  1. I have surgery in 6 weeks and my biggest fear is loosing weight than gaining it all back. Is anyone 3 years post op or more and kept the weight off. If so what is your diet? Do you need to eat really healthy to maintain weightloss?

    Why can’t I stop itching?

Im only 3 weeks oost io but my hands have been itching like crazy. My Dr said it was common and a result of not enough fluid intake and the skin is dry. I started moisturizing a lot more and its gettibg better Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. Okay so I’m asking to see if anybody else is/has experienced what I’m going through. As of today I’m 17 weeks post op and I’ve done wonderfully so far. Didn’t have any adverse reactions and it’s been fairly smooth sailing. Then about 3-4 weeks ago, my skin has become SUPER DUPER itchy and small bumps keep breaking out all over my arms, legs, and torso. Just had my 3 month labs done and everything seems to be just fine. I haven’t tried any new foods and all my meds are the same. Normally I would think maybe the new bariatric supplements are to blame, but I’ve been taking those since the week of surgery and they didn’t bother me before. I’m practically bathing in fragrance free lotion that I’ve always used and the itching is driving me nuts!
  5. Okay so I got this wish pre-WLS because of breast cancer 10 years ago and the ensuing reconstruction. When it was time for reconstruction (free of course, but the admission price was to ensure a year of chemo/radiation) I opted to go from a 40g to a 40b. It was the best decision I’d ever made and the first time I put on a “regular” bra I cried tears of joy. Now that I’ve lost almost 60 pounds, the girls are basically the same size. I guess whatever the surgeon left me with is gonna stubbornly stick around at least for now because I still wear a b cup, but now it’s in 38s, which are getting very very loose around the band.

    "Specialty Plastic Surgeon" too far?

I was willing to consult with him, except he didn't return my calls - I feel like there's something wrong with a patient having to chase down a doctor. Like, I'm paying YOU tens of thousands of dollars and you're the guy that's supposed to look out for me pre- and post. Answer the phone? I have been working with a trainer pretty hardcore starting at 4 months post-op. I talked to him about the skin issue - if I lost more weight after reaching my personal goal. He thinks that since, especially by 13 months, I will have built up significant muscle on my arms that even if I did the arm lift at 13 months if I lost anymore weight, any loose skin would easily snap back, rather than droop. And even if it did, I am not opposed to revisional plastics down the line if it bothers me THAT much. My bariatric office knows I plan on plastics by the end of the year and they are okay with it, since I have exceeded their expectations thus far. Something I will certainly discuss with my plastic surgeon regardless, obviously. I'm going to consult end of August/September and if I don't get a good feeling or am not 100% confident, I will continue to pursue other options. There is a second "specialist" surgeon my office recommended that is 3 hours away, but they are in the mountains and it would be impossible to reach them during any inclement weather, so that ones pretty much out of my thoughts. I also don't trust the hospital system they are with. At least the 2 hour away guy is in the same hospital system as my local plastic surgeon. I don't know - things to consider in the next few months. When I had lipo in 2009 I lived in Baltimore. It was 11k worth of lipo on virtually every part of my body (it shouldn't have even been done). I got very, very ill and had to stay with my mother, two hours away from Baltimore. I had to see the plastic surgeon twice a week because of how sick I was and the four-hour roundtrip was horrific and painful to make. In 2017 I had a breast reduction and my nipple starting rotting off! Thankfully my surgeon was local and I could see him right away and he identified that it was an allergy to Neosporin and I was able to see him quite often and it saved the graft. That's why I have such a preference for someone very close to me. You just never know what insane thing could happen.
  7. It isn't really an insurance thing, as few of us get any insurance coverage for PS, but rather the time it takes for the body to stabilize. Once the weightloss stops, fat and musculature shift around some and the skin can shrink back some as things adjust to the new you, which is why most PS advise waiting up to a year (at least 6 months) after reaching ones goal weight. Around the time that I reached goal, I started working with a personal trainer along with my wife, and rolling around on a mat doing stretches and exercises, I could feel the skin on my back folding up; a year later it wasn't noticeable - either I had adapted my moves to avoid it, or things had tightened up some (likely a bit of both.) Likewise, around the same time I had new seats for my racecar fitted to me (they're supposed to be snug) but a year later, my butt was loose in it, though my weight hadn't changed, so things had certainly moved around. This is another of those tradeoff things, but may well be one of those things that is second nature to a WLS specialized PS that may not occur to a more general PS. Again, talk to him about it and see what he says - it may or may not be a big deal in your particular circumstance. It may also still be worth the effort to get a consult with the less convenient specialist PS to get his view on your situation, even if you don't intend to go with him.
  8. Thanks for your responses. I may go with gallbladder. I am just worrying more about recovery time. An injured firefighter is like an injured quarterback. You sit the bench ... you loose your spot.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I started losing a lot of hair daily. Luckily it’s thick, so I have some wiggle room. I’m taking double my biotin and collagen, but it doesn’t seem to matter. I think it boils down to protein and water intake, which I’m sucking at. Had some major trigger events two weeks in a row and I noticed I had been eating carbs a lot more than I had been. The last three days I’ve hardly eaten anything, as my stomach is either upset or I just don’t have a desire to eat. Which is probably the cause of my feeling tired a lot. I’m also goi g to see if my Dr can run my labs. I’m thinking I might be a bit anemic. Everyday is a new day to start back on track though. So here’s hopping tomorrow is better. I did have a NSV. I now weigh well below the required weight limit to do indoor skydiving. I went this last Saturday for the first time ever. It was fun, but nerve racking as the flight suit was a little snug in the hips area. But never the less I did it! I also pulled out last years shorts and they are too loose on me! That is another positive NSV. Trying to stay on the positive side, even though the tummy is not happy right now. Hope we all have a better June!

    Collagen

She basically said that we shouldn't ingest it, but that it is fine to use on your skin. In fact, she highly recommended it topically. I believe she does look younger than her age!
  12. I had zero loose skin and zero hair loss. My wife, who also had the surgery, has some loose skin on her arms but had zero hair loss. Our surgeon told us to eat tons of protein 140 for her and 200 for me to prevent hair loss. We did that along with starting a workout routine. My advice, prioritize protein and start working out if you want to minimize these issues.
  13. This was brought up in a 2015 forum....But I need an excuse. to tell my coworkers. If they found out I will loose my spot. I am a firefighter , so they will have no mercy.
  14. Hello All, I’m on Day 5 post-op of an abdominoplasty (minus the muscle tightening). I have a few questions for anyone who has done this and can maybe help? 1) My compression feels like I’m stuffing 2 pounds of sausage in a 1 pound casing. Should it BE that tight? Hubby says yes, that he made a point of asking the surgeon and then watching them do it while I was in recovery. My sides feel like they BURN (no incision, just like the skin is being rubbed raw!). I put an old cotton shirt under the compression garment, but it doesn’t feel like it’s helping. Could it be something under the skin that feels like it’s irritated or burning? Anyone feel this before? 2) How long did you feel so sore that you couldn’t sleep? The compression garment doesn’t help. It digs and digs - into my ribs, under my breasts, etc... I feel like I want to claw it into a million pieces! 3) I have drains that need to come out - hopefully Wednesday. I am actually terrified of this. Does it hurt? What is the process like? My surgeon only said, “it takes like 4 seconds and doesn’t hurt.” But I’m reading other people say it does and now I don’t know what the heck to believe. It’s like the easiest part of this is the actual incision area! That barely hurts. But where the swelling is, where the skin is stretched so tight, where the garment rubs and digs, THAT is what hurts! I’m trying to avoid pain meds, haven’t taken them in a few days, but I’m slowly feeling like I *need* them - just to sleep. And I’m afraid of that feeling. Like I’m dependent. I’m going on 2 days with like 2 or 3 hours of total sleep. And I feel crazy. Thanks!
  15. I want to go to the plastic surgeon that did my breast reduction because he did an awesome job and is 30 min away. My bariatric office said I should see someone that focuses on bariatric patients and skin removal, and referred me to someone 2 hours away (longer during rush-hour - DC traffic UGH). I tried calling them twice and no one calls back, which is VERY discouraging. Also, after every surgery I've had (including the two plastics), I've had complications. I don't want to have to drive 2 hours for check-ups and emergencies??? I called several other plastic surgeons a bit closer and none do arm lifts, EXCEPT my plastic surgeon. My bariatric office says they like my guy personally, but his interest is on breast reconstruction so they refer people to this other person who is far away. I haven't consulted yet with my guy, but his office says that yes, they do them. Does it truly matter if I go to a "specialist" surgeon? The distance is very scary to me, given my history... and I already know my guy does awesome work. Did you go to someone that focuses on bariatric patients?
  16. you may be apple-shaped. I was - and still am even though I'm at a normal weight. I had a lot of loose skin in my torso, I had bat wings on my arms but not huge (I've seen WAY worse), and my thighs have a little loose skin on them but are pretty thin (as in - major "thigh gap"). I had the loose skin taken off my torso. I also had an arm lift but it didn't have as much "wow factor" as the torso work since the bat wings really weren't that bad to begin with. And I didn't bother with the thighs. At my age (I'll be 60), my mini-skirt days are long over...

    Postive Self Talk

We can be the harshest person to ourselves. We get enough negative from those around at times and it we are not positive we may believe their lies. We get upset our letting our body and health get so bad. We lose weight then it's the loose skin and things we have to work out in or lives even emotionally. Try to keep this post in mind and speak positive everyday. Get going tell us great things about you. Sent from my LM-Q710(FGN) using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Hello Everyone! I am post-op RNY, surgery date July 2014, starting weight 302, surgery date weight 290. Today, I’m 190, and I’m four days post-op from an abdominoplasty. Surgeon was able to remove 15 ponds of skin. I’m hopeful to be 175-180 when I’m healed and all my swelling goes down. Here are before and after (the “after” is from 2 weeks ago at the beach, before my plastic surgery). I like to come and read about everyone’s successes. Your stories are always so familiar and comforting to me. Very few people understand the struggles we’ve faced, the nastiness, the hateful attitudes, the condescension (“hey, you should feel lucky we even MAKE clothes in your size!”), and even though I don’t post much, I’ve so enjoyed seeing the happy transformations. ❤️hugs to everyone on this journey! Carmen
  19. Maybe the loss of fat all over your body instead of a blood dyscrasia . I have been having bruising without remembering any bumps, falls or trauma that could produce it. My PCP just laughed, said it probably is just a facet of getting older, not only have you diminished your fat padding but your skin is naturally much thinner. Oh well, my over-active imagination had me developing leukemia, he keeps telling,me my RNY has made me a much healthier person and then immediately sends me off for yet another testing. And I have appointments set,up for my ears and eyes,v2 areas he as yet had missed. I want one of those labels like they put on the inside of car doors stating the date of my Last Servicing! Perhaps center it on my Forehead where everyone can readily see it!😛🌈🌺🌼🌸
  20. Sleeved 3/20/18. Almost near target weight. Surgery weight 353. Current weight 226. I am getting bruises on my stomach, halfway between belly button to point wear stomach hangs lowest. I still have fat in my stomach to loose. About 4 inches out from belly button A few weeks ago I got a sudden bruise on my right. I did not suffer any injury that would cause the bruise. I was very surprised. A nice purplely one. Concerned me enough in magic marker the edges to seen if it got bigger. Now, I have a similar one, almost same position on my left side. And a third one; smaller, light tan, higher and closer to my button. My first one has since dissappered. Could any of these bruise marks be related to weight loss or loose skin? 21. Thx for allowing me to join. I had surgery 2014 @200lb. Today, 5yrs later, weighing in 50 HEAVIER than surgery date. I have MANY autoimmune diseases-no cure, but steroids are used to get under control. One of the diseases actually attacks my thyroid gland, causing hypothyroidism (Hashimoto Disease). Has anyone else had this crazy roller coaster ride?!? Besides loosing my sanity, I’m about to give up on losing anymore. I eat VERY healthy, but I had to STOP walking bc the bones & joints in my feet are wearing down and breaking down. Autoimmune diseases are just the opposite of a healthy immune system. Healthy-immune system attacks any bacteria, infections and destroys it. Autoimmune-My immune system is wired backwards-immune system sees HEALTHY tissue/organs as “bad stuff” and attacks healthy tissue/organs instead. (Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, bladder, skin, hair, stomach, etc.) Any pointers from anyone with autoimmune diseases also trying to get back to a healthy weight? I have refused to take anymore steroids period. I’m afraid the damage is done to my cervical & lumbar spine as well as the thyroid. Trying to regulate thyroid w/meds for over 5yrs. I’m desperate and need LOTS OF PRAYER. I’m so tired of being tired & frumpy as well as sick all the time. Plz help😩
  22. Hello all! A few months ago, I posted asking about doing plastic surgery to remove my “apron” of skin. Originally, I intended a panniculectomy. I met with a surgeon, and we went back and forth. He was advocating for an abdominoplasty, and I wasn’t interested in the recovery/pain involved with that procedure. But he didn’t think I’d wind up happy with the simple panniculectomy. We finally reached a compromise of sorts. He did an abdominoplasty, minus the muscle tightening. While he was at it, he gave me a slight butt and thigh lift, removing a chunk of skin/fat - so-called “saddle bags” - from my sides/flanks. I also had my mons lifted (ladies, this was actually the part I wanted most, if you can believe it!) I am currently 4 days into recovery. I’m SORE! I’m tired. I’m a bit swollen. Everything feels tight. I’m in a compression garment, and I feel like 2 pounds of sausage stuffed in a 1 pound casing. Lolol I walk hunched, can’t stand up straight, I have 2 drains, and I hate the idea of doing and undoing this ensemble so much, that I actually skip showers to avoid the hassle (and I normally shower AT LEAST once a day!). The surgeon said, pre-surgery, he was maybe being a bit ambitious with the marks he’d made on my body. He was hopeful to get 90% of the skin. He actually got all of it, and then some! 15 pounds of skin, gone. And he said it was all skin. He didn’t need to do any lipo, as there wasn’t any fat. I will keep you all posted with my progress. But if you’re thinking of doing this, I’m happy to share whatever info I have. I’ll also post pics when I’m feeling better! Carmen

    6/5 sleeve experience

I wanted to check in and post my experience. I was miserable during the pre-op phase diet, I cheated with last meals almost once a day until the 3 day water fast which I adhered to. The last 3 days were honestly not that bad, just uncomfortable because of being hungry. My angelic wife was supportive and did the pre-op diet with me :). The surgical procedure was fast, I struggled with some moderate pain, gas pain from the CO2 belly inflate. I am anti narcotic and needed it for a long drive home (9 hrs), I don’t recommend that! That said I used the oxy suspension to sleep for the first 2 days and it will be in the trash this week. I am type 2 diabetic, I lost 2 meds post surgery and now I am only on metformin, Prilosec, vitamins and Prozac. The after surgical effects are what you would expect: needed some time to pee normally, it took some days to pass gas but now it’s flowing better (taking a stool softener), hurts to sit up and lay flat, driving is a chore, mild stomach cramping, and skin pain at the 4 surgical sites (mainly the 15cm one). I have met the water goals post surgery and pushed it once and almost puked. I don’t recommend that, I am tolerating broth, clear protein drinks, sugar free jello we’ll just struggling with my behavioral issues to want to eat crap food. I do not feel hungry most of the time, unless food commercials are on TV or I walk in a store. I have lost a tremendous amount of weight so far (around 12 lbs so far), and suspect I will be in the 230’s tomorrow. I exercised prior to the surgery by doing P90X to build as mush muscle as I could. I think that helped a lot. I have been walking a lot also and try to get up each hour to walk around the house. My recovery has been very fast, each day it seems like it’s 50% better, I can sleep on my side now with a bit of left shoulder pain that’s is getting better. I watched my wife eat last night, and I was surprised that it did not bother me. Here are some neat things I think about: I will be a normal weight again (185), it will be nice to fly in a small seat, maybe I can get off all my meds, I will not be pre-judged in job situations for being morbidly obese, I might live as long as my wife to enjoy our life together, no 3 xl clothes, hopefully my chronic back pain will lessen.
  24. I've heard that before too! There's definitely a difference between head hunger and real hunger and to have it dismissed as head hunger for all of us is just ignorant. That would be like saying we all loose weight at the same rate and if you don't your just not following your program! Not the case....everybody is different.
  25. I’ll take this arm (with that extra wiggle of skin at the bottom) any day of the week. Being morbidly obese SUCKED
