    TASTE

changes in taste wouldn't be a stricture. With a stricture, you can't keep anything down. At first it's food - and as it progresses, you can't even keep fluids down. Strictures aren't very common with the sleeve, by the way - they're much more common with bypass, but even then, only about 5% of bypass patients get them. EDITED: you must have started this on previous thread since I just noticed that you responded to someone's comment about a stricture. Are you vomiting everything up? In that case, check with your surgeon's office. At 18 weeks out, that's not normal. Strictures aren't common with the sleeve, but on the other hand, they're not unheard of, either. But just contact your clinic and let them know what's going on. It could be a stricture if you can't keep anything down - but then, something else could be going on, too.
  2. Hello, I have a lap band and am seriously considering revision to gastric bypass. With the lap band, I have by far the most restriction with my first meal of the day. If I’m going to get stuck, overly full, or throw up, it’s almost always with breakfast which can set off a chain reaction throughout the day. I know the surgeries are very different, so I’m curious if people with bypass notice differences in their ability to tolerate food throughout the day. Thanks!
  3. I don't have experience with anxiety, but wanted wish you the best of luck with your bypass! Definitely a smart choice compared to the lap band! I had my bypass 16 months ago, and it was the best decision I ever made! Looking forward to following your journey!
  4. I am near 2 months out from Bypass to bypass revision. Weight loss is slower this time around, but I'm actually glad of it. It is consistent and manageable- I feel good. My vitamin levels have been stable - a million times better than after my original bypass. I have a long way to go yet, but so far, worth it.
  5. Hi Im new on here I recently had gastric bypass about 6 weeks ago. what you’re going through is absolutely normal I cannot stress enough to stay hydrated. It is incredibly important to stay hydrated! The weight loss is going to come off stay hydrated get the protein and stay with the diet that the doctor recommends do not try to skip the steps! just remember you’re in this for the long haul! I am currently six months out from my surgery and I am extremely happy with it just remember you’re doing this for your health and well-being… And you’re not alone… If you have an air bubble that you feel in your chest that is normal… A lot of us have been through it just stay hydrated listen to your doctor follow the steps and be proud of yourself.-holly 6mo post op gastric bypass you got this!

  6. Hey everyone! I just joined the site about a month or so after discovering it. I first considered weight loss surgery about 6 years ago. It was put on hold for varying reasons. Last year, I finally decided to move forward, then COVID hit. My first choice was the Lap Band, but after reading personal experiences on this site and others, I changed my mind. Also, my surgeon was willing to do the procedure, but he had made clear it typically was not as successful and had more long term complications (erosion, slippage, etc) than the sleeve or bypass. After scheduling an appointment to further discuss my options and the pros and cons of each type of surgery, I will now be having the gastric bypass procedure. Surgery is scheduled for next week (May 18th). I'm excited and also nervous. I have mild anxiety, but it's controlled without medication and I see my therapist occasionally. For anyone with anxiety, how did you limit nervous or anxious feelings prior to surgery?
  7. So I did have revision surgery sleeve to bypass. I’ll be honest and say straight up I did have it to help with my GERD. (Which I no longer have symptoms of) however also for weight loss! My highest weight (before sleeve) was 120kg. I got down to 90kg lowest however regained back up to 110kg. I am now 6 months post revision surgery and I am now down to my lowest ever of 80kg! I am so happy with my revision surgery and am happy with my results so far. Although my loss is a little slower this time around, I am sticking to my plan and weight is consistently moving downwards. No regrets. All the best to you :)

    Artificial Sweeteners?

I don't know why I used candidate 😂😂 Should have used Bypass sucess! 😂 Gotcha - I guess I would just have to play around with various Sweeteners post surgery to figure out which work the best for me. I do know Crystal Light is alright to use, which has sucrolose as the sweetner. Xylitol doesn't work with me now, so I am sure it won't after the surgery either.

    Artificial Sweeteners?

Okay you're a Bypass candidate - Can you tell me which artificial sweeteners work for you without causing any bloating or other side effects?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hi, FrouFrou. 25 pounds isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, and it sounds like you are ready to get things back on track. What is a "distal bypass?"

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hi fellow Feb ‘19ers - well, I was doing extremely well and as for all of us, Covid hit... child with autism at home, zero therapy for her, husband lost his job, yada yada I gained 25 lbs back. I really fell off the wagon, especially with alcohol. I hardly drank before but used it to get through those hard months. Even though I have gained, I have actually done pretty well by my standards haha. Skip to now - kid back at school 2 days a week, husband working again (from home) and I’m getting a grip on life again. I went to see my surgeon and we are working towards getting a distal bypass done. I’m currently taking Saxenda to get me started on the journey and so far so good. Anyway, I hope you are all doing well. The photos you have posted are amazing!

    One glass of wine....

You are absolutely right. The bypass definitely makes alcohol a big fat no-no. For sure it can create an alcoholic out of somebody who never had a problem very quickly. But the sleeve is not the same thing Thank goodness and I never had a problem with drinking alcohol in the past but I certainly enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. I had 3 oz of white wine last night over 2 hours. I never once felt buzzed and I enjoyed it very much with a little bit of cheese. As for soda I have never been a big soda drinker. I can't drink caffeine I can't tolerate it for the last four or five years I have had no caffeine in my life and I'm better off for it. And soda doesn't call to me thank goodness. I'm good with water. Every now and then I have Crystal light but I actually get bored of Crystal light and crave plain water.
  16. Hi all just joined this app. I had a gastric bypass in january, so far iv lost 32 pounds which I’m pleased with but lately it’s stopped havnt lost anything for the past 3 weeks and before that it was so slow. Can anyone help me and has this happened to anyone else ? Thanks.

    One glass of wine....

I was warned by a Bypass patient that she would be feeling the effects very quickly and had very low tolerance for alcohol. She also told me that in 45 minutes “I’m sober as a judge.” She is >10 years out and suggested no drinking. I was craving soda too. Bought a small can of Diet Pepsi and shook it enough to get all of the carbonation out. I drank it and realized...not the same...the craving went away and flat pop...😞.
  18. Could you post the foods that you can eat - others on the board may be able to make suggestions for recipes or meal plans? My personal experience after RNY bypass is that the underlying issues (whatever they are) that caused the disordered eating in the first place don't go away magically, and it's going to be a constant battle to keep on track. [well for me anyway]. I see you're in the UK too - I had my bypass privately here and had a UK dietitian who was very helpful. If you're interested in her contact information I can dm details?

    Restless Leg Syndrome

Slightly Less Fatty Matty, that is a relief for me to hear. I’ve wondered whether the gastric sleeve surgery might be better for me since it is not bypassing any of the nutrient absorbing small intestine. My first appointment with my doctor is in June and it will be interesting ho hear what he has to say.

    Scared of losing weight

You are not alone. I felt the exact same way before I had my gastric bypass. Worried about loose skin and flabby arms. I actually felt a bit of comfort and security in my fluffiness. I'm only a month out from surgery but I envisioned myself getting a trainer and toning, strengthening, and building muscle (I have never been fit but always saw myself as that person). I think what helped me is the fact that I won't have the lower back/hip pain and other issues that stood in my way. Like you I don't know how I'll be able to afford plastic surgery but I have definitely made it a goal to save towards down the line. One of my friends told me you have to love and accept your body at every stage. I know the changes may be hard at first but with acceptance and patience, we'll get through it.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hi everyone! This is my first time on this forum! My bypass surgery is scheduled for May 14th and I am both nervous and excited! I am starting to have doubts but it’s more about the apprehension of what could go wrong. I could use all the support I can get!!

    April surgeries

Wow! I had mine on 4/23 (bypass). I’m getting control over getting enough protein and fluids but my drs are still on this program schedule. I haven’t had any problems past my first night. However, I feel good and wanted real food so I skipped to eating soft foods yesterday. No problem at all! (Except yeah, my stomach gurgles more and I’m way more gassy). I eat fairly slow but I also suspect that I could eat a little faster than they say. Anybody try eating at a “normal” pace? Like not racing, just normal?

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hello Everyone, I am a little hesitant to write about my surgery because I absolutely do not want to scare anyone. My surgery was Monday, and my doctor had 2 surgeries Monday morning—a sleeve right before me and then my bypass. As far as the actual surgery, it went well. However, my recovery on Monday and Tuesday was really rough. I had severe nauseous—I was vomiting blood—all the surgeons said it was normal, but I kind of freaked out my husband and the nurses! They gave me 3 different anti-nausea meds before I was able to start drinking water and ice chips. Pain wise was not too terrible—the gas pain is worse than the soreness from the surgical pain. I was not able to walk much on Monday because I was so nauseous and vomited every time I got out of bed. I only took pain meds on Monday evening. Once I was able to tolerate liquid and walk, I felt better—I was also able to tolerate Gas X. My husband brought me a HEATING PAD and it was a lifesaver. I strongly suggest packing one in your bag. I am home now—resting and sipping—no hunger, and I am still taking anti-nausea medicine. Oh and FYI—the other patient who had the sleeve before me—he had ZERO problems. He was up walking around and eating his hospital tray of liquids and went home the next morning. I think everyone has their own story and experience—my recovery was just a little rough because of the nausea and vomiting.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hello, First time poster here, having surgery this Friday, May 7th, Gastric Bypass. It's been a year since I started this journey and am so happy to finally be at the middle mark. With the pandemic, it is pretty exciting that I made it this far. Below are my why's. I am so looking forward to being at a healthy weight for once in my adult life, and finally doing something just for myself. It has taken me a long time to finally prioritize myself at the top. Very happy I kept at it and didn't give up. The pre-op diet has been tough. I've been challenged to eat and keep hydrated. In part for not wanting to gain any weight before surgery. Not a smart move as dehydration and low blood sugar has been my experience these last couple of days. I've been finding comfort and support through your posts, so thank you for that! The Sleeve vs Bypass?

Reading this just 25 minutes after your update! I just submitted everything to my insurance today, and I’m going with bypass. This forum actually what was convinced me, last year, to do bypass. 1. too many stories of revision surgeries after sleeve since your body still absorbs the same amounts of food, unlike bypass. I know it’s not everyone, but I saw too many to make me feel confident in my ability to comply long term without a second layer of help (malabsorption.) 2. Diabetes runs rampant in my family. I’m not there yet but it’s an eventuality I wanted to do away with. 3. Someone above mentioned that bypass is so drastic... and sure, it is, but it doesn’t make sleeve less drastic in comparison. With sleeve, your stomach is essentially amputated, and with bypass your intestines are rearranged. They’re both hard, I just had to pick the “hard” I felt was worth all the trouble. Bypass was it for me. I spoke with my nutritionist today about duodenal switch, and though you lose more weight, you have more vitamin deficiencies and it’s harder to carry a pregnancy, which I eventually want to do. I’m glad you made the right choice for you!
