    Post op hip pain

The only way to know is to go get a blood panel and an exam. You are not even 6 months out and should just make an appointment. Do you really want to risk your health because of embarrassment over not taking vitamins? Get some soft chews of calcium and follow the plan. This doesn't sound typical as far as complications are concerned but deficiencies can happen and a full blood panel is the only way to know.

    what to buy for preop

The goal of the prep op diet is to help you prepare for your dietary changes and to shrink your liver to reduce complications during your surgery. If your liver is too big, they may cancel the surgery. My pre op diet was no more than 30 carbs and no sugar.

Has anyone had the mini gastric bypass?

I had an MGB earlier this year and had no complications. And weight loss is going GREAT!!
  4. The most complicated birthday ever. No champagne cheers for me, no cake for me. no food for me. Just my protein shake. Tuesday i'll have my bypass. If I went through all of this today, having a party for me being the only one not eating... Well, I am sure I'll do fine after the surgery. Wish me good luck. Love to everyone

    Hello

So sorry you have been through so much. I was not aware I even had a hiatal hernia till after surgery. Just figured all obese people felt the way I did. The reflux was to the extent that my doctor ordered a preop endoscopy. Found out I have Barrett's Esophagus. Good news is that my RNY bypass on 7/13 repaired the hernia and has now fixed the GERD so it will no longer speed up the progression of the Barrett's. Plus I would not have known about the Barrett's if it were not for my surgeon. There's been some very minor complications here and there, but I have no regrets at all. And the way my health was going due to my obesity? I had compendium risks either way. Hope this helps & keep posting questions!
  6. Here , I had MGB on 03.August and my doctor said has same effect as general bypass but with less complication. So far I'm 1 month post op and I have lost 33lbs
  7. No but they usually do liver enzyme tests which would be out of wack if youre an alcoholic. I would be completely upfront about any issues with alcohol with my surgeon. If you have surgery (especially a bypass) and are frequently drinking alcohol you have pretty a high chance of ruining your life . Perforated mariginal ulcers are no joke and could result in a plethora of complications and future painful surgeries.

Post-op fever, back pain and chills

I agree, call dr. have you been keeping your fluids up? also sounds like a bad urine infection aswell as other possible complications i have no idea about, seems you had a rough time hope u feel better
  9. She listed the complications with the bypass. The sleeve sounds like it will be as successful as I make it to be. Being used as a tool, my life has to be re-arraigned. I feel 100% now with the sleeve.
  10. Hello I had my sleeve done Aug 29th 2017. I havent had any complications but I did have gas bubbles in my collar bone from the co2 that was very painful but finally went away. I'm basically just wanting to know when will I start losing weight. When I started this i was 299 and day of surgery I was 244. My weight when I was discharged was 260 i stayed a day n a half n the hospital and now today I am 254. I'm not hungry at all but everytime I drink it feels like a ton of bricks being dropped in my stomach. I'm always tired and kinda feel weak. Other than never feeling hungry I don't have any other things to help me feel good about this. When do i start seeing changes? I see the weight dropping but the inches aren't going anywhere. ? For post op peeps!

I told my boss 10 days no work, and then I will do paperwork from home (there is tons of it do) and hopefully I can get through that ok and then see where I am at and if I can do more - like travel in the car. I am nervous about this also. I have time to take off but basically my bosses rely on me working to make them money. I asked this question also because I did not know if I was being realistic about it or not. I am just praying for no complications!
  12. Spoke with my surgeon yesterday about sleeve vs. bypass. After 3 minutes into the conversation, I decided on the sleeve. To many complications with bypass.
  13. Hey all. I just got insurance approval for RNY. Yah!! At the time I started this process One month ago I was unemployed and ready to go for surgery. I start my new office job at a school next week and am now unsure how I can make this happen. Now I'm worried about the timing of surgery. I would most likely try to schedule right before a long weekend or Holiday weekend and maybe take a few sick days. I have also been on the fence about RNY and Sleeve immediate and long term complications. Also, I'm concerned about spending too much time in the bathroom at work after all of this. Committing Diarrhea etc. Can someone tell me their experience with returning to work and dealing with other issues during the day. I really don't know now if I should choose one surgery over another for recovery time, etc... Or if I should hold off completely until the end of the school year.

Has anyone had their bypass reversed ? Where there any complications afterwards ? I'm seriously thinking about getting mines reversed. I can't drink protein drinks dairy or plant based they make me very sick I can't stop throwing up and there's literally nothing on my stomach and my doctors office isn't having much luck getting me to a gi specialist I already been to the e.r now I'm so weak n light headed every thing is trembling I'm going back to the e.r I'm so scared I may die from this bypass I really just want it reversed
  15. I'm officially in the August sleeve gang as of yesterday. Had revision of band to sleeve and what was expected to be an hour became 2. BNd either erode into stomach or surgeon aid in trying to retrieve poked small who in esophagus area near stomach which had to be hand sewn. So absolutely no liquids not even ice chips until after swallow test. I'm so thirsty but they're not. Budging. Sleeve was well done. Just have to get over stomach hurdle. Any one else run into smilie snags or complication?

    Structures?

Hi Sarah- My first suggestion is to be kind to yourself and relax. The more intense and upset you get, the harder it will be to swallow anything. I am wondering if your surgeon used a very small bougie when he performed your surgery. Some docs, mine included, go down a size from the standard because they know it will eventually stretch and this gives your surgery a chance at longer restriction. If he did choose this approach then embrace his conservative technique. I can almost promise that you are going to be just fine. Strictures do happen but they are few and far between. If the restriction is causing you lots of anxiety they can usually stretch the opening a few millimeters through endoscopy and you will be happy as a clam. Only the doc can read your imaging and make the decision about the need to do the endoscopy. I studied the long term complication rates of sleeve gastrectomy for my MHA thesis and I can't recall anyone having life altering issues from restriction that was too aggressive. The endoscopy is literally a 15 minute procedure. Usually they put you out but they might use a strong RX so you won't remember it happening. Outpatient procedure and the fix is immediate. Hope that helps you relax a bit. I am not a doctor but I spent months is bariatric journals and patient charts and that would be my best guess. Definitely follow up but you will be fine until Tuesday if the doc is out of town. Not eating for a day or two can be tolerated. If you can't get liquids down, that is a whole different story and you need to get medical attention immediately! Perhaps you should resort to protein shakes and clear liquids to help with the nausea until you can see the doc. Good luck! Teachkdz0507

Ideas on what to tell work

I have not told anyone at my job.. i started eating the way I am now 3 months before surgery, just to get used to it so it didn't really feel like a change after. I only had a week vacation so it was surgery on Monday, home tuesday walk/drink rest of the week. Drive to my follow up on Thursday and went back to work Monday. I was fortunate enough to have NO complications and Did not need any pain meds ( not even tylenol in the hospital. )

    I regret this surgery

Hello Andrew, What kind of complications did you have? Why a second surgery was needed? I had a Gastric Sleeve surgery on August 9th. I was doing great so far, but since yesterday I have abdominal pain. Thanks Sent from my SM-G925I using BariatricPal mobile app

    I regret this surgery

I regretted the surgery too during my first few months post op. I was pissed off at myself for making this decision. Had a few complications and needed a second surgery. Blah blah blah Told my surgeon I regretted having the surgery and he told me he was going to ask me the same question in 3 months. He was right. After the weight start falling off in bulk and surgery healed I began to feel awesome. I'd not felt that good in 30+ years. That charged me up and made me stick to the program better than I thought I could. Now almost 4 years later I remain at my goal weight after losing 150+ pounds. Chin up. Better days are ahead. Andrew

    Just cannot eat

I have been very fortunate to have a completely complication free surgery and recovery. I am 4 weeks post. I was doing well for three weeks progressing through the stages of my diet. I just started on soft. I am not nauseated but I am now completely put off by the thought of food. I am not hungry at all to the point that I am getting weak from not eating. I am keeping up with my water intake. I cannot drink shakes anymore because I had enough of them beginning preop to post op. If I see one more shake I will scream. While I am happy and grateful that I am not hungry, I just wish I could find some protein rich soft food that I can eat enough to have some energy. Does anybody have ideas or is it just a phase that will pass?
  21. Hi Sara. My surgeon told us upfront that the biggest risk is the unknown in each surgical procedure. The fact that they know your past history allows them to be prepared for various potential complications specific to your case. I would try to weigh the cons versus the pros in making your decision and see which list is ultimately the best for you in the long run. I don't personally have a heart problem yet, but I do have a strong family history of losing my father to a series of heart attacks in his 40s, his mother and father both having heart attacks, his brother having had bypass surgery, and losing my brother to a massive heart attack 4 years ago at the age of 56. My doc told me my family history alone put me at high risk, but the extra weight, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure compounded the risk and I was just a ticking time bomb unless I lost the weight. Also add in the factor of my sedentary lifestyle due to inactivity from my severely arthritic knees that need to be replaced, and it only gets grimmer. I tried on my own to lose the weight for over 10 years after my knees got so bad and the weight came on, but I constantly yoyo'd which also is not good on your heart. I finally decided I had to get the sleeve and get headed in the right direction, as my quality of life was pretty nonexistent and was only going to get worse. I too was hesitant but I was fortunate to have my family behind me, even though I know they were scared for me to have the surgery as well. It was the best decision I ever made for myself and I would do it again. If you keep positive thoughts and keep your mind open, I know God will give you the sign you are waiting for. Whichever way you decide, think about the burden that will be taken away from your heart which will allow you to live a longer life to enjoy your children and grandchildren when that day comes. Okay, I think I've said enuf for now. I wish you the best of what life has to offer you going forward and may God bless you with the right decision for you. Be sure to keep us posted.
  22. My surgery is in a month. I started preparing a month ago. I have not cheated once. I had a last splurge the weekend before I started preparing for surgery. I honestly made myself miserable because of eating so much crap. The thought that kept going through my mind - was the food really that important? Did it really fix anything for me? The answer is no. I'm sick of food having a hold of me. I'm done. My other issue is the fear of complications from surgery. I want to have the best chance I can of a zero issue surgery. So given your situation where you wanted "Chinese", I would have had like teriyaki chicken with steamed vegetables. Or Mexican, have chicken fajita with the peppers and onions and salsa and skip the beans and rice. That's my new attitude. I'm still getting food I enjoy minus a couple items. And the high protein has stopped my cravings. Hang in there. Ask why you are doing this and is it really worth it.
  23. Hi. You've done a great job! I had my sleeve surgery last July. Then in September due to complications, I had an emergency revision to rny. I'm doing well (have lost 123 lbs-20 away from my goal) but I have trouble remembering not only to take my vitamins but also to eat & drink! My dr actually told me that my one job is to eat!! I'm hoping that maybe we can help each other. Feel free to pm me (just not on facebook as most people don't know I had surgery). Looking forward to helping each other!

How much time in the hospital?

Admitted @ 730am for 10 am surgery on Thurs, Discharged by 2pm Fri. RNYGB, no complications or vomiting, able to keep fluids down and void (urine/gas). I also walked a good bit post-op evening, as well as the next morning. HW 280 CW 267 SW 274 (8/24/17) GW 150
  25. I also had the DS on 6/9/17 and was revised from the band. The doctor did it in a few hours. I had three times the amount of pain when I had my band surgery because the port would pull when I bent over until it was healed and the doctor didn't give me any painkillers post-op. He handed my husband a few pills and sent me on my way. With the band, it was impossible to bend over for weeks. Let's put it this way, no one left the house until Mom's shoes were tied. I couldn't do it on my own. With the DS, I was able to bend over and pick things off the floor the first day home from the hospital and I only spent one night in the hospital. I was tired after the DS for the first two weeks, but by the third week, my life got back to normal. The pain was very minimal, at least for me. Now if you want to talk painful surgeries, a total knee replacement takes the prize in my book. I haven't had any experience with just the gastric sleeve part, only the full DS. Since the sleeve is part of the DS, I'm not sure why you've been told the DS would be an easier recovery. The DS is more complicated than the sleeve. Anyway, the recovery wasn't bad at all.
