    Trim Away

Whew. Thanks for giving me a better idea of what your eating. I understand meal replacement on the run. Many sites sell products marked to bariatric patients. Shop around and compare prices before you buy. An eleven pound weight bounce is manageable. I maintain a ten pound weight bounce. When the scale moves up. I go back into weight loss mode to get it back down to 130's Your not alone. Most sleeve feel less restriction year+ out. Its normal. Know that your stomach has not stretched back to its original size.** (revisions are rare. If you think it's stretched and you need a revision contact your surgeon to get it diagnosed)** Now that you can consume more food, Its finding ways to fill the extra space without going over your calories/macros to maintain/lose weight . It's also finding foods that keep you feeling less hungry. Honestly, real food is how I manage the extra sleeve capacity/hunger. I hope you find what works for you. As you can tell, I'm not a fan of proceed replacement products. To each their own. Products that break down rapidly or liquids don't keep me full. (example protein shakes, soups, chips) Items that have more bulk help with hunger. I keep quest bars in my car for quick food on the run. (cost effective and easy to find locally)

    Nervous

Well say to YOURSELF I do not have to put out on everything I see for fear I might never taste again. That helped put you where you are today, seeking a surgical revision. Many of the foods you love you will eat later.on, but you either will eat just a small portion or you may find they don't taste as good as you remember or they flat out will disgust you. Start tapering down now, that way when you start your liquid diet it won't be like you're trapped in a thunderstorm and can't escape. Think of it as starting to go into Spring Training , it's not baseball its LIFE-ball, and it is important. Come back here if you need help, we all have faced these demons and won the battle, we have tips that can help. And Good Luck because you may find you need it!

    Sleeve or Bypass... help!

So glad I found this thread -- I am currently knee deep in testing for my hernia. I was noted to have a "large" hiatal hernia after massive heartburn. I was sleeved in 2016 and have lost 145lbs and weigh about 140-145 lbs now. I am a healthy eater, and follow my surgeons guidelines to a T . I moved to a new state, and haven't had follow up for a bit but when all this heartburn started I had to seek someone. Ive had the barium swallow, abd ct scan, and ph probe with esophageal testing. My Dr is trying to determine if a repair for my hernia is an okay idea, or do I need to be reverted to bypass? I am so torn. I have been so successful with the sleeve and I feel like being revised would be a big difference for me, however there is a possibility my esophagus would not withstand the heania repair as there isn't much stomach they can use to aide in the repair and he talked of using mesh to help with that...which makes me so nervous.. Has anyone been through a situation like this and how did you determine which was best for you? I am scared and sick and tired of being put through all this testing...
  5. It is very strange. Everyone I talked to on BariatricPal has said once their doctor put in “medically necessary” the insurance providers approved. My insurance coordinator said once they see bariatric surgery they default under the rules of their bariatric requirements even though the revision isn’t for weight loss but GERD
  6. I had to revise to bypass as well and I'm diabetic. Unfortunately it did not put my diabetes in remission. My BMI is 26. I am still on meds....two pills in one though. I was on 5 shots of insulin a day so it's a huge improvement. I was hoping I could go off all meds but nope! Everyone is different though.
  7. I'm not diabetic, but I had a revision. My surgery was on a Wednesday and I took off a week and a half. I have a desk job. Good luck!
  8. Found him, his pen name is @ Jonathan C, I'm putting the @ on in the hopes it will trigger him to get in touch and I'm sure there are more out here! Good Luck and may your revision work well!
  9. I've had revision from band to RNY. I've had band for 8 years before I had it removed. It almost killed me. Now have RNY Despite some problems the sweet taste of being normal weight makes it worth it especially after being obese for fifty years
  10. Forums Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forum Post Reply Revision from Sleeve to By-Pass lrm1986 on 1/21/19 10:19 am Hey there, I’ve not posted for a very long time. I had sleeve in 2014 like many I have horrible GERD, my doctor recommended revision about a year ago and I chickened out. I love my sleeve and I really don’t want to have surgery but I’m diabetic and my Endocrinologist says the antacids have a high potential to cause kidney damage over the long haul (which diabetics are already prone too)..so he wants me off of them! I’m at my goal weight, so I’m not worried about losing anymore but my sleeve never put my diabetes in full remission, it did get better but I’m still in two meds, I’m wondering if any sleevers had this happen with their diabetes and did a revision then put it in remission? Also how long were you off work with revision? Any other tips or information would be great! Thanks

    Sleeve to Bypass

Hello, Sorry you are having the pain...I didn't have much of that at all w/ sleeve or bypass revision surgery, but I did with my open abdominal hernia surgery. Brutal, unrelenting pain in the area you described it... back/shoulder pain....ugh..... That is gas pain, as people have already told you. People say walking helps, please try that, it may help you...it didn't help me. My pain lasted for almost 3 weeks, never thought it would go away, but it finally did. You are only a few days out, yours may not last long....but seriously, walk as much as you can, it's worth a shot to try and push the gas out.

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

I just had my surgery on the 24th. I’m in British Columbia, Canada. I had the sleeve in February 2017 and just had a revision due to acid reflux. I was initially with a doctor in Victoria, who was useless. Went to see him for 7:years and went nowhere. Appointments were maybe 3 minutes long if you’re lucky and I live 8 hours plus a 2 hour ferry ride away! Switched to Dr. Sampath in Richmond in the summer of 2015. Had my orientation in October 2016 and sleeved Feb 2017. Amazing man. Covered by medical services plan in BC as health related. Was over 300 lbs.
  14. I didn’t have to do a liquid diet before my sleeve, or revision. I do notice that a lot of people do though. I think it is based on doctor preference.
  15. Sleeved February 4, 2017 Bypass January 24, 2019 I had the revision due to acid reflux. I have a lot of discomfort in my upper back/shoulder area that I didn’t have after the sleeve. Yesterday I also had extreme constipation and think I may have pushed to hard (sorry TMI but I can’t find help online). Anyhow. I don’t have continual pain in my abdomen, just when I move and no leakage. It’s more the back pain/discomfort that is concerning me. Thinking about it it goes from mid back up to shoulders. I can only sleep lying on my back as I’m scared to lie on my side and end up getting up every 2 hours due to my back. So I guess my questions are: is this discomfort/pain normal? When should I be concerned? No vomiting, fast heart rate, nausea... I'm pretty sure the gas has passed now. Sorry this is all over the place. I hope this makes sense. It’s 136 am 😂
  16. Hi everyone! I’m scheduled for a revision on 2/19 for the RNY. I was originally sleeved 11/2014 and currently have awful acid reflux.

    New here! Revision patient!

You should still be able to lose weight. I mean, after all, they do revisions from sleeve to bypass when people haven't lost enough, too. But I wanted you to be aware. Better to be able to discuss this with your surgeon ahead of time. I didn't know until after and I went into a total panic over it.
  18. I live in the east bay...wondering if anyone is near me?

    New here! Revision patient!

I had a sleeve to bypass revision last October for reflux. I didn't want it either, but by 10 every morning my voice was hoarse and anything acidic or spicy burned all the way down my throat. I would wake up at night with acid in the back of my nose. I was taking the max dose of Prilosec 2x/day plus Tums as needed. My throat is nearly healed now. The main issue I'm having now is that I don't feel any restriction with the bypass. I had very tight restriction with my sleeve and I depended on it. Now I have to be much more conscious of portion sizes because my stomach won't say "No Mas!" Are you in maintenance or are you still losing weight?
  20. Hi everyone! I was originally sleeved in March of 2016. I had an annoying burping thing pretty much from the beginning, but I lost about 90lbs in 6 months...and have held pretty steady since. Then the extreme reflux started! Fast forward to yesterday....I spoke with my surgeon and it has been decided that I need to be revised to an rny. Definitely not happy about it, but I’ve been taking 3 nexium a day and still having reflux and regurgitation. The newest issue appears to be an ulcer. This is really the last thing I wanted to do, but I’m very worried about the damage that’s being done to my esophagus. I have developed a raspy voice and scratchy throat, so I know it’s becoming a problem. It looks like I’ll have surgery either in March or April....I’ll probably know in a week or so. Anyone else here a revision from VSG to RNY??

    HUNGRY!

I'm now, unbelievably, 11 weeks post op! where did the time go? I'm a slow learner and a very slow loser! ha ha But, I can confidently say that solid foods make such a difference! I was experiencing everything you have all said during the earlier days of post op. Now, as long as I have the right combination on my dinky little weeny plate, then by the time I've eaten the protein bit I'm really too full to eat much more. So, I am having some of the veg/salad on the plate as well just so that I don't get completely bored with plain protein. Still learning, and still very much in the 'OMG, I'm going to fail at this and do it all wrong'... I'm freaking out every damn time I eat something that isn't 'good'! I've become obsessed and guilt ridden because of my slow loss. But, I keep having to remind myself that the scale is going down, I did have a band before revision to sleeve and I am freaking old! ha ha It's a marathon not a sprint for me ... x

How to Go about Lap Band Removal?

Thank you very much for all those who responded. It really made me feel better getting this support, even if only online. I have some good news. In a moment of desperation, I gave the bariatric group of the public health system in my city a call, not expecting much. I left the coordinator there a voice message explaining my situation. She got back to me a day later asking me to go to my GP and ask him for a referral to the group so that they could take me on as a patient! I can then decide then with the bariatric surgeon(s) that will see me what to do with the band. Monitoring it and keeping it in. Taking it out. Revising to another surgery, etc... I was so excited I couldn't believe my ears!!! I expected them to turn me away like they had done when I first moved here 7 years ago. Back then, they asked me to go back to my original surgeon as they only looked after their own patients! I suspect that with the high failure rate of the band, they realized it would just be unethical to turn patients who had done it elsewhere away when some of the band complications can be deadly. In all cases, I have an appointment with my GP in 10 days to ask him for a referral to the group. I really can't wait and for the first time in years feel like I will finally get the care and support I need. Given how things work here in the public health system, it may take a few months though before I am seen by the bariatric group, but better later than never I guess! On the negative side, I seem to have developed a chronic bad breath problem that I never knew about. My mom who has been staying with me for the last two weeks noticed it. No matter how much I brush my teeth, eat or not eat, it seems to be there. I suspect I have had this for some time without knowing it as I live on my own. I am pretty sure it's related to the band.

I do not wanna do gastric bypass!

dying from any weight loss surgery is almost unheard of these days. Back in the 60s or 70s, yes - but not now. These surgeries have come a L-O-N-G way and are extremely safe now. Mortality rates on gastric bypass are 0.3%. It's even lower for the sleeve. That means you have a 99.7% chance of pulling through just fine. And you will. vitamin deficiencies are rare if you take your vitamins religiously. You have to take vitamins with the sleeve, too. dumping - not all RNY'ers dump. I know LOTS of RNY'ers who've never dumped (I haven't, either). The statistic I see thrown around on these and other boards are that 30% of us dump. I don't know if there are any hardcore research statistics behind that, but suffice it to say, lots of us don't dump (I kind of wish I did - it would keep me from eating some of the things that I shouldn't!) lastly, if you have GERD, you're taking a big risk with getting the sleeve. It could be fine - or your GERD could get a lot worse. I know of several people who have had to revise from VSG to RNY because of GERD. I had GERD pre-surgery, and I didn't want to risk it getting worse - so the choice was a no-brainer for me.

I do not wanna do gastric bypass!

Do you know this persons medical history? All of the conditions behind the complications? Is it the same surgeon? Complications can arise from any surgery. Keep in mind if you get a sleeve and you already have reflux or similar issues you could be facing a needed revision if your problem worsens anyways. It may be more prudent to listen to the surgeon and opt for bypass now than undergo two operations. You likely would need new approval but that does not necessarily mean a longer wait once you have insurance approval to change the form, but a longer wait is worth it to make sure you get the needed surgery. You need to get the surgery you are comfortable with but why base a decision on a friend of a friend situation and let that influence your health and medical decisions?
