    Exercising after the sleeve...

You can definitely start walking outdoors or on the treadmill. I tried the elliptical machine around the first ir 2nd week, but I didn't have the strength so I stuck with the threadmill. I started spinning around the 4th week. 8-9 lbs in 6 days is great. I also agree with catwoman 15-25lbs is average so prepare yourself for that. Everyone loose at different rate.

    The Maintenance Thread

Not a VET or Exercise-r But I noticed the vast difference from when i was strength training after surgery vs. When i had to stop. My skin still thanks me for going had when I did because its tighter in the places I focused on 😭 I also think sustainability and flexibility is always a good idea when planning a fitness lifestyle. I think it why walking& running is very popular. Its why i choose to walk
  3. you are correct - insurance companies will sometimes cover it if you have documented proof of medical problems from the excess skin, like chronic rashes. See your PCP when something flares up so you'll have a paper trail. Without a medical necessity, it's not likely to be covered.

    The Maintenance Thread

EXERCISE. I'm assuming that the long term successful maintainers have some sort of exercise routine incorporated into their lives. How much of it do you do now, and what do you do? Tips? I know that the loose skin is a fact of life now, but have you noticed any firming up of the post weight-loss sag? It's crazy that I actually like getting up and about and moving now. I feel like something is missing on those rare days when I don't at least get my daily 6k walk in. This morning I went for 10k and actually RAN the last 2k!! Madness. I do need to invest is some tighter clothes though as I can feel myself "jiggling" in the back...that and my pants kept slipping down over my butt.

    SWEET JESUS MY HAIR!!!!!

I’m sorry you are dealing with this. I’ve had difficulty with thinning hair for some time. I started to keep it short because everything pulled my hair out in clumps. Even just to comb it. I can’t afford to lose hair, mine is like baby hair, very thin strands. I usually keep it extremely short. But then it’s hard going for haircuts. Post op. I’ve been taking gummy vitamins but I make sure they are Whole Foods vitamins. Garden of life makes a good Whole Foods women’s multi vitamin. (There are others as well I might try rainbow light chewable multi vitamin next time) And Natures Way makes a good hair skin and nails gummy with extra collagen. Even if you can swallow pills gummies or liquid vitamins absorb better. And even better if they are Whole food based. I also take omega gummies for the EFAs. A b complex. And of course calcium. For hair, You need vitamin A, b complex vitamins too especially biotin and also collagen. I get my vitamins from vitacost and always get coupons. I haven’t bought bariatric specific vitamins because the multi vitamin all have iodine and I’m allergic. Some basic vitamins like centrum do nothing and don’t absorb any benefits at all. I use cleansing conditioner on my hair and a scalp massage brush in the shower. Since a healthy scalp helps healthy hair. I’m not as far along so I don’t know what will happen with my hair. I’m just taking it one moment at a time. I hope you find the answers you need.

    Rate of weight loss

Yes the heavier a person is the more drastic the weight loss is, aong with other factors. Men also tend to loose weight faster than women. Remember if someone start of at say at 350lbs and you started off at 250lbs you may reach your goal weight first, providing you stick to the program. Another reason why we should not compare our weight lost with others.

    feeling cold..

It’s pretty cold here in Aus atm as we are in winter. I struggle to get warm and am not helped by the fact that our house is large and openplan it’s a nightmare to heat. My hubby always complains about my cold hands and feet, even in summer. However the last 2 days I have noticed that the pads below my thumbs have been looking decidedly blue! I am somewhat concerned and will mention it to my Dr . I am not struggling to breath and my fingertips are fine. I am hoping that it may just be because there is no longer any fat there so it is easier to see the veins through my ageing skin!
  8. Im glad you've enjoyed the thread. I still try to check in from time to time. You almost cant compare sleeve to DS; they work in completely different ways. Yes, you eat less with sleeve....for awhile... but then things stretch and you end up pretty much back to where you started. DS works at your intestines; not stomach. It doesn't limit what you eat, but what you eat doesn't fully digest -especially fat- which means it doesn't end up on your belly and thighs. The downside is that the food that doesn't digest has got to go somewhere, and that somewhere is the toilet, which you will be visiting 2x to 5x your current norm, at all hours of the day and night. Takes some getting used to. Regardless, the best decision I ever made. Bottom line: Sleeve can work for some people; but only those with discipline. DS just works, regardless. I cheat all the time. All. the. time. Haven't re-gained any of the weight. Mini update: I still haven't broken the 200lb mark, which is frustrating. At same time, I go to the gym 5 days a week and mountain bike about the same. My waist line continues to shrink, and all my friends refer to me as "jacked" or "ripped." Little bit of a pooch still just at my belt line, but some of it is loose skin. Other than the two particularly nasty scars the surgeon left behind on my belly, It feels pretty good to take my shirt off at the beach or pool. Good stuff.
  9. Okay so I’m late to the party, but here is my $0.02. 10 years ago I lost ALL of my hair when I was on chemo for TNBC. The single biggest risk factor for any kind of cancer is obesity. Eventually chemo ended, the hair came back (it was really weird hair for the first year— it was frizzy and a bit orange) and by 12-18 months post-Chemo, nobody would’ve known I was bald as an egg previously. I’m 4.5 months post sleeve, and I’ve noticed some thinning— especially around my temples and on the top of my scalp and it’s slightly annoying because I’d rather not cut my hair until I hit goal and don’t feel like emphasizing my face until then. If it thins much more I might have to cut it. Another side effect from having breast cancer is 2 reconstructive surgeries and scarring, etc. the side that got the radiation is much firmer than the unaffected breast and at the end of the day there’s only so much plastic surgeons can do. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve also got stretch marks in various places across my thighs, abdomen, and upper arms from rapid weight gain and pregnancy. My skin prior to surgery totally was a wreck to start with. I wanted to go into this detail because I’ve already experienced all of these things you’re worried about, and I was morbidly obese! How I look at it now is I can have all these issues and be fat, unhealthy, unhappy, and at continued high risk for cancer recurrence, or I can be fit, fabulous, and happy and decide later if I want/need plastics for excess skin. Honestly the plastic that I want most of all will be Lipo on my thighs. Even when I was in my 20’s and weighed at or under 135, I HATED my thunder thighs and I had massive cellulite even when I was a size 4/6. *sigh Edited to add... I’ve lost 61 pounds and have gone from a size 22 to a size 14 since February 6th.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I'm getting the exact same thing. People are actually telling me I'm too skinny and that I should try to gain a bit, but I know that I should lose 15 more pounds. That would be my goal weight of 150, and I know exactly what that looks and feels like because that's what I weighed from about age 20 to age 32. (Age 32 is when all hell broke loose.) I have been told that it's not uncommon to "rebound" a bit when you reach your goal weight and stop losing--meaning that you can gain 10-15 pounds before you body stabilizes at the new weight. For that reason, I'm actually okay if I get 10 pounds or so below my goal. I'm sure that I could gain 10 pounds without a problem if necessary!

Weight lost stall after 9 months

I definitely agree that we all loose at different rate. When long term 60lbs is a great weight loss so far and I agree if you are not tracking you should. My program is between 800cal-1000cal, but I never go over 800 cal .Protein is 60g-100g still trying to hit 60g. My dietitian told me aim for 60g Talk to your dietitian and to go over your daily intake to see if there is any changes you can make. Exercise is also very important. I also encourage you to attend a support group. Don't be discouraged you can do this!!
  12. My Dr. put me on Actigall a week after surgery because I still have my gallbladder. I forgot to ask them how long I would have to be on it. Is there a certain time period you're on it after surgery or is it determined by how much weight you still have to loose?
  13. Eggs cheese and avocado, cottage cheese yogurt sugar free pudding kfc mashed potatoes refried beans and cheese my new thing is baked potatoes just don’t eat the skin and I put light sour cream and cheese on it sooooo good!

    100 pounds down!!!!

Awesome! I had similar results (VSG 8/2010)....started at 325 and was down 125lbs 7 months later and then got pregnant so I had to adjust some but evidently I was still loosing because I weighed in at my lowest 1 week after giving birth at 180 and wanted to go further but being a new mom put the focus elsewhere or else I likely would have made it to my dream goal of 160.
  15. Don’t get me wrong if we are we will be super grateful but this i just feel this is to soon. WAAY to soon for my comfort anyway. We planned on trying after a year.. I know they said me being 23 will make me more fertile than most. So we used condoms, pulled out, and spermicide lube. I can’t use birth control it fucks with my body to much. Has anyone gotten pregnant this soon? How was everything? Were you and the baby okay? Was the baby healthy? I’ve lost so much weight but I’m just barely half way to my goal I have 73 more lbs to go to get to my goal. I’m currently 233lbs and was 330lbs at my biggest so I’ve lost 97lbs(46lbs before surgery) I mean I’m still loosing weight I’ve lost two lbs since yesterday. But I don’t know I’m worried it’s to soon. Because they do specifically say wait 12-18 months.
  16. Good to know. Good luck on your surgery next week! :) I actually got some exercises from my in-person support group that have been known to help with reducing loose skin. The facilitator said that the exercises, coupled with meeting protein goals will help in reducing excess skin. She even said it's OK to add collagen peptide supplements to your diet which have also been known to help. I know Target carries some that you can just mix in with your regular protein powder or even mix with water and drink it plain. I'm not sure how expensive they are, I never checked. But I have seen them. I'm thinking of trying them.

    Slow weight loss

Hi I am almost 7 weeks out too and have only lost 15 lbs since surgery. It's been hard. My drs only want me on protein, no veggies or fruits. I asked again at my appt yesterday and they said not until 5 months out. I don't have a hard time eating though and that scares me. They told me I was loosing slow and to up my cardio even more. I know how you feel and wanted you to know I am slowly losing too.

    Weight-loss funnies

Am behind on laundry this week, so it was slim pickings in the closet this morning and I had to settle on a pair of pants I haven't worn in about a month...granted, they were a little loose back then, but still wearable-ish, and when I put them on this morning, yeah, they were still loose, but it seemed OK to wear (they are a old-school size 8's, i.e., pre-vanity sizing). They. Just. Fell. Down. Luckily, no one was around to witness my humiliation, especially since the underwear I'm currently wearing is also about 3 sizes too big for me (like i said, I'm behind on laundry!). I need to buy new clothes.

    Food Intake

I just had my second follow-up visit after surgery and was told by dr. that I need to be eating more calories. I am currently eating between 500-700 calories a day and am literally full. I also have not figured out what is going to agree with my system yet and what is going to make me sick, so I have been sticking to safe options. But I was told that I need to be eating between 1000-1200 calories a day to loose otherwise my body will hold on to the weight. How long after surgery were you all eating that much in addition to drinking 64oz of water/liquids daily?

14 months out - Just a quick update.

So I just scheduled my first consultation for an arm lift, woo hoo! I have no idea what they cost and I am not traveling out of the country for it, so I will probably have to save for a good while, but at least I will know whether I am a good candidate and the price. My arms are the only part of me that needs some "professional" help, in my opinion. I have a bit of an issue with my upper thighs, but it is something that only I notice and not noticeable to others, even in shorts. I would love a bigger chest, but I am not willing to pay for it, haha. Luckily, my chest has only gotten smaller, but I don't have any issues with extra skin in that area. Considering I am between an A and B cup (yes, you read that right, a 39-year old that could wear a training bra, LoL) I don't think I have to worry about extra skin even if I lose another 10 pounds.
  21. I’m still pre-op (surgery next week!) And besides protein and stage appropriate exercise, my surgeon also recommended wearing compression garments during the weight loss phase to help reduce the loose skin (not just hide it after the fact). I should be able to start a week or so after surgery. Fingers crossed
  22. 9 Months out here. Have been the SAME weight since.... March. This stinks. I work out, some days I probably only drink 2-3 bottles of water (Maybe an issue) I eat a lot of protein. Which, in the end kinda depresses me because I think, AM I DONE LOOSING WEIGHT?
  23. My brother came over tonight and said “it’s not too late to back out”, and like a switch flipped I started to get scared again. I was so excited about my surgery approval. But now I am second guessing myself all over again. I know a lower weight would make getting around easier and less painful, flying on airplanes will be easier, my knees and feet won’t hurt as much, I will feel more comfortable in my own skin. But the fears I have are real too... a lot of what ifs. What if I get vitamin deficiencies or horrible complications. What if I get another disease later in life and they can’t treat it bc I have malabsorption and an altered anatomy. Etc etc etc. Was anyone else as scared before surgery as I am?? 😂😂

    Rate of weight loss

We are our biggest critics. You will do fine especially that you are exercising. Currently I spin, work out on the elliptical and treadmill and was jut cleared weights. You will be successful continue to do what you are suppose to do. Don't pay no attention to those that loose an enormous amount of weight in one month. Your success is your very own and you are doing amazing so far.

    Anyone else not losing?

The doctor explained that I would lose weight like the "stairs", instead of the "slide". It's not going to be smooth sailing all the way down. Our body will lose the weight but we must give it chance to regroup and refit our skins. My surgery was in Feb 2019. My slowest progress so far was on my 3rd month (May). Once June came around, my progress increased again. Good job exercising everyday. Congratulations on losing 55 lbs. I recently lifted a 10 pound potato sack and it was "HEAVY"... So 55 is a lot! Awesome job! Hang in there friend. We'll be skinny someday....soooon!
