Sleeved On Monday. Protein Making Me Ill
Stacey Nicole replied to Lauranbob Mc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a few protein powders I liked before surgery. After surgery I hated them and all the others I tried. I went through so much money finding something that worked. Luckily, I have a store called Nutmeg State Nutrition near my home and I went there for help. They are online - as a matter of fact they have a banner on this site. They sell a gel drink called proti - it does have 1 sugar. The gel goes into 8 ounces of water and tastes like juice. There are several flavors to chose from and theyre all yummy! My cabinet is now stocked with them - They saved me! Good luck! -
Sleeved On Monday. Protein Making Me Ill

You just had your surgery... I wasn't released from hospital until four days because I wasn't drink enough of anything. Hopefully in a few days you will start being able to drink more. My favorite Protein drink is a powder protein in a blender with a tablespoon of sugar free pudding mix and either a tablespoon of Peanut Butter or 1/4 of yogurt, and I use skim milk -
August 26th is the Date! Nervous Excited scared... mixed emotions
Macy6 replied to kasiesalas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My guess would be the sodium you would want to look out for. I am starting pre op diet tomorrow (it is a mix of protein shakes and two small meals) and my surgery date is the 27th. I am nervous and excited! -
Can you get hungrier after having a fill?
honk replied to Lunita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be that your body is fully recovering from surgery and 1) your regular appetite has returned 2) your body had been existing on liquids for WEEKS and is roaring back to life. Think of how when you're sick and don't eat for a couple days. When you start to feel better your body goes nuts and wants to eat everything.

Do you have a food scale? Even now after many fills I still weigh all my Protein. It is really easy to over estimate and yes I use a small lunch size plate. During this time it IS a diet. You will need to not only actively have smaller portions but also make good food choices. I don't even use the Benecol margarine anymore if I need something I use "butter spray". I've stopped buying nuts (yes I know they be healthy but not when you eat them by the hand full); crackers/cookies (even low fat ones), cheeses (except for low fat laughing cow). Take a good look at your pantry and decide whether a thin person would eat what's in there. If not give it away. FYI I did not get any rescriction until 9.4 CC's. So you COULD be many fills away from feeling anything. -
Oh and according to my nut, a pint of milk with 4 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder gives 61g protein, so if you're drinking ok, try that - then you can relax about what else you have!

One of the things that contributed to my stress about this surgery was not knowing what was going to happen. (What can I say, I'm a control freak.) So here is the play-by-play as it pertains to me of my surgery. Your mileage may vary! I'll try to come back and update it. Hopefully it'll be of use to someone—"and knowing is half the battle." Day before surgery Liquid-only diet; two bowls of phở broth, some Protein2O, apple juice, and sugar-free lemon jello. Got about 830 calories in. Had to take a shower with a special CHG (chlorhexidine gluconate) anti-septic body wash. It made my skin a bit "slippery". Packed my bag with my CPAP hose, a book, a spare shirt, some chanclas for walking, my cell phone charger, and my reading glasses. Put out the two pills I was supposed to take (no losartan because it interferes with anesthesia). Day of surgery Took another shower with CHG as required. Reported to the hospital at 0630 as requested. Was checked in and taken to pre-surgery holding. My fiancé was allowed to go with me as an exception, because I'm hard of hearing and rely on lip-reading which is impossible with so many masks and partitions in the way. A surgical RN came and told me to wipe my abdomen with CHG wipes, then put on my surgical gown (which was HUGE on me—I understand I'm a bariatric patient but I literally couldn't keep it on my shoulders). Then he put an IV in the back of my hand, took my vitals (I lost 10 lbs in the two weeks between my surgeon's consultation and surgery day), went through all my medications, put an anti-nausea patch behind my ear, and gave me a blood thinner in my IV. My surgeon came in and asked if I was ready, went over a few things, then went to scrub up. My anesthesiologist came in and asked if I had had anesthesia before (yes), and if I had any questions. I asked him to give me a TAP block at the end of surgery, which is a localized nerve block, like an epidural for your abdomen. It lasts 12-18 hours. I was whisked away and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room, where I was given cognitive tests (what is your name, what hospital are you at, who's the president, etc.) and given ice chips. Once that all proved satisfactory, I was wheeled to my room. I don't remember it, because I fell asleep. Once in the room they put leg compression stockings on me and gave me water, Crystal Light made way too sweet, chicken broth that tasted like a salt lick, and a thicker vegetable purée soup. I couldn't get the vegetable soup down. I forced the chicken broth, Crystal Light, and water. I felt very, very hungry and it was frustrating not to be able to just eat something. I took 3 or 4 laps of the surgical unit floor in my fetching anti-slip socks, and kept falling asleep. The pain from the gas was pretty bad and I spent a good 30 minutes just burping, much to the chagrin of the man in the other bed in the room (though he was moaning so he doesn't get to say anything). Around 1730 the nurse came in, saw that I had drunk what I could and had peed sufficiently (you pee into a graduated container), and that I could walk. She asked my surgeon's permission to discharge me, and I was in the wheelchair going out the door at 1830, exactly 12 hours after I arrived. When we got home, I pretty much washed my hands and face and went straight to bed. I got up probably every 2 hours or so, would have a couple of sips of protein shake or water, along with Gas-X (simethicone) or, as needed, Tylenol. I did get about 7 hours of sleep, in various chunks. I was able to lie, carefully, on my side, which is how I prefer to sleep. My CPAP did increase the gas pressure inside a bit but it was tolerable. Day 1 post-op My first bout of the 'foamies'. I tried to drink a CorePower protein milk way too fast and spent an hour and a half wandering around whimpering. It was actively painful and it felt enough like I needed to vomit that I had a lined bucket at the ready. Eventually, though, it subsided. Gas pain is still here and very real, but better. We went for a walk which absolutely tired me out—and it was barely 500 meters! Right now I am using the timer on my cell phone to remind me to drink 1/3 oz. of fluid every 5 minutes, and I feel full but it's manageable. I am alternating full ounces of regular water and protein water. I also made some Jell-O with extra protein powder but the thought of eating it leaves me cold. If I can get these bottles down plus the shake I had earlier, I'll be pretty close to 48 oz. of fluid which is my surgeon's requirement for the first week (bumps up to 64 oz. after that) and 41 g of protein which will have to do for the first day unless I manage to get some of the Jell-O down me. I have been taking Tylenol, Gas-X, and my ondansetron—the nausea is there but it's in the background, like when you step off a ship onto land at the end of a cruise. I haven't had enough pain to necessitate anything stronger than Extra Strength Tylenol. My incisions are clean (I took a shower).

Me And My Relationship With Cereal Has To End! Ugh!
Kthump replied to mrsbrown0330's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Kashi Go Lean nearly every day, too. It's soooo crunchy - and high in protein, as well. For a treat, I put 1/8 cup of the Kashi Crunch in my Chobani. (It's higher in calories -and lower in protein than the orig Kashi... but OH SO GOOD!). -
hiya, sorry to hear about your divorce, but what an exciting year for you! a new body, the excitement of dating again, new relationships - all at the same time! how fantastic! I had an email from my dietician last night who said the same as the surgeon; baby steps in the right direction is fine, we're doing really well and it's not uncommon for people to be where we are at our stage. As long as we're gradually improving, that's fine, and we don"t need to worry about anything. She said to be careful of that heavy, 'I've eaten a stone' feeling; she said that's what could stretch our sleeves, even if the amount we've eaten is tiny. If we do get that, it's because the density of the food is too think apparently and we need to make it more sloppy. She did suggest that tinned fish like mackerel and sardines is good for Protein if we can tolerate sloppy food - mixing with some tomato sauce if we need to loosen it. Hope that helps! Have you had lots of 'wow's from people you haven't seen for a while? I bet the compliments are flooding in now!

so many post op questions
Fallenangel2904 replied to wrightan5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off you are more then welcome here. This is a big lift change for everyone and its great you are looking for answers for her. She is lucky to have someone so caring. I am so sorry she's going through all this pain. I had quite a bit of pain after my surgery (I read about all sorts of people who had zero pain post op so I was kind of horrified by how much it hurt) when I came home the first few days were a struggle. If she is honestly in that much pain though I would reccomend going to an ER. 6 days is a long time to be in severe pain. By day 6 things had gotten to a tolerable level for me. I don't want to scare you, but when in doubt go to the ER. You said she has been vomiting has she been able to keep down anything at all? That worries me. That early out though the focus shouldn't be on getting Protein in but fluids. Protein is important yet, but fluids are number one. Keep her hydrated. Soup, even soup lacking protein is okay at that point. I was eating mostly cream based Soups at that point per my drs orders (was on full liquids) but honestly I worry about her pain level. If things do not improve please don't hesitate to take a trip the ER. I'm sending good thoughts to you and her! -
The thing my nut said is get whey protein isolate its the best form of protein I used these product pre op they are good just watch sugar no more then 5-6 grams my nut said

Next Step: Mushies. What Are Your Favorites?
LapBandSoccerMom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello friends, I was banded October 29th, and tomorrow marks two weeks post-op. Everything is going very well so far, and I have one more week of Protein shakes. As you can tell, I'm very much looking forward to some texture and flavor! I'd love to hear from you on what your favorite mushies are, which provide the most satiety and key tips for moving into this phase. Thank you! -
Recently Sleeved and wondering about calorie intake
meggiep replied to moongirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will definitely get better! Also- your diarrhea may not be because of the sweeteners- I had diarrhea for the first two weeks and then it cleared up. I am ot keen on artificial sweeteners at all but I encourage you to keep trying as the Protein drinks are an important way to get the protein I got used to the sucralose.. Another way would be to get unflavored protein - unjury has it and mix some into your yogurt and Soup. The Unjury chicken soup is great- it is a mainstay for me at 21 grams of protein. However- I suggest adding more water- I use 12-16 ounces- helps with the Fluid totals and makes it less salty. If you are able to get some Protein Drinks in that will boost your calories AND your protein. You are in this for the long haul and for me the chemistry of high protein , low carbs, and lots of Water has wrked beautifully and it is important not to leave any part out. Ideas-add milk to your soups- that adds protein, and also calories. Add a dollop of greek yogurt to a spicy or savory soup- it is like sour cream. Have full fat yogurt- you need to nourish yourself and that is NOT enough calories. It is so tempting without the hunger to just let yourself have that little and think it will mean bigger numbers, but the sooner you get the habits and the chemical flow of wieght loss in to place the better- and the sooner you will have the energy to kick butt work out! Don't let your body start consuming itself. -

5 days post op and i cheated!
reverie replied to Angeleyes716's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You won't lose the same as someone else. It's your journey; remember that. My only tips are exercise, Water, and Protein. Count your calories and see if it helps. @ OP. While you did cheat, I think it was a wise cheat. I wouldn't worry too much because it isn't worth the stress. Just pick yourself up and move on. -
first day transition from liquid to mushies
pnw218 replied to cwalker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The premade shakes worked best for me to insure the Protein. I used Atkins, Nutrilife and Premier. The Premier has 30 protein compared to 15 for the other two. I liked the chocolate flavor in all three. They are 11 oz and it would take me about 2 hours to drink it. In the beginning, I sometimes had two of those a day. I filled it around that with potato Soup, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, yogurt, SF chocolate pudding (LOL). I was fortunate that I was able to go from clears to full to mushy by the end of the first week, and felt great. Be cautious, use common sense and do what makes your stomach and you feel the best. Good Luck!! -
first day transition from liquid to mushies
Tiffykins replied to cwalker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I probably didn't walk as much as others that got in there protein from the beginning. But, I could not tolerate any of the Protein drinks, mixes, even the ready to drink made me sick, or the taste was horrific. When I first came home, I was pumped full of nutrients and calories through a pic line, and that gave me what I needed initially. I only went about 3 weeks without getting in my protein. Obviously, I didn't jump into 60 grams per day when I first hit mushies because restriction is extremely obvious on mushies. I had to work my way up. I took my Vitamins and supplements religiously, and wasn't willing to miss those. Overall, I had a super slow recovery due to my complications, but I don't necessarily think going without the full 60grams of protein per day set me back anymore than I already was. Hope that makes sense. -
Weight Gain At 2 Weeks Post-Op
YoungNY replied to YoungNY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it was a combination of a few things, Water retention cause I'm not drinking enough, using milk with Protein drinks and other higher calorie Protein Drinks, and increased muscle mass. My doctor weighs me on this high tech scale that gives out detailed readings. It said I gained 6 lbs, but lost 1.5 % body fat. So who knows... -

Use water with your protein instead of milk. Cut calories where you can and cardio exercise daily. -

Im 8 weeks post op and the first two weeks are suppose to be only liquids so u shouldnt be doing none of the stuff u r doing. You will stretch ur pouch or possibly rip it. Consume mostly water and certain broths until your two weeks are up. You can drink one protein drink a day. Protein is the last thing you should be worrying about right now because u have to heal.

To All The Newby Post-Ops
DLCoggin replied to lovelygirl01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually like Pure Protein flavored powders and their shakes so I haven't used unflavored powders. I have read success stories of people who don't like the flavored shakes or powders using the unflavored to help them get their daily protein. But taste (and texture) are very subjective so the best way would probably be for you to test it and see if you like or at least can tolerate it. A number of manufacturers offer free samples or smaller quantities for testing purposes before you have to lay out more money. Protein is very important so I would encourage you to keep looking and trying to find you something that will work for you! -
Okay. Starting to get worried about finding a Protein Drink I can handle. Thought the Isopure Protein Water was going to be the solution, but I tried it today (grape) and it's not going to happen. I'm getting sleeved in Mexico next week so want to be all set before then. Any recommendations? Also, should I be concerned with constipation while on the liquid diet? I've used Miralax successfully in the past, so will plan to do that again if necessary. Please help w/protein problem (what worked for you, where did you get it)!!! Thanks, Karen

After the 1st fill why do I think I'm eating to much?
pmorgan replied to Debbie P's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had my first fill on 1/2/08. It was 1.5 cc on a 4 cc band. I am watching my food intake and only eating 1/3 of what I used to eat. I'm eating solid protein first and very little carbs. But I've gained a pound!! I also never seem to be full. Occasionally if I don't chew things up enough or if I take too big a bite, I get that stuck feeling, but I never seem to be full. I need some helpful suggestions too. Please reply.
