"...but you're 7 pounds short of qualifying"
tfarr replied to Engteacher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess it depends on the center and the operating surgeon. I went for my last appointment and I was sweating qualifying ( I also am 5'5 and my first weight was 239). My bmi was 39.4 and my ins requires 40 with no comorbidiries. I also gained 4 lbs ( I stopped nursing my daughter 4 months ago which made me gain) My Surgeon told me he's using the weight he got that day of my appointment and that's the only one he's giving them. So needless to say, some ins require all monthly weights to see if there is a gain or just the one. Apparently Anthem BC/BS of New England is pretty good about these things. Thank god!!! Keep going to your appointments and see what they say. -
I am truly at the pre-dawn stage...
slimdown456 replied to msjoy83's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
HI, I just went to my pre-op appointment yesterday. My surgery is scheduled for March 13th. I start the pre-op diet in 6 days. I am very excited to go forward with this procedure after years of problems keeping my weight off , and years of orthopedic problems. The first appointment is a little overwhelming, due to the amount of information given. I am now able to read the information and it makes more sense. My doctor is Dr. Teresa Lamasters , DesMoines , Iowa. My insurance is BC/BS. -
One week out whats "normal?"
supercomik replied to supercomik's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you so much. As soon as I complained...it subsided. Onto puréed. And my lord, the first bite was like going to a five star restaurant! May I recommend trader joes fat free black beans w low fat cheese? A 2 oz serving took me 20 min to eat but was 7 gms protein and DELICIOUS. it feels like regular food bc it's ALWAYS served "puréed in the restaurants! Yum! -
My recovery has been fairly smooth and uneventful (considering the last time I lost weight the nation was watching) but just wondering: I have 1 oz every 20 min (while awake when I can) and no matter how slowly I ingest, I always seem to feel pain (very much like when you have a large gulp of extra fizzy seltzer and you have that gas pain in your belly til you burp) it subsides eventually but is this normal? Will it subside eventually? Just asking bc I'm supposed to transition to purée next week (very small amts) and imagine it will be even more painful. But I NEED to. There is only so much vitamin water whey protein and miso broth a soon to be former fattie can stand!

I have BC/BS direct Access. I thought this was one of the best plans that they offer but I guess they are really cracking down. The PA told me yesterday that this all started on the 1st of the year (just my luck 3 weeks later)!

Dumping syndrome or something else?
mwrarr replied to T.Whitaker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You won't get true dumping syndrome with the sleeve. But if you changed your supplements or shakes recently, check the nutritional info labels, bc they may have some hidden sugar or something else. It also could be trying to eat too much volume at once. -
Im new, sleeved 4/22/15 n stalling! Help

Need Help, Banding in a week...but think Im accidently pregnant
burnsun replied to a topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I saved up all the money, had a date for Mexico in 2002. And found out I was pregnant (13 years of trying and two adoptions later) I had given up bc for 10+ years and was told I'ld win the powerball before I got pregnant. I had to cancel it (not for any of your reasons) I had no maternity insurance- so I needed the $ for the baby. I then had the little one in July 4th 2003. (I did go from 330 lbs to 296 lbs while pregnant then to 278 lbs after birth and hung out there for year) Started saving again and finally got my band in July of 2004. I am now at 208 !!!!!! See that 208 and I have a beautiful new daughter to share it with. It wasn't the way I planned, (surgery, then pregnancy 2 years later) but it will be three years this july and I am still in the same place as I would have been if I followed my plan. But the other plan was what really was meant to be!!!! I attached the before surgery b-day party for adiran (I am the fat one) & two photos of why it can be a good thing (I am about 217 ish here) and why this could be a good thing. I might not cancel your dr. surgery yet. Get it confirmed and see a heartbeat first (before the cancel it - maybe they can move it or postpone it till you are sure the pregnancy will carry to term (I don't mean to be a downer, but they don't all make it, and caucasian obese women have worse statisitics for pregnancy and obesity that other races do.) But congratulations!!! On pregnancy and banding!!! -
I had my first appt with my surgeon on 1/12/15. I completed all my testing and my surgeon's office sent all the information to my insurance (BC/BS) on 2/10. I just received my letter in the mail today that they also approved my surgery on 2/10. Who would've thought that they approved it in less than a day when the surgeon's office told me it could be 2 to 8 weeks. Now I wonder what happens next. Do you automatically get a date from the surgeon and then it is surgery or do you have to go through pre-op classes? I do know from seeing the nutritionist that I have a 1 week pre op diet consisting of liquids and lean meats and vegetables. I would like to hear others experiences from approval to surgery and any tips you have on shopping for pre-op and post op diets. Thanks

Sherri, I have Anthem BC/BS and there is a WLS exclusion rider on the policy. Did you have the same issue?
-
Not in her particular situation, since her and her boyfriend was living together and it was condoned by her mother. Also, this child seemed to have done thid on purpose. You are the exception to the rule, but not all teenage pregnancies result in teen taking the necessary precautions before intercourse. Also, if condoms break that much, and the BC pills are faulty also..then what's the point..right!

Apologies, but what is BC?

what the hell am I up for...

Hey, I am tired but I can't sleep...doesn't make sense! I was born in the wrong time zone I think. Anyway...work is crushing me, but it's ok. I just hate the stupid bs politics that I (we all) have to deal with day in and day out...I start fantasizing about saying shove it up your arse ya jackasses and just walking out....but then I've had that fantasy forever. Oh well, the other thing buggin me is my daughter. She is so stubborn and such a smartass that she will see me in my grave before she makes a move to reunite with me and the rest of the family...she's just amazing....I hope this is just a phase of extreme narcissim...is there such a thing? I can only gues that its because I am a marshmallow and I feel sorry for everyone and everything...that she has become exactly the opposite...closely related to sociopathy actually....kinda scarry too but not like she would kill anyone...just like she would rip their heart out and run over it...ummm....yes I do sound nutso...this is what kids do to unsuspecting parents sometimes! Ok enough of her...The work shop is the day after tommorow...and tommorow is my 42nd birthday...I find that hard to believe...I think I lost like ten or fifteen years somewhere...oh yeah they are buried in fat...maybe I will see them dripping off me soon...hope so! Ok I am rambling cuz I don't have much to say so nighty night!:faint: -
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Help Me Choose! :)
sassypants replied to jazzyjess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Its always your decision of course at the end so I wont tell you what to do but I can tell you why I had the sleeve. I personally know a few people who had bypass and the malabsorption thing for 4 of them is bad, at the time of me deciding what I wanted (even though the by pass was being pushed on me by one saying just have it so I don’t come back in 2 years wanting it because I gained weight) I really didn’t want it so I spoke to my surgeon he has been doing these ops for 10 years he took my gall bladder out and hes to the point no BS. He agreed with me and with my ibs he wasn’t comfortable doing it anyway. As that’s a intestinal problem moving them around was a unknown outcome as to it helping making it worse etc I already had absorption problems anyway to then have that op could make it utterly impossible for me to absorb anything and that’s a major problem. To me just losing 80% of my stomach was enough to Frankenstein my insides honestly scared me and i did not want that at all. I was already on every Vitamin going at crazy levels to just try and absorb them making that worse ugh (actually now I take way way less its great!) I asked my doc about the bypass being pushed on my he said there isn’t as much info on the sleeve as it was originally part of the 2 stage then seeing how well it was doing it became its own stand alone choice. In comparison its just not got as much history so is a baby compared to the data on bypass. The sweets thing having a op just to be able to eat them and have a reaction to make you stop isnt wise its kinda like adverstion treatment to make you stop instead of learning to on your own. A friend of mine got such bad dumping she would pass out from it first few times her kids called a ambulance because they thought it was a heart attack. Some people its mild discomfort others its out and out full on sweating can’t breathe pain and passing out its no walk in the park at all. -
Seriously-- How much do YOU eat at one time?

4-Year Vet, Starting From Scratch! :)
starting nova posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone, just wanted to drop in before I go to sleep and get the ball rolling. My surgery (Realize Band) was performed by Dr. Jeffery Hannon in Mobile, AL, January 2009. My story might be depressing to some of you just starting out, but the good news is that I'm here right now, taking the proverbial "bull by the horns", right!? Four months post-op, I was doing great! I had lost almost 60lbs and was going to be fitted for wedding gowns, and then life just laughed and said "oh, how cute!"-- I found out I was pregnant and Dr. H immediately had me come in to have a complete unfill. My son was born in February of 2010 and I had put on 35 of the 60lbs that I'd lost. This is really a long story but what ended up happening is that I had an adjustment near the end of 2010 (back to my previous "sweet spot"), and was not able to swallow anything-- not even liquids. I live too far to be able to rush back in for an unfill, so I dealt with the pain, vomiting, and discomfort for about 2 weeks. By the time I was able to get back in to see doc, I was swollen and had to have yet another complete unfill. A month or so later, I lost my job, and me being a self-pay patient, was unable to afford the out-of-pocket expense for any fills. I am still without cc's and without any restriction whatsoever. I'm back up to 245 and I'm fed up. On the bright side (there always IS one, you know), I now have a decent position making a decent income, and can now afford my fills. Yippee! And I am ABSOLUTELY going in Wednesday for a fill, no funny stuff this time. I'm not leaving that room until I know I am at a comfortable starting level. I MUST do this, and I feel it in my bones (how ironic) that now is the time. I'm more ready now than I was when I first got the happy mask on the operating table. Please, PLEASE, tell me someone else has filled these shoes before and has had to start over? Lie, even? -

Blue Shield of CA requirement It's been a long six months
wendy830 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
For those of you who want to get approved through BS of CA follow these steps. 1. Start with a center of excellence (I use North State Surgical Associates- Dr. Erik Simchuck) they are familiar with their strict requirements and your likely to get approval the first go around. I started with a seminar in March. Initially I was considering the lap-band but settled on the sleeve. I then started on my six months of nutrition classes - you need to attend one a month for six consecutive months. Dr. Simchuck ordered a sleep study as well as a pulmonary function test - each of which I staunchly believed were unnecessary (I have sleep apnea and poor pulmonary function). they require a psych. evaluation, a written journal of diet attempts, and exercise attempts. My paperwork was sent to BS the day of my last nutrition appt. 9/6/13 and I was approved on 9/12/13. -
OMG! I am cleared for surgery!
crosswind replied to meggiep's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
. I was wondering what the next chapter in the Adventures of Meggie would hold. Only three days away from the primo drugs. I'm excited for you and a little jealous because I miss all the valium you get fed. It's like somebody turned on the benzo spigot and now, alas, the well is dry. Sure was fun while it lasted though. Good to know you're still on the fast bus, congrats -
When you can take pills again?
Beck90 replied to specialkiddomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Right away - the day after surgery I was cleared to take all my meds including capsules and large pills.. but since I have meds for mental health (which is a cocktail of three) plus my BC plus the pain meds I felt like I had had a full meal once I got all of them down but I was determined not to need liquids lol -

I always wondered as I was going through the approval process what my out of pocket expense(s) would be. I have bc/bs of Alabama PPO (PEEHIP). Here is my breakdown: Seminar: Free 6 mos Dr. visits: $180 ($20 copay x 6) sleep Study Dr. Visit $20 Copay Required Support Group Free Nutrition Class $60 copay Out patient Surgery (Hospital Services) $75 Copay (100% covered) Out patient Surgery (Surgeon's Services) 100% covered Fills 100% covered no limit) Fills Dr. Visit no copay first 90 days $20 copay thereafter Total out-of pocket (excluding $20 copay for future fills)= $335 The cost of being healthy? PRICELESS I hope that this estimate helps anyone with similar questions. I am really thankful to GOD that I have good insurance. Since my husband and I both are public school educators we combine our allocations and the state pays our premium. Translation: We pay $0 monthly premium for family health insurance!

I posted a whole field of pixels here a minute ago and it all got eaten by the internet. Highlights? Recovering from surgery is like getting bitten by a vampire. You can't exactly explain what happened but it wasn't good. But I'm starting to feel more like myself and less like the zombie version. Also, I caved and started eating the leftover Medifast I was using before I got fed up with an entirely powdered diet and decided to spend ten thousand dollars on the Hail Mary. I really did not want to touch it again but it makes life a little easier, has 15 grams of Protein per serving and is designed for bariatric patients, which I now happen to be. It's something new sleevers might consider since they make a couple of flavors of protein clears along with shakes, pudding, oatmeal and Soups that are all protein supplemented. If you really don't want to have to think that hard about what you're eating while you're recovering from surgery -- it might be worth it. But it is expensive and it gets old *vvery* fast. There is also WonderSlim and bari...something -- basically all the same product but these two are cheaper. I walked in the park today, cleaned and did laundry and did not cry once. I am still babying my left side. I am starting to feel like a barn that leans. That is all.

I finally waited on hold long enough to speak to a supervisor and they agreed that the documents that their agents were using were outdated and the requirements had changed. BS of CA no longer require 6 months supervised diet -- only the recommended 3 month wait.
-
Do you have BS CA P P O or H M O? I have P P O but I am nervous that the 3 month requirement is only for the H M O, but hopefully not!
