving. Edit: Just to clarify I cut the almonds, cranberries, and celery up into really small pieces and mix in with everything else.

Unflavored Protein didn't work out for me , I tried Isopure but could still taste it another version may be better I was instructed to track liquids in a log, by time 1/4 cup portions Max in 30 mins when in full liquids (cream of wheat, yogurt ) Used a timer for everything EVERYTHING KEEP food AND LIQUIDS SEPARATED BY 30 MINS ON EITHER SIDE OF CONSUMPTION I add premier caramel shake to decaf coffee it's the only way I tolerate the shakes Lump in my throat was my almost full indicator, never ate past it if I can help it I start my day with liquids instead of food I do Protein liquids before others to make sure it's done No compression socks Hope that helped -
Travelling the Americas after VSG
penguin83 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, was sleeved 3 weeks ago today, spent time recovering and now continuing my journey through central/South America. Finding it hard to locate good food sources, as Greek yogurt not common, and a lot of meals are based around maize and beans etc. In terms of eating I’m managing 1 scrambled egg for breakfast (takes a good 30mins to get it down) and drinking lots of water, but worried I’m not getting enough protein. Have tried pharmacies for protein and protein bars but all seem to carry a lot higher sugar and carb content than I’ve been used to and am allowed. Anyone else been travelling straight after surgery? Any ideas? Also still have wicked pain and bruising from major incision site - is that normal after 3 weeks? I would have thought it would have eased up by now. Every other site including drain site is healed and fine. Thanks. -
Eating slowly and your full feeling
Sadiebug replied to UKHEIDI's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For the first several months I would read a book while eating to force myself to slow down. I would take a bite, read 2-3 pages, take another bite, read 2-3 pages. That helped me stretch it out. But, yeah, I still ate the really soft foods quickly (yogurt, soup, etc) It's pretty hard to "chew" yogurt for 20 seconds My full feeling was really hard for me to recognize for awhile. It is just a little bit of heaviness in my belly (just below my sternum) and then if I keep going a little past that I will typically burp or my nose starts running a little bit and those clues are my big red stop signs. If I continue on I will hit the painfully full stage and really regret the last few bites. -
If you like to cook your meals, then you might want to check out the website: theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com She has lots of bariatric friendly recipes. She is a former WLS patient. I tried the ricotta bake, pretty much a no carb, high protein meal, it was delicious and quick and easy to make. I think I will try making the BBQ Beef Bites this week, virtually no carbs, packed with protein and easy to make. Snacks: I do almonds, yogurt, cottage cheese with cut up cucumbers, Salted caramel/chocolate Atkins bar (high fiber, very low carb, hardly any sugar, some protein)--very yummy for a snack or treat. Cut up veggies, I like to keep these in the fridge to snack on: baby carrots, red pepper strips, cucumbers. If you want something crunchy and protein packed, but no carb, make some homemade cheese crisps. Just do a search for them, they are so easy. You can eat them plain, or dip them in hummus (yum), or a homemade plain yogurt based spinach dip.

A question for those that are 6 months out and more.
chycky replied to TexasMommy80's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I really don't know my calories any more as I don't track as religiously. I would say around 1200-1400 as due to my workouts, my nutritionist wanted me to add some fruit nut or additional yogurt. Coming off a plastic surgery with no gym and then holidays, I would say I was not on diet the entire time. But, I did not gain. You want to keep tracking as best as possible, I do stick to the same balance at most meals, they are just larger than when first started. Your activity may affect how much you can or should take in. -
Some Recipes for people unable to get protein and would like to try something new....
FluffyChix replied to JazmaniaRNY's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
This sounds great! I make it with flavored sf jello. Cuz you know, better living through chemistry! I also the creamy protein soups made not only with the cream of chicken, but also with cream of mushroom, and creamy poblano soups. Be sure to strain them though! Also with tomato soup it's a killer, too! I've also added unflavored to V-8, season it a little, then warm it. Tastes a little like tomato soup. I also mix some protein powder with sf jello and either cottage cheese and blend it up til smooth, then thin it down, or add Greek yogurt so it's more like a jello salad. Mom used to make that when we were little using either sour cream or cream cheese. It was lovely. You can also use ricotta instead and not have to blend it.
