    Excess skin

I've had two skin removal surgeries (lower half & upper half). Yep - big surgeries (six hours each) and much tougher recovery than weight loss surgery. I'm glad I had them, but they're no walk in the park. Just so you know, no one can tell by looking at me that I had them, because it was pretty easy to hide my excess skin - I just had to watch what I wore (slightly long-ish, slightly oversized shirts - and elbow-length or longer sleeves). Now, I can wear anything. Of course, *I* know I look totally different underneath my clothes now - more like a normal person. No more stuffing my stomach skin into my jeans or tummy-control leggings and no having to pick up my excess stomach skin when I shower so I can clean underneath it. And no more skin slapping up against me while doing certain exercises. But when clothed, it's not obvious. Again, my excess skin wasn't hard to hide as long as I wore the "right" clothes - but still, I'm glad it's gone.

    Excess skin

I think most of us has it to some degree or another. I lost 100 lbs and have a bit around my middle, both above and below the belly button. Saggy under my tiny butt cheeks. Slightly saggy underarms (less so now I have real muscles growing there!) I have decided to live with it. But I am older. For younger folk, or if it really bothers you, there are many skin removal surgery options. I think there is one of the forums here just for the discussion of those options...

    February 2019 weight loss buds

No Barium swallow 'till tomorrow, so I'm on ward leave at home, trying to get as much fluid in as possible. Going back tonight. Hubster is suuper-stressed right now. Not really about me, more about his own stuff -- but it all adds up. My goal for the day is to hold down the fort, hang out some washing, and try to do the things that will take the most pressure/stress off the both of us. I hate being in the no man's land of not knowing how things will go, but that's reality at the moment, and I'm having to remind myself that it's important just to focus on keeping my stress and anxiety levels in check. I'm still loosing! Even after pumping me full of 2L of fluids. I've got less than half a pound to go to break 200. Anyone got any great ideas about how to celebrate once this hospital hiccup is all over?? I'm thinking of going to see the baby otters at the zoo or trying out a roller coaster I can fit on now! 🙂 Got to keep the positive ideas and energy flowing! We've all come so, so far ❤️
  6. Ok here’s my progress. (Had to switch to my phone - no scandalous pics on my work computer) 😀 I started this journey at a size 20, now down to a tight 12. Body fat then was 48%, I’m now down to 36%. I am 5lbs away from the Overweight BMI category and no longer being obese!! Photo 1: I can see my progress better from a side view. (My boobs will not die!!) Photo 2: Face to face comparison. (My skin didn’t change colors, lighting was just better) Photo 3: My arms are skinny!!!
  7. I do the same thing. It's sad but I'm just too self conscious. I can't wait to be comfortable in my own skin again and enjoy life to the fullest.
  8. we can have baked potato with skin. I was VERY shocked!

    Had my gastric sleeve today

Feeling shitty is 1/2 your body's reaction to the insults done to it in the name of positive health science, 1/4 recovering from anesthesia and 1/4 emotional let- down after summoning enough courage to go through and have your Surgery. Most of us run at a fever- pitch tying up loose ends, making. sure nothing blocks you when you have travelled so far in so many ways to Get Here . Promise, Day by Day you are going to feel better, expect a let-down about 3 days in, 72 hours at. High Emotional Energy is about all one body can stand. For me or was also the day I went home, I ached , was weepy, oh I was glad for my surgery, really I was, but on the surface " Sweet Mother of God, WHAT DID I LET ME IN FOR?" But very soon the Sun will shine, the Bluebirds will sing and the flowers bloom, and your world🌎will be a wonderful new place to live and your future will shine forth! And you will be like me, telling the " Newbees" "You can do it, You really can do it, I've been there and I know! "And to. all them, you will be the Veteran , the Mentor to guide them on their way too! So smile😝, sip, sip, sip, do your "Walkies" be happy you've been this chance, remember not all of us get approved the very time They try and I think you'll do Just Fine!

    Just sleeved 6-17-19!!

I think this picture will help visualize what he does. After he places the staples he uses a row of nylon sutures. He said the the staples eventually get loose and fall out will the nylon sutures will permanently stay intact to help reinforce the area. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Just sleeved 6-17-19!!

That's not bad statistics at all, very encouraging. When I started the pre OP diet I was 235 lbs, if I loose all the weight and only gain 5 to 10 lbs of the weight by 5 year or more I will be still so happy. To me that is still success. I am 5'9, my ideal weight to be is between 140-150 lbs. I hope I can make it to 140 lbs so I always have some room and dint freak out if I can a few pounds. I am very happy I met you on here, now we can compare our progress to one another. I wish us both lots of luck. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Itchy

I was intensely itchy after surgery and I believe that it was from less water being taken in. Before surgery, I probably drank a gallon a day. After surgery u struggled to get in the 64oz my doc reccomends. My skin quickly became scaly. I am still dry (6weeks out) but using cocoa butter regularly has helped a lot in addition to being able to drink more water. I also do still have some Incision itchiness.
  14. I had gastric sleeve In 2018. I was 232 I'm now 127. I have excess skin on my stomach I saw a plastic surgeon to see about having it removed. They did a nicotine test, which I thought no big deal because I've never smoked. It came back positive for continine! I'm in shock, I asked the lady how's that possible because I don't smoke nor have I ever but I'm around a lot of secondhand smoke and I roll my husband tobacco so I'm always handling it thinking maybe that's it. She says no and that I need to quit but how am I supposed to quit something I don't do?? Has this happened to anyone? I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do.

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Hey everyone! I am so happy to see everyone's progress!! it's amazing. While I have been successful, I have had to battle through some severe stomach issues. I have been in and out of the hospital last month and this month due to stomach issues that I will know more about after my colonoscopy. This setback has taken an already strict lifestyle and added even more nuance to it. Right now we don't know if it's just severe diverticulitis, Crohn's disease or what. I had very substantial hemorrhaging of the colon, but thankfully they were able to stop it. So, right now is a wait and see and be careful type of thing. I have made further adjustments to my lifestyle to eliminate nuts, vegetables and fruit with seeds, I can't handle creams, dairy, etc. So.... it's interesting right now. As far as the sleeve is concerned, I couldn't be happier! Down 81 pounds. i do have the dreaded loose skin, but *shrugs* I will give myself more time to tighten as best as I can and then from there I may get a little help with what's left, eventually not in the near future. It hasn't even been a year and I am not finished losing yet. I hope everyone is taking time to enjoy the journey. It's a wild one! Oh, 😒 who has had people say, "You really don't need to lose any more weight." 🙄 I have had countless people tell me you are going to start looking like you're sick if you lose another pound. These are people who aren't aware that I had surgery done. I also had someone tell me that my colon issues my be due to all of this healthy eating that I am doing and I may just need to eat regular since I have already lost so much weight. 🙄 smh.
  16. I’m only in the beginning stages of my year long pre- surgery stage. I called my insurance company today (required by surgeons office) to discuss my coverage. A few things I learned is that they only cover one surgery per lifetime so I need to choose wisely which surgery to go with. They also told me that skin removal is not covered, period. Not even apron removal. What has everyone used to help with loose skin and elasticity issues? I know genetics plays a huge role here and I know I’ve been given a crap hand in that department so I’m looking for ideas I can start now to help my skin heal prior to surgery.
  17. Omg you're such an inspiration..All of us know we are overweight I have a problem with the word fat.lol But until like you we actually look at the size we were it's hard to really take it in. You have lost a whole person and your doing great things for your health. Those are absolutely amazing milestones. You look awesome and should be proud of yourself!! I don't know what your goal weight is but I would bet that you are at least at the halfway point. Keep your eyes on the goal and keep your chin up!! I am having the RNY REVISION SURGERY on July 16th. I had sleeve surgery will be 3 years ago October 25th. I lost 87 lbs and have arm skin enough for wings but I have severe GERD and it has gotten worse since the sleeve. I still want to lose at least 85 more lbs. Terrified of the hanging skin. But thankfully there's surgery for skin removal after losing all the weight. With any luck my insurance companies will pay for at least part of it. Anyway I wish you the best of luck with your journey. Allie in SC Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Plateau for last 4+ years

You don't have to starve yourself, deprive yourself or excersize to loose weight. The "clean eating" diet plan doesn't work for everyone and sets some individuals up for thinking they're a failure if they don't. We all don't fit into the same box. Maybe a diet plan like IIFYM that allows you to have treats like a doughnut without feeling guilty would be best for you.

    Legs....

Much of these responses are correct. It is difficult to target specific areas of your body for weight loss. You can however, target areas for muscle toning and i think that might help you. I know i know, people all say they done want to build so much muscle that they become buff and look like a body builder. Dont worry...you wont. You should start thinking about doing a combination of lower body resistance training along with HIIT cardio. If you need some more explanation of what those are, let me know. Just like loose skin, some things are inevitable. If we are "hippy", as my wife likes to say, it may be difficult to loose that lower body weight at the start. All i can say is to get to it and see what kind of results you can get.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Great Job! you are doing well. I am also loosing well. I have lost almost 40 pounds now yeah! Sometimes when I want to eat I get mad at my belly, but when I step on the scale I love it. I have a love hate relationship with my belly LOL . I NEVER would have lost this much weight without the surgery.

How many have had insurance cover PS?

Mine did! Search your ins. site for 'criteria for panniculectomy' (typically, this is the only procedure ins. will cover) If you have a doctor that has been following you for problems due to excess skin. Take the list of criteria to them. Have that dr write the referral & necessity of the procedure. Make sure they touch on as many ins. criteria they can. I went to pain management as I have many physical issues. He wrote a referral, touching on all the points ins. was looking for. Took that to plastic surgeon, who took pics & wrote her own prior approval request. That was sent, as well as letter from pain management. I also wrote my own letter stating the co-morbidities that were resolved with weight loss, how crucial exercise is to maintenance & keeping those co-morbidities gone, and how the pannis was impacting my limited options for exercise. I was SHOCKED, when I got a letter that not only was the panniculectomy approved, but also abdominoplasy!! Keep in mind, insurance companies want to save as much money as possible. Convince them that, in the long run, it is more cost effective to do skin removal than pay for treatment for co-morbidities, infections, etc......

    March Bypass Buddies

You didn't really ask me , but I'm weighing in. Usually found when you have an Endoscopy For me a knowing that doesn't stop, full or empty. I also have pain in my pouch , like a Charlie Horse internally, although my doctors would argue thins I think I detect a puffiness over Precious , my pouch, last time I mentioned it the resident said it was impossible, she's buried farther down, not on the skin surface. All I know is: I feel what I feel! Besides he only helps form them, I LIVE WITH IT. Plus I have thinned down there below my breastbone. Also pain/tenderness in the right subcostal area, subcostal means " under ribs" perhaps you might want the. translation. I get used to calling things by their medical names. You Upchuck more than you want to because you're swollen inside and food doesn't always pass through readily. How do I know all this? Experience , I have been fighting this war since last October, a month/6 weeks past my RNY. The last EGJ showed healing well underway. Okay, got to show off now. As bypassers, we no longer can have EGD because they no longer can access the duodenum, the 1st part of the small intestine, this the sacrifice we pay to have our type surgery. So we are Esophageal- Gastric pouch- jejunem which is 2nd part of small intestine and the part now attached to our pouch. Marginal means she has ulcers just before the opening or just after. Our acid production got cut way down with surgery, but there is just enough to make an insult to our pouch/ jejunem. And although there is usually protective mucus layer in our stomach, poor jejunem didn't get built that way and the minute amounts still "chew" on him. I had as many as 10 in my intestine as well as the ones in my pouch right before the opening. And swollen also means narrowed so I still am on puree, soup, broth and protein shakes. Seems like forever but only 9 months of my life, for the Greater good I will endure through it! And you didn't ask but I have lost 120+ pounds since my surgery, multiple clothing sizes, and I am still losing, one of the few people who never stalled, like an old jalopy I just keep chugging along , slow and steady and pounds going away permanently.
  23. Typically, if they cover anything, it will be reconstruction for medical necessity (that is what you have to establish, so document all related problems). They will cover, if at all, the minimum to restore function, so the most that we typically see would be for a panniculectomy (cutting of that overhanging skirt of loose skin) but not an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) which will usually have some muscle tightening along with more extensive sculpting, or a lower body lift, arm lift, etc. If they cover anything minimal, any additional work is on your ticket. Likewise, hernias - incisional or umbilical - are often a ticket to partical coverage as the hernia can pay for a base charge for the OR , anesthesia, and day or so of hospital recovery, with the additional time and labor for additional work paid by the patient.
  24. I used the ones from Bariatric Pal store until I ran out, then reverted to my caplet Prenatal vitamins. I have a humor-type one for you. Just once I would like to read a medication that says WARNING: May cause permanent weight loss Remove Wrinkles Tighten up loose body areas Increase Energy Levels. And What a Wonderful World that would be!
  25. Depends on your plan and if you have issues usually. My doctor told me to tell them EVERY SINGLE TIME I have an issue extra skin related, rash, tears etc. So right now my current issue has been there is a stretch mark that I have on my hip that likes to split open because of my skin. So I have them log it every single time it opens up and if it gets any infections so there's more likely a chance for insurance to cover the surgery. The doctor said if I make the complaints insurance will see it every time.
