Hi So my own surgery date has been confirmed as Sunday 18 June with a 2 day stay in hospital. I am having the sleeve done. I have a 10 day high protein, high veg diet to complete from 7 June to 17 and then fasting from 9pm the night before. Have not said it to people that I am doing this bar 2. Anyone any advice about the time off? I am self employed and don't want to take a huge amount of time off. I have kept a few days free but want to keep myself open to working as well. Not nervous about getting the surgery done. Honestly, that wouldn't bother me but a little nervous about going home from the surgery. Should I just expect to lie on the settee for a few days and watch bad movies? The team were not helpful in this regard. They just keep telling me everyone is different and it is hard to know. After the surgery I have a 7 day liquid diet to do followed by a one week of mashed foods like potato or scrambled eggs. Then back to regular food but small portions. I have multi vitamins for 2 years. Nice to find this resource.

I hope this is the right place to post this question! I have Molina Medicaid Apple Health insurance. Two weeks ago I brought up bariatric surgery to my doctor. I even brought a copy of the Molina Medicaid Apple Health pre-surgical assessment form that she is supposed to fill out and fax. She is 100% on board with me having this surgery from what I can tell, so that isn’t the issue. And she seems really nice, I only just started seeing her. On Monday I sent her a message asking if she had sent in the form and asking what happens when they approve/deny it and she responded that she hadn’t yet. After a few misunderstandings of the actual criteria Molina has for surgery, I sent her a message that Molina sent me when I asked them directly. I qualify based just on my BMI according to what they told me. She said that helped and she would send the form the following day. Great! Except now she’s saying she was told by the dietitian at the clinic that it isn’t her who sends the form in, it’s the dietitian. At this clinic, they like to have all of the appointments set up BEFORE sending in that form for approval since stage 2 starts immediately upon approval. I sent her the PDF from Molina that outlines the stages and that it says my PCP has to send it before which she agreed made sense but she doesn’t want to go against what the clinic does. She also said she’s never been through this process before, so I guess I’m her first patient to want this? That isn’t right, is it? The dietitian can’t fax that form, can they? At my appointment two weeks ago my doctor sent in a referral for the dietitian just so I could get on the books since we don’t know how long this process will take and I scheduled an appointment for next month knowing I might have to reschedule. But now my doctor is basically saying the form won’t be sent until I go to that appointment… but why would I go to that appointment if it won’t count? Should I find a new doctor? Or should I trust they know how to do things? Should I call Molina and ask? I’m a nervous person in general and this isn’t helping. 😂 I just don’t want this to get messed up! One of the last things I was required to do before surgery was a blood draw from my GP to test for nicotine etc.. If you have gotten all your medical clearances as well then I can't see it being much longer for them to submit everything to insurance. I was approved in a week's time and surgery 2 weeks after that. I had fun with the psychiatrist. Last time I saw her and she told me I was cleared, I asked,,, "So you're telling me I'm normal and not crazy?" She laughed and said, " You're definitely not crazy. Normal is questionable. " I'm glad she got my sense of humor. LOL

Congrats on your surgery. Are you weighing yourself daily? They pump you up with gas and liquids therefore the scale isn’t really accurate the first week. Good luck on your journey and try to stay off the scale until your first follow up appointment with your dr?

I had my surgery Monday the 15th, I feel fine other than soreness at the incision sites. I have been following the food plan, eating soft, mushy proteins and liquids yet I have only lost 1 pound this week which is sort of discouraging. I have not had a bowel movement since the morning before surgery and that's also making me nervous. Anyone else have these issues?

Congratulations!!!! I just hit and exceeded my goal of 185lbs. As someone who’s been morbidly obese for most of his adult life I never imagined I could ever hit the mythical normal bmi. Guess what, this week my bmi is officially 24.9 NORMAL…woohoo 👍 -
It could be just your fussy sensitive tummy. Many of us experience temporary changes to our taste buds &/or sense of smell. For some certain textures upset them. I was so excited when I was able to eat vegetables again but nope my tummy said no to some of my favourites. But it was only temporary. At best it’s just a ‘this is yucky’ reaction. At worst it may cause you to vomit. And yes certain artificial sweeteners (usually the alcohol ones) can cause digestive distress - bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. I actually had a reverse experience. Before surgery, I often found smoked salmon too rich & strongly flavoured. After surgery I surprisingly could eat it (smear of cream cheese wrapped around a wedge of cucumber - yum). But a few weeks later - nope awful & still avoid it. Give your tummy time to relearn flavours, smells, textures, etc. This is often a great time to try different foods or foods you fed isn’t enjoy in the past. Avoid those foods that upset you fur a couple of weeks & then try again.

Exactly everything @catwoman7 said. There is no right or wrong rate at which to lose your weight just what is right for you & your body. The stats only give you an idea of what you might experience. As with all stats there are always outliers: those who lose more & those who less less. Your rate of loss doesn’t affect whether you’ll lose your weight either. Just may mean it takes a little longer or a little more quickly. By the way 15lbs in 3 weeks is not slow. That’s averaging 5lbs a week. Can’t be unhappy about that. I’d lost about 13lbs at the three week mark & my surgeon & dietician were always happy with my rate. -
Thanks for explaining. I’ll try not to take ibu. Hopefully it gets better in the next 2 weeks. I bought a compression tank and it seems to minimize the pain when walking or getting up.

My surgery is scheduled for June 5th. I started the liquid diet yesterday, today was the second day, and it has been difficult. The hospital is asking for two weeks liquid diet and I started earlier because I want to make sure that by next week when I meet with the team I can ask all questions regarding my blood sugar levels through this diet. I have diabetes and my glucose levels are going all over the place, some high numbers that I did not see before (197 first thing this morning). I think it has to do with the orange juice and Liquid IV drinks that both have huge amount of sugar. I am meeting with the preop team in 3 days and I will ask if indeed it is ok to have diabetics drink those high sugar drinks. I managed to bring the glucose levels lower by drinking broth. The document I received from them asked not to contact the doctor unless the glucose is lower than 70 or higher than 270 so I assume this variation is acceptable in their view. Certainly not ok from my point of view but I am looking forward to get the surgery and reverse the diabetes.

I broke a chair in a bar by sitting on it. Simple as that. The bar owner reassured me that he'd got new chairs given to him by a brewery and they were rubbish because 2 others had collapsed that week but I decided then and there that I needed to get in control of my weight, having been on a diet for about 30 years by then. Never looked back. -

according to this table, I was definitely a slow loser (because I'd lost 28 lbs by the end of month 2, so I probably hadn't reached 25 lbs at the six week mark (I was in the 300-400 lb group)). But I stuck to it and almost never went off my plan, and I ended up in the normal BMI range almost two years later, having lost over 200 lbs. So again, your level is commitment is by far the biggest factor in your ultimate success rate. -

It depends with me, if I am at home I will wait it out. It once lasted 6 hours. Sometimes it passes and other times it doesn't. If it happens when I am out then I will make myself vomit. I can do it quietly, then I can join in the fun again with my family or friends. My worst time was after some mussels that were too greasy. Can not face them again yet. Just this week I was lounging on my holiday sunbed after lunch and I was a little uncomfortable, I burped and projectile vomited a strawberry milkshake, not nice. Obviously too sugary for me. I am still learning what does and doesn't start me off. It would help if it was the same foods every time but one day it's ok for say chicken then not the day after. I am not able to drink when I have it and if it lasts a while then I get very thirsty. I think you will sort it out in a way that's best for you to shift it. Thank you, everyone! I’ve done my upper GI series which went swimmingly. I completed my at-home sleep study and was subsequently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I’ll be fitted for my CPAP mask next week. I completed my first of six nutrition classes, which was quite puzzling because it was like a common sense class - Nothing more advanced than kindergarten-level nutrition facts (choose fruits and veggies, not chips and cookies). I can’t believe I have to wait at least five more months for that. I’m hoping it becomes a lot more specific to bariatric surgery, then it would make sense! I asked the surgeon’s office when they estimate I’d be up for surgery and they think November or December. I requested an earlier first visit with the surgeon, so I’ll be seeing him on 6/6. Very excited to discuss things and ask questions and hopefully get an even better estimated timeframe. I’m impatient, can you tell? Lol! Thanks again folks I really appreciate you all.

My cholesterol was exactly 200 I thought it was bad but the RN told me that because I'm loosing fat my body has to metabolize it so it may show higher the first year or so but not to worry and have it checked again at 1yr. I'm ten days out from VSG with a esophageal hernia repair. I did need to take Tylenol for pain for seven days, and I'm happy to be pain free now. Luckily, I was able to take 50oz of fluid from the beginning - and I am now up to 75+oz. Honestly, I was more worried about that than food restriction, because I have always loved drinking water. All of the sweet protein shakes and waters have put me off sweet tastes and I have been experimenting. I've been adding GenePro unflavored protein powder to everything (there is one with 22 grams of Protein for a small scoop). I'm in the pureed stage with meat now (I know - but my University's lead surgeon allows on his diet plan) and I have enjoyed cream of malanga soup with one very soft scrambled egg and today I made a kind of blended chicken tzatziki soup with cucumber, cottage cheese, chicken and dill, plus a little water. I'm so happy! 4oz had 21gr of protein. I also love spices, but I'm taking it slow. I have a couple of finishing salts with truffle or lemon/fennel. Just the lightest sprinkle makes a big difference to my tastebuds. And FlavorGod's Gingerbread cookie topper mini-sprinkles gives a zing to all the protein yogurt I've been eating. I hope this helps some people looking for ideas to get away from the sweet tastes. I've also switch off premade protein shakes and back to Iconic brand protein powders. They taste be mild and not sweet, so once you get to the 8oz of liquids I recommend it. I have been getting out to do errands before I go back to work next week, however I haven't really started walking with exercise in mind. It's time to start today. I'm nine pounds down and very happy I made the decision for WLS. 59 since starting this journey with the Bariatric Center in November. I'm a foodie, and I was worried about not being able to enjoy foods in the future and I'm incredibly happy I am on the way to good health. On that note, I was taken off a blood pressure med and a statin by my GP yesterday. THAT was a win! For any of you who are having more challenges after your surgery. Hang in there! My heart is with you because I know that could be any of us. -
My rny was May 1st, and I've lost 15lbs since surgery (30 since the start of pre-op diet). I just feel like 15 lbs is low. It's an average of less than a pound a day. I've already stalled once at about 2 weeks out. I'm just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

I had the VSG with hiatal and ventrical hernia repairs on May 4th. The only issues I encountered was a lot of discomfort wearing a bra (caused a pressure rather than pain) and feeling very full after only 3-4 oz of liquid. The feeling full issue passed within a few days of walking 15 minutes every half hour/hour. Two weeks later I'm on pureed foods now and the full feeling is back; I can barely get 2oz of food at times. Walking has helped, as well as making sure not to drink anything 30 minutes before and after eating. I will say this. Get some throat drops to help with the sore throat because your throat may be even more sore after surgery, from the breathing tube. Good luck!

Congrats! Getting all the fluids in the 1st couple of weeks is hard! Just take little sips every 15 minutes. I have reminders set up through the Baritastic app.

Thanks for the information, if you don't mind can you post your milk diet. It seems to me whether it's the bypass or the sleeve everyone has a different regiment for the two weeks prior to surgery mine's just consist of two meal replacements 3 to 4 oz of a protein and two string cheeses in the host of liquids the first week and then the second week is all liquids

@Blessd1 I looked through all the recipes and some look amazing, some not so much but we are all different. They’ve given me lots of ideas though so thank you so much for this. I can’t find the strawberry vinaigrette however, do you have the specific link for the homemade recipe please? I’d love to try it along with the cherry one too! riccotta I adore so I now searching on homemade meals. im struggling with meat even ground chicken and beef at the moment so it may mean I’m now vegetarian. I just need to learn a new lifestyle but will wait until the camera down my throat reports. I met with my surgeon and he’s suggested charcoal to help with the flatulence. Double up on PPI in the meantime and advised I shouldn’t hesitate to take upto 3 cyclizine a day for nausea. Keeping the little bit of food I manage to get down in me is priority. Only problem is the anti-vomit meds make me zonk! I’ve lost 5 stones in 13 weeks (which is 70lbs) or 32kg. He didn’t seem concerned about this and seemed to act like it was expected or normal even but it does concern me at how fast the weight is dropping off me. I have another 5 stones to lose at most to hit a BMI of 25 so in less than 3 months I’ve lost 50% of my excess weight. Yes it’s good I’m losing weight BUT the well-being is more of a priority for me and it’s zero at the moment. I’m tall at 5 ft 9 inches too. When I’ve read weight loss averages on MGB patients, the average weight loss is 60% of their excess weight in 2 years! This comparison is why I’m concerned. I don’t personally think I’ll suit being a size 10! I’ve never been a size 10 UK clothes size and the excess loose skin potential comes with its own set of problems too. But I’ll worry about this and deal with it if it arises. so now I’ll wait for the camera investigation and keep taking it day by day. speak really soon chelle x
